  1. Yes, the H&G is in a good location. We alternate with them at the Washington Sunday Soul Sessions, and many of the same group attend all three venues (Horti included), but that's about it for rare stuff around here. Shame about the Cumby Arms. There's a small do in Rotherham at the Three Horseshoes and they struggle for numbers as well. They keep going though, 'cos they just love playing the sounds, and good luck to them.
  2. Our view at Darnall Horti is that we play what we want - mainly rare and underplayed, all on OVO. Our guests are under no instructions. We fill a niche that does attract a regular, though not massive, solid level of support, some of whom travel quite long distances. Those that don't like what we play go elsewhere. We don't feel under any particular pressure to fill the dancefloor, but it is, of course, good to see when it happens. We have recently noticed a slow trend towards appreciation of our DJs and music. Hopefully that will continue. We don't have issues with anyone else, we just provide an alternative. It seems to work reasonably well, though we would, of course, love to welcome a few more along.
  3. Yes, I suppose it's a balancing act for them. How much can they screw from the punters before usage levels start to fall too far as customers look elsewhere.
  4. It's a bloody rip-off. Time to sell more privately, or use another site.
  5. Ther are a few about Pete
  6. Just quick story that I think sums up the situation with some auction prices. A couple of years ago I was spinning a particular record, when a guy jumped up on the stage. He looked at it and said he had a copy of it, and told me what he had paid for it. I told him that my near mint copy had been only half his price. 'Ah yes', he said, 'but I bought mine from Manship.' With that he stuck his nose in the air and pranced off. I have no issue with John Manship, he's a legitmate dealer, and good luck to him, but he does attract from very strange customers.

He'll be back - on many a turntable, and rightly so. One of the very best ever.

  11. Yep, can't blame the seller in any way. Just sold my boot of I Can't Get Away for £7.60 - probably about right.
  12. Has this one been done? I pass no comment. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121067759655?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
  13. British UA issue in VG++ condition. £120 incl.P&P. Please send PM if interested. Thanks, John
  14. There appear to be a few variations on the information in the runout. Mine's a yellow/white issue with just 65L-9290-1 in the runout and nothing else legible. Bootleg I assume. Bought it in the 70s, I think, but no idea how much.

Sent you a PM about Milton Grayson.
  16. Story from another mate, and he swears it's absolutely true. A woman came up to the stage, pointed to the record he was playing and asked, in all seriousness, if he'd got the b-side, she'd love to hear it. He said he was pretty sure he had it. Well, she asked, 'Will you play it for me if you can find it?' The intricacies of technology are indeed lost on some .
  17. Comment to me at end of set: 'I only knew two records you played'. My reply: 'You should get out more.' The guy's wife nearly pissed herself! Comment to a mate of mine at end of set:'I only knew two records you played'. Mate's reply: 'Right, they're going in the bin, can't have blokes like you recognising my records!'
  18. Was at a rare and underplayed night once when I noticed three people I know quite well, who go to many. many soul nights, looking decidedly glum. What's up? I asked. Don't know a single record. This is 'Caught You In A Lie', 'Robert Parker'. Never heard of him. Did 'Barefootin''. Never heard of it. End of conversation.
  19. ???? I'm looking for one, not selling.
  20. NOW SORTED THANKS!!!! Hi All, Looking for an Atlantic original of this. If anyone can help, please send PM with condition and asking price. Thanks John
  21. Hi all, Looking for an ORIGINAL of this R&B belter. If you can help, please send PM with condition and asking price. Thanks John
  22. Can't say that I have. Been after one for a while, but it seems a bit ellusive. I know JM has one, but I think that's a bit high.
  23. Hi all, Wanting an original copy of the above. Must be in decent condition, though not necessarily near mint. Looking to pay around £250. Please send a PM. Thanks for looking John
  24. This is what occured to me a long time ago - what is the difference between playing a boot or an mp3? I see many fliers stating that the music at some event is on '100% vinyl'. For me there is one word missing - 'original'. I agree it's everyone to there own, and I wouldn't slag off, or even refuse to visit, a venue where I know boots are played, but I don't see why CDs or mp3s would be banned at such places. I believe there are occasions when there is no alternative but to leave the vinyl at home. Normally I only play OV, and at a bona fide soul do that is absolutely the case, but I also play fairly handbaggy nights in pubs that may last for 4 hours or more. I can't cover all the requests I'll get with any sort of vinyl, original or otherwise, so I take my laptop. The punters know what's going on and don't mind, so long as I can play pretty much anything they might ask for. If the punters are happy, the pub is happy. Strictly, I may be denying my own stated position on OV, but sometimes circumstances dictate a more pragmatic approach.
