  10. Yes thats the one, thanks for the info . Listening to Chalkys now fab sounds !
  11. I am just listening to this podcast , what a fab way to hear sounds that are not played as the norm by the "apostles" of soul . Have to applaud Andy for doing this. Not many with such a collection would advertise its contents on the net , keeping them close so that you had to travel to hear them. Well not anymore ! and well done you for doing it . This is the kind of attitude that takes the scene forward . I would like to thank Andy for all of us that do struggle to go to nighters that appreciate those sounds that are just not available to us at soul nights. I do hope many more follow his lead . So many great tracks I have not heard before , it really is a joy to hear them. Can anyone tell me who sings Take a look ?
  12. I don't believe the scene is dying , like you Bob i believe you have different crowds wanting different things one isn't killing the other. To be sure those that want to hear the same stuff every week are the greater percentage. But one thing nobody has mentioned is that the same old can also be applied to a sound that may have been played in the last five years and also classed as an expensive rarity. Its a question of how many times do you have to hear any sound before you tire of it. You see many fall into the trap of playing what they know works for others so what then happens is everyone is playing the same sound. before you know it you start to tire of the sound whatever camp it sits in. For me I admire a DJ that changes at least 50% of the sounds with every booking , offers you something fresh and imaginative. Nothing worse than knowing what he/she will play regardless of how much it cost to aquire it. Also someone that is guided by their own taste rather than what works for others is a big plus for me. I love hearing collectors play for the "love" of sharing their collection offers the best scenario where people have played doing it for no payment offers the greatest reward musicaslly. I guess because money isn't involved and the pressure is removed to please the larger crowd along with no reputation to maintain all adds to the best coming out of a player.... there is no fear of failing to please. Yes I find the collectors rooms inspire me the most nowadays.
  13. Bobo I think what comes over to me is his love of soul and I really like the way he values the lower priced records , I don't know him , but he sounds like a nice man even though I have heard he is a bit of a drama queen at times ... but then arn't we all if we are honest.
  14. The one I would be chasing which was bang on target for me was the Hank Soulman Mulan ? He upset your dream. I like its energy and eathyness.
  15. He gets one of these for playing Johnny Moore - I'm sold on you , one I have often played at home and always said I should play it in a chill out session , fab record for a tenner !
  16. 'The way to be a good DJ is to play good cheap and expensive records and not care about, react to, or emulate other DJs. I do agree that there is a trend to play only rare or expensive records but instead of complaining about it you should do something positive and be a good DJ without trying to explicitly react to anything' I really like your way of thinking Bob . Thanks for the detailed post . I shall listen tomorrow night with an open ear. He earns bonus points from me for not staying safe by playing what he knows works because someone else plays them. He has the funds and contacts to buy a guaranteed hit list , he is showing imagination in sourcing what he feels isn't genrally known so thats a tick in my book. Whether I like his choice remains to be seen .. bit like jukebox jury isn't it
  17. I think this is a silly thread its like discussing how many Gay people happen to like cornflakes in comparison to other types of sexual preferences lets say who do .
  18. Do you wanna know what I reckon , and I never went , Great dancers were at the front and the not so great didn't dance near them cause they didn't want to be shown up ... image is everything when you are 17
  19. I will just say regardless of past opinions I would trust Adys judgement in booking Mr Levine , its going to be entertaining for sure. I do feel sorry for him because many of you have such high expectations from the guy he is really going to have to pull one almighty rabbit , good luck to him for having the balls to face the wolves. If there is one thing I admire about him its his bravery to keep entering what can be a bit of a snake pit at times. It's a human jungle don't you think ?... I always punt for the under dog
  20. Goodness me , this is a difficult question , we tie ourselves up so many times trying to catagorise soul it gets very confusing , for me its better to describe what it isn't and I could be wrong because my opinion is not gospel , its just my take on it . Its not northern , its not fast , its not girly like the saphires for example , its not modern , its not detroit sounding . I think it can lean to southern sounding ,its mellow and its fresh , not the norm its anything that is unusual "out of the box" . I have found Nev a good source of education in the CD's he did for me. My fave sounds are Top tune for me is Daniel Madison - It don't matter baby Rare Gems Odessy - It don't take much , absulute maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaajic , and cheap Clay Brown .......anything by him Clinton Parks - Masterplan Irene Scott - Everyday worries Cornell Guntor - In my heart
  21. Can't make Feb , but will try very hard to make May , it will be so nice to see the City in the summer
  22. Glad you enjoyed it Phil , it was a lovely surprise to see you at York. Jay was telling me he was outside when he heard it and he had to come up to find out what it was. A fantastic sound that is so cheap and sounds like it costs a packet. Like I said to Jay you can't go wrong with anything that the Esquires have done, thats if you like group harmonies. I love their "You got the power" too. I can't wait for my return visit to York , I loved playing there. I just hope next time I get to play more records , there was many more needing play that don't normally see the decks other than my own ones at home. Its the same for Nige. I really like the concept/vision at York , I do hope it is sucessful for all those involved in promoting those sounds and collectors that don't normally have a chance to play for whatever reasons. I myself wouldn't like to play too often to the mass public, believe me they are very demanding I prefer to select what best suits me and to do something like this now and then that gives me great personal pleasure. Its nice to see a variety of players too we can sometimes assume that only certain people can offer you something different and exciting, because they are established names and have expensive collections . I know of many that would shine at this event just using their own style of selection. This invitation for me was a gift from the gods
  23. Wow what a great read Spike ! thanks for this
