Birth Of Modern Soul
Well for my part in this topic, id like to add , the northern soul scene , would,nt be where it is today if it was,nt for the modern, crossover type stuff.... there would have been a lot less people into it now... it as kept the scene alive.. And on the motown tip, ( and just to add i do like al the northern oldies + 60s motown still ) motown did bring out a few modern type bits, originals , ( love town ) + the b. side. also thelma houston - dont leave me this way, + others along the way. right into the 80s.. as did Philly also... which they did alot better, i may add. But alot of the so called modern stuff came out on small, rare 45s or lp tracks only... and is still coming out . as modern is always movin forward... NOT saying all of it is good quality... but some is top class.... and iv not even mentioned the SOULFUL HOUSE, stuff... ha. IM lucky enough to enjoy nearly all of it ... a rare one .. ha. QUALITY will always shine on through....... B.womack , S.wright, T.davis, Latimore , P.mitchell , etc, etc. There is room on a good soul event to all share the same room... but at weekenders sometimes havin the 2 rooms can make sense... i would,nt mind etheir way... then again, i can Dance to both... cheers , martyn

Where Are They
There's a club I attend in Tokyo, which runs every other month...it is the ultimate chin-strokers / anoraks / collectors meet up point, ...... You will aways get people of all types, inc.. the above mentioned, + the ones who want to have a dance, where its whats in the grooves that count.... Each to is own really.... But i feel you need people up on the floor to have a good nite out... not just chillin out ? Unless like above they have no Dancefloor.... Room for both.. But for people to traval a fair way , etc. a dancing event is needed.... for me defo ... as iv always loved the DANCING , = FEELIN ONE GETS FROM THE MUSIC, WHILE ON THE FLOOR, + MEETING PEOPLE , AT the same time.... etc. you can always chin stroke it , when the old knees give in, ha. Not that long for me to go then.. ha. cheers all . martyn

-
The Second Most Important Venue
um... depending on if you went there or if it was good for the music i suppose, i.e the mecca, for giving us crossover in the early days, But my choice would be , CLEETHORPES PIER. and SOUTHPORT, for the weekenders.... so thats 2, ha.

A Great Shame
Pete , well all i can say to that is good luck, still can,t really understand why you dont go past the 1969 barrier.. But each to is own. Expect you have enough stuff to play already ha. and we would both be dead before we could play through them all, true.. as iv 2000 cds + 2000 lps, + 800 45s etc, except mine go from 1950s blue note upto now, ha cheers mate, martyn

I Don't Believe It - It's Finally Finished
[ REG If you happen to see this post, just like to say got your book from amazon monday, and what a top read , almost read it all , already, ha. Reminds me , like you say about my starting on my search for soul too, ha. except a few different places.. and different weekenders, etc. but WE may have crossed a few paths , as we used to also visit the ritz des , also. As my mate is a dj there, steve jeffries , expect i would have bumped into you on the floor, doing all my spins, ha. true.. anyway ill look out for you now mate, all the best , martyn (leic)

A Great Shame
What can i say, still stand by my comment mate, you,re missing a lot of stuff... do you play vinyl or cds at home, the most ? .. to turn off at say 1969 ? is a sin mate, ha... Have you thought about getting a real hi-fi set up ? which type of system do you use at home then ? Might be a good thing to get a real hi-fi , if you hav,nt ? as some can sound brillient, pete. And dont need to cost the earth, if say get a deal from richer sounds ... maybe im lucy as i enjoy most of the 60s soul + jazz, also 70s, some 80s and right upto soulful house, and the nu-jazz thing too.. suppose you save more cash your way , ha, martyn

A Great Shame
Pete mate, hold on a min, iv not read all the posts yet, But dont just turn off if the records after 1969 how mad is that, And i dont just mean cos you poss dont like the 70s type stuff, or modern or crossover, whatever..... if that person told you that you would have liked the stafford stuff ??? then most of them were late late 60s early 70s pete ?? you cant just rule out soul by the DATE. ... and looking at the bottom of your posts you mention Boogaloo. latin etc.??? well nearly all the fania stuff did,nt come out till the 70s mate. you,re missing so much, have a re think pete, cheers martyn
