The Soulful Kinda Music Guide To The West Coast: A discography of West Coast Soul

The Soulful Kinda Music Guide To The West Coast: A discography of West Coast Soul
The West Coast, sunshine and Soul! Two cities dominate the book, Hollywood, and Los Angeles, and not surprisingly the same names keep appearing, either as label owners, or producers, or artists who label hopped. And the address that keeps appearing time and time again is the iconic Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. So it’s no wonder there was such an interchange between the different labels really when a huge number of them were on the same street, no matter how long it is.
The same format is used in this book as previous ones, I’ve tried to feature as many little labels that only had a few releases as well as some of the majors who had hundreds. The same with the artists. Some like Ike Turner has a career that stretched over multiple labels, and decades of releases, whereas others might have managed only one or two releases.

Good Good Feeling! More Motown Girls - New Ace Cd Out Now

This Friday gives us a new Motown connected release from Ace Records, Titled 'Good Good Feeling! More Motown Girls' we get for our money 25 Motown tracks all delivered by fabulous female motown artists
Many of the tracks were previously available only as digital downloads, and six are unreleased in any format.
The release notes on Ace Records website features the man behind the series Keith Hughes giving out some background details on those six exclusive unissued titles, a clip follows
After two singles on VIP, the Lewis Sisters’ recording career with Motown was effectively over, but they continued writing and cutting demos for the company; ‘My World Is Crumbling’ was their penultimate effort. Theirs is the original version of a track now known as a Brenda Holloway classic, thanks to the appearance of her recording on the popular “A Cellarful Of Motownǃ” CD series.

‘Good Good Feeling’ is possibly the last of Brenda Holloway’s 100-plus Motown recordings, about three quarters of which languished in the vaults until relatively recent times. It’s clearly unfinished – strings are shown on the recording sheet, yet are not present on the tape – but nonetheless Brenda gives it her best. Following some anguish over her tracks being passed over so many times, she left the company in 1968 to concentrate on married life.

Mississippi-born blues singer Hattie Littles recorded over 40 sides for Motown, almost all of which were unissued at the time. Although she had only one release, she was a fixture at the company between 1962 and 1964, touring with the Spinners and Marvin Gaye when not busy recording. ‘When I Was In School’ is from the pen of Earl Johnson....
Full release notes and purchase options can be had at the Ace Records Website, link below

Real Side Records Presents 'Soul On The Real Side #12' - New Cd

Latest release in the long running series
Real Side Records Presents "Soul On The Real Side #12"
Here's the release notes...
OUTTA SIGHT presents Soul On The Real Side Volume 12. The architects of soul are back with a stunning new 20-track Summer 2021 collection and, incredibly, almost half are NEW-TO-CD!
Our show opens with the first of our new-to-CD tracks, the seldom heard “I Need Love” by East Coast disco/funk band Daybreak. The sophisticated New Jersey 45 was originally played at Wigan Casino by Richard Searling shortly after release (covered up as “Search The World” and attributed to Tyrone Davis). It has since become one of the most cherished and in-demand of all Modern Soul records.
Track 2 sees the debut reissue of an obscure Philadelphia disc, “American Girl”, by Roscoe Thomas. Our sincere thanks go to label boss Frank Fioravanti, who provided this superb Latin-tinged crossover delight plus a further 5 Sound Gems. The rarest on the label is Billy Harner’s 1976 “I Got It From Heaven” (trk. 11), another Wigan Casino exclusive for DJ Richard Searling.
A special mention must go to Gean West’s Relatives, who make a guest appearance (trk. 5) with their emotive re-invention of the 1976 release “This World Is Moving Too Fast”. During recording Gean fell into a coma and passed away before the album was released, leaving us with this breathtaking and poignant legacy.
Our thanks also go to all at Mainstream Records, who, once again, supply a handful of class Seventies sides, including Sugar Billy’s original version of “Super Duper Love” (trk. 15), popularised by Joss Stone in more recent times, plus, of course, Almeta Lattimore’s timeless classic (trk. 7).
PEACE, LOVE, SOUL
TRACK LIST
Daybreak - I Need Love
Roscoe Thomas - American Girl
The Words Of Wisdom - You’re A Friend Of Mine (Vocal)
Spice feat. Bunny Davis - Sweet Norma Jones

The Falcons - You’ve Got The Power
Almeta Lattimore - These Memories
Ruby Winters - If This Is Our Last Time
Gloria Walker - Gift Of Love
Jimmy Norman - I Wanna Make Love To You
Billy Harner - I Got It From Heaven
Crystal Motion - You’re My Main Squeeze (Part 1)

New Diggin' Deep 45 - News August 2021

THE NEWEST ‘DIGGIN’ DEEP’ LIMITED EDITION 45
RELEASE DATE FRIDAY 17th SEPTEMBER 2021
AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER FROM 20th AUGUST 2021!
Can You Dig It?
DD016A LEE HURST – WHOLE LOTTA YOUR LOVE
DD016B TERRY & THE PYRATES – SOMEONE
It is with great pleasure that we announce the upcoming Diggin’ Deep 45. A much-anticipated issue of an iconic and sought after early 70’s Soul 45, backed with a legendary, underground, deep ballad; two beautiful sides, to lift your spirits and feed your soul!
Both these tracks are from the vast repertoire of Trend Records in Calgary, Canada.
LEE HURST – WHOLE LOTTA YOUR LOVE (1973)
London Ontario’s Frank “Lee” Hurst cut his teeth playing in such Canadian bands as Pepper Tree, which developed a following on the Ontario dance circuit
While known as a bassist, Lee’s soulful vocals eventually caught the ear of record exec Merv Buchanan, who laid down two of Lee’s originals - “Whole Lotta Your Love” & “Saturday’s Wild.”
Gerry Lacoursiere, Toronto-based president of A&M Canada released “Whole Lotta Your Love” as a single in 1973. The song received strong airplay throughout Canada but went no further.
Many years later, recognised as a high calibre ‘Sweet and Low’ Soul tune, the record captured the imagination of the UK collector’s scene. Over the past few years, it has been deemed perfect for such enlightened Soul venues as Carib Soul, Majestic Soul and our own Diggin’ Deep events, aired by the likes of Mark Houghton, Tommo and Blake Helliwell.
The recording itself is so alluring it was picked up by Sony Pictures and featured in the soundtrack of the award-winning movie ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ in 2018. This has only added to the disc’s growing appeal and subsequent demand, leading to this timely and welcome vinyl issue.
Following the release in 1973 of his seminal Canadian single, Mr. Hurst more or less disappeared - leaving this soul masterpiece shrouded in mystery and intrigue. We can now reveal that in 2010, Lee Hurst quietly passed away in his hometown of London, Ontario, unaware that his recording would grow to become so cherished and appreciated in later years. The limited edition, Diggin’ Deep collectors 45, aims to satisfy some of the newfound demand for this very special, vintage, Soul recording.
TERRY & THE PYRATES – SOMEONE (1968)
Terry & The Pyrates, were a hot R&B band with roots at The Modern Age Lounge, in east end Toronto. Originally known as “The Dana” they made waves throughout the greater Toronto area in the late 1960s - playing high school dances throughout the city.
The original line-up of Glen Daigle (vocals), Val Ruffo (guitar), Mike Levine (bass), Lance Wright (drums) and Aldur Kunder (organ) shifted when Daigle left the band and was replaced by the more experienced vocal powerhouse Terry Walker, who had worked as MC and back-up singer for The Associates. John Tarsey, Peter Misfud and John Rudder were quickly added to the horn section and the band’s sound exploded in new and exciting Soul and Funk directions.
“Someone” was a standout feature of their shows as this live recording, from one of their concerts in Calgary, superbly demonstrates. The track received extensive regional airplay, as they gigged heavily throughout Ontario, but went no further. After a number of years the members went their separate ways with members forming R&B band Aurora Borealis.
Diggin’ Deep are honoured to be able to bring you these superb recordings. We hope you’ll agree, this is a 45 that every Soul fan will want to have in their collection. Both sides will be available on a beautifully mastered vinyl 45. DD016 collector’s release is a limited pressing @ just £12 each plus postage and packing.
Avoid Disappointment. Pre-order ON THE WEBSITE ONLY now, while stocks last:

Book Review: It Ain’t Retro: Daptone Records & The 21st-Century Soul Revolution

A REVIEW OF 'IT AIN'T RETRO DAPTONE RECORDS & THE 21ST -CENTURY SOUL REVOLUTION: JESSICA LIPSKY'
(JAWBONE PRESS)
Daptone Records, the Brooklyn -based record label reached it’s 20th anniversary this year. With any celebrations under a pandemic having to be kept small they are releasing a live album from their 2014 soul revue at the famous Harlem Apollo in October before that, just out is ; It Ain’t Retro: Daptone Records & The 21st -Century Soul Revolution by Jessica Lipsky,  a book that chronicles and celebrates this unique label’s history & more.
Lipsky, a Brooklyn based journalist in music, culture & politics introduces her book, in fact, with this very revue. A perfect scene setter for the bands, characters, & the heart & soul of Daptone that follows in her compelling journey over the twenty years  and where the sold out crowd witnessed continuous sets by the likes of: Como Mamas, Naomi Shelton, Sugarman 3, Antibalas, The Budos Band and headliners, Charles Bradley & Sharon Jones.
Firstly, and the devil is often in the detail, this book looks so good - a stylish striking cover and some great photos in the centre of the book and weighs in at an impressive 300+ pages - this is no featherweight cut & paste treatment of an idiosyncratic but influential label. And such a great title. And as Lipsky has loved the records, played out with them as a D.J. interviewed the main players before for U.S. publications we are in safe hands with her as our tour guide. As a journalist she knows the two rules: inform & entertain - she manages effortlessly to tick those two boxes.
Coupled with her enthusiasm and passion as a fan, I was taken back, almost fifty years, to Charlie Gillett’s ‘Making Tracks: the History Of Atlantic Records. Gillett, also a journalist, D.J,, music fan, explored this famous label and produced a book still revered to this day as the benchmark of music biographies. It Ain’t Retro’ is that good. If you think it’s straightforward, Justine Picardie & Dorothy Wade also wrote the story of Atlantic Records years later and it failed to capture the energy of the company and left you with a dry treatment of something that was alive and exciting. Avoiding this, Lipsky has structured or woven several threads of the story: The two main players: Gabe Roth & Neal Sugarman, the two main artistes: Sharon Jones & Charles Bradley, and the influence this label has had, and still has, on the U.S. music scene not just musically but how they operate. To juggle those and also keeping track with the many other Daptone outfits and releases can be like catching water but Lipsky by getting behind the scenes and talking to the right people about the right thing gets the colour and gets the quotes. And Roth & Sugarman are very quotable.
“I really, personally, never tried to be somebody I’m not. Or tried to emulate some music, or tried to steal some history or tradition that I’m not part of. What I try to do is make records that sound good to me, and make honest records.” Roth in an interview in 2010.And Sugarman, “If it’s a new record (but) they liked it before they realized we were new, and once they realized they liked it, they couldn’t not like it…”
Not only is he touching on the bogus idea that’s in vogue of ‘guilty pleasure’ but also the accusations levelled against Daptone, by either unashamed ‘purists’ or the well meaning that they are just copyists. Look no further than the book’s title. I said it was great title as it doesn’t skirt round the elephant in the room but has it in bold letters bang on the cover. And raises your curiosity as to where or who did it come from? In fact, you do have to look quite far into the book to find out who. “Speaking to the New Yorker, Sharon Jones snapped: “There’s nothin’ retro about me, baby, I am soul!”
And although Daptone (and before that Desco Records) was born out of young punks who lived and breathed music and had no business training they had, from the get go, a philosophy, or at least an unshakeable belief of what they were never going to be and the book captures this so well. “At the time it was all about the break beats, and heavy stuff like that, “ Roth says. “Everything was kind of slick and all the musicians in New York at the time were plying six strings, slapping and popping everything. I couldn’t find anyone who wanted to play it simple” But he soon did with guitarist Binky Griptite (Frank Stribling) “ We just started talking about music and we were on the same page. It’s a syndrome - good guitar players will have a tendency to want to show how good they are and play a lot. I was just like, Yeah, I have nothing to prove, I just want to play rhythm.”
Lipsky certainly isn’t blinkered or focused on just a Brooklyn or Stateside view on Daptone she writes extensively on the U.K. Music scene’s role in putting them on the map, specifically club D.J., Keb Darge, and she includes the great ‘recording manifesto’ by Roth that UK hip-hop & funk magazine, Big Daddy invited him to write. However, although this manifesto makes great reading, characteristically direct but intelligent, Lipsky is able to show by skilful research and the pertinent anecdotal stuff that Daptone’s rise often a series of happy accidents and/or chuztpah: with Desco records (pre-Daptone) they decide to just phone soul legend, Lee Fields and persuade him he needs to sing on their recordings.
Sharon Jones was desperate to get back singing just as Daptone came along, Mark Ronson loving their sound which ultimately led to the Dap Kings playing on Amy Winehouses’s Grammy Award winning ‘Back to Black album. But the book also captures the series of setbacks particularly financial which hit them and it was through Jones & Winehouse’s success which kept them afloat and more and also how resourceful the company was when either Jones was sick or sadly after she was gone. With a company that thrived on live shows and it’s revenue - this stopped when Sharon stopped. In fact, it was at her funeral that maybe the most definitive words, by her manager, Austen Holman, on Daptone were expressed: “The thing that makes Daptone so special is they do not compromise."
It would have been good maybe to have the views of James Hunter, their only U.K. Artist, a man who has been with a number of labels so is insight to why it works with Daptone would have been interesting and also some photos of the new acts. With both Roth & Sugarman out of Brooklyn and 20 years older they are now busy as 'veterans’ with the ‘sweet soul from the West Coast through their label, Penrose.
I was fortunate to know Charlie Gillettt and, if he was still around, I expect he would be interested in the recent ‘world’ music releases by Daptone has he’d moved on from soul but I’m confident he would have loved this book.
Daptone has survived and thrived because of a love of the music, professionalism and a focus - all the qualities Lipsky shares in her writing.
On the back of Gillett’s ‘Making Tracks’ there’s a quote from Creem magazine: “Wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who cares about rock.”...
I wholeheartedly recommend ‘It Ain’t Retro’ to anyone who cares about soul.”

Description:
It Ain’t Retro follows a family of musicians whose dedication to 60s and 70s sounds went from dingy basement studios all the way to the White House.
Soul is the most powerful expression of American music -- a distinct combination of roots, migration, race, culture, and politics packaged together for your dancing pleasure. But if you thought the sounds of Motown or Stax Records died along with 8-tracks and macramé, you’d be wrong. For two decades, Daptone Records has churned out hard funk and such beautiful soul that these records sparked a musical revolution.
Run by a collective of soul-obsessed producers and musicians, the Brooklyn-based independent label launched the careers of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and Bruno Mars. Their records paid homage but never lip service to the original artists, proving that soul is still culturally relevant and just as exciting.
It Ain’t Retro charts this revival’s players, sounds, and tectonic shifts over the past twenty years, taking you from dingy clubs where soul crazed DJs packed the dancefloor, to just uptown where some of the genre’s heaviest musicians jumpstarted the renaissance in a basement studio, and all the way to the White House. This definitive tale of Daptone Records’ soulful revolution chronicles the label’s history, players, and sounds while dissecting the scene’s cultural underpinnings, which continue to reverberate in pop music.

Soul on Screen : An appreciation

Soul on Screen :
An appreciation of Soul music's portrayal by Hollywood and some future options?
In anticipation of the cinema release of “Respect” I thought I'd prompt discussion on previous biographical films, and raise a few suggestions for some future ones.  I have focussed on drama-based productions as opposed to the many excellent range of documentaries available which warrant a separate focus. I have also restricted it to Black music which has delivered its fair share of Hollywood biographical productions in recent years.

What do we want from a bio film? Well, its complex as we often come as committed fans of the artist and demand accuracy but might feel uncomfortable with a warts and all expose, but few of us come to the event with any illusions by the time Hollywood delivers it on celluloid.
Primarily we should hope the production has at least done justice to the artists talents and achievements. We would hope for a fair degree of accuracy, both visually, musically and in the narrative.  (It's often easy to forget that most lead roles are lip synching to existing recordings by the original artist/s) We would also want to be entertained but at the same time accept that these films come with painful life histories, particularly when it involved the social struggles that many Black artists had to overcome. These films can be notorious for their mythologising, inaccuracies, and twee cliched scenes. You might be forgiven for rejecting them all and just settle for solely for the glorious live celebration displayed in Summer of Soul. Soul music does not need Hollywoods validation, but its history and struggles deserve to be seen by   a wider audience. Despite their flaws I'm a sucker for these films, particularly the focus on an artist's early years. I relish seeing artists crafting a sound or an identity, overcoming hurdles and disadvantage. Nothing beats seeing an iconic song or tune being born in the studio or some empty bar.

Whilst Black music will always be my passion, I’ll admit that one of my favourite film biography’s is the 1954 “The Glen Miller Story” , staring James Stewart. On examination it doesn’t stand up to the level of factual scrutiny common to Soul source, but that won't prevent us from enjoying it. There is a 17th word ‘verisimilitude ‘which breaks down to mean,’a likeness to the truth’. This would ring alarm bells in a court room, or parliament, when it comes to the crafting of the Glen Miller Bands“ Pennsylvania Six-Five Thousand” or who really discovered the Jackson Five I can forgive Hollywood some dramatic licence.  Other non Soul credible biographies I would recommend are  “ A Coal Miner’s Daughter (Patsy Kline ) and Love and Mercy (Brian Wilson)
Hollywood is a canny beast who with an acute sense of what appeals whether is it fact or fiction.  The films I have listed here all draw on the emotional roller coaster of early struggles, personal and social obstacles, the elation of success and the tragic price that sometimes comes with it. I have included a couple of TV mini series productions, which are currently available on You Tube for free.
If you have any doubts about the emotional and commercial appeal of this film genre’ you might be surprised to know that there are currently a dozen such films currently in production, and half of the artists are still alive.  They include Bob Dylan, Robbie Williams and Madonna.  (Hollywood ever impatient to make a buck ahead of a rival !)  Fortunately they also include , Louis Armstrong, Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, Teddy Pendegrass, and Dusty Springfield. (Focussing on her Memphis and Motown years. ) Perhaps the most long awaited is Warner Brothers “Whats Going On “biography of Marvin Gaye due in 2023. Two of the films below appear in Rolling Stone magazines top 30 music biographies. Get on Up is No. 20 on the list and Ray comes in at 13.

Ray
Commonly acknowledged as one of the best biographical films made, it was at least 15 years in development by an indie Production company before Universal took it on. They gave director Taylor Hackford a generous 150 minutes to portray the epic tale of Ray Charles’s rise from Southern rural poverty, family tragedy and the onset of blindness by the age of seven. Jamie Foxx was totally convincing at the adult Charles who was schooled in classical piano and went on to fuse a career and sound that incorporated Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Country, into what became the roots of Soul music.
The film follows his struggles with alcohol, drugs, racism and some complex and volatile relationships. These are portrayed with powerful female roles showing the anguish of his mother, his wife and the Raylettes . Far from a sanitised figure he’s shown as single minded, often selfish figure, both at home and in his career. Produced on a $40 million budget it went on to earn Universal $124 million and two academy awards for Best Actor and and a Golden Globe, BAFTA and Critics Choice. Sadly, Ray Charles died of liver disease aged 73, four months before the film's release.
Stand Out line:
Marlene Andre “Ray what did I tell you about cooking in the dark? Are you trying to burn the house down?
Ray Charles: “Think about it, Marlene, what do I need the light for ?”
Musical Highlight
There are many but this clinches it for me.
1953 and Ahmet Ertegun has persuaded Ray to sign for Atlantic Records but is disappointed that he is staying safe with Nat King Cole sound a like songs . Ahmetpresents him with a song he has penned himself, “ The Mess Around ‘which Ahmet starts to deliver. Within seconds Charles, sat at a piano, has taken over the song and delivers it with trademark panache and vigour. It was a minor hit but the first of many on Atlantic and resurfaced in style with John Candy lip syncing in the priceless Trains , Planes and Automobiles.
Scene Stealer :
In a flash back we see recently blind Ray aged 7 in the kitchen where he takes a fall. He cries out for pleading for his Mother, who has witnessed it standing silently nearby. For a split second she steps forward to help, but then makes the painful decision to freeze and fake her absence knowing he must develop coping strategies of his own for a tough life ahead. Little Ray delivers in abundance.
Scene Stealer 2)
Ray bumps into  his old friend Quincy Jones at the Newport Jazz festival  shortly after he has released the MOR hit Georgia on My Mind . The pair discuss this musical direction and the prospect of working together, but Ray is contracted to work in the South. Quincy provides Ray with an unambiguous response on the issue.
“ When I left Seattle and went down there it felt like Id walked into a prison cell. You know a black man is  a boy in Mississippi  Ray , even if he’s 80 years old. Im never playing for Jim Crow again. “
Within months Ray reverses his decision to play to segregated audiences in his home state of Georgia.

Get On Up. : 2014.
The films history dated  back to 2000 with Ron Howards Imagine Entertainment committed to its development , later joined by  British partnership of  Mick Jagger and the Butterworth brothers who contribute to an excellent script.  Howard graduate Chadwick Boseman  came to the lead  role with two successful sports films under his belt and  a readiness to take on one of America’s most iconic and yet complex characters. (Not to mention some exacting choreography)
His life is delivered in a series of short flashbacks , not necessarily in date order and often involving JB addressing the audience through the camera. I prefer a linear narrative  myself but this worked. His life was rife with drama , tension, turmoil and incredible creativity . Scenes are selected from the rural poverty of the South, to his early success via prison and his gospel years. Brown was never far from a conflict whether its with The JB’s , record companies  , women  , politicians , or the police . There’s no sanitised  attempt to avoid his faults . ( Drug use , tax avoidance ,domestic abuse and bullying )Costing $30 million the film grossed $33.4  million worldwide at the box office.   Boseman went on to more success with The Avengers franchise, Black Panther and Ma Raineys Black Bottom before he sadly succumbed to cancer in 2020.

Stand out Lines
Two from the many available  :
“I'm James Brown I made a difference, y’all cats might not own my records, but I bet your bottom dollar every record you own got a piece of me in “
Bobby Byrd risks telling James that he’d like to have his own career, which Brown sees as an act of betrayal and assures Byrd he doesn’t need him. Before leaving Byrd retorts :
“Funny thing James, I ain’t leaving you on your own. You already on your own. You always were. “
Music Highlight
In 1964 JB takes to the stage to deliver his trademark raucous brand of Funk and Soul to an ecstatic crowd of teenagers who’ve come to see the Rolling Stones, Brown is denied headline spot despite his greater pedigree. Knowing the Stones are looking on in awe off stage James delivers  slides, glides, spins and kicks with a raucous performance exiting past the amazed Stones with a cheeky  “Welcome to America “ . .

Cadillac Records (2008)
Reputed to be the first Hollywood film devoted solely to the history of a single record company. initially Matt Damon was scheduled to play Leonard Chess but pulled out leaving the role open for Adrien Brody who had received rave reviews for Polanski’s The Piano, and more recently provided a riveting performance as Italian mobster Luca Changretta in S4 of Peaky Blinders.
Whilst the film primarily focuses on the birth and growth of Chess Records set up by Jewish American music obsessives in 1940’s Chicago, it delivers a solid roster of Blues, Jazz and RnB characters.  Muddy Walters , Howlin Wolf , Chuck Berry and Little Walter .  Beyonce provided a stand out singing role as Etta James and her delivery of “At Last” saw the song reborn as an anthem to a whole new generation. Sadly it fell short of expectations to audiences and failed  to recoup the $12 million budget.  The soundtrack was nominated for 3 Grammys and Beyonce was invited to perform “At Last “at Barack Obama’s 2008 inauguration Ball.
Musical Highlight:
Beyonce’s sultry and pained delivery of the Etta James classic “‘At Last”.

Whats Love Got to Do With It. (1993)
Charting  Anna Mae Bullock’s journey from  the daughter of a Tennesse sharecropper raised by both her Mother and later Grandmother , before she morphed into Tina Turner after joining Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm band. Angela Bassett fought off strong contenders for the adult role including Halle Berry, Robin Givens, Pam Grier, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson. Laurence Fishburne took some persuading to take on the more toxic but challenging role of Ike Turner .Bassett delivers an outstanding performance on stage and off , Fishburne’s brooding menace and paranoia is also  totally convincing .Like others listed here the films release  was marked by a litany of alleged inaccuracies  , many of them around dates but some surrounding accusations of rape and the use of a prostitute hired by Ike to cover for Tina following childbirth. The film was nominated for 2 Academy Awards, Bassett won Golden Globe and NAACP awards .The film grossed   $56.4 million worldwide , but it provided something of far more value socially. The stark brutality and story of survival eclipsed the music content. The film and Tina Turner became a beacon world wide for womens safety and a need to address domestic abuse.  Ironically Tina was reported to be no more happier with the finished product than Ike , resenting the role of ‘Victim’.
Stand out line.
Tina is rushed to hospital in an ambulance after taking an overdose to escape Ike’s abuse. In the ambulance Ike leans over the unconscious Tina . “You got to Make it, if you don’t make it I’ll kill you”.
It can take a few minutes for the absurdity of that statement to sink it , and it serves to reinforce her plight and the extent of his control.
Scene stealer.
1976 Ike and Tina fly into Dallas ahead of a show. In the taxi to their hotel Ike inflicts a savage beating on Tina who    inspired by a conversion to Budism, has dared to challenge him. In the hotel room there is a 20 second silent clip of her staring at her puffed up and bruised face, before she takes the momentous decision to flee for good with 26 cents and no control over her name or songs.
Musical highlight .
The film opens with little Anna Mae Bullock’s attending a rural gospel church choir rehearsal. She delivers a version of the hymn with a raucous  passion that attracts frowns and eventually a reprimand from the choir leader. Anna Mae has clearly been influenced by the emerging  Rhythm and Blues and cannot help but to revert to a secular delivering which sees her led by the ear out of the church in shame but undiminished.

The Jacksons : An  American Dream (1992)   TV Mini Series
Put  together by Motown’s  film production company De Passe Entertainment  ( Lady Sings the Blues,   Mahogany , The Wiz ) with Jermaine named as co Producer. I have been a fan of some of The Jacksons material , but accept some of their conduct has been crass and abusive. So I didn’t  come to this with high hopes ,  but to be fair  most of it is no  worse than your average made for TV US family drama. It charts the families roots and development from  1940’s Gary, Indiana .Joe  Jackson is very  much the family tyrant , with numerous examples of the often alleged ( and often disputed ) physical and emotional abuse of the children.  Given Katherine was giving birth every 17 months for 16 years, clearly suggests she was no less a victim of Joe’s controlling nature. She’s played by Angela Bassett who does her best with a flakey script
.Jason Weaver delivers a credible Michael (aged 9 - 14) , but amidst a performing family of 9 , there is rarely enough space for anyone else’s character to develop in their headlong push to inevitable stardom demanded by their father. Part 2 inevitably focusses on Michael , but sadly at the expense of some quality releases  in their Epic years . Particularly their self named debut album crafted by Gamble and Huff in the Sigma studios. Instead the narrative skips ahead to the  legendary  Motown 25 Years in 1983. By now the tables have turned and Joe and Gordy have to plead  Michael to appear. You would think Motown might have concluded the story here , but they have to build in some cheesy statements of atonement by or on behalf of Joe delivered to Michael and his Chimp.
It attracted a TV audience of 38 million, prepared to ignore  the litany of alleged inaccuracies . Subsequent Emmy nominations restricted to choreography , hairstyling and sound mixing tells you something about the acting and script quality. It also saw a DVD and soundtrack release and at the time of writing is available for free on You Tube. One for the curious and the tolerant perhaps.

Musical Highlight :
Following the brothers pre contract performance in Chicago supporting Jackie Wilson. Grady Harrell delivers a passable version of JW delivering “Work Out” to a rapturous theatre audience , including legendary dance moves. Michael watching off stage is totally captivated and is seen copying Jackie’s slides and spins which will later be crafted for the MTV generation.
Scene Stealer
Having signed for Motown the band are in the recording studio accompanied by Joe, Michael is displaying excited curiosity about the mixing desk and is admonished by Joe who walks out as Berry Gordy arrives. Joe looks back to see Michael pestering Gordy with questions about the EQ dials, much to his father's displeasure. Joe Jacksons fearsome scowl provides clear recognition that he is slowly losing control over the boys and he’s helpless to prevent it.

The Temptations : TV Mini Series. : 1998
Like so many made for TV biographies this 2 part 3 hour production is rather glossy and shallow, yet in the absence of anything else on the Temp’s it's an absorbing and painful watch.   Based on Otis Williams biography and put together by Motown executives it whizzes through   the highs and lows of assorted line ups over   40 years . Needless to say Williams and Motown/Gordy come through unscathed . A stand out, but equally controversial role was Leon Robinsons gripping portrayal of David Ruffin, although most of the songs were delivered by a  Louis Price , who had a three year spell with a version of The Temptations in the the late seventies. It has a number of inaccuracies and triggered a number of (unsuccessful ) law suits from the families of Melvin Franklin and David Ruffin. Despite this its flaws it delivered ABC TV  45 million viewers , the director won an Emmy and it has since achieved success through a stage show, an album and sales of the DVD. At the time of writing the full series can be accessed for free on You Tube.

Musical Highlight :
December 1964 , 1964, members join the Williams family to watch the first TV airing of their new Smokey Robinson crafted single “My Girl”,  led by new member David Ruffin. Amidst the shouts of unbridled joy and pride the camera pans into the black and white TV shot and through the screen to see the group perform in colour in the studio. It was an instant classic and one of their signature tunes for years to come.

Funk Investigators Living The Dream

Most of us go through life essentially simply surviving, the dull reality of real life often puts paid to any dreams or aspirations that many of us have, the odd night out and drink at the weekend to break the monotony of real life, of work, bills, debts and the struggle to put food on the table and your kids don’t go without.  Often a cruel twist of fate can lead to an adventure that one doesn’t expect and gives you the kick needed to realise those dreams, no matter how unrealistic they may seem.  That is exactly what happened to Alberto upon receiving the news from Mr Giannetti about his termination of employment in 2014, a result of the recession affecting business worldwide.
For some of us music has been our escape from real life, working and living for the weekend, Soul Music, in particular Northern Soul has been a way of life for many.  A weekend spent dancing, digging through box after box of records with a desire to find rare obscure music neglected and rejected by the country of its origin, namely the USA, Deejaying, partying and more besides, all in the company of likeminded people initially from the four corners of the UK to eventually across Europe and then the world.  Friendships forged have lasted a lifetime.
It was Alberto’s love of Funk and Soul that upon finding himself unemployed began to realise a dream of finding unissued recordings and releasing them to the world through his own record label.

Funk Investigators is the story of how it all came to happen and in particular the story of one singer’s one minute 12 seconds of master tape recording that changed Alberto’s life and belatedly that of its composer.
It all began after Christmas of 2014 and the planning of a trip that would change Alberto’s life.  The itinerary of a nine-day trip was plotted, the many years in business became evident as the planning was professional, thorough and meticulous.  Every detail scrutinised, nothing left to chance.
Flights were booked, cars hired, motel rooms for overnight stops booked.  Contacts were made and meetings arranged with those who could help with his quest to find unissued masters.  Firstly, in a small town in New Jersey to meet Elmore Jackson, former singer, songwriter and studio engineer who recounted his story to Alberto and gave him an insight to the workings of the music industry.
Visiting his friend Bard Hales in Detroit and the finding of the master tape for the song that would propel Alberto’s label to a newfound fame and pave the way for success that has seen over 50 releases to date.
He recounts the avenues taken to find Big Lee Dowel and those who helped along the way, Professor Albert Aubrey (Director Detroit Afro-American History Detroit University), Marsha Williams at the Detroit Public Library and Eddie Delgado at the Bronx Library Centre.  The chance meeting of a group of church goers who knew Big Lee and his family and subsequently finding Big Lee Dowell himself.
Then there is Alberto’s friend Aleksy who helped turn the part recording into a full recording, taking the 1 minute 12 seconds tape track consisting of the intro, one verse one chorus then one more verse.  After some cutting and stitching adding instrumental bridge, they had a 3-minute 8 seconds song.
Everything is told in detail, not so great as to overwhelm the reader though, it is remarkably a very easy read, and the book is hard to put down once picked up.  Alberto’s life on the road in business is evident, the daydreaming, those who spend time on the road will understand this, it helps break up the boring reality of mile after mile of dull tarmac!  Alberto is clearly a people watcher and a very good judge of character.  His observations of life around him, the social history related to give context and an understanding of his surroundings helping to paint a perfect picture of his journey and carrying the reader along with him.  There is also a glimpse in the book not just into Alberto’s early life at school and how a young Mod named Andreas turned Alberto away from mid 80s British pop to American Soul and Funk and but also Alberto’s family life.
Funk Investigators is not just one man’s story, his drive to discover unreleased material upon this remarkable scene we all share a deep passion for, but it is the story of a team and the part they played no matter how small in bringing the music to the world.
There are many reasons why an artist and a recording never made it, even beyond the studio, lying dormant in the vaults for decades.  Whilst we have labels like Cannonball though, these artists and their recordings are at last finding the respect and the audience they deserve.
If you are quick, you might pick up a copy of the book from one of the stockists, but worry not, a reprint is due in the autumn.

New Cannonball Records & Tesla Groove 45s - Out Now 5 (2+3) x 45s!

Here we go, news all about the two most recent releases from Cannonball Records and Tesla Groove International and 3 delayed 45s
First off we have two quality 45s, one featuring two 'The Words Of Wisdom' tracks from a restoration project the other featuring 'King Bee' with a more contemporary remix and rework project that hits the mark.
Also now out and about are 3 more fresh 45s that were originally due out in May 2021 but got caught up in the recent pressing plant delays. Steve Mancha, Gail Lou, Coco Collier being the artists involved.
So that's 5 x fresh 45s in total, and with each of the 45s being released as a limited shrink-wrapped picture sleeve edition of just 250, there may be a need to step lively if your interest is stirred
Details of all the five 45s follow below...

CBLL035 - THE WORDS OF WISDOM  “You Got Me Smiling” b/w “Just Another Face”
Support The Words of Wisdom and bring home one of the last slices of original soul from Napptown's legacy.
Release Notes
It all started when Herman “Butch” Slaughter at 12 years old asks his parents for a professional tape recording machine for Christmas. Butch’s technical training in music came from him being First Chair/First Chair Baritone in the the school choir. He started to write song poems and dreamed the day he would hear his songs on the radio. He had several attempts at putting a group together eventually leading to the creation of The Words of Wisdom with Karen Slaughter, Robert “Buck” Vaughn, Rosa Lunderman and Mabel Heart. They started earning some good popularity at the crossing of the seventies and eighties although experienced some quick lineup changes until they disbanded in 1982. Stable artists at the legendary Lamp - the so called “Naptown’s Motown” - these guys were part of the sparkling funk soul scene of Indianapolis alongside the likes of The Vanguards and The Fabulous Souls. Writer, producers, studio owners involved in these recordings all passed away except Herman Slaughter, founder member of the band and a blasting dj still active on his scene to these times. The recordings presented on this release went lost until 2 years ago. It’s been necessary a massive audio repair/restoration, hope you will appreciate the job we’ve done with them.
VIVA NAPTOWN!

TSL013 - KING BEE “Bee To the Flower” b/w “Bingeries”
Exciting times lay ahead!
Release Notes
Contemporary hard driven Jazz Funk from the north of England. Bee To The Flower, initially released under the influence of Newcastle’s finest Warren Thompson in a much slower and kind of stepped down version has been rearranged and recorded again by the band expressly for Tesla Groove International at the Loft Studios. We have been on this project for a long while and the biggest thing we blame covid for is the goddamn delay it forced into the development of artistic projects, of which the physical final release is only the latest of the steps. Driving (and very creative) basslines, a beautiful and almost psychedelic Fender Rhodes intercalate with a vibraphone played with such a mastery I could only remind of the great Pharoah Sanders at the time of his performances with Lonnie Liston Smith and Nathaniel Betties, one of the greatest afro percussionists of all times. All of this on such a hitting drumming I just can’t wait to fire it out of a proper sound system. Created in 2011 by north-east based Dave Wilde and Chris Jelly, the original jazz/funk fusion sounds of this seven piece Newcastle based band have carved a niche as some of the finest exponents of the genre in the UK. The band has given exciting dance inducing live performances up and down the country, at Band on the Wall, Hoochie Coochie and many more, supporting the likes of Craig Charles, Roy Ayers and Lonnie Liston Smith along the way. New material has been in the making for quite a while, but after the enforced lockdown, King Bee are ready to release their latest recordings at long last. Worth waiting for.
Exciting times lay ahead!

More Cannonball Records and Tesla Groove International Release 45s now available
Vinyl pressing delays also caused delays to these three 45s which were originally planned for an earlier release in May 2021

Steve Mancha - That's Why I Love you - 3 tracks - Cannonball Records
At the dawn of ’66 Don Davis welcomed a disappointed Clyde Wilson after his multiple failures with Motown and pushed him to change his artist’s name in Steve Mancha as “see, Clyde Wilson ain’t really cutting the pie”. The demo take of “That’s Why I Love You” was recorded within the Detroit - Memphis workflow alongside several other cuts which never saw the light of the day.

Gail Lou - I Still Love - Tesla Groove International
A pumping ground-to-air dance missile written and produced at the dawn of the new century by a duo with some huge music background. Hailing from Montclair State University, Gail Lou is an acclaimed performer, musical director and vocal coach. Her vocal performances in Tri-State’s recording sector, as both lead singer and background vocalist, span from R&B, Gospel, Jazz, to Soul and electronic Dance. Alongside Shawn Lucas, who’s the behind-the-scene producer of the duo, she’s been laying down compositions for music releases and opera and theatre shows soundtracks. Written and produced by Gail Lou and Shawn V. Lucas, Executive Producers Alberto Zanini & Yann Vatiste

Coco Collier - Here Comes the Rain - Tesla Groove International
The amazing singer from our best-selling artists duo The Swans of New England delivers this stunning soul take on the Eurhythmics classic Here Comes the Rain from the 80’s givin’ evidence that soul music can turn everything from average limestone bricks to precious gold bars. Of course it was necessary to provide Coco’s vocals with the right arrangement but it’s just a slight contribution to the development of this very Tesla Groove fashioned sound exploration. Sure this experiment will kind of shock some of you but in all honesty we are all about takin’ on new paths of discovery.

End word

Ace Records August 2021 News

Latest release news from Ace Records
Out now
Choctaw Ridge - New Fables of The American South 1968-1973
Country
Various Artists (Saint Etienne)
CD £11.50
The huge success of Bobbie Gentry’s ‘Ode To Billie Joe’ in 1967 helped a bunch of southern singers and storytellers to emerge over the next three or four years who were just outside country’s traditional range. Their voices were resonant and relatable. If Nashville’s countrypolitan rule-makers didn’t want to know about the muddy waters under the Tallahatchie Bridge, it hardly mattered – these records created a golden era for an atmospheric, inclusive and progressive country music. Compiled by Bob Stanley and Martin Green.
Thinking About The Good Times - Complete Recordings 1964-1966
Girls
Goldie & the Gingerbreads
CD £11.50
GOLDIE & THE GINGERBREADS were the advance guard for every female rock musician that has come since – a fabulous quartet with chops and soul in equal measure, who blew minds on both sides of the Atlantic. Their complete recordings are gathered here for the first time, with much unreleased material and a heavily illustrated history of this pioneering outfit.
Deep Pockets
Blues
Dana Gillespie
CD £11.50
"Deep Pockets”, the follow-up to 2019’s “Under My Bed”, is a collection of 12 Gillespie originals, mostly written with long-standing lead guitarist Jake Zaitz. Exquisite modern blues.
Coming soon

Good Good Feeling! More Motown Girls
60s Soul
Various Artists (Motown)
CD £12.92

Another helping of 60s Motown magic from the company’s stable of female talent – many tracks previously available only as digital downloads, and six unreleased in any format.
Splendido! The Italian Singles Collection
Pop
Petula Clark
CD £17.75
Her complete Italian singles, including many songs recorded exclusively in that language. Released with the approval and involvement of Petula herself, the two discs come in a six-panel digipak which also houses a bumper 32-page booklet featuring notes by Bob Stanley incorporating an exclusive interview with Petula, detailed track annotations, ten gorgeous full-page colour photos and a plethora of other rare illustrations.

Psychedelic Soul - Produced By Norman Whitfield
Modern Soul
Various Artists (Producer Series)
CD £12.92
One of the most wildly original producers of his age, Norman Whitfield took the Motown sound away from four-to-the-floor towards something more spacious and atmospheric. With the Temptations, and later the Undisputed Truth and Rose Royce, he created darkly beautiful soul music, selling millions of records along the way. Thanks to its heavy use of echo and wah-wah pedals, his sound was tagged “psychedelic soul”.

The Stars Of Dore EP
60s Soul
Various Artists (Dore)
7" £10.68
Continuing our featured US labels series of EPs, we come to the Los Angeles enigma that was Doré – they went from comedy to pop to rock and eventually to some amazingly good soul. This “Stars Of” EP features singles from four top vocal groups.

New Soul Direction 45 - The Decisions - Out Soon

Latest 45 from Soul Direction The Decisions – “We’re In Love / I Love You” – Soul-Direction SD-005
We are pleased to present our next new release:
The Decisions – “We’re In Love / I Love You” – Soul-Direction SD-005
Release date Late July/Early August 2021

The Decisions are a group from Atlanta, Georgia comprising of Hildred Thomason, Fred White, Henry Little and Howard Simpson and Harvey Poole. Harvey Poole went on to join the US Military.
They formed at S.H. Archer High School and graduated in 1965.  Over the years these 5 young men went on to start their own Record Label – York Records in the late 60s. They were one of Billboard’s hottest male singing groups to look out for in and around the Georgia area but were gaining success further afield.
After two releases for the local self-owned “York” label in 1968, they then signed for “Sussex” records in the early 1970’s for the Los Angeles based label. Under the leadership of Clarence Avant and cut three more 45s. While with Sussex Records they continued with their unique Atlanta sound that shocked the recording industry and had some success with releases that included "I Can't Forget About You" & Stop Playing Around".
Both these tracks are from an almost lost master tape that was sent to a LA music executive in 1968 by the group but was sadly never returned.  The tracks recorded in 1968 and would have been a possible release for the bands own label "York Records".

Group Members:  Fred White, Harvey Pool, Hildred Thomason, Henry Little, Howard Simpson.  Hildred Thomason is sadly no longer with us.
Discography:
Really Do Love You - York – 158 Written - By Fred White
Do I Love Her Written - By Fred White
Color Me Blue - York – 159 Written-By – Fred White
Somebody Written-By – Fred White

Essential Modern Soul News

Some of you might remember the Essential Modern Soul forum which began as an email list back in 1999. It moved to an internet discussion board in 2005 and carried on that way for around 11 years. The forum abruptly disappeared  after the board host switched their servers off, and that was that. Anyhow, we set a new board up as a trial a few years ago but didn’t go wide with the news and it faltered. This time, we’re trying again and we’re looking for new members so, if you fancy it, hop on over to https://essentialmodernsoul.freeforums.net. A place to chat about new and old music, share podcasts, radio shows, sales and wants and a bit of idle chit chat. We look forward to welcoming you, if you’re that way inclined.
Thanks for reading this far.
Cheers and hope to see you there.

Amy Winehouse: A Personal Tribute .

This week sees the 10th anniversary of the death of  Amy Winehouse. I thought she deserved a personal tribute on these pages. Whilst she won’t be everyone’s taste it would be hard not to ignore her impact and achievements .

Amy’s Roots
Amy’s roots were forged in the migration of her great great Grandfather  from Minsk , Belarus to Londons East End in the 1890’s . By the time Amy was born in 1983 the family had settled , with many other  East End Jewish families in the North London suburb of Southgate.  Father Mitch was a Black Cab driver despite an early divorce he became an influential figure in her later career.Amy’s  musical legacy was forged by a number of uncles who were Jazz musicians but more so by her paternal Grandmother Cynthia who  the young Amy adored.

Pictures of Cynthia and Amy showing startling similarities.

Cynthia, occasional Jazz singer , dated legendary club owner Ronnie Scott . Legend has it Amy  grew up hearing her Dad and Cynthia deliver Frank Sinatra Jazz standards in the house, but she has also cited her love of Salt and Pepper and The Beastie Boys. This fusion of both retro classics and contemporary sounds was to be her hallmark and path to success. Cynthia provided far more than musical influence , she was flamboyant , and something of a mystic absorbed by Tarot cards and the fragility  of fate and destiny .
By the age of 12 Amy had bought her own guitar and was writing songs.  Her influences  were never merely cited retrospectively to appear hip, evidenced by details of an early ‘Chill Out ‘ cassette tape. It includes the often cited Ella Fitzgerald , Frank Sinatra , Carol King   but also Ray Charles  Curtis Mayfield  Edwin Star . She was encouraged by Cynthia to attend drama schools . At 17  she became the featured female vocalist with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and by the age of 19 she has signed to Simon Fullers 19 Management, and began a long working relationship with Producer Salaam Remi. The buzz about Amy triggered keen interest from a number of major labels , but Island Records A and R man Darcus Beese acting on a tip off sealed a deal that was to secure the release of her debut album Frank in 2003.

Blues and Soul magazine feature following the release of Frank.
Much of it had been written whilst Amy was still a teenager , it provided a credible debut of Neo Soul over a mix of drum and base and mellow Jazz. Whilst it won an Ivor Novello award , was shortlisted for a Mercury  prize and reached platinum sales it was only a shade of what was to come. Amy performed at Glastonbury , V Festival and Montreal Jazz festival  to promote an album she was often self critical of .
Back to Black
Co producer on her debut album had been Salaam Remi whose previous work had included The Fugees, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes  and Ms Dynamite. This collaboration continued for the follow up Back to Black album which saw her travel to New York and Miami to work with British born legendary director Mark Ronson . Amy developed a close working relationship with both men , and also the Dapp Kings who were brought  in work on the album which provided a shift away from Jazz towards sixties soul and girl groups , with additional elements of Neo Soul, modern blues and ska .Both men have admitted that Amy was not the easiest person to work with , and it took some coaxing and a high degree of trust for her to accept changes in production.
They produced  album made of ten  songs that average three minutes with 5 of the nine songs are under 3 mins. Amy poured out her sorrow and frustration in a style that was both sultry and agonising at the same time. The songs were marked by references to soul idols (Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway) sexual frustration  and the contradictory emotions in modern relationships . It drew on Motown , Neo Soul and   Billie Holiday’s legacy. Whilst Amy’s voice was never  ever going to compete with Aretha or Glady’s it was by any standards a Soulful album.  Completed  within five months it was destined to become a modern classic  It barely had a weak track and was to provide  5 singles within a year . Musically Rehab was ironically the most commercial and was on everybody’s lips and radios world wide, a cruel irony given that Amy was never more in need of rehab at the time . It reached the UK and US top ten in October 2006.  It was followed by You Know Im No Good ,  Back to Black, Tears Dry on their own , and prophetically Love is a Losing Game. A cynical mind might feel Island were milking a talent that wasn’t destined to shine for long.By the end of 2011 it had sold 3.5 million copies in the UK and 20 million worldwide and award ceremonies  couldn’t get enough of Amy and the Back to Black team. The Brits’s , Mercury , Rolling Stone Magazine , and 5 Grammys’ all took a chance on giving her a an acceptance speech.
Amy’s Decline

Within the next 2 years a catalyst  of events would combine to result in a Amy’s drift towards self destruction. There had been rumours of mood swings and depression as a child and school exclusions which were denied. There is a stark warning in a statement from Amy to camera in the posthumous 2015 film Amy about her inability to handle fame and attention. Her early manager and friend Nicky Shymansky  later disclosed  to Daily Telegraph journalistJessamy  Calkin :
‘It was around February 2005, in the space of a week, everything changed. I called her, and she sounded different. I remember saying to my brother, “Something weird is going on. Amy doesn’t sound like Amy.”‘That was the week she met Blake Fielder-Civil. She  changed overnight."
He reportedly  admitted to introducing her to Class A Drugs , then broke off their relationship to return to an existing  girlfriend. Whilst Amy never hid her  frequent use - or dependency of Canabis and Alcohol she was reported as chanting  ‘Class A drugs are for mugs’ at the beginning of her shows prior to meeting Fielder - Civil . Amy’s family and fans have pointed to the death of her beloved grandmother Cynthia in May 2006 as a trigger for her  emotional decline.Amy Winehouse and Fielder-Civil married secretly in Florida in May 2007
Their relationship  was marked by co dependency , binge sessions , violent break ups and emotional make ups between the two. They were divorced within two years, but by this time Amy appeared in full decline . Ive chosen not to detail the sad gory details of her personal decline which were captured almost gleefully by a tabloid press. She died alone on 23rd July 2011 aged 27  , and the inquest reported blood alcohol levels as  .416 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood with readings of over 400 likely to lead to lead to a coma and death.

Amy’s Legacy:

Ahead of her death there were hopes of her delivering a song for a new James Bond song ,and also rumours of a Ska album.Amy Winehouse was one of a long line of white  UK female singers who have embraced Soul music and  delivered it with passion, respect and integrity. She  belongs on that list along with Dusty , Lisa Stansfield , Joss Stone. There is no doubt Amy inspired countless singers to follow her , with Adele and Duffy among them.  Emile Sande, Sam Smith and Paloma Faith are among  many who have also cited her influence. You might not have wanted her for a neighbour , your daughters best friend or your sons new girlfriend, but in a music scene dominated by X Factor clones it was hard not to admire her raw energy.Amy sealed the bond that so many performers and artists in this country have with Soul music in all its forms. Its passion  gripped her and she felt it no less than any of us who have taken to the floors of an all niter.  RIP.

Book - Love Factory: The History of Holland Dozier Holland by Howard Priestley

Details of a new Motown/Detroit related book out now...
Love Factory: The History of Holland Dozier Holland by Howard Priestley
It has long been acknowledged that Berry Gordy Jr and his Motown Empire put Detroit on the International musical map but it was the creative genius of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland who would take the sound into uncharted territory. In this book Howard Priestley explores in depth the story of the three friends, their meteoric rise to fame and their fall from the heights. How they helped to put Detroit Soul on the map and the series of events that saw the collapse of not only the recognised sound of Detroit but Soul in general as the 70s gave way to a more collective sound away from the diversity of Memphis, Philadelphia, Chicago, Miami and, of course, Detroit. Priestley writes in both an entertaining and analytical way that reminds us just how many songs the trio have composed that have become an important and enduring part of the soundtrack to so many of our lives.
