  1. yeah capletons jah jah citys wicked...got a 12" medley of all the tracks on that riddim...capleton was a slack/gun man dj till someone got shot dead at a manchester gig and changed almost overnight to hard core rasta...tour was another massive one for him in the 90s bujus in jail now i think...undercover old bill set him up with a big coke deal...and hes been all rasta since he started knockin about with ziggy marley and lost his record deal through the homophobic boom bye bye!
  2. uk reggae was massive right through the 70s till they just tried to copy the jamaicans too much with the ragga thing and lost their way...and the young black kids got into hip hop or dance/drum and bass...often wondered about all the great acts and guess theyre still makin money from dubplates...some still come to bristol but not like it was even in the 90s when i first moved here...john s has got chris lane from fashion records coming down at the end of the month....fashion/saxon ran things for years....how could i forget mi god mi king!...papa levi,...first uk act to go number one in jamaica i believe...can remember being on a mini bus in jamaica when tippa irie came on the radio...proud to be british! lol... seen beres too...when i was workin with sound systems all the ladies loved gregory and beres...gregorys live lp is a classic...like soul so many unique reggae voices
  3. love my modern reggae too...(hate modern soul)...out of the loop for the last 8ish years but from about 87 just after the digital dancehall started up right to about mid 2000s was djing and buying loads... seen gregory a few times...all in jamaica, one time on a beach with a 2ft wooden stage!!...both uk gigs he didnt turn upto!...wasnt well remember when sizla first came on the scene..very influential to alot of young djs...although copying capletons bobo dread style...still prefer buju! off top of my head digital dancehall..no order rumours-gregory...awesome when this came out..wicked bassline murderer-buju...on coco teas tune in/far east riddim my girl-ini kamozi wicked act-yt...best white act? rastaman in new york-forgot the act! kingston town -alborosie lots of signs-tenor saw sara-frankie paul here i come-barrington levy one blood-jr reid but could be a hundred others! dean
  4. as hard as a top ten soul!....sticking to 'skinhead' reggae/ska... no order... dry ice-upsetters john jones-rudy mills riding for a fall-delroy wilson im in love-techniques...surprised not in yours john! on the town bunny and ruddy caution -wailers free man ethiopians hold down-kingstonians time hard-george dekkar city riot prince buster probably would be different if i was at home with my records!... dean
  5. white van man on a budget so has to be b...if it plays good it will do...always nice to have minters but always the cheaper tunes for me... very rarely upgrade...too many other tunes to buy!!... collect full run of artist/label?...no,same reason too many tunes i actually like that i wanna buy dean
  6. im sure the footwork would have come from the black artists.... back drops?...can remember the remaining teds doin that at the youth clubs in the mid 70s when i was a kid got a dvd with kev darbe saying everyone was into kung fu in the mid 70s and thats where the kicks came from ? dean rex garvin -you dont need no help...you can do it by yourself! https://youtu.be/yy4-oC6NjUU https://youtu.be/7jNaScs33bg
  7. forgot ive got this on a 10" somewhere.... https://youtu.be/8dGxDseH3G4
  8. shit loads better IMO but whenever i play this it reminds me of the snake... https://youtu.be/4nauz2J90m4
  9. camber sands in july...yep many weller haircuts and ska bands...but some good bands too and two nighters in the soul room cnt vouch for all but sarge, pete kelross, mischief,me and a few others play off originals...always a good laugh as far as the snake goes...loved it when i was 17.....done to death and theres loads better to play now so dont wanna hear it out now but its no worse than a lot of 'poppy' soul played in northerns 'golden heyday'...think the lyrics are good though myself
  10. gospel bob??...never heard him play any gospel recently...must remember to ask him next time another vote for morrisey..top tune!....;-).. (sorry off topic but... pete, reading a book about two tone and politics and happen to read last nite about costello tune...apparently 13000 made!...i heard only 2000..so not very rare at all really) dean

  15. so long as its marked up as such i done mind the selling of old bootlegs....the original bootlegger has long since made his money and the owner is just selling on secondhand goods...i can also understand ebay not knowing or having the time to check if every item is/was legit... the pages of mint, so obviously, newly made bootlegs is a different matter.... dean

others on here can answer better than me but i wonder how much the artists get from cds either?....i would have thought the owners of the rights to most of the songs we like(smaller lesser known tracks/artists) are the produders, song wrtiers,studio/label owners and not the artists anyway??... they probably make more money coming over and doin live shows ! my objection to ovo has always been about the number of nights on and damage 'to the scene' that does...as you say nick the artists get nothing from second hand sales dean
  18. nah...two tracks with two completely different attitudes,or whatever the musical term is!...surley the mash up thing is old hat now anyway??...a few lines sampled on a 'danced' up remix (fat boy slim etc) will always be about depending on the 'new' dance style but think mash ups are just a gimmic that is way past its sell buy date IMO dean
  19. yeah think there was 2000 elvis costellos ...i suppose 100000 doesnt make it rare to us but considering the ammounts the specials sold there must still be collecters out there who havnt got it?...got the ones i mentioned years ago for a couple of quid each....looking at popsike might be worth selling!...got a copy of mojo somewhere from a couple years back did a two tone issue with prices think braggin was about 20 ish ? dean
  20. is it braggin they are watchin?...the specials are very popular at the moment both with 'born again' mods and rude boys with money in their pockets and youngsters and some are collectable...'braggin' being one of them along with concrete jungle/raqael-ghost town revisted-ricos jungle music-elvis costellos girls talk and the friday clubs window shopping dean
  21. conner rooney from gloucester another teenage dj buying originals...anyone mentioned sue taylor, nick and tracy shaw, sallie reynolds, chrissie osbourne and jo wallace?...more lady djs... sitting here at work and came up with this list off the top of my half asleep head...all good ORIGINAL dancers not overplayed and all bought for under a tenner...if i was at home would be dozens more as most of us on here could do...whatever your views on ovo not having the money for originals is not a reason to DJ with boots of mainly overplayed oldies how long esquires im lonely bobby byrd love is the master bob brady i found a young girl wayne talbert im your special fool nancy wilson a change mustangs hes the one you love inez fox nice and easy barbara lynn dont destroy me margie hendrix worried joe l wait until tomorrow spirit of st louis cant stop loving my baby ray charles stop and think tommy bush ive got a secret accents people get it together eddie floyd youre driving me insane sammy j im a man of action jimmy hughes and any number of well known motown ,atlantic and duke records etc dean
  22. Don't think we can expect too many youngsters too travel with the cost of passing your test and running a car today!!....could be the reason there are more in the big cities and hot spots like the nw as far as the mid 80s goes...the scene may have been dead but northern soul wasn't!...5-10000 scooterists on rallies with alters and live acts like Edwin,Mary wells,jj Barnes,Eddie holma an etc...not all into northern but most were....and we weren't mod either!!!!!
  23. Some great replies as id hoped...have a top xmas everybody ...and a stomping new year whether it be to oldies rnb new stuff or funky
  24. keep it up brett youre on the right track (no pun intended)...keep to originals, dont have to spend loads...some crackin lesser known with some cheaper classics thrown in....enjoy it most of all! dean
  25. WOW!...must have been a buzz...love it when youngsters get into it....seen a few out over the year incuding a couple of kids under 10 at rallies!!...although not got very good jobs i suppose money wise lucky as neither me or my partner has kids..ive a stepdaughter from a previous relationship and sadly dont see her much now but know from the past the money involved!...would have been great if she was into northern ..tried for years but wouldnt have it!
