Northern Nightmares / Hall Of Shame
And isn't he the chairman of Everton FC? Also saw a UK Northern Soul CD containing tracks by (I think) David Essex and The Brotherhood of man plus other highly dubious names - anyone know of it?

How Many Nighter Venues Have There Been ?
Remember it now Chalky, great to see the old Echoes ad (remember it as Black Echoes originally). Been counting Nighter venues instead of sheep and came up with Herne Bay (Kent) from the 80s. There were a couple of Nighters at the Spinney in Norwich back in the early 70s but way before my time... Mark C

How Many Nighter Venues Have There Been ?
Remember it well - Northern room was upstairs at first and can still picture Clarkie spinning Delegates of Soul (newie at the time I think) in a little box up some steps at the side of the room. Think it then went to a one room only event in the large ballroom downstairs with the plushest toilets ever!! Don't think Lincoln Drill Hall has been mentioned plus a couple of Nighters were held at the Samson & Hercules in Norwich when St Ivo shut (1977). I also did a one-off Nighter at Norwich UEA in '89 but this probably doesn't count. Also remember going to the 2nd Nighter on the Strand, London at some Dance School but it was cancelled and buses were laid on to the replacement venue above some Jamaican hangout. Mark C

I wasn't on the original Nighter coach (bit too young) but ran the coaches to the Dayers and odd nighter in the mid-eighties. Used to pick up a couple of girls in Norwich centre - Linda Grigglestone and Pat Eves. Anybody know what happended to them - legendary couple!! Mark C- A Open Question To Dave Thorley
I can remember going to the two and a half year anniversary! Mark C- Famous People Into Soul, Not P.weller
When Chris Waddle moved from Newcastle to Spurs he made the comment in a magazine that he was into N.Soul but wouldn't hear any in London! Les Ferdinand has quite a collection too, I've been tpld Mark C- Arti Fullilove - Santa Claus Please Listen To Me
The track was included on a Goldmine/Soul Supply CD called "The Soul of Wigan Casino" Mark C- Asking A Favour From All You
Kirsty, am going to ask Billy to donate one of his "BILLY" shirts - preferably the one with "DON'T IT MAKE YA FEEL FUNKY" on the back (don't think he needs it any more after the funk topic on All About The Soul!) Seriously, will arrange for something to be done at this end (Norfolk) Best Mark Chamberlin- Frank Wilson, Kenny Burrell & Record Collector
Hope he plays guitar better than he dances lol !! Mark Chamberlin- Lost Years Of The 1980s
Remember it well Frank, and when that coach load turned up from London I had to smile nicely at the doormen and we did a 50/50 split but, hey, we didn't do it for the money. It was just great being involved in something that all the "faces" seemed to turn up for. I look back at the 80s (Buzzard, OddFellows, Mansfield etc etc) with Andy & Michelle Gill , Cobby, Rachel , Steve J (RIP) Annie (The Rural Mafia) and indeed they were great times but then see what's on offer now - Middleton, Burnley, Stoke, 100 Club, Lifeline etc etc all doing the business plus the great Rugby All-Nighters in 2008 !! Mark- Lost Years Of The 1980s
Chalky, Great of you to mention the Norwich AllNighter in '89 that I was responsible for. We had a turnout of 350+ on that night that was incredible for the location etc. Unfortunately, the light came through the sky lights in a big way so we never held another. Norwich was really buzzing at that time with the Back Street soul club attracting a loyal local crowd and others travelling from afar. Makes me weep to see how Norwich has slumped in the last 20 years (and I don't just mean the Football Team) Mark Chamberlin- 7 Miles Per Hour Band On Ebay
Chris, not surprised about City - the players can't understand the managers' accent from the touchline !! ATB Mark- Low Attendances At Latest Shopping Centre Dos
talking about mr whizz again, doc? lol prof- Solo Or Social? Northern Soul Best Shared Or Alone?
I think your point about poor sound systems is spot on. In this year alone I have been to at least 4 different venues where the sound has been appalling - why does this constantly happen? Presumably some promoters are just hiring out a shit rig to save money but I know that technical faults can also occur. Mark Chamberlin- I Know I Should Not Like It , But I Do
All of these would still fill the floor at "The Talk" in Norwich!! Mark Chamberlin- Your Favourite Modern Soul Choons ?
Unfortunately I don't own the record (not a collector - just love the music) but can remember Rob Smith used to play it at Keele (c/u as Merlin & the Magicians I believe) On the same subject I think the Melvin Moore was c/u as Sir Wales Wallace - Just like that. I'm a bit of an obsessive when it comes to cover ups! Sorry - going off the theme of this thread a bit! Mark C- Your Favourite Modern Soul Choons ?
Here's a few of my favourites - Marc Sadane - One minute from love Mind and Matter - I'm under your spell Donny Gerrard - He's always somewhere around Quality!! Mark Chamberlin- Mexborough [who Remembers]
Some of us lads used to come up from Norwich, mid 80s I think. We also went to similar nighters at Chesterfield (The Winding Wheel) and Mansfield (Swan Hotel) Still got some old tapes of that night with Rob Marriott, Keb, Guy and George Sharp DJing. Yes, great days indeed!! Mark Chamberlin- Bags?
Hello I did my own thing and got a pair of trousers made - didn't want the fully fledged Bags version so went to a 24 inch bottom (with the compulsory Turn-Ups of course). Cost me £60 which I thought was very reasonable. So you might find a little old lady tailoress locally like I did.- Strange Places To Hear Northern
Also heard Ann Sexton in Roys of Wroxham (local Norfolk store) so it must be doing the rounds on a "how to get your customers in the spending mood" cd - st.ives allnighters
