The Biggest Insult On Here
Someone asked "who cares"? Me, lots as it goes. Yet to hear even one remotely coherent argument that legitimises playing bootlegs to paying punters. I'm tired of getting soaked p*ssing into this here head wind though. If you just don't get it you never, ever will Better things to be doing ... like saving up for that next shite, boring 'rare' record.

The Biggest Insult On Here
Bloody hell Bob, I'm confusing myself and you're not helping Last one from me too ... it undoubtedly seems irrational but The examples you've 'quoted' were responses to Rod's post in which made reference to a lack of grace and his use of grade as a means of differentiation - which I can't get my head around at all from a dj-ing point of view (as opposed to collecting). As I said, playing originals is playing originals ... ... playing boots isn't, erm, playing originals. - Love it all and have some passion for the right things i.e. the music and not your ego - Collect what you like, play what you like in your bedroom etc (I certainly do) - Don't ever play bootlegs to paying punters because it's taking the piss out of those who spent years looking for and boat loads of cash they couldn't really afford on originals (and it's 'ungracious') IMHO; - Whether you as a dancer or collector are bothered about whether I'm playing originals doesn't really matter to me in the final analysis, I'd much prefer it if it did though and try to frequent venues where people do care - If you play a boot of an original I've struggled to get hold of then I'm gonna see my arse; - If I pay to listen to you play and you're playing boots I think that's taking the piss; In both instances, IMHO of course, you have no respect for the things - call it exclusivity, snobbery, elitism or whatever you like but they have always been key ingredients - that have gone some way towards making this 'scene' different, as opposed to for everyone, run-of- the mill, lowest common denominator, and special in my opinion and experience e.g. how else are you gonna hear what Butch plays? You gotta want it, make the effort and get off your arse, just like you always have and quite right too. How would he react if someone went on before him and played a cut of one of his exclusives? Shrug and say 'never mind', I'll play something else instead'? I think not ... and if the rules are there for the top guys then surely everyone else should try and play by em otherwise we're all hypocrites aren't we? As I said in an earlier post, if you haven't hitched all over the bloody country to listen to certain djs play certain records as a pimply youth, simply because that was the only way you could hear them (or the real mccoy at least), then that would be hard to get your head around and seem pretty illogical I suspect. For me, playing bootlegs just goes totally against the grain. Suddenly everyone's a bloody dj running venues that are half empty cos it's more important that they dj than anything else; lots of punters don't seem to give a sh*t as long as they can hear the 'tune' and I'm afraid I just don't get that. Buy a CD and listen to it at home, swap tapes with someone but go out with higher expectations of the people who are charging you to get in and those who think they have earned the right to stand up and play them. A very well respected mate of mine said to me a few years ago that the day you could hear the Fascinators in Tesco it was all over and f*ck me he was so right. Trust me, I often wish it didn't mean so much to me all this nonsense Bob. atb Phil

The Biggest Insult On Here
I'm afraid you'll need to explain the ungracious bit to me, alongside the perception about being obsessed with what other people are doing. Which bit don't you get? For example, in what way is someone showing even a modicum of good grace by playing a boot of something you've spent years tracking down and/or fortunes on? Secondly, how on earth does the condition of originals differentiate them in terms of validity insofar as dj-ing is concerned? If they are original and they play well enough for folk to listen and dance to them without difficulty then what's to differentiate? Better to play a nice mint boot for a fiver and f*ck em eh? It would appear that you too are obsessive about collecting, as opposed to what people dj with to paying punters. Personally, I'll take whatever I can get / afford condition-wise, purely because I have to. However, originality is absolutely non-negotiable. Entirely different things IMHO. Oh aye, nearly forgot ... ... is that me you're referring to as infantile? I'll get me dad on yer

The Biggest Insult On Here
I would Pete, and all my other toys too Only after telling the promoter that he'd booked someone who is two bob so that's what, if anything, he should pay them. I'd also tell him he was a clueless f*cking knob (nicely though cos I'm a liberal leftie do-gooding social worker as you know). Thanks for the record mate. Superb service as usual. Trust its an original ps. I did once play a cut of something available only on acetate which the guy who owned had cut for me. Someone asked me to play it. Thanks for letting me share with the group, conscience [partially] appeased.

Cee Lo Green V Funky Newies
Like anything and as its always been, some have it and some don't IMHO. What I kind of object to though is a. Being told it's a new, fresh direction when it clearly is not (whatever you wanna call it, funky soul, gospel, it's been done before, lots ...); and b. playing 'new' stuff that just isn't even nearly good enough - IMHO of course - almost for the sake of itself; if it ain't broke don't fix it. As has been said many, many times before, there seem to be plenty of 45s still out there that could be reactivated but which never get an airing, usually because they ain't 'funky' or 'uptempo' enough and yet, to these ears, they knock some of this gear into the proverbial cocked hat. At the risk of sounding defensive ... ... as for taking the piss out of anything that doesn't constitute 'normal soul', I apologise if I gave that impression via my perhaps trite Hughie Green analogy. Nonetheless, I think that misses the point - and this certainly isn't a a personal pop at Dave A btw, don't think we even know each other and anyone who owns Soul Inc will do for me - and yet, in another sense, it makes it beautifully. At the further risk of resurrecting [yet another] done to death topic on here and going off at a [albeit related] tangent, there still seems to be a school of thought which infers that if you don't like this particular 'genre' - for want of a better description - and / or think that there's a place at a nighter for anything other than uptempo sounds per se, then you are in some way staid, unprogressive, missing the point and or don't 'get it.' It's all about perceptions of quality in the end isn't it? Inevitably, what sounds fantastic to one set of lugs will make another bleed, that's always been the case and it's that diversity which keeps it fresh isn't it? I've backed mine for thirty + years and will continue to do so; moreover, I have always and will continue to collect right across the black music spectrum, including more 'traditional' northern sounding records. In a nutshell then, I always have and always will be open to new sounds and, inevitably, some I'll rate and others I won't. The one posted on here is, for me, just very, very ordinary and I can't personally see the merit in playing it out. (Again, just my opinion which, in the greater scheme, naturally, ain't worth jack s*it to anyone else and neither should it be). Absolutely fair play to anyone who tries to keep things going forward, all I really ask as a punter is that folk mix it up a bit.

The Biggest Insult On Here
I know mate, no easy answers. Gave up a long time and two collections ago looking for em to be honest and/or taking it all too seriously. Just gotta be yourself, be true to yourself and get enough out of it to make it all worthwhile I reckon atb

The Biggest Insult On Here
That's precisely the point isn't it Barney ... ... proper djs (which I have never and would never claim to be btw) invest vast amounts of time and money in building their knowledge and collections over years and years, making major sacrifices in order to do so in most cases. That's precisely why they and some punters get p*ssed off with chancers and two-second billy's, why they are credible as djs, why people pay em to play em and why people pay to hear em. As a youth I used to hitch all over the country to hear certain djs play certain records cos that was the only way you could hear em. All too easy now for anyone to have a punt at it IMHO. If anyone can convince me that the scene is better for that in any single respect then atb Phil

The Biggest Insult On Here
Oh to have so many arrows in one's quiver. Perhaps it's just another of those UK scene things and, therefore, difficult to understand? There are people over here who don't get it after all. So,... ... there is an enormous difference between what you collect and what you play out. Still, I'm not gonna argue about it, that would be silly

Do You Have Enough Money To Be A Top Northern Soul Dj?
Asking for spots Starting a nite up [just] so you can dj At the very heart of two of 'the scenes' biggest problems as far as I'm concerned: i) Anybody and everybody with a 50 box (of anything) is suddenly a dj; and ii) Too many half-arsed events in mostly empty venues boring the tits off people and fragmenting an already dwindling band of potential punters, all so that wannabees can play records to each other.

The Biggest Insult On Here
Always makes me a bit suspicious when I see OVO anywhere, primarily because I take it for granted (naivety on my part perhaps) that anyone charging folk to get into a venue and /or playing records - especially if they are taking money for doing so - does it right. Naturally enough, anyone buying / collecting will go with what they can get hold of, afford etc, be that reissues, CDs or whatever. Still got a few myself and started collecting down that route, using bloody dinner money, as many people did I guess. Good on em. Makes me chuckle and ever so slightly p*ssed though when folk come and have a nosey to see if you're playing 'proper' records; now that is an insult! WTF would you not be? Personally, I wouldn't have the brass neck and anyone that does so knowingly is an absolute cad and a bounder and totally misses the point. All IMHO of course. Coat got ...

Worst Packing Ever? Taking The P***
That'd be going back mate I think. Never ceased to be amazed ... how difficult can it be? On the one hand had a 45 in a 7" metal tin; he'd trimmed a paper sleeve and card up to fit and also filled it with those little foam things. Where on earth he found it I dunno but I've kept the blighter. You could have jumped up and down on it and it'd have survived. Alternatively, received two of the most expensive things I've ever bought in a bloody pizza box. Nearly shat when I saw it and spent about half an hour with my ear alongside 'shaking' it ever so gently

Kindred Soul @ Bidds June 2011
Top man See you Crewe for sure mate. (Think I'm due to clear the floor there in July from memory ).
