  1. Lee Williams, what a record for the money hope you're well T, some great affordable stuff there mate
  2. Hiya hear what you say and agree to some extent but I can remember a significant period of time - when many were off fishing, caravaning etc etc - within which those 'fringe nights' helped to kept the whole thing alive. Always had the big-ticket nighters of course, but nowhere near as many of em. Main difference was though that the folk who attended and / or played 'on the fringe' knew what they were doing and did it for all the right reasons. So many places these days seem to describe themself as 'up-front' or 'rare and underplayed' and what you tend to find when you get there it's nothing of the sort. Personally, I wouldn't make such a big fuss of the progressive, oldies, newies, funky northern tags / policies; they seem doomed to fail and alienate on a number of levels. The recipe seems to me not to be a particle physics equation: - don't clash with established or major events - promote it properly but don't run one every week or month (cos you'll burn it out quickly as the records and punters just ain't there to sustain the turnover and/ or to keep it sufficiently fresh) - believe in what you're trying to do / don't be swayed by idiots who know f*ck all (e.g. be prepared to give them their money back if they continue to be a pain in the arse, thank them for attending and ask them to go somewhere else in future) - only use djs who have a. the records, b. the knowledge and c. the passion to get em up and keep em up dancing; and - play something for everyone within the bounds of reason and without compromising the quality Wouldn't wanna do it on a nighter scale though and fair play to anyone who does and does it well
  3. Please PM with price and condition cheers Phil

IMHO, this thread contains some really good records along with some rubbish, which is precisely what you're bound to get with any genre (or however you want to phrase it) and a range of tastes. Of course, it's always been thus. The thing I really don't get though is the apparent preoccupation with 'banging uptempo' ... is everyone off their tits? Anything less than frothing at the mouth pace, all friggin night, is seen by some as a non-starter, which immediately renders obselete and effectively unplayable some of the greatest records ever played on the scene - again, IMHO of course. Moreover, any dj daring to play anything less than 'uptempo' is seen as being guilty of 'killing' (or at least wounding) a night it seems. Wasn't that one of the skills that separated the top lads from also rans and selling platers like me: the ability to mix it up and blend records together? I ask as someone who danced virtually solid all night at every venue I went to for about 15 years, until my knees fell off I honestly can't recall that mentality prevailing (since about 82 - the last couple of years. It certainly didn't make me sit and stroke my chin just because it wasn't 'uptempo'. Come to think of it though, I was off my tits for a fair proportion of that time ) Hard as I try I still don't get it and the most worrying bit I think is that the drive to keep it 'banging' dictates, inevitably, that records that would never, were never and will never be good enough get major plays while rafts of high quality mid-tempo stuff lies dormant. It's day will come again I hope. In the meantime, an hour (or sometimes hour after hour ) of 'banging, funky-edged' tackle can quite easily merge into a seemingly endless, messy, brass-laden, fuzzy guitar-driven racket. (Theron & Darrell on the other hand ) Being a realist, I do recognise though that I'm in a minority of maybe 3 nationally - even that may be optimistic - so I'll stick to the local broom cupboards for now and wait for father time to take his inevitable toll on you maniacs:lol:

  8. Need to pay some bills and getting payment from customers at work is like getting blood from a stone at the mo so here's one or two things up for grabs. I'll do postage (SD) on anything over £100 otherwise add £2 for rec del. Concealed cash, cq to P Threlfall, 59 Bluebell Way, Bamber Bridge, Preston, Lancs PR5 6XQ. Paypal (as gift please) Philip@threlfall.fsbusiness.co.uk All strictly graded and at least Ex unless stated. As ever, money back if you're not happy. One or two less than mint bits here at what I hope are good prices so it may be an opportunity for the less fussy amongst you to pick some decent records up cheap. All play fine and are certainyl ok to DJ with, minimally. I've tried to give as good and fair a description as poss as I'd rather folk were pleasantly as opposed to unpleasantly surprised. If I'm miles out on any prices make me what you think is a decent offer by all means (don't take the piss though): 1. Little Charles & Sidewinders - talkin' about you babe (Decca demo) £65 vg+ or better, scuffs dnap. Great, great record for not much dosh 2. Edwin Starr - you're my mellow / my kind of woman (Ric Tic demo) £125 Awesome double-sider of course, plays great. Some wol on 'woman' side and I'd say it was a bit better than vg+ overall. Demo books for sommat daft as I recall 7. Buddy Lamp - next best thing / little bit of lovin' (D-Town) £50 ON HOLD 8. Whispers - the dip (Dore) £75 Name in pen on 'dip' side and label is torn across Dore logo (tear is 1cm wide and about 4cm across label). 18. Dunno if mods can help? (Or am I just being feckless and idle and need to do a new post altogether?) Anyway, I've just revised and updated the sales post I did on 14th Sept but, being a complete IT idiot, can't move, cut or paste it.
