  1. Hopefully this little bit of trivia and fact will help draw a line under the fabulous Marton outing..... I think I may be the first Northern Soul person to hear it and........turn it down! Record dealer George Greco(Passaic, New Jersey) played it me in 1977 and offered at $100. As I had a cosy relationship with George and not paying more than 20 bucks for anything from him, I found is offer 'insulting' and promptly refused to pay his 'crazy asking price'. The record was then sold to Martin Koppell. I lost the trail on it until late 1978. What I can tell you is, the Orange reissue was made in New Jersey. The reason I remember that part is, that several months later I moved to New York to live and met GG regularly and saw copies of the re-do in stores in the NY/NJ area alongside the doo-wop reissues of the day. I suspect the chain of events went a little like this.........Original sold to Northern dealer, DJ breaks it at Wigan, Demand builds, UK wholesaler orders quantity from US dealer who in turn runs a few extra for the burgeoning Doo Wop/Soul oldies market on America's East and West Coast. Happy Days except for yours truly 'the chump' who left for $100. BTW.....Anyone got one for sale?(Blue label only please)
  2. Mark...Thanks for reminding me. That's where my memory faded. I used the Rampage inst from the tapes I got from George Kerr, obviously I missed using the Flirtations inst for some reason. As Pete identified, it wasn't used on cd either. I must have decided not to use it at all. Just as a piece of side trivia and still not answering Daz's thread starter.....the song was originally commissioned by Herb Abramson as a Toothpaste commercial. The TV ad was used apparently and became popular, hence Herb's green light to Sidney Barnes to enhance the melody into.........a bloody fantastic Northern dancer
  3. Did it not get a release on Goldmine cd?
  4. Is it really? As you can see from the acetate though I did intend the inst to come out.
  5. Nice to see the acetate. That's my writing by the way. Cheers Kev
  6. It did get a legal release via the LP Record Collector on Destiny in 1979. Herb Abramson owner of Festival was a friend of mine and he's the one who is responsible for the license plus the Babysitters and Charlotte Stokes on Tip. All mentioned before in previous threads.
  7. The winner was Martin Alsop of Nottingham and co-promoter of the Ibstock All Nighter. He still has it.
  8. Bob...no idea on that one. All I remember is, I spent a pleasant afternoon listening to reels of 60's tapes owned by Herb. Most were Sidney Barness/JJ Jackson penned demos. When 'To Get To Know Ya' came up, he referred to it as the Superiors and Okeh solo artist Ken Williams.
  9. I'm sure I answered this question a few years ago. 1. It ain't a boot. Herb pressed 300 of each and I bought them all for the uk market. Sadly the quality was so poor, they didn't sell. 2. This and Charlotte Stokes Is this the price I have to pay were both unreleased demos that Herb Abramson(owner of Festival records and Original Atlantic partner) gave to me in 1977/78. 3. Same source gave me the instrumental acetate of Stronger than her love. Sadly Herb is no longer with us.
  10. I can't remember. It was around the time I came back from LA and I was swimming in top drawer finds only to be outsmarted by the Javells, Gary Lewis etc. I then got into the Bobby Franklin, Snoopy Dean grooves and let some of my discoveries such as the Seven Souls slip away for pennies. I certainly didn't hang onto JC for long!
  11. Pete- The Out of the Past label came in late 73. There is no way Lynne Randell was a big Torch record. Hose Streeters...come on in! When Ian Levine took over at the Mecca from Keith Minshull in the Late Summer of 73, it became one of his first major spins. The White OOTP came first........I worked out of Marsh Parade, Newcastle at the time for Chris Burton.
  12. Couple to clear up...... Lynne Randell(Mecca 1973 after the Torch had closed. Ian Levine). Never remember this at the Torch. Joanne Courcey(Twirl) a failed Wigan spin in 1974. I found this in a Soul Pack from a Belper, Derbys newsagents along with Paula Durante-Your Not My Kind. Happy New Year......
  13. Selling on behalf of a close friend, the 1967 recorded, 1970 released NOW YOU GOT THE UPPER HAND-CANDI STATON on Unity. A guaranteed original, Soul Sam's old copy. £1,200 ono. Extremely scarce and rarely comes up for sale. PM with any questions.
  14. On the IPhone App or via Tunein Radio.
  15. Sadly not. The songs are highlighted as they play out but no listings.
  16. We know absolutely nothing about it. If Sooty could get in touch and let us know what it's all about(2013 wise) it would be useful.
  17. I'll never say never, but the acts are dying off plus Richie Rosen will be the only one making any money!
  18. Take a listen to Hold Back The Dawn and hear the throatiness. It's JR on SDTL.
  19. In answer to Sean and Dave.......My radio pal Bobby Jay was a very close friend of JR Bailey. He was the one who told me it was JR on the Chuck Wood track. In fact he went further by suggesting JR and Vernon Harrell often moonlighted on a variety of 60's Soul cuts whenever the record company were not keen on the 'chosen vocalist'. Of course that opens a whole new debate based on those assumptions ie Al Wilson-Help Me, Rubin -You've Been Away.
  20. I think he mentioned Charlotte Stokes was in the group. Maybe Sidney Barnes knows? He was still pretty emotional over his Atlantic fall out.
  21. I have ayes it at a few gigs but don't fancy posting it up anywhere. It's only a demo and not the actual backing track to Jackie Wilson. Historic piece and one off too.
