DMSC 28 Sep - Three monkeys....

DMSC Soul nite was on last nite at the Springfield Hotel A55 Third one in the series and the final sort of see how things are going one.

Well how did combination of a line up featuring likes of KEITH MONEY, ION and DAVE THORLEY, a well smart venue and monkey attitude go?
Well need to hit read more for my own view and will just say watch out soon for next years dates, more top quality line ups and some near future news

Third Monkey happened Nite looking back seems to have been a succesfull one. All feedback got on nite and so far was that all enjoyed it . Crowd: A fairly mixed crowd, a good "here to enjoy" feel was all over place Fair few regulars hardcore now and hats off to the long distance ones such as St Ives and also the Irish contigent who flew in and paid the door in Euros! Fair few new faces, some regonisable. Found out hotel has been advertising nite in its own leaflets and reckon had a couple coming in cause of that. Full marks to the girls who turned up in a white stretch limo for the nite though not as impressive as my 24 hour hire nissan micra but was very close Djs Main regs Andy R and Rob T were on sidelines due to a double booking so a few last minute signings and reckon we had a well a strong line up Main room Keith Money, Ion, Dave Thorley being the main striking force and they went for goal big style. Some great sets, and some great sounds. First guest up was Chico doing the "local" spot, went for a 70s feel as doing 60s later and did good things.

Andy Killick another local (Chester) dj/collector up next, weve been warning people off about him as knew what he was going to dish out and he certainly deserved that warning with some top dog sounds. Ion making a rare appearance up here next and carried on from last time caught him with quality set Dave Thorley again a name not often seen round these parts, stepped up and lashed out with some great sounds Scotlands Keith Money was last of the all-star guest line up, and ouch, so good it hurt, know that now has a well strong dmsc contigent to his fanclub. Great stuff. Last half hour was the "monkey till you drop" finish with as normal the "local" boy taking it on. Chico dug deep and come up with a half hour feel good mix of classics, quality and good to hear agains. No excuses Play lists hopefully will follow soonest,

Second room Bit of confusion about this sometimes, as heard it called in past the "modern" ? room, the "R&B" room amongst other things!! Loose 6ts "across the other side of street format", is what we are after delivering and we try and get a varied mix of djs, who offer a varied mix of 6ts soul and reckon certainly had that this time. Allready this room seems to have got a bit of rep after the last one, with even a "undercover" reporter present. Didnt go as planned really due to one dj late and one dj doing what asked not to- what can you do? Martin Thomson made long journey up from London and gave us some quality These Old Shoes Style for the last hour set, some great stuff, and gotta say big thanks to Martin for making the journey Pete Coulson - was lynch pin for room, did early bit, then finished the nite off with a top selection of uptempo R&B which had place jumping Brian Rae - Brian dug deep for some classy little heard vinyl spins to take us on a voyage of discovery Mark Morgan - Mark pushed out a popular set that went down well on floor

odds digital cameras were out and about thanks to Anne, so some visual shocks should be up soon biggest suprise of nite was when Nick Brown just turned up outta blue -double take time online - always good to meet online people, hat off to Scotty and wife from Carlisle, plus all usual suspects news - lea manor is coming back soon venue hotel seems have well busy turnover of staff, but gotta say not many if any of previous hiccups showed up, few minor tweaks with sound, normal barstaff confusion with hour long two for one drink promotion but everything else seemed to work good.

Was a fair few record sales doing the rounds, with some good buys to be had future - next one is a one-roomer with main guest being Andy Dyson and regs Rob Thomas with Carl Willingham standing in for Andy Rix whos on holiday. Plus Mark Speakman and Soul talks very own Steve T Plan is to cram everyone in, look door and see what state all are in after 5 and a half hours of rare soul mayhem. Nov 16 being the day. own view - ok as one of the team, my view is coming from a different angle that the "punter",all feedback got was all seemed to have well enjoyable time, after 3 events now have a great bunch of regs and supporters, and know that theres a fair few "revitalised" (word some used to explain it) people hungry for even more fresh sounds. So what seen and heard feedback all good. Thanks - gotta say many thanks to all the guest djs, a fair few did some well long journeys to show up, and am sure their efforts are appreciated by all as their sounds were. Know they enjoyed themselves and had a great time, which is what its all about. Thanks as always to those who helped with flyers, spreading the word, supporting us and and more. Thanks to main sound crew Lawrence and arabians And Pete Coulson for 2nd room gear plus his roadies ....his family Thanks to DMSC door crew team Sue, Julie and Dave And of course thanks to all DMSC members, the ones who put the monkey in it DMSC ps we thrive on feed back and ears always open , so lets us know any thoughts, views, criticisms etc etc on nite always scrounging stuff for site if wanna do a review , shoot away either email dmsc@soul-source.net website - www.soul-source.co.uk should be updated soonest, if want to see video clips - give Dick John a kick when see him next.

Standing In The Shadows Of Motown

Lp out now, the film due out in US on Nov 15.
A fair few websites, clips, trailers, audio etc etc all up and out there.
save you hunting around here's some decent links and a few words from intro of film
The official website
http://www.standingintheshadowsofmotown.com/
Film intro:
In 1959, Berry Gordy gathered the best musicians from Detroit's thriving jazz and blues scene to begin cutting songs for his new record company. Over a fourteen year period, they were the heartbeat on "My Girl," "Bernadette," I Was Made to Love Her," and every other hit from Motown's Detroit era.
By the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number one's hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - which makes them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They called themselves the Funk Brothers.
Forty-one years after ................

Track Listing: Starring The Funk Brothers on all tracks
1 -(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave - Joan Osborne
2 -You've Really Got A Hold On Me - Meshell Ndegeocello
3 -Do You Love Me - Bootsy Collins
4 -Bernadette (instrumental) - The Funk Brothers *
5 -Reach Out I'll Be There - Gerald Levert
6 -Ain't Too Proud To Beg - Ben Harper
7 -Shotgun - Gerald Levert featuring Tom Scott
8 -What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted - Joan Osborne
9 -I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Ben Harper
10 -You Keep Me Hanging On (instrumental) - The Funk Brothers *
11 -Cool Jerk - Bootsy Collins
12 -Cloud Nine - Meshell Ndegeocello
13 -What's Going On - Chaka Kahn
14 -Band Introduction / Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Chaka Kahn&Montell Jordan
15 -The Flick - Earl Van Dyke *they played their first note an a Motown record and three decades since they were all together, the Funk Brothers reunited back in Detroit to play their music and tell their unforgettable story in STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN.
With the tumultuous sixties as a backdrop, Motowns unsung heroes take the viewer on a compelling journey in time as they trace the evolution of The Motown Sound" from its origins in Detroit to its demise in Los Angeles during the seventies. Through the eyes of the riveting characters who ruled Hitsvilles studio by day and the club scene of Detroit by night, we enter a world of unparalleled soul and emotion as the Funk Brothers revisit the sites of their musical roots, triumphs, and eventual heartbreak.
For more than four decades, from the dance floors of the world, to the Detroit riots of 1967, to the war in Vietnam, the music the Funk Brothers created has played a major role in the cultural fabric of all of our lives. STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN finally puts some faces on that music and introduces these heroic musical figures to the world.
"There are suckers out there for the films brand of shrink-wrapped nostalgia. Im not one of them."

Keele Back with a good one - T

Busy weekend after Runcorn and Wilton, it was off to Broughton and then Keele Niter last nite Got there about 1.30 Been told that earlier on wasnt much dancefloor action But from 2am caught 3 great sets by Irish Greg, Butch and Roger Banks Dancefloor packed, place had a good buzz Three hours worth of then oldies spot by Rob Jones which wasnt my cup of tea Keith Minshull finished nite with a good set. Doors open at 10 so missed 4 hours of the niter inc sets by Mick Smith, Dave Welding, though got to say the 3 hours 2-5 were great stuff.

Overall ...from what I saw Well what an improvement, when last year the event closed down, it was said that the event had run its course. And to tell the truth my experience there agreed with this. This one though was a completely different affair. Crowd was from all over UK Down South, London, Cambs, Yorkshire etc etc and of course many from North West and North Wales.

A lot of familar faces and a lot of catching up Place had a good buzz, Greg, Butch and Roger did great things and the crowd responded. Look forward to seeing future dates, regulars and line ups. Going by those 3 hours if go for same am sure this new version will be a winner. And will be another recent addition to the decent soul events list.

Broughton was a good one, main guest was Arthur Fenn with Mark Speakman doing the North Wales slot. The normal guest timings had changed so only caught a bit of Arthur Fenns spot. regulars Soul Sam and Brian Ellis pushed out what they are good at, a good quality mix of all era soul Version of Family affair by Misia ?? was a stand out.

Record Thief Alert

Posted on soul talk by a "concerned dealer" and passed on with permission as may be of interest to some WARNING!!! Whilst selling records at Keele last night I turned to talk to a mate and someone took 3 records out of my box and walked away with them. Fortunately I saw him out of the corner of my eye and challenged him, took all the records from him and recovered my STOLEN records, by the time I`d found the promoters the guy was nowhere to be seen. The strange thing was that he`d actually bought some records from me earlier although the value of the records he bought was £10, the ones he`d stolen £100! A brief description of the guy; mid 40s, yellow polo shirt covered in old patches and a beige Nike cap, keep a look out for him around the venues.

Travels and weekend Going Ons 21 Sep

Bit of travelling last nite,
hit read more for quick look back at Pavillions - Runcorn
And a long journey and a short visit of Wilton All Niter

Plus some odd bits of other news, gossip, etc mixed in

After a week of car and washing machine trouble, weekend was well anticipated.
As always North Wales confusion crept in as thought was going to south Manchester event, but turned out was off to Pavilions at Runcorn, which for some reason thought had already been on this month.
Steve T (Holyhead) was main guest and had a space so off we went with a shady north Wales crew Dick John, (if anyone wants to catch dmsc soul nite video online, when see him tell him "sort that video"), Chris and Dave F being rest of bunch.

Pavilions was still where it was last time, and still as smart inside. Venue well plush, and good layout and feel. A enjoyable venue. Those who dont know event its run by Bernie OBrien and Steve Fletcher, helping out was someone who had a fair bit of chinwag but didnt catch name, know youre online mate so apologies. Way have had event described to me in past, is this is a selfish thing for promoters, they do run another event where emphasis is on popular play what crowd want, which is mainly an oldies event. But this one is the balancer, the fun thing, a "let the djs do their own thing" and no policy. Dont like that "across the board" term as been misused a lot. Feel of nite to me was a classy mix of all era soul.

Bernie on decks at first then followed by Cogs (not that sure on name, may be wrong and guy on door was cogs??)
Heard some nice stuff , crowd was a bit down on last time was there, though werent that many early on, gotta say the early dancers were well impressive, rare nowadays to say that but well smart and stylish. Was a strong 70s+ feel overall, highlights included likes of the great jerry butler - dont step on my dreams and more similar style grooves, had mentally noted a lot more but gone west at moment. With the odd classic thrown in , Soul Self Satisfaction was dedicated to the late Martin Ellis.
Steve T was on next at 11 as the main guest, asked my advice earlier as I have guested here before, I told him the crowd was all into early R&B the earlier and the more down tempo the better. Of course he wisely ignored my advice and continued the set trend with a smart mix of 60s current plays, few classics and 70s+. Not a representive mix but some examples being - Pretty Little Girl Next Door - Bobby Day , Holland Dozier - New Breed Kinda Woman, Gayle Adams- Baby I need your loving. sure Steve will add when recover as didnt catch all.
Bernie finished of nite with bit more of a good mix of all era soul
Odds
Alan B wouldnt give out details of that other version of Vooddo Working apart from a few clues as it was actual legal issue not dub. Did say other stuff but gone west. Mentioned next weeks main guest at Viaduct is Ginger.
Overall, numbers down, but still an enjoyable nite, some great sounds on the 70-2k trip, some could have done with out, but "something for everyone and all that
Orig plan was just the one event but come 1am most of us had a strong desire to crack on, though Steve t had work in morning, such was our thirst we sweet talked steve t into just making a flying visit to wilton, suppose steve is more than likely cursing us right now at work. Yeah and we deserve it

Wilton

Enough is enough, someone tell me what is it about yorkshire, every time in last couple of months been there, have had a right bundle of laughs. This time no different, as was planned just to nip across for a few hours time was tight. So as wanted to get most was in a rush, first thing we found out that exit number we were given was wrong!! Which made the mobile phone directions we were trying to follow a bit hard. Cut the crap - think one hour 50 odd miles, another motorway exit, 3 security guards, a 24 hour garage, and 30 mins of Pete Coulson mobile phone credit, later we found the place
If someone wants to tell why does it seem that all events in yshire seem to be located in the middle of industrial estates feel free
Off topic: just worked out why Yorkshire Rider crew had probs finding DMSC, wasnt my tip top directions, it was fact that there was no industrial estate within 10 miles of it." That might be it " said our young soul fan "...nay lad dont be daft. Has thou seen all that green stuff around here, and wheres all security gates and wire fences, nay lad thou is wrong, keep thy foot down, now weres my snap box" - advance apoligies

By time got there, worked out what time had to leave as Steve T was at work in morning, mmmm we had one hour
A quick haggle on price with door staff , in, catch up with a fair few not often seen, not sure who was on when in but played some nice stuff, was told numbers were down, 2 cups of tea, Chris Sheppard then was on and Let It Be Real- George Hobson hit the spot, (seen this had spins at wigan 78, how did it go) Steve T pointing at his watch, a quick attempt to flyer every one in 2 mins, and that was it, a 2-3 hour journey ahead, and to make matters worse found out that a bloody security guard had given us long way directions, and when driving around were just 50m away from venue
Back home at 7

Final thing on wilton is was it worth it?
My own view yep, even though spent more time industrial estate touring than in actual event (check out the argos distribution depot for a superb example of the latest version of the highly rated secur-r-us gate barriers)
Event been trying to get to for a fair while but usually either clashes, or plans failing means no go. As said was told numbers were down, and dance floor reaction was a bit on/off , but even short time event there , place had that "feel" you associate with a good quality event . And as recently some events happenings have left me wondering "am I on different planet" well that hour cleared it all up .
Definitely be going again, a hour not really long enough for fair view suppose, but what saw, felt and all the rest despite numbers down, will undoubtely result in yet more battles with those bloody Yorkshire industrial estates.

WEEKEND OTHER GOING ONS

Plinston Hall Update

Hi all. Back again with all the latest news regarding North Herts biggest Rare Soul event - the Plinston Hall. Firstly the next night is Friday 1st November with guests Nick&Dawn Brown and Dave Rimmer joining the usual line-up of Hammie, Fingers, Taffy and TheBigO&Ab. Tickets are a MUST for those who intend travelling and can be reserved on the door or paid for by credit card from the box office on (01462) 480282. £5 gets you in to a guarenteed packed fun filled night. Please note: Our events are not, at present, members only so you CAN turn up on the night and pay at the door. We do not advise this if you are travelling to the event as the last one sold out in under 2hrs. All the opening night problems (too few bar staff, overcrowding, bar drunk dry etc etc) have now been sorted and we have opened the upstairs Modern/Crossover room for this night (6 months ahead of schedule) to cope with the demand. Top Modern DJs will be booked for the forthcoming events and please note NO SOULFUL GARAGE is envisaged!! We are talking with the management about the possability of holding allnighters at the venue and so far talks are encouraging. However, we want to build a strong database of members asap as this will be members only events. Drop us a line at nh6tsmafia@aol.com for further information. Thats it for now. January sees the lovely Ginger Taylor gracing the decks and we are hoping to secure the services of Soul Sam in the Modern room (TBC). Butch will also be making his debut at the club sometime in the new year and the R&B/R&S room will be opening in March 2003 so watch this space and find out why we say....Herts - Full of soul! The Power Rangers Of Northern Soul!

If haven't checked it out yet, can watch the famous northern soul patrol on web. Funniest thing on tv since that thing on breakfast tv that involved a pie in a bread roll.....

Both clips are up on BBC choice site - also linked in the new video player section (under testing but seems solid)
Heres what Johnny V says on site about them

"And Soul Patrol, they're back arent they? Yes! I just love Northern Soul. I always have done. The first time I saw it I knew I was observing a phenomenon. It was a kind of working-class dance movement, a forerunner to Rave. It was about you, your state of mind and a driving beat. It was a movement that passed by everyone in the South because the London music crowd never ventured North and there were no magazines then like The Face, or the internet to bring everyone in touch. This is another reason I see value in it. Where did you get the guys from? I can't reveal the source of them but we will be bringing out action figures. They're going to be the new Power Rangers, solving crime to the power of the beat. "

Link is: Hit this power ranger (long gone!) - updated with youtube video added

The Truth is out there....

Well seems were rumbled, some have commented on team monkeys frequent trips to caribbean and other suspicious things. Investigative reporter Nick Brown of Scenesville fame recently told the world via Soul Talk, the truth behind the DMSC nites and the legendary "Two drinks for one promotion"!! Thanks to him our grant from McGill University, Montreal, has now been suspended! And there is no longer a need to enter blood groups on memberships application forms. just hit that read more... to read more

Found this in the latest issue of Fortean Times and couldnt resist sharing it with you all. The article is a paraphrase of a report which appeared in the Sunday Telegraph of May 3, 2002, and appears in a feature collecting together items on this theme. Club promoters in the North Wales borderlands might particularly enjoy it! ******** A study that involved giving alcohol to 1000 green vervet monkeys has shown that small primates behave very much like humans. The vast majority drank moderately and only in the company of other monkeys (but never before lunch) and preferred their drink to be diluted with fruit juice. Around 15% drank regularly and heavily, preferring their hooch neat or with a dash of water. The same proportion drank a little or were teetotal. Five per cent were "seriously abusive binge drinkers". They get drunk, pick fights, and consume as much as they can before passing out. As with humans, most heavy drinkers are young males, but monkeys of both sexes and all ages like a drink. The research took place on the Caribbean island of St Kitts, where monkeys have developed a taste for alcohol in the form of fermenting sugar cane, and now frequent the islands bars to gulp back abandoned cocktails. The study involved keeping the animals in cages and offering them a choice between soft drinks, alcoholic drinks and diluted alcohol. "A cage full of drunken monkeys is like a cocktail party," said Professor Frank Ervin of McGill University, Montreal, who led the study. "You have one who gets aggressive, one who gets sexy, one who thinks everythings funny and one who gets really grumpy. The binge drinkers gulp down the alcohol and pass out on the floor. The next day they do it all over again." ***************

Plinston Hall first night

Can you please put this up on your site guys to ensure that people are made aware of truth and not some very doddgy rumours. Ta very much.

TheBigO

"WE'RE HAVING A FRIDAY NIGHT GET TOGETHER!"

Well the first night at the Plinston Hall in Letchworth has now been and gone and was, despite a few teething problems (see later), a blinding night with the venue SOLD OUT by 10.05pm!!!! The 400 strong crowd, who included many old faces from the past, were treated to current monsters, oldies and class modern/crossover anthems. If you've been to King George's in Blackburn or to Randys Southgate events then you'll have experienced a similar atmosphere and crowd! The atmosphere was great, the hall was fantastic according to all who got in and the mix and quality of sounds on offer, despite the fact that our 2 star DJ's couldn't show up, was excellent. A quick mention here to both Tony Warrot and Pete Hulatt who stepped in at short notice and played blinding sets. In short a fantastic opening night was the general consensus.

That said we were a victim of our own success and we did have a few opening night problems. First let me take this opportunity to clear one rumour up. The event was sold out (much to our surprise!) and there were people who had travelled from the North West and the Midlands who didn't have tickets reserved or paid for, but EVERYONE (including them) did get in It just took a little time and a lot of skill on the part of Kay Seabrook to ensure that all that wanted to be in, got in. NOT ONE person was sent home who travelled. We did have a problem with drink being split on the dance floor but that was dealt with as soon as we were informed and that will not be happening again as we have set things in motion on that front. This is the reason the floor was a bit sticky towards the middle of the night and, as a dancer myself, I now how frustrating that is! We do apologise for this and can only restate that it shouldn't occur again, and as a footnote the floor had been polished and was perfect at the start of the evening. The only other comment was that there were a lot of civilians in but again we'd point out that we did have around 10% locals in (with no trouble or hassle I might add) but the rest were all old school northern soulers who dropped out over the years. As membership increases we will be soon running 'members only' nights so that should ensure it will be 100% soulies in future.

The only thing to say now is with regards to forthcoming events on Nov. 1st and Jan. 10th is send for membership (with SAE) and BUY a ticket from the box office to ensure you will get in. I know others will be submitting reports of the night, or you can talk to Pete, Tony, Randy or Nick Brown for an honest appraisal, so I won't take up space here. In short great night and better to come.
