Phew, that was a hot one. last friday Soul Sam/excessive heat/non stop dancing an amazing set spanning many elements of Northern as only Sam can.

Cheers also to Steve from Aberdeen with his mellow crossover, just what we needed early on as we tried to keep cool.Joe returned to his 6ts and with Mitch&Pip they built things up well.

Thanks to a great crowd, you danced to everything Sam&the guys threw at ya. Taking us from 6ts thru to modern soul. A fantastic vibe all night,
Repositioning some of the tables helped to bring the dancefloor to the bar area methinks.

A definite "I was there moment"

Next month we get a visit from Manchester guys Chris Morgan and Budgie a resident at the Greatstone. Again expect things to start of 6ts based but feel sure some crossover be making an appearance.

Rhyl Town Hall Tonight Cancelled

North Wales Soul Clan's Northern soul night @ Rhyl Townhall has had to be cancled due to the local council pulling the plug,

because it did not want to be open after 12
and so yet again another good venue gets lost to us, because our elected local councils dont want to support our efforts to keep soul alive in north Wales, but we will "keep the faith" and keep looking for another venue.

Kenny Thomas - Crazy World - Album Released July 2006

KENNY THOMAS
CRAZY WORLD
Release Date: 17th July

In response to demand created by his fans rather than some marketing departments sleight of hand, Kenny Thomas is set to release his new album 'Crazy World' in July. Kenny's new album was seized upon by soul cognoscenti in the media and spread like a bush fire through England's ever-vibrant northern soul club scene.

Soul music inspires more snobbery than almost any other genre, but Crazy World strikes one for homegrown British talent, with a soulful sway to rival Alexander O'Neil at his best. Hot on the heels of the single, Thomas will issue Crazy World, the long-awaited album that will confirm his credentials with longtime supporters and new appreciators beyond any argument.

Crazy World features mainly co-writes by Kenny, who's collaborated with such acclaimed talents as prolific hit maker Eliot Kenedy, South African-born writer-artist Jonathan Butler and producer Simon Law, whose credits include Soul II Soul and ChantÃÆ’© Moore. Among them is the much talked-about Let It Rain and the in-demand Him, co-written by Thomas and Butler and effusively embraced among the online community of Britsoul devotees as possibly one of the best UK soul tracks ever made.

The collection proudly wears Thomas' love of the very best classic American soul, funk and fusion on its sleeve, but never as mere imitation and always with his own character as a writer and vocalist to the fore. This album is old and new, he says, and there's always a risk when you're either trying to please someone else or be self-indulgent, because both can miss the mark.

Also on the album are two imaginative covers to remind us that Kenny was always an outstanding interpreter too, all the way back to signature hits such as Outstanding and Tender Love. Opening the set is I Will, an ingenious reshaping of Icelandic jazz-funk outfit Mezzofortes top 20 pop crossover instrumental of 1983, Garden Party. Then there's a great reading of Don't Know Why, well known as a Norah Jones hit but now made entirely his own by Thomas, who takes possession of the Jesse Harris composition with a sophisticated update.

Kenny Thomas will be available for interview for further information please call Louise Molloy-Harris at Quite Great Publicity on 01223 410000 or email louise@quitegreat.co.uk

Alfreton Northern Soul Reunion

Any one that went to this great Northern Soul Reunion would know that the night down well with over 400 soulies. The sounds coming from the decks was totally out of the past with Dj's (Melton Mafia) Steve Tuck&Oggie taking the first spot to warm us up, then Graham Weaver from The Fez filled the floor with none stop 100% Northern Soul Oldies sounds. At 10 the organizer Ian Marriott with his good friend Glyn Williams took the dancing level to what it was like in the good old days at Alfreton. Terry Davies kept it rolling finishing the night with Rob Smith he also kept the floor going till the lights came on at 1.00 with the atmosphere that you could cut sweat that pored and the booze that flows this night is one night to be remembered
Thanks to Ian&Pat Marriott and all those that participated

Solomon Burke appearing in Cambridge This Friday 21st July

From the Cambridge Evening News
see end for link to full article

A TRUE music legend comes to Cambridge tomorrow (Friday, 21 July) when soul veteran Solomon Burke stops off as part of his latest UK tour.

The voice behind hits like Everybody Needs Somebody to Loveand Cry to Mewill perform as part of the Cambridge Fringe Festival at the Fringe Festival Gardens, near Great Abington.

He started down the musical path when he was a preacher in a gospel church in Philadelphia before going on to present a gospel radio show. In the sixties he started recording soul music but he never turned his back on his gospel roots, and remains deeply religious to this day.

He was snapped up by Atlantic and became known in the UK on the back of the Northern Soul boom of the seventies. He returned to prominence with the release of the aptly titled Don't Give Up on Mein 2002, featuring songs written for him by the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Van Morrison.

In the UK his career was also given a lease of life when he struck up a friendship with Jools Holland and went out on tour with him.

"I'm back in the saddle again and it feels wonderful," he tells scene. "I'm very blessed to be able to be performing with so many great artists....

The Rhythm&Soul Set reunion occurs this Saturday, those who regonise the name will know what to expect, those who may be scratching their head saying "mmm.. sounds sort of familar whats it about" may be expecting me to quickly throw in a glowing and interesting paragraph on how its a reunion (not a revival) of a series of events held in the early 90s by Mace and Rob Messer...

However if you were expecting that you're out of luck as was scratching me head myself!
Best bet is to steer you to a link to the uppers website where Richard KarstrÃÆ’¶m it says a few more words on the event
http://www.uppers.org/showArticle.asp?article=767
and also a lookback at style and origins of the RSS set in the early 90s by Jamie Rave
http://www.uppers.org/showArticle.asp?article=218

looks and sounds like a great cd has been put together for this event and while plans were to put up clips, as the music often tells the story better, they will now follow in just a bit

for now here's the cd track listing , more to follow and the flyer below

Caledoniasoul Hangs Up Dancing Shoes Sat 22 July

One of the UK’s most popular soul music clubs is calling it a day this weekend after five years of bringing the country’s top northern soul DJs to Glasgow.

Caledoniasoul, at the Woodside Social Club this Saturday night (22 July), has introduced a generation to the mysterious world of Northern Soul with intricate dance steps and impossibly rare vinyl from the 1960s and 70s. The mixed crowd of celebrities, pop stars and soul fanatics, regularly topped 200 over the years while maintaining an underground feel through minimal publicity. The venue’s notoriously sweaty atmosphere is almost as famous as the music and Saturday’s finale promises to be no exception.

Co-promoter and resident DJ, Scotch Martin, says: “This has been a fantastic club with a really mixed crowd of soul fans and people who are just curious. The 1970s Northern Soul scene was massive, and the precursor to Rave culture, but it’s been written out of 70s history in favour of Abba and Punk. Cale’soul was our way of demonstrating that this great music, based on the Motown sound, will never lose its relevance, even 30 years on.

Thanks to everyone who enjoyed Caledoniasoul over the years, and thanks to Caroline, Keith, Lenny and Cathy for making it all run smoothly.” The special guest DJ for the final night is London’s Ady Lupton, a Mod fashion icon. :-)

Martin has moved to London. In Glasgow, Goodfoot, Friday Street and Divine (Art School) will continue to champion to sound of vintage soul in Glasgow. Ends “Keep the Faith”

1) For more information please contact Martin Gavin on 07887 633437 or info@caledoniasoul.co.uk

2) Admission is £5.00, no admission after 1.00am

3) Woodside is no smoking in line with legislation 4) Event runs from 9:00pm until 2.00am 5) Woodside Social Club is at 329 North Woodside Road, Glasgow (Kelvinbridge Subway station)

WHITBY WEEKENDER 2006

As co-promoter of this wonderful event, I, together with my partner Bill Snow were looking forward to another special weekend.
The tickets were Sold Out apart from a handful left at the local Tourist office.

Imagine our horror when at 11pm Friday night, we observed a well known character selling counterfeit tickets.

Apparently he had been retailing them for quite some time with no one coming forward to report his behaviour.
The upshot being a security issue resulting in more than 100 being locked out for 90 minutes from 10.30pm. The police arrested him and took him into custody.

The event was superb on Friday, Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening too until the 'roadblock'.

To summarise exactly what happened, though we are still waiting for a full Police and Security summary;

10.30pm Security reported that in their opinion, 1,500 were in the building. As promoters we must adhere to their expertise, although it did look slightly lower than Friday.

11.30 Tensions rose dramatically outside the building as genuine fans could not be admitted at this time. Police were called.
11.35 Bill Snow went outside to talk to fans, while I convinced Police to allow me to make an announcement asking if 60 volunteers would be kind enough to leave early allowing the disgruntled fans back into the venue.
The Police agreed and nearly 80 polite and courteous Soul fans vacated the building allowing others in. They were admitted between 12 midnight and 12.30am.

The tension calmed, the bars which temporarily closed, re-opened and the evening got back on track.

Sunday was a roaring success. I personally spent all Sunday morning and afternoon speaking with non-agressive customers, answering their concerns.

WHITBY 2007
If we decide we want to promote the 5th Soul Weekender at this delightful location, both promoters have agreed to LOWER the capacity even though we are not obliged to.
Tickets will not be on sale. We are implementing a new Security device to allow Soul fans entrance without fear of 'counterfeiters' and other criminal acts.

Unfortunately at least 15% of this year's crowd will be unable to purchase tickets for July 6-8, 07 due to the new lower limit of availability.

Any questions regarding the event can contact us at sales@goldsoul.co.uk

Info on forth coming Wellingborough Embankment nights

Dear Soulies,
Just an update on The Embankment Soul Nights.
As you know the management has changed and they have spruced the old place up nicely. There is one requirement they ask and that is that we don't use any talc on the dance floor. The Embankment dance floor is highly polished and talc is not needed.
The reason I am mentioning this is that after the last soul night a lady slipped and broke her wrist. The Health and Safety came down and although in my opinion it was just an accident they said it was due to talc residue. So if there is any more talc used the management said they would have to stop us using the club. So PLEASE respect their wishes on this. Thanks.
Anyway looking forward, we have the next soul night on Friday 22nd September 2006 DJ's on this night are Roger Banks, Andy Pollard, Molly and myself.
Friday 8th December 2006 - Cliff Steel, Nicola Anderson, Russ Holley and myself.
Friday 6th April 2007 is our 13th Anniversary with a great 'Wellingborough Soul Club' 29 Track rare Soul C.D as the Anniversary gift to first 200 through the door. DJ's on this night are John Buck (R.S.G), Roger Banks, Dave Vanner and myself . This is 'Gonna be a packer!'
This night may be the last one as in my opinion to run a soul night you need to be 'Out There' Soulin' and due to family commitments and a 'change in life style!' etc I'm not. But we'll see aye?
Anyway thanks in advance for leaving your talc at home!
All the best,
Len.
Ps - Apologies to anyone who were offended by me saying 'RnB' Stinks' on the last posters. It doesn't stink...It's just cr*p!!! Tee Hee...

JIMMY JAMES & THE VAGABONDS LIVE SHOW IN BLACKPOOL

Now Is The Time ...to Get On Down&Boogie
At The Merrie England

Soul supremo Jimmy James&his 60's super group The Vagabonds are going to be stomping into the sunset on Blackpools legendary Merrie England Bar, on North Pier, this Saturday night, July 8th.
The popular live entertainment venue is hosting a series of free Live Music events on Saturday nights this summer including Clem Curtis&The Foundations on Saturday August 19th.
Hailed as The High Priest of Soul - Jimmy James&The Vagabonds are the ultimate 60s live soul act - their reputation built on a storming residency at London's famous Marquee Club.
One of the legends of British soul, Jimmy James and his band The Vagabonds, were rivalled only by Geno Washington's Ram Jam Band as a live club attraction in the 60s.
The band built a happy-go-lucky sound on fast disco dance floor fillers and soul ballads hitting the UK Top Ten with a succession of sensational soul classics such as a rendition of Neil Diamond's 'Red Red Wine', the classic dance floor anthem 'Now Is The Time', and one of the best disco-pop records of all time - 'I'll Go Where The Music Takes Me'.
The big man stands alongside Otis Reading, Sam Cooke and Wilson Pickett as one of the all-time R 'n' B greats.
Jimmy went on to join Biddu Records, recording 'I'll Go' and You Don't Stand A Chance (If You Can't Dance) which is still sounding wonderful.
Further releasing one of the best-titled singles ever 'If You Think This Funk Is Junk, You're Drunk'. (The other side of that, incidentally, was 'Let's Go Disco', which The Real Thing also recorded with Biddu.)
Nowadays Jimmy is still shaking dance floors across the UK with a Live show that is jam-packed with poptastic disco crowd-pleasers. Jimmy James's phenomenally successful full on party crowd-pleasing set will have soul&disco lovers dancing all over North Pier this weekend.

The dynamic funky pop duo ITCHY&SCRATCHY will warm up the crowds early doors with live music to get the party started.

Joey Blower will be hosting the special Live @ The Merrie England Nights with a full, fun packed evening of his hilarious comedy antics and formidable style followed an exclusive LIVE performance by Jimmy James&The Vagabonds.

The entertainment continues after the show with Resident DJ Johnny Vee spinning classic soul&disco sounds to keep the crowds buzzing in the party spirit.

Joey Blower recently saw Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, at a Soul Weekender in the Star Light Rooms in Lincolnshire and was completely awestruck:

"Musically Jimmy James&The Vagabonds are everything you would expect of a serious soul band, solid, tight with a driving bass and sparkling brass section and from the moment Jimmy James stepped on to the stage the audience was his.

And the man himself - after 40 years in the business, he still has the energy and drive of a 20 year old. From his opening 'That's Where the Music Takes Me' to his closing number, 'Now is the Time to Say Goodbye', Jimmy took the audience on a musical motorway of memories of 60's and 70's Soul. His imaginative sing along's and crowd interaction got the crowds up singing, dancing&clapping for more.

The dance floor was heaving as the crowd surged towards the stage, and there they stayed for a night of non-stop brilliance! With these guys, this joint can't fail to jump!

It's going to be a very special live music night&we're going to have lot's of fun on stage, great classic soul&disco sounds and we want everyone in Blackpool&all over the North West to get grooving this weekend!"

Jimmy James is looking forward to his visit to Blackpool saying why he thought that Blackpool was the one of the best places to perform:
"The Merrie England is the ideal venue for soul music because of the fun people that go there. Just like soul music, it appeals to so many across the generations&Joey is legendary for getting to know all his customers&reaching out through his comedy&music.

"Soul is a one to one type of music, we try to get people involved. It's a party, I'm just the host for the party for the night. That's the thing about soul music; it involves you. You listen to it.
You feel it. You can't help but feel good&get up and dance to it. I want everyone to walk out the gig singing.
Blackpool is world famous for it's lively party vibe&unrivalled feel good atmosphere so I am truly excited at being here.
Blackpool is soul music heaven!."

· Admission is Free.

· The Merrie England is located at the front of North Pier&doors open from 7.00pm

· Funky Pop duo Itchy&Scratchy LIVE on stage from 8.00pm

· Joey Blower performing a special fun packed show prior to Jimmy James&The Vagabonds from 9.00pm

Hoping that 'Lookbacks' will become a rounded and well-informed view of events around the country... making it not only informative and entertaining... but also an insight into what a venue has to offer anyone thinking about attending for the first time... music policy etc.

Basically a place to post venue reports, in depth reviews, play lists, any thoughts and observations you may have about a night, was it easy to get to, how busy was it, what DJ stood out for you... that kind of thing.

BUT... must ask if posting to please keep it on topic and worthwhile...

If you enjoyed an event ... say so

If you didn't ... say why you didn't ... as long as it's constructive ... it's valid ... and (i'm hoping)... welcomed by the promoters!

Communication... as they say... is a beautiful thing... thumbsup.gif

check it out - busy already

Burslem Nighter Stoke 1st July

Just a quick mention about the all-nighter this Saturday 1st July at Queens Theatre in Burslem Stoke-on-Trent

This venue is being promoted by my old mate Alan Johnson from Stafford, many of you may remember him running the South Side Stafford (follow up to TOTW),Loughborough, Whitchurch etc. etc. in the mid to late 80's.

The venue has 2 rooms, oldies/60's downstairs and modern upstairs, once the refurbishments are complete there is a possibility of that increasing to 4.

There is a refreshing attitude towards musical policy, basically Alan wants you the public to talk to him, tell him what you want to hear, and who you want to dj, if there is any way to avcomodate those wishesat future nights then he will do his best to do so.

This second night sees the launch of the modern room upstairs, i have put a lot of time in asking Alan to have a room playing modern soul, garage jazz n funk, and i'm sure that a good turn out will justify his faith in me.

Just to answer the Question that has been raised i can honestly stake my(rather tarnished) reputationon telling you that Alan is the sole promoter with no affiliation to anyone else.

So try and get down on Sat. what a great way for the 'foot'y' fans to celebrate another England victory, or like me those who just want a great night out.

More Soulful Serenades - A review by Eddie Hubbard

This is the third various artists release from the ever growing, Coventry based, Hayley records logo, each one re- inforcing their reputation for discovering the finest un - released, rare and indemand Soul sides .This time however, label owner Rob Moss has really struck gold, in finally securing the release of both the legendary " I wonder why " and " Go back baby " sung by the mystical Sy Hightower, and only existing on a solitary Monarch acetate, discovered during the 80's, and both becoming top sounds on the ever growing modern / crossover scene of the early 90's, courtesy of Rod Dearlove . Both sides are ultra soulful, with Sy's" rough as sandpaper " vocals relating the lyrically superb, self penned song to fine effect, complimented by a lilting backing track .

Two re-makes of Detroit classics are included, firstly ex lead of The Platters, Sonny Turner, re- visits the group's " With this ring " classic, a real winning formula, as the contemporary arrangement retains the magic of the original, and compares favourably with the original waxing . Dathan Jones, produced by the Philly soulstess Cindy Scott, recorded a superb update of Stevie Wonders 1963 " Contract on love ", which has remained "in the can " until now, and as with the Sonny Turner side, is a refeshing uplifting version , both these recording's could find favour with both the modern and northern soul scenes .Also included on this CD is " Mysterious Desire " by Dathan, an excellent ballad that has become a favourite of mine with continued plays .

JJ Barnes is of course a legend of our music, his contribution to the CD are " The time has come " and " You're my lady now ", two sides recorded at the same sessions as his 1970 Magic Touch release " To an early grave ", both are the basic tracks, without the sweetening of strings etc, however both sides showcase JJ's superb vocal style to full effect, and are really worthy inclusions .

Tim Murray's " Thinking of you " was a popular side on the modern scene of the same time frame as the Sy Hightower tracks, here we have the original [ and better ] version by Detroit legend Melvin Davis, another superb side to add to his ever growing pedigree !!

Tim Carter's " Thank you Marvin " appeared for the first time on the initial Hayley CD release " Soulful Serenades ", surely one of the best Marvin Gaye tributes to ever gain release, here we have another wonderful track " Dream of a lifetime ", mid tempo magic, and very uplifting .

Sharon McMahon is only known to myself via her rare " Got to find another guy " for Ollie McLaughlin's Karen logo out of Detroit, and her writing contribution for a number of Deon Jackson sides amongst others . Included on this silver platter is the beautiful " Get out of my life " a wonderful Bobby Martin and Toxey French production, with Ms. McMahon excelling on this so soulful ballad .

Jerome Jackson is another completely unknown artist to myself, however the inclusion of " I never believed in love " [ penned by the legendary Van McCoy ] has me searching for more material by this talent, a superb example of 70's " sweet soul " at it's best .

As we go to press the long awaited appearance of Almeta Lattimore is expected at the second Northampton Luxury Weekender .Included here are three wonderfully soulful tracks by this former Aretha Franklin backing singer, the athemic and ever popular " These memories " [ released as a '45 by Hayley Records recently ], the duet with John Freeman " I need you " which has long been a favourite with collectors of Deep Soul, and to close the CD, the beautiful " La La ", recorded at the Stax studio in Memphis, under the supervision of Detroit legend George McGregor .It's Almeta's photo that adorns the cover of this very high quality CD, a very fitting tribute to a real Soul singer, who[ like many of the artists include on this CD ] has remained in the background for far too long . A highly recommended release .

Emmanuel Laskey RIP Sad loss of one of Detroit's finest

The below was posted in the forums by Rob Moss

Sad news just received that my friend Emmanuel has passed. One of the truly good guys and one hell of a voice. His Thelma recordings rank of some of the finest performances ever, as well as his other material for a variety of labels. His gentle manner and personal warmth will be long remembered and greatly missed.

Sad News Paul Walker RIP

Very sorry to have to report the sudden death of Paul Walker, better known to everyone as Crispie. Originally from Wolverhampton, well known in the Midlands and especially in the Devon / Cornwall areas where he lived for almost 20 years, Paul was found dead this morning by his father. Cause of death unknown but it's more than likely he had an epileptic fit.
He was only 45.
I realise many of you won't know him but he'd been a friend of mine for something like 31 years and I'm going to miss him.
