Pre-order from November 5th at https://5767.co.uk/shop/ Back Cover Text Whether your first experience of Northern Soul was trying to backdrop to a scratchy cassette at the youth club or nodding to the beat and trying not to stare at the spinners and swallow-divers in a regional ballroom in the wee hours, you'll probably be asking yourself (like me and Marvin) -what's going on? Who are these people on the web, peddling this insipid travesty of what has been our passion for decades? How did the scene become the preserve of pretty young things? And what the hell can I do about it? In this book, Paul Sadot exposes the social media interpretation of Northern Soul for what it is - theft. A heist of perhaps the most underground movement in British popular culture. Drawing on 40 years' experience as a dancer, record collector and DJ in the soul scene, Sadot interrogates the influencers and calls out the 21st century custodians of a culture which they have cheapened and faked for personal gain. Honest, incisive and entertaining, Insta(nt) Soul hits back at the tide of blandness that has stultified the scene and packed it in a pretty parcel of cosy nostalgia for smartphone surfers. A new album release from Ace Records, 'Two decades of the high priestess of soul's career on singles, with the emphasis on 'soul'.' Nina Simone - Let It All Out - Selected Singles 1961-1978 - XXQLP2 163 / CDTOP 1673 Available now via cd and double lp format, tracks and more below Release Notes ‘Icon’ is an overused word when it comes to describing singers and musicians, but when it comes to Nina Simone there are few artists that the word describes more accurately. The ‘High Priestess Of Soul’ is surely one of the most iconic singers of the 20th century, and one whose fame and acclaim stretches far beyond conventional black American music circles. Nina Simone has featured on Ace and Kent CDs before but this is the first time she’s had one all to herself. “Let It All Out” is the first and only Nina Simone collection to draw repertoire from every label she recorded for between the late 1950s to the late 1970s. Soul Voices - Soul with a Message 1960–1980 Now available to order A richly illustrated book exploring how soul music became a powerful voice for justice, identity, and spirit in Black America. It dives into an era when music was more than entertainment — it was a way of speaking truth, building community, and expressing resistance. Featuring over 300 different artists and 345 songs, Soul Voices connects lyrics, context, and culture — showing how each track is part of a bigger story of hope, struggle and joy. Individually and collectively, they offer a powerful window into African American life during some of the most transformative decades of the 20th century. While a few well-known names appear, the heart of the book lies with the lesser-known voices — rare and obscure 45s with powerful messages that still resonate today. This is an invitation to rediscover those voices. They deserve to be heard. First edition available now Comes with an exclusive 7” vinyl featuring two rare political soul tracks from 1973 Order here: https://www.soulvoicesbook.com/

A new 45 from Acid Jazz, latest in their ‘Mod Classics’ series on Countdown Records Release notes Continuing our sensational ‘Mod Classics’ series on Countdown Records, we present this essential Fleur De Lys 7”. In 1966, after two spectacular singles for Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate label, Fleur De Lys signed to Frank Fenter’s production company, Fenter-Rose. Fenter, as head of Atlantic Records UK office, allied the band with Atlantic’s distributor Polydor. Their Polydor debut was an astounding 45 led by ‘Mud In Your Eye’, which was backed by a cover of The Impressions ‘I’ve Been Trying’. The A-side is a coruscating Who-influenced breakbeat masterpiece that should be in everyone’s collection. The flip takes the Curtis Mayfield ballad at a funereal pace, adds an almost trip-hop beat and gives us one of very best cover versions of the original mod era. Acid Jazz and Countdown have been the home of the Fleur De Lys since 2010, and to celebrate our continued relationship, we are releasing this 300-copies, limited edition 7” on Countdown Mod Classics. Pressed on cool white vinyl, with monochrome labels and housebag. Released October 24, 2025 https://www.acidjazz.co.uk/product/fleur-de-lys-mud-in-your-eye/

A new mini exhibition at Ipswich County Library is showcasing five striking portrait photographs of soul music legend Geno Washington, taken by Suffolk-based photographer John Ferguson earlier this year. (USAF is the acronym for United States Air Force.) The display is part of the Black USAF: Cultural Connections in Cold War East Anglia project — a pioneering, Black-led heritage initiative uncovering the hidden cultural stories of African American US Air Force (USAF) personnel stationed in East Anglia from the 1950s to the 1990s. The photographs celebrate Geno Washington — a former USAF airman based at RAF Bentwaters — and his enduring connection to the region and its people. Washington’s energetic live shows and soulful charisma made him a household name during the 1960s, influencing generations of British musicians and fans. His career started in the pubs and clubs in Ipswich, illustrating the importance of Suffolk and the wider region to the country’s cultural landscape. Inspired by her own childhood experiences and stories from older family members, Black USAF is led by national award-winning engagement consultant and cultural producer, Elma Glasgow. The project also champions the importance of authentic storytelling of Global Majority cultures. Funded by Arts Council England through its National Lottery Project Grant programme, and the Essex Cultural Diversity Project. The project explores how African American airmen contributed to the cultural fabric of East Anglia, from music and nightlife to community relationships and local identity — stories that have remained largely undocumented until now. Elma says: “A heartfelt thanks to Suffolk Community Libraries for their Black History Month support, and to Geno Washington and John Ferguson. The exhibition highlights the powerful cultural exchange between the African American Air Force service people and local communities, a connection epitomised by Geno Washington’s story. This creative exchange deserves recognition as a reminder of our shared history and what unites us. “I’d also like to thank your funders, other partners, and of course the rest of the Black USAF project team for their hard work so far - we’re excited to share more stories in 2026!” The mini exhibition runs from 21 October to 17 November 2025 at Ipswich County Library, Northgate Street, Ipswich IP1 3DE. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.blackusaf.org or follow @projectblackusaf on Instagram and Facebook. Or email projectblackusaf@gmail.com. Link and QR code to Geno’s audio story:
Epsilon Record Co is pleased to introduce its latest release ICE CREAM. Ice Cream - With Love You'll Find Peace Of Mind - EPS035A EPSILON RECORD CO The two previously unissued tracks from 1978, recorded in Los Angeles, California, re-mastered by Steve Fuji. Steve Fuji and I have collaborated on several projects including Paris Ford, The Kopestetics, Real Side, Taxie, Kenyatta, Henderson & Jones, Natural Impulse, Ray Williams & Prime Cut. He is a valued member of Epsilon Record Co and we are grateful for his assistance and expertise. Several years ago Steve informed me that he had a master tape from a recording session he conducted in 1978 (he believes it was at Mystic Studio) from one of the original members and co-founders of Taxie, Charles Erwin Williams II, also known as ‘Ice Cream’. The tape was in good condition and the original version of With Love You’ll Find A Peace Of Mind was 7 minutes 38 seconds. I asked Steve if it was possible to shorten it to approximately 3 minutes. A few days later I received several versions re-mastered and re-mixed by him and we both agreed they sounded excellent. We hope you will enjoy this as much as we do. It is a fantastic piece of unheard Californian soul music available exclusively on Epsilon Record Co. The B side Seaside Vibe is a killer funky instrumental with an amazing production. SPRING RECORDS STORY: One of the major soul labels of the 1970s, Spring Records was formed in the late 1960s by Bill Spitalsky and Roy and Julie Rifkind. A hothouse label for some of the most essential soul music of the era, Millie Jackson, Joe Simon and The Fatback Band made their best-known songs and greatest chart hits for Spring. Tracks include Fatback's '(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop', Joe Simon's powerful, Gamble & Huff-penned 'Drowning In The Sea Of Love' and Millie Jackson's scorchingly confessional 'If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Wanna Be Right)'. Spring (with its subsidiaries Posse and Event) not only produced the big 1970s soul hits, they also gave us the minor hits and little gems that make soul music so interesting and rewarding.

The follow up to the 2011 Al Abrams book 'Hype & Sou!: Behind the Scenes At Motown' was published recently. Titled 'High on Sou!: Tell Me it's Just a Rumor, Berry', this time around the focus is on Al Abrams' experience, starting from his teenage years in 1959 when he was hired at Motown, to his role as Motown's Press Officer. Already picking up good reviews, release notes follows below Release notes High on Sou!: Tell Me it's Just a Rumor, Berry Al Abrams was Detroit Motown Family Grit; Not Hollywood Motown Family Glitz! Written before his untimely death, Motown Press officer, Al Abrams, tells the hard and painful truth behind his time at Motown. He tells of a medal of valor that a guy awarded to himself who had fabricated the military story for his own personal hero press. Al, also, reveals in detail why his Motown Memoir was not released after leaving Motown. This book is Al’s follow-up book to his Hype & Sou!: Behind the Scenes At Motown. It tells more Motown music history from Al’s 1959 Teenage Boy hire perspective to his becoming Motown’s Man as Motown’s Press Officer. As Motown’s Press Officer, Al had the ultimate view of where the Motown music secrets were hidden for both the record label and its artists. Al Abrams became Motown’s first employee at the age of eighteen years old. He impressed Berry and Raynoma when he took a record Berry handed him and got it played on the radio. Al became Motown’s only Go-To-Guy when he became Motown’s innovative, courageous, caring, daring and effective International Press Officer. He was privy to all the Motown family secrets from behind stage doors. He had to know everything from the inside to the outside to protect Motown, Berry and all the Motown artists and workers. As the Civil Rights Movement marched across America and young boys were putting on military uniforms and being sent to the Vietnam War, Al, single-handedly, created a global publicity campaign for a Black owned record label. Selling a Black owned music company’s records and promoting its artists was challenging. Al maneuvered around the color obstacles and the white owned entertainment venues, radio stations and publications to help Motown crossover the white-black demarcation music lines. Integration and not Segregation on the dance floor and in concert halls is the pathway Al created for Motown Al believed in the motto he created to sell Motown … Motown: The Sound of Young America. His book tells the miracle of Motown from his personal perspective and his insider knowledge that began for him as a teenager. Al Abrams, a music press legend, tells it from HYPE AND SOU! To HIGH ON SOU!

2 New Releases from Soul City label ,via Charly Records.
Kenny Smith - Lord What’s Happening To Your People / Lord What’s Happened -Soul City SC2503 Robert Thomas -Salvation / Cresa Watson - Salvation - Soul City SC2504 Two excellent new releases on the recently revived and iconic Soul City logo ,with both versions of two classic Rare Soul songs on each disc .Firstly we have the still socially relevant “ Lord What’s Happening To Your People “ by Kenny Smith on GAR Records ,a massive sound on the scene in the early 70’s ,plus the earlier 1971 Goldspot take on the flip .The Goldspot version is shorter and the bass etc is more noticeable. In my experience, this version seems more popular on the scene lately . Robert Thomas - Salvation was a popular sound from Major Bill Smith’s Charay label in the mid 70’s ,a great label out of Texas ,with many fine releases .The very rare Cresa Watson femme version has always remained an extremely rare 45 ,though was issued under the artist title of Rita Lee in the mid 70’s .Both versions are excellent ,and very popular dance floor favourites currently .Both records are available from Charly Records . https://charlydirect.com/

Release notes Here to dazzle you by the power of the disco ball, Lack of Afro is your friendly neighbourhood ‘Love Dealer’. Two years on from the funk & soul rebirth of ‘Square One’, powered by the ubiquitous ‘Loving Arms’ featuring Greg Blackman, Lack of Afro aka Adam Gibbons is now close to two decades deep in the game with soundtrack credits galore and online streams doing calculator-busting numbers.
With extensive touring taking ‘Love Dealer’ up and down the country this Autumn, Gibbons’ ninth studio album is all for "the thrill of seeing people on a dancefloor, all collectively locked into a track that you've produced - there’s nothing like it!”.
‘Love Dealer’ is the authentic modern disco experience, packing a stacked sole’s worth of club beats full of stardusted sing-alongs, style-outs and French touch-style cool. Despite being “written during one of the longest winters in living memory”, ‘Love Dealer’, featuring some co-production from fellow South Coast dancefloor scholar Flevans (and influenced by producer du jour Barry Can’t Swim), exudes warmth and will make you sweat when its highs take effect.

Details just in of a upcoming LRK Records album release, release notes below... Burgos and Page's sophomore album, A Long Short Story, is a conceptual journey through the rise and fall of a fleeting yet profound love, one that blossomed, thrived, and withered within the span of four seasons. Each track unfolds like a page torn from Johnny's mind, capturing every stage of the relationship's evolution in raw, chronological detail. From the euphoric highs of newfound passion to the crushing weight of unreciprocated love and the bittersweet process of healing, A Long Short Story weaves a sonic tapestry of grand emotions, immersing listeners in the beauty, pain, and impermanence of love.
