  1. Had such an amazing night last night , felt the need to spread the love and share it with anyone that likes to read stuff like this. Long ago in the times of 60's and 70's you could venture down town into Manchester City center and have your pick of the clubs , Rafters ,Tiffs , Caroline's to name but three and basically experience "soul" without really thinking too much about it, you were guaranteed a great night wherever you went , the crowd then were people just out for a good time, no attention was paid to labels and who was singing the tune or the fact that you played a bluesy track or funk track with what we call northern track, basically anything soulful was enjoyed and the city Buzzed with soulful activity. Well last night I felt a return to that period of time , had the most amazing night in the company of "Young" people with the exact outlook as mentioned above , and boy did they enjoy the nectar that the guys from the Black Bee Soul club played for them. It was so great to see them all dance in their own style with their own fashion and revel in the delight that is sweet Soul music . We arrived in town around 8pm , we knew the Bar was in Thomas street and ventured to find it in the rain with Cabs streaming passed like boats , we ducked and dived avoiding massive puddles to eventually find the bar , walked in and the place was buzzing . My first words to Browny were bloody hell there are loads of blokes in here and most of them under 35 ! I couldn't believe it , we met Paul at the bar and joined Natasha and friends on a table near the decks for a fabulous night. It wasn't long before people were wigglin and then dancing , trying to copy the moves and looking on in astonishment at the younger guy being able to drop to the floor and rise up again in dance. Reminded me of Madam Jo Jo's in Soho when we went to experience a Keb Darge night . the night was simply about enjoyment and feeling the beat. I do hope we can experience this night again and again and again .... It was soul cafe culture in the heart of the city , brilliant night it all sounded so FRESH . and it was the first time I have got up and got down in three months and how good it felt to dance to James Brown Thank you Paul and Sam ... for restoring my faith in that there is a future for these sounds for the next 15 years at least. I feel so privileged being here at the right time in the right place. Carms x

  3. What I love about the younger persons adventure is that it reminds me that we the older people tend to get so wrapped up in the baggage that we over look the freshness of lets say a rested commercial sound that to the young persons ears sounds awesome.Last night I heard a number of forgotten out of focus sounds that sounded brilliant in a packed bar full of young people who just could not keep still to them. Syl Johnson Sorry bout dat , and the Temptations You're all I need to name two tunes that you just wouldn't normally hear out in whatever camp you sit in , be it oldies or newies , yes they could teach us a few things
  4. I respect very much those among us that have put the time in and discovered many sounds today that were missed back then , but you know we can get up our own backsides at times. Why can't you just be pleased that there is an interest and encourage that interest instead of nit picking about efforts made and not made to abide by your standards and rules . I am sorry but a few of you come over like the grumpy old men in the balcony and its not like that for young people , its about having the TIME OF THEIR LIVES ...just like you did .
  5. Most definitely yes we tend to forget that when we were young we didn't take it seriously and never gave it much thought that we would be still be sharing our love for soul music in 2013 , so why should we burden/question anyone about a future commitment of their time in the next 30 years , let them evolve as we did. There is most certainly an appreciation and a passion for those sounds by the young people I have seen in Manchester
  6. Chalks do you still have the unlimited Four ?
  7. Hope you are now comfy at home Dave , ease up mate your body is telling you to slow down xx Carms
  8. Great collection of sounds I bet they were awesome heard in that environment.
  9. I had a go at creating a cloud today , just a few taken from my box of inexpensive sounds. https://www.mixcloud.com/carmenmccullough14/carmsoulicious-1/
  10. Oh Pete I am sorry to hear you are having a bad time of it at the moment I do hope good times soon come back for you , I always remember you as the guy with the lolly at the 100 , you always had a cheeky smile for everyone. Take care xx Carms
  11. One of the directors at work who has to be mid 40's reminds me so much of those times , he dresses just the same , button down check shirts and V-necks , at first he reminded me of a fat Simon Bridger He never carries a briefcase , always a duffle type bag... I sometimes wonder if he has bricks in his bag He's a known stretford ender raised in Salford...Its funny how some people just have that presence to make you feel fear with just a look. Streel combs come to mind
  12. Tunes that stood out for me from that time were :- 54-46 Vietnam LIquidator cherio baby Al Capone Skinhead moon stomp Wet Dream Stone Love Aint' too proud to beg Beauty only skin deep Hey girl don't bother me was No 1 Sex Machine Hey America Funky Nassau Move on Up Under the boardwalk Saturday Night at the movies At the club Up on a roof Sign on the dotted line Be young be foolish be happy Westbound No 9 Little piece of leather I spy for the FBI The color pallette was wine and bottle green , also king fisher and stone And tights had patterns up the side , My suit was two tone bottle green and gold ;) The pictures posted earlier really do take me back. Handbags were boxed , brolly was a must and that little bottle of BRUT was a statement. I recall hitching to Birmingham once and going to a club in Chelmsley Wood and noticing a few girls wearing smocks , then the smock swing coat evolved ...and Chelsea Girl was the place to shop Studs in hankys And people used to fight a lot , sometimes girls that were mates dressed identically like wearing the same ben sherman or brutus shirt, also we danced the same dance in formation like in pairs or groups . And it was a time of rolling in mud in your levi's and sitting in a hot bath with them on
  13. In 71-72 where I lived the fashion was skins , it was a smart look , rather than an aggressive one , there were those that liked the monkey boots braces and sideburns look , but I knew more the types that wore button down shirts with a crombie overcoats and Two tone suits V-neck sweaters and loafers. This then evolved into the smoothie look where the collars became round and the hair longer and feathered , clothes stayed pretty much the same Football was King , lots of aggro as they would say Sounds .. club soul is what I listened to and Motown along with Reggae and the album to have was Tighten up Volume 2 I knew lads that used to be into soul who at weekends traveled to well known soul clubs in Manchester , being in the forces they were natural skinheads Top Rank Hanley , Wheel , and King Mojo in Shefield to mention the names that came up in conversation

  17. Me neither , only trouble is the production is much quieter
  18. So sad I missed seeing him, it was just impossible for me to come and support a great artist who hasn't had it easy. So pleased he is getting this much deserved support today . My fave is changing by the minute which has this awesome flip , fed to me by MickD a few years back .
  19. Oh little Av l am so shocked and sad to read this. I didnt know Peter very well but I could see he was your soul mate . My heart goes out to you and your family x Carms
  20. Thanks guys , this is brilliant because I can see people contributing that I have never seen post before . Everyone can contribute to this thread , because we all have a top ten oildie list within us.
  21. Some fab lists , thanks everyone for taking part , its great to have an insight to which oldies still work well for those that are in the main listening to tunes which are more on the underplayed side.
  22. The way I see it is you are never to old to learn or start to appreciate something you discounted before . I hate soul snobbery and try to avoid contact with anyone that may think they are a cut above the rest , lets just say i keep them at arms length. Look at me only 4 weeks ago at Banbury , when Charlie played Gwen Owens Mess up a good thing. I forgot the sound but knew it was familiar, it bugged me all week until it popped its head up in Andrea's Eurp playlist ... I can't dance to it but love it . A bit of soul humility never hurt anyone. It constantly happens to me with "impressions" tracks.
  23. Thanks lads , nice to see what still hits your soul from way back then , it will be interesting to see which one's appear many times on peoples lists. 3 for the Charades already
