Cordial Recordings has been in touch with us again and have asked us here at Soul Source to pass on the latest news about their next forthcoming 45 release. They have lined up for release two previous unreleased 1970s tracks from Ruby & the Mudflaps. Details and a preview follow below and you can also take in a full interview with Mel Canady on all things Ruby and Mudflaps.  Plus news also out about a brand new lp out of this collaboration in the near future.
Cordial Recordings Blurb
Cordial Recordings are proud to release on 7" vinyl two previously unreleased songs by Ruby & The Mudflaps with 'Is That Enough?' and 'Country Girl' that were both originally recorded in the 1970s. Ruby & The Mudflaps are best known for their song 'Breezy' which was released in 1977 on Jupiter records and was recently re-released in 2017 by Cree Records. Mel Canady and Cordial Recordings are currently working together for a future album release based around the southern musical roots of Mel.

Interview with  Mel Canady:

Mel you’re originally from Alabama?

Yes deep south, Alabama.
What was your introduction to music?

Actually it was of course as it was with most artists from the area it was the church and there was a couple of guys who played instruments when I as 12 or 13. I was in a vocal quartet. One of the older guys would accompany us when we did gigs. It was basically the church and a couple of guys on the corner playing blues. The old cliché I actually experienced that.
At that point you didn’t play a musical instrument! That came later in life.

That came much later. I of course picked up every instrument that I saw, just to see what it felt like. I actually started playing an instrument seriously about 12 years ago because growing up we couldn’t afford to buy a piano or that kind of stuff. I was lucky enough to get to college and whilst I was there singing in the college choir I formed a quartet in my very first semester when I was 19 years old with piano. I met a lot of musicians then and I got a scholarship to study natural science, but I got hooked up in the jazz scene of Greenwich Village in New York. In 1970 I got drafted to the army and have since spent most of my entire adult life in Europe where I was able to connect with musicians right away. My natural love of music and being around guys who could play actually taught me. I didn’t really start with reading notes or writing music for musicians until much later. The whole process in terms of musical evolution took place in Europe, but like I’ve said before you don’t ever get too far from your roots. What I learned as a child with music has stayed with me and I keep up with it as I grow older.
Didn’t you go to the same University as Fred Wesley?

Fred Wesley was in the army at that time and he was playing with a group on campus, a fantastic group. In fact I talked to Fred about a year ago when he played Munich about those times. I think it was around the fifth semester and I was on summer break in Long Island, New York. Whilst I was there James Brown was performing at the Westbury Music Fair where Fred was playing with James Brown. He also became later the band leader and arranger with Maceo Parker, they were actually the power behind the JBs. We had fun talking about the old times.
You came to Europe in 1970! How long were you in the army for?
I was in the army for three years. I was one year in the United States and two years here. When I finished I remained in Europe. Things were going a different way for me.

What was the attraction to Europe for you?

Germany especially. For me Germany is a safe, clean, fair, non-violent progressive and modern country. I fell in love with the whole idea of being here. It’s just what I need to do what I wanted to do. I was able to learn a lot of stuff here. I learned a lot of stuff in different fields. I did other jobs when there wasn’t enough jobs for singers or if you liked going on tour or doing a musical so I took other jobs as a sales man for consumer electronics as an example. I did that on and off for 35 years. I did have record offers, but there’s a strange mentality with the music that I wanted to do, that I can do, that suits me if you will has nothing to do with the way that people see music here. Music has a completely different function and is motivated for reasons that I don’t find legitimate, but I’m living here so I can’t complain about it. At the same time I didn’t sell out, wear certain clothes or make myself look this way or that way. I don’t want to insult anybody but I have to stick by my guns with that one. If people want to have a blues singer then i’m the guy. I won’t do this modern pop commercial stuff, for me it’s boring.
Who were the first group that you joined or formed after you left the army?

The first real group that I put together after jamming for three or four years in one club with changing musicians so the band never really got together. I was doing that for a while. Then a guy named Mike Thatcher, god bless his soul, asked me if I’d be interested in joining a pop choir. That group was called Family Tree and we had eleven singers with seven musicians. It was a huge production. After that died down we started a new group because we were all inspired by Buddy Miles, Blood Sweat & Tears, Chicago, James Blood Ulmer and Earth, Wind & fire of course. We put together a kind of jazz rock band more in the sense of Blood, Sweat & Tears but with a black singer. We were brainstorming about the name of the band with finding the name that would fit the kind of music that we were doing and with the way that we were dressing on stage, etc. After about two hours and around 25,000 beers somebody said “why don’t we call ourselves Ruby & the Mudflaps!” That was so funny at the time, so atypical. The problem started when people called me Ruby!
You released one single in 1977 with ‘Do The Boogie.’ How did that come about?
It started out when I did a German cover of Carl Douglas’ ‘King Fu Fighting’ and then I had the idea to record the tunes that I had written which were ‘Breezy’ and ‘Country Girl.’ Those two songs were submitted to Ralph Siegel, but they decided to go with a song that was written by Keith Forsey, who later became billy Idol’s producer. He was also the drummer in my band for a while. Keith had a song called ‘Do The Boogie.’ The record company decided to put that as the A Side with ‘Breezy’ on the flip. That meant ‘Country Girl’ never officially got recorded. It’s been on ice since then. We played at least half of the repertoire with our own material. It was a mixture of pop, soul and jazz if you will. I hate names, for me it’s all rock and roll. In the course of putting together a programme for concerts we had to work in clubs, so we needed a longer repertoire just to survive financially. We had to play the clubs and in those clubs we had to play at least four sets. It was a cool gig if there was only three. In the course of putting that programme together we would sit in the rehearsal room and write our own songs. We eventually had around fifteen songs with ‘Is That Enough?’ was one of them. It was also very personal because I was in an unhappy relationship as it always is with the blues.

At the time the label thought that ‘Breezy’ was too soulful for the German market and so therefore didn’t take up a follow up single.
No they didn’t. We did one single as Ruby & The Mudflaps with Jupiter Records which was an associate label of Ariola at that particular time. We got requests, but the record didn’t sell very well at all. This is what I meant before about the German music and all that with I cannot expect them with an audience here to understand that kind of music because classical music dominates over here and classical music has a different feel. It’s about different things such as a lot more notes to be precisely and the emotional part usually gets cut short. Beside that at that particular time you had groups like Santana, Chicago Transit Authority. Blood Sweat & Tears and over a hundred horn groups. The record company was right that if they could only sell 3,000 copies over all of Germany with Earth, Wind & Fire there was no way we were going to top that with no matter how good we could play. They were the ones on the radio. The radio play I got was with German songs or pop stuff because I worked years later as a studio singer. I was in a group of six people and we’d go from studio to studio backing other artists. I must be on at least 50-60 albums.
Back in the 70’s you were also in Donna Summer’s first group! Is that correct?

We were in a couple of groups together where we toured live. I met Donna after she’d done a tour with Hair. We were all over the place doing gala concerts with a big band and we also worked in the studio together in ’75 or ’76. Donna had the hit ‘Love To Love You Baby’ that was produced here with all local musicians and then of course she left to go to Los Angeles. That was the end of that.
When did Ruby & The Mudflaps split up?

We split up after around 3 or 4 years because musicians kept leaving the band because it was very difficult to support a band that size. We were eleven people, with two guitarists, four horn players and all that. The girl that was singing with us called Lucy Neale decided that she wanted to go back to the States. She got a contract with a female vocal group that was very successful. So musicians kept leaving the group and I kept replacing them with other guys. There was probably over 50 guys that have played with the band in various formats. The spirit of the band was Michael Thatcher and when he left it wasn’t the same without him so we decided to change the name of the group to Royal Flush, Rock Candy and so on. They were basically the same format. My idea was always four rhythm, four vocalists and four horns. We were a very hip band and we played most of our own material. You know how it is it gets lost over the years. We were lucky that what we’re doing here is that Lucy still had all the old tapes. I’m in the process of trying to make contact with all the musicians that are living to invite them to Germany to perform once again with the band.
We met up in December last year in Munich and we agreed to work together on some new recordings. Are you enthused about working on a new set of songs?

I’m very very excited. I’m ahead of myself and I’ve got to slow down because I’m getting so excited about this project. I get up in the middle of the night and I write a set of lyrics. Then the next morning they suck! I’m very excited about this and especially about playing the songs live again.
You’re an accomplished songwriter!

I wouldn’t say accomplished. I would say that I keep trying. I received recently a small royalty statement from Gema over here for ‘Breezy.’
When did you first become aware of ‘Breezy’ becoming popular on the soul scene in Europe?

Around three years ago a guy from Frankfurt approached me to enquire about Ruby & the Mudflaps. They wanted to do a production but it never took place because we were too far away. They didn’t seem to have the right spirit or the right drive. That just kind of died out. I was surprised because I went on the internet and saw that somebody had uploaded ‘Breezy.’ I watched it every now and again. I thought that this is nice. Then I got another call from Merten at Cree Records about ‘Breezy.’ Then six weeks later you called. That’s when I thought that maybe something could happen. Just to think that I could leave something for my grandchildren is enough motivation for me.

Follow up single from Timmion records vocal duo Pratt & Moody is now out, and yep it's everything it should be.
Listen and read below...
Pratt & Moody (feat. Cold Diamond & Mink) - Words Words Words (Vocal) - Timmion
Title: Words Words Words (Vocal)
Artist: Pratt & Moody (feat. Cold Diamond & Mink)
Label: Timmion
Cat#: TR721
Formats: 7" Vinyl/Digital
Digital Release: 4th May 2018
Physical Release: 4th May 2018
A while back Pratt & Moody hit the global soul scene with their Stylart debut 7” ”Lost Lost Lost”, leaving many exclaiming the words ”FIRME ROLA” on its tracks. Some even mistook it for a forgotten oldie. Now this vocal/guitar duo gets together with Cold Diamond & Mink for another dose of grade A soul music.
Not breaking the spell of tautology started with the first 45, ”Words Words Words” picks up the tempo from ballad territory into the beat heavy group soul category. The pulsing drum track is laced with majestic horn riffs, tremolo guitar, penny arcade organ, and over everything hover the beautiful lyrics by Pratt and his mysterious harmony singers.
If the first single by Pratt and Moody left you yearning for more soul, this one should blow away the rest of your corporal existence.

New - Lack Of Afro - Back To The Day (feat Elliott Cole) out now.

Lack Of Afro has a new single out, details and preview follow below, with news of a new album on its way as well
'I'm delighted to say that my brand new single 'Back To The Day' (featuring Elliott Cole) is out NOW! Available on all streaming services & also on beautiful picture sleeve 7" vinyl with 'Take It Up A Notch' (featuring Wax & Herbal T) on the flip (ships mid-May)'
<a data-cke-saved-href="http://lackofafro.bandcamp.com/album/back-to-the-day" href="http://lackofafro.bandcamp.com/album/back-to-the-day">Back To The Day by Lack of Afro</a>
Multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Adam Gibbons (aka Lack of Afro) is back in some style with ‘Back To The Day’, a beautifully produced summer sizzler crammed full of infectious hooks, top musicianship and most importantly, vibe by the bucketload! Taking a nod from classic material by artists such as The Jackson 5, Earth Wind & Fire (and more recently Vulfpeck), ‘Back To The Day’ is Lack of Afro doing what he does best and then some – blending the old and new with big drums and heavy percussion to come up with a crossover classic that’s entirely his own, whilst all the while developing his abilities as a songwriter.
Providing a dynamite vocal once again is regular collaborator Elliott Cole. Not just the voice of the track, he also plays guitars and bass, whilst ably backed up by some stellar musicians including George Cooper (Haggis Horns) on keys, Rory Simmons (Blur, Jamie Cullum) on trumpet, string and horn arrangements and Harry Harding (Yola Carter) holding down the backbeat on drums.
Keeping the dancefloor packed and turning the party vibes right up to 11, ‘Take It Up A Notch’ (featuring the brilliant Wax & Herbal T and taken from the critically acclaimed ‘Back In Business EP’) completes what is arguably one of the strongest single packages of the year!
Lack of Afro continues to go from strength to strength. 2016’s ‘Hello Baby’ (released on his own label LOA Records) picked up a BBC 6 Music ‘Album Of The Year’ nomination & appeared in the Top 10 of the iTunes R&B / Soul chart in 21 countries worldwide. More recently, Adam’s music continues to be used across all aspects of film & TV by networks such as ABC, Fox, NBC, Sony Pictures & the BBC whilst he also has released music on Universal & Warner Brothers Records.
Both tracks are taken from the new album ‘Jack Of All Trades’, released on LOA Records in May 2018 and supported by a live band UK tour in May & throughout various festivals throughout the summer

Producer Martyn Ware Seeks Memories of Tony’s Ballroom

Dancing the night away – Memories, mementoes and music from Tony’s Empress Ballroom, Blackburn sought by musician and producer Martyn Ware for Art in Manufacturing
Throughout the eighties and into the nineties Tony’s Empress Ballroom, Blackburn was a cornerstone of the Northern Soul scene. Artist, Martyn Ware, is calling out for memories, mementoes and music for a new art experience that leads right back to where it all began.
One of the artists working with Lancashire manufacturers as part of the Art In Manufacturing project, Ware is developing an immersive sound installation evoking Lancashire’s working and social heritage, to be unveiled in Blackburn town centre during The National Festival of Making, on Sat 12 – Sun 13 May 2018.
The search is on for details of the friendships, partners, unforgettable music, impressive new moves and, perhaps, artefacts that bring the era rushing back to life.
No contribution is too small as Ware seeks out details of the marriages that resulted from a meeting on Tony’s dancefloor, flyers stuffed into dusty shoe boxes and photos showing the fun that happened along the way.

More rare treats from Motown’s female roster, including 14 previously unissued 1960s gems.
Many moons have passed since our last “Motown Girls” project was released – but these things take time and a great deal of patience. We’re confident followers of the series will find this new volume very well worth the long wait.
The collection opens with ‘In My Heart I Know It’s Right’ by Gladys Knight & the Pips and closes with ‘So Long’ by the great Kim Weston in torch singer mode (a series tradition). ‘In My Heart I Know It’s Right’ was the first track Gladys and her guys recorded for Motown. The group had been introduced to the company by Larry Maxwell, who’d folded his Maxx label – where they had enjoyed modest chart success – in 1965 to join Motown. Gladys was opposed to the move, fearing they would just end up on the company’s assembly line, but she was outvoted by the Pips: “We decided we didn’t have that much to lose”, William Guest recalled. How right he was. ‘So Long’ was the closing theme of ...

X New 45 Releases from Kent Records

Those Kent people have been busy pushing out a shed full of nice 45s over the last couple of weeks.

Here's both a listing and audio preview of just some of these recent releases.

The PIED PIPER PLAYERS/THE CAVALIERS
The Bari Sax
Kent
Cat: PIPER 012 Rel: 29 Mar 18
Pied Piper
The Bari Sax Aka This Heart Is Lonely / We Go Together (Rap Version)

Mixed from the original Rose Batiste tape of ‘This Heart Is Lonely’, the fore-runner to her ‘I Miss My Baby’ on Revilot, this instrumental stomper will be recognised as what was later pressed as ‘Bari Track’. That’s Mike Terry on his famous baritone saxophone, along with his fellow Funk Brothers who also became the Pied Piper production company band. Pied Piper co-owner Shelley Haims wrote ‘We Go Together’, first recorded by the Moonglows in 1956. The Cavaliers’ 1966 soul update was initially issued on our first Pied Piper CD and also on the 100 Club anniversary single of 2013. This, though, is an alternate take with an early rap intro, which adds more charm. First time out on a 45.
Chuck JACKSON

The MERCED BLUE NOTES
Sundown (7")
Kent
Cat: CITY 051. Rel: 02 Apr 18
The Merced Blue Notes were hep Californians whose live shows were a major feature of teenage life in the early 60s San Joaquin Valley: “music with a beat that just won’t stop”. Top DJ Lee Miller picked up the previously unissued ‘Sundown’ track from their Ace CD and won over mod scene dancers with the infectious number. We have backed it with ‘Whole Lotta Something’ to introduce you to these hip music hounds personally.

Leon’s Creation - This Is The Beginning - Acid Jazz

News of an anticipated album release from Acid Jazz Records. Titled 'This Is The Begining' by 'Leans Creation' this fine album is now out and available via LP, Cd and download formats...
Listen Read Listen

Company Blurb
San Fransisco late 1960, two of the biggest groups to emerge from this scene were Santana and Sly and The Family Stone. For a while they were two of the biggest acts in the US and scores of local bands tried to follow in their footsteps. They were hard acts to follow and very few got to the stage of making a 45, never mind a whole LP.
One of the best to do just that were Leon’s Creation, whose debut LP “This Is The Beginning” Acid Jazz are reissuing here. A native of San Francisco Leon Patillo led the group, whose multi racial line-up echoed that of his heroes on the local scene. Self contained and gigging locally they made their debut album at the tiny Studio 10 who also custom pressed the album in extremely limited numbers

Released on Acid Jazz licensed directly from Leon Patillo, the package comes with in depth sleeve notes and is beautifully illustrated in both LP and CD formats.

2.    "Until You Were Gone" (4:16)

Soul Junction latest release Chuck Stephens Paying For Your Love

Press Release: Chuck Stephens   “Paying For Your Love/Let’s Get Nasty”   SJ1011
Release Date: Monday 9th April 2018
Listen whilst reading:
 SJ1011 - Chuck Stephens Promo.mp3
Chuck Stephens originally hailed from upstate New York reputedly Buffalo. He was during the mid 1970’s one of the leading disc jockey’s on the popular New York radio station WWRL AM. Chuck had always hankered with the aspiration of being a recording artist and in the pursuit of his dream approached the respected New York songwriting team of brothers Richard and Robert Poindexter.

Following an invitation from The Poindexter’s Chuck began to stage rehearsals at their home. Once the Poindexter’s felt Chuck was ready they took him into the studio to record one of their many compositions, “Let’s Get Nasty.
“Let’s Get Nasty” b/w “Girl I Want To Make Love To You” was to gain a release on The East Coast label during 1975.
The Poindexter’s then recorded a further two songs on Chuck both Richard and Robert compositions along with a third songwriter Jacqueline Members, who became the wife of Robert Poindexter. The songs in question were the excellent mid tempo outing “Coffee” backed with the sublime and currently  in demand modern soul dance track, “(I’m Still) Paying For Your Love” to use its original working title, although the “(I’m Still)” was later omitted from its released title. “Coffee/Paying For Your Love” although being released on the Leo Mini label (LS-110A) during1977 had in fact been recorded within a few months of Chucks “Let’s Get Nasty” release and had remained in the can until the Leo Mini release.

Chuck Stephens’s work came to the attention of the UK Rare/Northern Soul scene during 1975 as an import new release 45. When it was picked up and championed by legendary Blackpool Mecca Disc Jockey Colin Curtis firstly mixing it in with other new release and current spins of the day. At the time the Mecca Saturday night soul sessions always finished off with the last record of the night Young-Holt Unlimited’s Brunswick records outing “California Montage” a Dave Grusin penned song that featured as part of the soundtrack of 1969 Paul Newman film “The Winning”.
With the Mecca only running to a 2am finish a lot of  the audience would leave before 1am to go on to various all night venues. It was at this point that the aforementioned DJ Colin Curtis went on to create the term ‘The last Hour Mecca Sound”. In doing so Colin changed the dynamics of The Mecca from the more traditional northern soul sound and used the last hour to experiment with different styles, tempos, new releases and album tracks of which many became to be regarded as all time classic’s. One being Chuck Stephen’s “Let’s Get Nasty” which Colin promoted to the last record of the night in favour of Young-Holt’s “California Montage”
Soul Junction now presents to you, Chuck Stephens most popular two songs back to back.

Frank Wilson Test Press Stays in Detroit - Jack White & Record Store Day News

I can FINALLY announce where the record went and am very excited for it's release. Thanks to Jack White and Ben Blackwell for letting it stay in DETROIT!
We look forward to RSD 2018!  Pictures are on the Melodies & Memories facebook page.
FRANK WILSON'S "DO I LOVE YOU (INDEED I DO)" + CASS CORRIDOR RECORD STORE DAY FESTIVITIES
FRANK WILSON'S "DO I LOVE YOU (INDEED I DO)" + CASS CORRIDOR RECORD STORE DAY FESTIVITIES
Posted by on 29 March 2018
FRANK WILSON'S "DO I LOVE YOU (INDEED I DO)"
B/W "SWEETER AS THE DAYS GO BY" 7" SINGLE
ADDED TO RECORD STORE DAY RELEASES

In addition to our Record Store Exclusive releases previously announced, Third Man Records is proud to now include an additional title with an incredible story -- Frank Wilson's "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" b/w "Sweeter As The Days Go By" 7" single. Never officially released by Motown Records at the time it was recorded, this single has long been the holy grail for both Motown and Northern Soul collectors.
Third Man will be reissuing this rare find on purple vinyl exclusively for Record Store Day 2018 as part of their continuing partnership with Motown/Universal. Each Record Store Day exclusive copy is hand-stamped with the inimitable "quality control" rubber stamp used on Motown test pressings and facsimile labels believed to be penned by the hand of famous Motown producer Norman Whitfield. This single will be available at participating Record Store Day retailers as well as both Third Man Records storefronts (the original test pressing will be on display at Third Man's Cass Corridor location), with a black vinyl non-exclusive 7" planned for release in the future.
Frank Wilson is now ultimately best known as a producer at Motown, but he was once an aspiring artist himself. In the lead up to the intended release of "Do I Love You", Motown executive Berry Gordy asked Wilson if he wanted to follow the path of an artist or a writer/producer. Wilson chose producer, and this single was left for dead by the label. But good songs almost always find their way into the canon, and with bootleg copies credited to Eddie Foster in hopes of obfuscating the original artist and origin story, this song became a staple of the British Northern Soul scene after one of the two previously known copies of the record was stolen from Motown in the 1970's. A third pristine test pressing appeared in the recent past at Melodies & Memories in Eastpointe, Michigan, and was subsequently sold by record owners Denise and Dan Zieja to Jack White.

George Jackson - Leavin' Your Homework Undone - Kent Album

A recent release from Kent Records
Leavin Your Homework Undone - In The Studio With George Jackson 1968-71  CDKEND 477
This album features first time out tracks from the man George Jackson. There are 24 'work in progress' tracks,  all recorded at Fame during the late 1960s and the early 1970s via the Muscle Shoals and Memphis studios. A clip of the release notes written by Tony Rounce aka @TONY ROUNCE follows below...
Release Notes preview
...since Ace purchased Goldwax and established licensing deals with Fame and Sounds Of Memphis that the extent of his body of work has become apparent. A CD apiece of his Goldwax and Sounds Of Memphis recordings and no less than three of his Fame sides have been a revelation, in terms of both quality and quantity....
...Most of the tracks here were recorded not long after George joined the company and benefit from the consummate musicianship of the great Fame rhythm section the Swampers. One or two are basic demos, but the majority are of high enough quality to have been issued just as they are. Soul fans may recognise ‘A Man And A Half’, ‘Never In Public’ and ‘Your Love Made A U-Turn’ from the versions by Wilson Pickett, Candi Staton, James Carr and Jimmy Hughes, but George’s are the only known recordings of most of the songs. Although it’s certain there will be no fifth collection of George’s Fame recordings, the series definitely goes out on a soulful high with this one.

Martin Freeman & Eddie Piller present Jazz On The Corner - Acid Jazz Out Now

The latest release from Acid Jazz is out today.
Martin Freeman & Eddie Piller present Jazz On The Corner - Acid Jazz
Born out of a radio show 2 years ago this VA selection is set up to launch Acid Jazz's 30th Anniversary celebrations.
Available in 3 formats vinyl (double lp), cd (double album) and download from all the usual suspects.
Here's the company blurb
When Acid Jazz founder Eddie Piller asked the actor Martin Freeman to do a jazz radio show they could hardly imagine the response. From around the world emails and tweets inundated the show and they swore to themselves that they couldn’t leave it there.
Now, two years on this compilation of their favourite jazz has arrived. From the rolling hard bop of Lee Morgan and Art Blakey, via screaming soul organ, jazz funk original acid jazz onwards to the post modern spiritual jazz of Kasami Washington, this is an incredible journey.
Released in March on double CD and Vinyl with deluxe gatefold packaging this is the album that will launch Acid Jazz’s 30th Anniversary celebrations.

Mello Souls - Fisher Harmon R.I.P.

Mello Souls - Fisher Harmon R.I.P.
I'm sad to let you know that Fisher P. Harmon died, aged 70, last month
Fisher alongside Silas Phifer, Jim T & Randy provided us with one of the most loved and iconic 45s of all time.
He was a great guy and was both humbled, amazed and very happy to learn that 'We Can Make It' had finally hit home. This was the side that featured his lead vocal
When Rupert & I visited him, in September 2016, he was full of great stories about his life and times and the journey that the Mello Souls took that resulted in their one, and only, recording session on September 24th 1967
We were thrilled that we reunited him that week with the 'teenagers' who provided the music.
The pictures show Fisher, at home, with his 45 .... touching base with Larry, who was one of those 'teenagers, and meeting, for the first time in decades, the children of Mr Marshall, the group's manager

ZZ Hill - That's It! The Complete Kent Recordings 1964-1968

Out now from Kent Records a new double album offering a complete package of all ZZ Hill's Kent recordings, together for the first time.
Z.Z. Hill - That's It! The Complete Kent Recordings 1964-1968 - CDTOP2 476
Release notes (summary)
His complete recordings for the Bihari brothers’ Kent label, together on one package for the first time, including many making their CD debut.

Soul Source is Hiring... Job Opening

Soul Source is Hiring...
Well we are looking at a few changes this spring
Over time the way the site gets used changes and evolves and so there will always be a need to reflect these changes in how the site works/delivers/operates.
One aspect that we are looking at improving is how the various main sections of the site (the news feature, the forums, the sales features and the event guide) are run.
The thinking is to bring in a new way of looking after each of these main Soul Source features by 'hiring'  people who can look after and manage each feature on a regular basis, and also play a main part in taking these features further upwards and onwards  in the future

Are After
At first we are looking for 2 people,  who be up for looking after and managing one of the two main features below...
1. 'Forums' - One person to look after, promote and encourage/moderate the main Soul Source Forums, basically all the forums apart from the sales related ones
2 'Sales Feature' -  One person to look after, promote and manage/moderate  the Soul Source Sales features which include the sales forums, classifieds, feedback feature etc
Requirements...
1. Passionate about soul music - has to be a given
2.  A way with the words and the tech - eg good communication and decent IT skills
3. Spare Time/Active - be ready willing and available
4. Interested and enthusiastic about the relevant section/feature - eg Interested in soul trading if sales or if forums enjoy talking about soul etc etc
It will be a semi-pro set up which at first which will mean extremely part time. Hours paid will be limited at first, and will be more spare cash than a salary. However as things move on over time, hours available should improve all things going well.
Drop us a pm @mike @mike for further info/details/talk via or via the contact link at the bottom of the page  - just let us know which of the two position you are interested in and we can then both take things from there
cheers

Lamont Dozier UK Tour Details and Video

More formal news announcement along with a video regarding the upcoming UK tour by Lamont Dozier

MOTOWN LEGEND LAMONT DOZIER ANNOUNCES DEBUT UK TOUR FEATURING HIS CLASSIC SONGS 'RE-IMAGINED'
Legendary Songwriter-Producer-Artist and one third of Holland/Dozier/Holland announces his debut UK tour.
Lamont Dozier has written over fifty #1 hits for artists such as Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & the Supremes, The Four Tops and more as part of the songwriting team Holland/Dozier/Holland.
On this tour Lamont and his band, featuring acclaimed musician/producer/arranger Fred Mollin, will be performing his classic hits in support of a new album, scheduled for 2018 release, which 're-imagines' these iconic songs in a more intimate, 'unplugged' format. Lamont will also, no doubt, share many of the stories behind the songs.
Detroit-born Lamont Dozier was signed to Berry Gordy's Motown Records in 1962. After hooking up with Eddie & Brian Holland, the trio wrote a breath-taking number of hits such as 'Baby Love', 'It's the Same Old Song', 'This Old Heart of Mine', 'Where Did Our Love Go', 'You Can't Hurry Love', 'Reach Out I'll be There', 'Jimmy Mack', 'Stop! In the Name of Love', 'Bernadette', '(Love is Like a) Heatwave', 'Baby I Need Your Loving' and many, many more.
The Invictus & Hot Wax record labels were set up in 1968 by Holland/Dozier/Holland and more hits followed such as 'Band of Gold' by Freda Payne, 'Give Me Just a Little More Time' by Chairmen of the Board and more. In 1972 the Lamont Dozier solo career commenced with 'Why Can't We Be Lovers' followed by more success with 'Fish Ain't Bitin' and 'Going Back To My Roots'. Lamont Dozier has also collaborated with Simply Red, Kanye West, Alison Moyet, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Mark Ronson, Solange Knowles, Joss Stone amongst many others, during his long and illustrious career.
Special guest support comes from award-winning singer/songstress Jo Harman, herself a BBC Radio 2 play-listed artist, whose critically acclaimed and commercially successful recent album, 'People We Become', recorded in Nashville, includes a cameo from soul superstar Michael McDonald.

Kool & Together - The Fabulous Dynamics - Big Crown records

KOOL & TOGETHER
"SITTIN ON A RED HOT STOVE" b/w  "NASSAU BEAT"
AVAILABLE IN THE BCR WEBSTORE NOW

Big Crown is proud to present this reissue 7 inch from Texas’s own Kool & Together.
The A side, “Sittin’ On a Red Hot Stove” is an infectious, medium-paced funk movement that chugs along with the help of some sharp drums from Joe and a rolling bass line that never quits. Originally edited by Texas record mogul Huey Meaux, the 45 version clocks in at just under two and a half minutes, and gave the band its strongest single. It’s an anecdotal tale of a woman who is lusted after but so mean-spirited, she could melt the romance away.
Side B is an unreleased demo version from Kool & Together working up the monster “Funky Nassau”. Clearly something they never finished, the raw recording and lo fidelity of it is what give what they call “Nassau Beat” it’s charm.

THE FABULOUS DYNAMICS
"GET HIP TO YOURSELF" b/w "EVERYTIME I SEE A PRETTY GIRL"
AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER IN THE BCR WEBSTORE NOW
Big Crown Records is proud to present a recording that could have easily been lost forever like so many others from it’s era. Taken from the only known copy of this acetate that appears to be a rehearsal recording for the group to solicit local gigs, these stripped down versions of “Get Hip To Yourself” and “Every Time I See a Pretty Girl” are American relics.
The only information about the acetate is handwritten on a piece of masking tape affixed to the A side, the name of the group, The Fabulous Dynamics, and the track listing. Of the 6 songs on the demo, we pulled the 2 most buttery, delectable, sweet & savory slices of mid 60’s group soul.
Stripped down to vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar, both sides of this 7 capture the lo-fi, intimate sonic landscape of yesteryear, something that is often emulated, but never quite duplicated. Another pretty cool detail about this acetate, it was found in the personal record collection of Lamont Dozier.

We pressed up an limited edition (250 piece) run of handstamped labels that are exclusive to the BCR Webstore. For our collector friends, get them while they last....

Win Win - Bettye Swann - The Money Masters Album

Time for a new Soul Source members competition
Up for grabs is a fine viny lp from Kent records that was released just prior to xmas, not only recent but also still sealed!
The Money Masters - Bettye Swann  KENT 508
A vinyl album featuring 14 of her finest sides for Money Records of Los Angeles.

An earlier album had been scheduled after her first hit but was shelved when the follow-ups failed. That album would have contained ‘The Dance Is Over’ and a faster version of her later single ‘I Think I’m Falling In Love’, both included here....
To Enter/Win
All you have to do this time to be in with a shout of this fine album landing on your doormat, is simply 'up vote'  this article (new members look down and right - see the green arrow? hit that and your name should register as a up voter)

Introducing Kimberlite Records

Hi all,

My friends and I have started a new label called Kimberlite Records in Edmonton Canada and we’re about to release our first record featuring a local group called The Estimations.  The Estimations are heavily influenced by the “big city” soul sound and their first release features an up-tempo side with latin percussion b/w a Sam Cooke influenced ballad.

This has been a really rewarding project for all involved and we’re currently going into production on our next record which will have a funky crossover feel b/w a sweet soul track.

If you’re curious please check us out at www.kimberliterecords.com, Kimberlite Records on Facebook, or @kimberliterecords on Instagram.

Cheers,
Jeff

The Anti-Valentine 2018 List - Nominations Needed

Haven't done this for a year or two, maybe longer, so could be enjoyable.
How about nominating your most apt soul choice for the 2018 anti-valentine song list
As previously any songs that do have the anti-valentine vibe are most welcome, though I'd say 'soul' and 'anti-valentine' and 'humour' being the main keywords
Last time we did it this was one of the main contenders...
high bar, so whats on the members 2018 anti-valentines list?
over to you...

Sink Soul Club to close

We have been told that the Magnet Bar in Liverpool which is the home of the Sink Soul Club has been sold and will cease to be a music venue after Sunday 18th February.
The last ever event at the Sink club will be on Sunday 18th February, we would like to thank everyone who has attended the Sink over the years and have made it one of the best Sunday afternoon venues in the North West.
Another historic club gone, the Magnet was due to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year so this closure is a double blow.
We will be carrying on with the spirit of the Sink when we find a suitable venue--we have received a number of offers and will let everyone know when details are finalised.
Thanks.

Movements Vol 9 - Various Artists -Tramp Records

Available now on double-gatefold LP+7", CD and digital download
SALES NOTES:
**INITIAL 400 LPs CONTAIN A BONUS 7" BY MEL-O-MADNEZZ**
IT'S TIME TO PAAAARTY! Why? The Universe knows that Tramp is celebrating their 40th trip around the sun in 2018. And what about planet Earth? Well… it is as blind as it is in so many other situations. Therefore, it is time to shine the light on Tramp for all of its unremitting efforts. As musical diversity is vanishing, especially in the field of African American music from the 1960s/70s, it is our duty to stop the extinction of threatened species of music in the same way an animal welfare activist would do anything to save a gorilla's life. Tramp Records keeps this beautiful heritage alive, every single day, again and again and again. So we are here wondering why Earth people and especially to those from our beloved home country; why? why are you just sitting there, going about your life unaware of this historic event? What a pity!
The announcement is especially striking when it comes to the prestigious "Movements" series. Like all its predecessors, this ninth volume contains Rare Groove nuggets recorded between the early 1960s and the late 1970s. The fact that only one of the songs appear anywhere else is a jaw-dropping phenomenon! The chronological track listing starts with an amazing cover version: "Fever" by Gee Gee Shinn & the Boogie Kings. Bus Brown, Earl Demus and Chuck Finney remain in the same direction although their contributions are slightly jazzier. Chick Willis' gut-wrenching "Sometime Soon" easily rivals James Brown's "It's A Man's World" and the recordings by Australia and J.R. are beautiful examples of privately produced soul from the 1970s. The latin-soul of "Cho Cho San" by Hummingbird 4 heads the sound in another direction for the next three tunes, highlighted by one more stunning cover version, Oscar Brown Jr.'s "Brother, Where Are You?". The album closes with some pre-disco tracks from the mid-to-late 1970s. Funk 7" collectors will freak out to finally get a chance to listen to Mel-O-Madnezz' superheavy "What You Getting High On" but will certainly also enjoy The Counts, Reunion and HC's dance floor bomb cover of "Harlem Shuffle".

Over a hundred great unknown songs have been re-released on the first eight volumes in the "Movements" series, the majority of which can not be found elsewhere, and Vol. 9 is no exception. The work of Germany's tiniest but grooviest record label is still incomprehensibly underestimated. We know you diggers, collectors, mavens, aficionados, fanatics, completists, enthusiasts, and just plain record geeks know what's up and we heartily salute you! Without your support there would be no Tramp Records. But now it's time for a broader cultural shift for good music and a sweeping move to uphold the legacy of the unsung heroes of funk and soul. Therefore, we humbly petition you: in 2018, Don't keep all this glory to yourself! Turn your friends and neighbors on! Thank you!
Key selling points:
- initial 400 LPs contain a bonus 7" by Mel-O-Madnezz ("What You Getting High On")
- the double vinyl LP comes with a full album download code
- deluxe double-gatefold LP with detailed liner notes, label scans & unseen photographs
- all but one song appear on vinyl-LP for the very first-time
