New: The Delights - Listen To Me Girl - Soul Junction

Press Release: The Delights   “Listen To Me Girl b/w Tearra   “Just Loving You “   SJ1008
Release Date: Monday March 6th 2017
The Delights “Listen To Me Girl” was a previously unissued Philadelphia recording.
That has been licensed from the stable of veteran record producer Emanuel (Manny) Campbell Jr. Although the track has been featured on one of Manny’s Coastal records cd projects this is the first time that this track has received a release on a vinyl format.

The Delights consisted of four male singers. With two of them being Manny’s cousins, brothers Keith “Toppie” (the eldest) and Ellis Hill, their cousin Jaime Hill plus a teenage friend of theirs. The lead singer was a girl by the name of Peaches. All aged between 16 to 17 years old and all from Chester, Pennsylvania. They had all gained valuable experience singing with other groups individually as backing singers on early recording sessions for the likes of the O‘Jay’s, Delfonic’s and Stylistics’.
With a family connection to Manny Campbell it was inevitable that they would eventually feature on some of his production sessions, with the Nu-Ron’s “All Of My Life/I’m A Loser” (Nu-Ron 1060) being one of them. Manny gathered them together to form a vocal group of their own under the group name of ‘The Delights’ (not to be confused with the group who recorded the song ‘Lover’ on Cuppy).

Entering the recording studio under Manny’s tutelage during the months of July and August of 1968 they recorded the delightful (pardon the pun) crossover soul dance track “Listen To Me Girl”. This is believed to be their only completed recording session.  With them being so young and somewhat unruly they were never able to complete the project’s Manny had in mind for them. “Listen To Me Girl” was composed by Manny and Charles J. Bowen a fellow Philadelphian, musician and composer, Charles’s writing credits can be found on many of Manny’s other productions with The Rotations “If I Could Be Like Columbus Where Would We Be/Don’t Ever Hurt Me Girl” (Law-Ton 1550) being a very fine example. In 1975 The Delights, now more grown up and under the management of a guy called Bryant did go on to record two excellent 45’s for the Phil-L.A Of Soul label. Firstly “It’s As Simple As That/I’ve Got Enough Sense” (PH-374) both sides of which are two excellent sweet soul ballads. Followed a year later by the up tempo “Face The Music/Things Ain’t What They Used To Be” (PH-379). All of their Phil-L.A Of Soul sides were written by Morris Bailey Jr.

Tearra’s “Just Loving You” through the importation of copies into the UK became popular with the exponents of the modern soul genre eventually crossing over to find favour with the more open minded members of the Northern Soul scene. Now regarded as one of the corner stone anthem’s of the modern soul genre this 45 is still a highly sought after item. Tearra had been born Teah Louise in Mobile Alabama.

During the early to mid 1970’s Manny Campbell began spending more of his time in Atlanta GA. Finally making it his permanent home during 1979, the same year that he set up his Emandolynn Music studios, with Teah joining him  very soon after.

During 1980, Manny offered Teah the chance to record a prospective new album entitled ‘Great Love’ and subsequently released two lead 45 singles from the project on her. Firstly under her real name of Teah-Louise the disco influenced “You Happened To Me/Got To Keep You Mine’ (Coastal-1002) followed by the second 45 “Ooh Let This Feeling (Last A Long, Long Time) backed with the desirable “Just Loving You” (Midtown 1001) with Midtown, by then being Coastal’s main record distributor.

This second release appeared under the artist name of Tearra, due to Teah Louise by now not wishing to use her real name. Both the Coastal and Midtown releases were only ever pressed in 500 promotional copies runs with the anticipated ‘Great Love’ album project unfortunately never being completed.  The reason being due to Teah’s sudden marriage and shortly after leaving the recording business at her new husband’s request.

A later 12” Coastal Records single issued on the group ‘Tomorrows Wish’ features the song “My Love For You” which too shares the same backing track as Tearra’s “Just Loving You”.

Incidentally the co-writer with Manny Campbell on Tearra’s “Ooh Let This Feeling (Last A Long, Long Time)” song happens to be cousin and former Delight member Keith “Toppie” Hill.

The Story - Inspirations - No One Else Can Take Your Place

Joey Jefferson is a well known producer and label owner that released many excellent 60s soul sides. Breakthrough & Mutt & Jeff are two of Joey’s labels that are of the most interest to Rare & Northern Soul collectors. The most highly sought after 45 on Breakthrough is of course by “No One Else Can Take Your Place” by the Inspirations.  Over the years myths and misinformation has surrounded the recording.  Johnny Hendley who recorded solo on Mutt & Jeff and later on TIE as John & The Weirdest is just one. He was reputedly the lead singer with the Inspirations.  However, during a recent trip Stateside by Kev Roberts who met once more with Joey this myth was dispelled once and for all.

The line up of the Inspirations, an LA vocal group, consisted of John Gibson who sang lead. Other members include brothers Huey and Lou Bell plus Charles Perry who was on MGM/Magnum, Charles Diamond (real name Charles Pennywell) was also in the studio doing backing and as we will find out he was soon to cut his own take. This line up was confirmed to Kev by Joey in a recent conversation.  The group went into the studio and recorded the track sometime in 1966.  The group however were courted by Motown’s West Coast office and they refused to sign a contract with Joey. With just a few 45s escaping and the group in dispute with Joey over a contact the recording was pulled and consigned to the vaults.

The Fairlanes
Charles “Diamond” Pennywell was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, the third largest city in Louisiana after New Orleans and Baton Rouge.  The city has a rich musical history from soul to gospel, R&B to country and much more and was the home for many of music’s major acts.  Charles was also a childhood friend of Joey Jefferson who would have a part to play in the future musical career of Charles. Charles began singing at the age of ten.  It would be high school where he began to take it seriously.  Along with fellow school friends, Eddie Lejay, Thomas Odom, Steve Ross they formed the The Fairlanes, named after the Ford Fairlane and keeping with the doo-wop tradition of naming the group after cars, The Cadilacs etc.  The group’s first release in 1959 was to be Seventeen Steps” b/w “Johnny Rhythm” came out on Dee Marais’ Lucky Seven label and in the same year for Pappy Dailey’s Dart label out of Houston, TX (Just For Me).  They would also record for Eddie Shuler's Tic-Toc label (You’re Lonesome Now) in 1961.  Charles would record solo for Smash with “Web Of Love” b/w “It’s So Funny I Could Cry”.

Charles as mentioned was doing backing vocals in the studio whilst the Inspirations cut their take or takes of “No One Else Can Take Your Place”.  It is highly likely Charles Diamond cut his take during the same session, if not the same session it would be very soon after.

Alas, Joey Jefferson would lose interest in the recording and it would be shelved. Charles Diamond, soon after laying down his vocals to “No One Else Can Take Your Place”  would become a member and sing lead vocals for the vocal group The Sunlovers and whose members would be Eddie LaJay who was a member of the Failanes alongside Charles and childhood friend and Robert Tisby. I have read a conflicting biography that the groups members were also those that recorded as The Inspirations.  If this is true then I guess Joey didn’t bear a grudge, not when money was to be made through music.  I find this unlikely due to the dispute over a recording contract the Inspirations had with Joey.  The line up of Charles, Eddie and Robert came from an interview conducted with Charles a few years ago.

The Sunlovers
It would be the Sunlovers and his other label interests that would be the focus of Joey’s productions and “The Inspirations and “No One Else Can Take Your Place” was for the foreseeable future history.  The Sunlovers would record for amongst others Joey’s Mutt & Jeff label. “My Poor Heart”. was the first release in June 1967  “You’ll Never Make The Grade” came next and “I’ll Treat You Right” being the third and final release on Mutt & Jeff.  None did anything nationally despite selling regionally.  The first two would however become popular on the UK Northern Soul scene in later years alongside the Breakthrough release by the Inspirations and other releases by Joey Jefferson.
When asked most collectors and dancers remember first hearing the record via Colin Curtis at the legendary Blackpool Mecca.  This copy however belonged to Neil Rushton.  Neil purchased it for £32, two weeks wages, blind from Bob Cattaneo of San Francisco.  This was the first copy to arrive in the UK and Neil as well as playing it himself at venues such as The Ritz in Manchester would take it to the Mecca for Colin to play, this would be late 1973 or 1974 according to various memories. Some years later, whilst the disc was still a one known copy 45, Neil would sell the record to Ritchie Andrew of Wales for £120, something Neil regretted.
Meanwhile, Bob Cattaneo had been in contact with Joey and during the conversations it transpired Joey still had the masters for “No One Else Can Take Your Place”.  Bob relayed this to Neil and a deal was struck through Bob to get 1000 pressed up, this was 1977. However, when the records arrived in the UK Neil was bemused that it was not the same as the record he had bought from Bob and played around the UK but a totally different take.  It transpired that Joey had used the vocal recorded by Charles Diamond and not the original Inspirations take.  It was though an excellent recording in its own right and all copies have now disappeared into collections and when one does come up for sale it is now commanding a three figure sum.  The Inspirations though has never turned up with just a few known copies and commanding a figure of several thousand pounds.

As for Johnny Hendley, his whereabouts are unknown although Joey is actively attempting to locate him.
Charles Pennywell would continue to record into the 70s and is still touring to this day with his band.
Special thanks to Kev Roberts, Charles Pennywell and Joey Jefferson.
Thanks also to Classic Urban Harmony.

New Release: Teakwood - A Distant Star LP

It is a rare occurrence, especially when you consider that we are writing this in the year 2017, that an unreleased soul/disco album from the 1970s surfaces after 40 years. The Tramp crew first heard about the album while discussing the re-release of Teakwood's sole 45RPM single release “Can You Dig It?” with former band leader and founding member of the group, Fred Forsh.
It was in 1972 when two new Berry College freshmen met and realized that they were both music majors which led to an impromptu jam session in the lower level of the student center. This was the beginning of what would soon become Teakwood. “Those two original members, Ralph Moore on saxophone and me on piano, along with five others went into the studio in 1976 and recorded two songs for our first and only single”, remembers Fred Forsh. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, Moore and Forsh parted ways but Teakwood continued with four remaining members plus two new ones and with this new lineup, went into the studio in 1977 to record nine songs under the collective title “A Distant Star”. However, for some obscure reason the songs were never released but luckily the reel-to-reel master tapes survived.
The tapes were sent to the head quarters of Tramp Records in early 2016. In the end it took several attempts at three different recording studios to transfer them successfully. It took some more months to get the material mastered and finally pressed on good old vinyl. Mr. Forsh says: “Here we are, forty years later, finally releasing it to the public thanks to Tramp Records! This is a dream come true for me and it is my hope that you will enjoy listening to the music of Teakwood!” Happy New Year 2017!

Bobby Freeman RIP

Just had the sad news highlighted by member @Rick Cooper that Bobby Freeman passed on 28th January 2017 in Anson, Texas, U.S.A.
Robert Thomas "Bobby" Freeman (June 13, 1940 – January 2017)
Freeman was born in Alameda County and raised in San Francisco, California. He attended Mission High School.[4] He started singing in a doo-wop group, the Romancers, in his early teens, and first recorded with them for Dootone Records in 1956. Their recordings included "House Cat", included on several later rock and roll compilations. However, the group soon fell apart, and Freeman started a new group, the Vocaleers (not to be confused with an earlier group of the same name who recorded "Is It a Dream").
When asked by a local DJ if he had written any songs, he wrote several and recorded them as solo demos. These included "Do You Want to Dance", which were heard by a visiting record label executive, Mortimer Palitz of Jubilee Records. He signed Freeman to the label and had the original recording overdubbed in New York by session musicians including guitarist Billy Mure. Released on the Jubilee subsidiary label Josie, "Do You Want to Dance" quickly rose to number 5 on the pop chart and number 2 on the R&B chart in early 1958, when Freeman was still only 17 The song was covered later (as "Do You Wanna Dance") by Del Shannon, the Beach Boys, Johnny Rivers, Bette Midler, John Lennon, Cliff Richard, Marc Bolan & T.Rex, the Mamas & The Papas, Bobby Vee and the Ramones.
Freeman appeared on American Bandstand and toured with such musicians as Fats Domino, the Coasters, and Jackie Wilson. Several of his follow-ups on Laurie, including "Betty Lou Got a New Pair of Shoes" and "Need Your Love", a ballad, also made the pop charts. He left Laurie in 1960 and signed with King Records, reaching the charts again with "Shimmy Shimmy".However, several of Freeman's later recordings for King in the early 1960s went unreleased, for unexplained reasons.

He did not return to the charts again until 1964, after signing for the Autumn label, when he had his second top ten hit with "C'mon and Swim". The song was co-written by label owner and radio DJ Tom Donahue (credited under his birth name, Thomas Coman), and 20-year-old Sylvester Stewart, later known as Sly Stone, and was produced by Stewart. Freeman's final hit was "S-W-I-M", later in 1964.

Maxine Brown One In A Million - 5 Takes Found

This little project I am involved in just gets better and better, doing a little work with the One-derful masters I have discovered 5 takes of Maxine Brown - One In A Million, how and why we have this tape is a complete mystery to me however One-derful did distribute for other labels so it may have found it's way to Chicago way back somehow, it's simply just under half an hour of soul history, I contacted Ady Crosdell regarding this as soon as I found them, as good as the find is there is nothing we can place it with at Secret Stash so I have hooked up my direct boss with Ady so they can discuss if there is any commercial use for this find, all I can say is the 5 takes are beautiful, it's like she is finding her way with the track, hairs on the back of the neck time for sure, also the good thing in all this with Ady being personal friends with Maxine I'm pretty sure she will get to hear the tape, has to be a one in a million find sorry I could not resist that.

David Axelrod Interview From Big Daddy Online

The recent sad news regarding David Axelrods passing on has led to Wax Poetics magazine site pushing out a turn of the century interview from the Big Daddy Magazine Issue #5
Part one of the interview can be viewed here and as still as worthwhile as when first read well worth the walk over...

David Axelrod’s life is sensational. Forget for a minute that the man produced some of the finest R&B and jazz albums of the 1960s for luminaries such as Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderley. Forget Axelrod the visionary who, long before Shadow and his sampling contemporaries “endtroduced” themselves to the musical world, created the blueprint for classical melodies melded with the funkiest of backbeats. This interview would be worth reading for the intense anecdotes that characterize David Axelrod’s life.

Its a 3 xCd / 5x lp /digital format release, details and release notes below
The Men In The Glass Booth Part One: Ground Breaking Re-edits & Remixes By The Disco Era's Most Influential DJs
They describe in the release details this release as 'opulent', well you could call the sampler 'opulent' as well....as its a opulent lengthy 45 mins of fun....
Listen
Release Blurb...
In May 1976 a record was released that would have an unforeseen and lasting impact on the music industry “Ten Percent” by Double Exposure was an early release on the New York independent label Salsoul Records. America was in the grip of a disco explosion with new clubs opening on a weekly basis; Salsoul saw what was happening and swiftly created a sound for their label, heavily influenced by the music then coming out of Philadelphia, aimed directly at New York’s dance-floors. Records like “Salsoul Hustle,” “Tangerine” and “You’re Just The Right Size” by The Salsoul Orchestra borrowed heavily from the beautifully orchestrated Philadelphia International records but added a more percussive, bass heavy depth that New York’s DJs loved.
So what was so special about this particular single then? Double Exposure was, after all, just another band, “Ten Percent” just another song; one of many “disco” records released that week. First of all Salsoul became the first record label to make a twelve inch single available to Joe Public - the exotic format was previously only available to DJs as promotional items or bought under the counter at certain record stores. Not only that though, the extended version was created by Walter Gibbons, a DJ at New York’s Galaxy 21 who’d built his reputation making exclusive versions of tracks to play in his sets.
In 1976 it was unheard of for a DJ to set foot in a recording studio, being seen as little more than living jukeboxes by the serious music industry. Recording studios were strictly the domain of recording artists and producers so Walter found himself in a unique position, gaining access to a world no DJ had been granted before.
The Men In The Glass Booth compiled by Al Kent tells the full story. Featuring ground breaking re-edits and remixes by some of the Disco era’s most influential DJs including Walter Gibbons, Bobby DJ Guttadaro, Tom Savarese, Jellybean Benitez, Tee Scott and John Luongo, this opulent release also includes a 40 page book which features exclusive photos and insights from some of the story’s key figures.

Manhattan Soul Volume 3 - A New Kent Records release

News and details concerning this just released Kent Records soul comp. Read and listen below
Manhattan Soul Volume 3 - Various Artists (Scepter/ Wand)

Preview via Juno Records Player

Preview release notes clip and track listing
These New York labels were at the inception of soul music and continued to release excellent tracks until the disco era.
Scepter/Wand and Musicor/Dynamo were quintessential New York soul labels. Their common link was Luther Dixon, who set Scepter on the right path with the Shirelles and followed up with success for Tommy Hunt, Chuck Jackson, Dionne Warwick and Maxine Brown. He split for Musicor in 1966 where he got the Platters, Tommy Hunt and Inez and Charlie Foxx back into the charts.
Over the years, our privileged position of accessing the labels’ tapes has enabled us to make many previously unissued recordings available. This CD alone features an unheard Chips Moman song from Helen Henry, the Shirelles’ take on Luther Dixon’s superb ‘Two Stupid Feet’, songwriter Van McCoy’s own interpretation of the Shirelles’ ‘What’s The Matter Baby’ and an R&B group sound from the Tabs. Earlier vault discoveries from Junior Lewis and Big Maybelle are given their first CD outing.
Track Listing:
  1. Open Up Your Heart (And Let Me In) - Dan & Clean Cuts
  2. Now That You're Gone - Sonny Turner And Sound Unlimited
  3. Haven't I Been Good To You - Johnny Moore

Release blurb
Having anthologized his ’60s songbook with 1976’s overdue long-player Positive-Negative, Grand Rapids, Michigan's Tommy McGee was eager to place something more modern into the marketplace. Brass at Brunswick and MCA failed to hear a hit in McGee's sultry-yet-assured delivery of “Now That I Have You.” Unable to find a home for the romantic anthem, McGee issued his 2-step masterpiece on his own TMG Records in 1981. McGee would revisit the composition later in the decade, dressing the tune with drum machines and synthesizers for a run of 12” singles. However, this 45-only version from 1976 captures the progressive soul stepper at its most organic.

Soul Source - Offers feature

Soul Source Select Offers
Introduction
Select Offers is a revamped feature that has just been re-added to the Soul Source site and will be running along side the existing sales forums
The previous version (up last year for a few months) was found wanting due to a poor auction format.
This  revamped version shifts the focus from an fixed basic auction system to a more flexible 'offers' system
Basically a 'Make an offer'  feature - a basic inhouse system designed to offer members a more structured version of the "open to offers" sales procedure...
Which should now offer to all members a more structured formal method of buying/selling records, that offers features that go beyond those offered by the soul source sales forums.
Features
The feature takes advantages of the many built in Soul Source features
Multiple scans/images - can be added via the attachment feature (same method as per forum post - jpg, gif or png format)
Sound clips - mp3s can be added via the attachment feature (note only mp3s at moment please)
A more info/description section - a dedicated place for detailed info such as grading, payments, postal/shipping details etc
Questions - a question to seller section

Offer System - an inhouse 'make an offer' system

Forum - each offer item will be auto posted into the sales forum

Exposure - social sharing features, banner system and more to help both keep members informed and up to date

Notifications/Follow - all sellers/buyers can use the notification system to be informed on updates to listings/offers etc Settings and choice of notifications can be set if wish via profile settings

Sellers Info - members reputation, feedback, etc etc all show on the item page
Listing Fee
Offers is open to all members to list however have adopted a listing fee policy for this feature
The reasoning behind the listing fee is threefold
Assist the site in achieving full self-supporting status to try to cover all the various site costs and allow improvements To try and ensure that the listings are vibrant and worthwhile, having a fee will hopefully avoid bulk block listings, over pricing and repeated posts/bumps etc Validation of Accounts - By using fees it does means all sellers need to pay via a paypal account or credit card, which may lessen the concerns regarding unknown sellers identities. Cost/Method
Current listing fee for this opening period is a special opening offer of just a flat £1 per item
Payment is via paypal/credit card and is integrated into the listing submission procedure automatically

Future
It is aimed to be a complimentary feature to all the current sales features we offer, and as with all features as the use and such develops so will follow improvements and new features
For further details/information
Please see the FAQs guide to submission of items and the guide to system

Rare Soul Uncovered - History Of Northern Soul 1984 Sleeve Notes

Was having another dig around the soul source back garden, and stumbled on this...

Another scanned sleeve notes ocr (not sure) type of thing done in the last century, this time around the scan is from the Charly Comp Lp "Rare Soul Uncovered" with the notes being written by Dave Evision.
The notes are not really that related to the actual tracks, its basically a take on the 'History Of Northern Soul' as it was circa 1984. As always these notes do provide a 'snapshot' in time of attitudes etc
Sleeve notes off 'Rare Soul Uncovered (18 Northern Soul Favourites)' - Charly LP
 'History Of Northern Soul'
With the demise of the famous Wigan Casino All Niter rumours were rife that the remaining faithful Northern Soul fans still left would be duly buried in the rubble, along with the dance floor the balcony and of course a thousand and one memories of great all niters past. What the doubters had not bargained for was the fervent never say die attitude of soul fans throughout the U.K. bred into them by their memories spanning back to the early sixties. It had been this pride and appetite for the continuation of this unique scene', as it is affectionately known. That has proved beyond any doubt that Northern soul and it's dedicated followers are part of the longest lasting 'fad' known to man!
For the uninitiated the interest for this special type of music broke out in the mid-sixties. It was felt that when the opposite numbers on the other side of the Atlantic were sucked into the whirlpool of Beatle mania that if they didn't want their own home grown mainly black artists, then we would be only too pleased to oblige by flying their flag for them. It seemed a fair swap Suddenly we found an underground cult in our midst. Manchester seemed as good a geographical place as any to provide the launch pad for this seemingly unwanted American music. Venues rapidly sprung up. with the Twisted Wheel acting as command H.Q, flanked by the Bluenote nearby and the Top Twenty out in the suburbs. Sheffield followed suit with the Mojo. in Bradford it was the Ambassador and so on. Taking in predominantly Northern and Midland cities. Leading soul journalist and co-founder of the legendary Soul City label. Dave Godin claimed responsibility for christening it Northern Soul.
At this point the interest had broken into an epidemic with curiosity and demand for the music spreading at a breathtaking pace. The symptoms were for rare. Collectable sounds preferably with a fast beat.
By the early 70's it was becoming increasingly difficult to prevent the lid from blowing off the top of the pot. As the pot was overflowing with an expanding army of soul fans eager to digest as much new vinyl as their little legs could dance to. D.J.'s found themselves virtually as mothers feeding their young. Not daring to fail to obtain more and more different sounds, yet ensuring that only the rare. Collectable and danceable tunes would suffice as the fodder. By the early 7Os the Wheel had closed but hot on it's heels
By the early 70's the Wheel had closed but hot on it's heel's came other all-nighters like "Up the Junction" in Crewe and 'The Catacombs' in Wolverhampton but it was the 'Golden Torch' in my hometown of Stoke On Trent which took over the reins as the leading haven, probably due to it's capability, like the Wheel before it, to actually import obscure Americian soul artists in as live acts. Inevitably, commercialism was bound to creep in, as this different way to social life became increasingly popular. The music press infiltrated first, followed closely by the national daily's. All levels of radio and even T.V. documentaries, Everything from £100.00 singles to baggy trousered youths hitching from every part of the country became hot news for the media. The Casino had even over shadowed the Rugby Club and the Pier. Inquisitive faces seen for the first time, guaranteed weekly packed houses. Purist veterans of the Wheel and Torch days reluctantly accepted that the secret was out and many flew the nest.
The mid to late 70's were very healthy. with other equally popular allniters from Cleethorpes to Sheffield and Newton Aycliffe to Yate. One venue seen by many as the engine room of Northern soul, was by far the most popular non allnighter, that was Blackpool Mecca.
In compiling the album I have included soul sounds which have spanned from those unassuming and innocent days of the 60s right through to music still popular at present.
Hopefully these sleeve notes will give you an insight into what for me have been 16 very happy years, both as a D.J. and more importantly as a hard core, grass roots soul fan, who like thousands of others has been privileged to experience this unique phenomenon. Finally to all you youngsters out there welcome aboard... and to all the regulars over the years.... Thanks for the memory.

Robert Montgomery & Chain Reaction - I Need You Girl - Soul Junction 45 New

Robert Montgomery A lost Georgian Soul Treasure Rediscovered.

Robert, one of the Peach States more obscure recording artists, at one time having only been known to the most diehard 70’s soul collectors for his solitary Crescent label 45, “I Need You Girl”.
Press Release: Robert Montgomery & Chain Reaction   “I Need You Girl”   SJ1007
Release Date: Monday January 30th 2017

Robert Montgomery is a Singer, Songwriter, Producer, Performer, Keyboard and Organ Instrumentalist, who began his music career in his early teens jamming with local bands in his small hometown of Rome, Georgia. His most exciting experience in those early days was with the formation of a band called “The Sons of Aries.” They performed a good blend of rock, soul, and jazz, keeping them very busy performing throughout the southeastern states of the US for a considerable time. However, they never gravitated to recording any original material, with the group eventually disbanding.
It was then that Robert began to write his own songs. One such tune was the soulful “I Need You Girl,” a song based on personal experience with his lady and future wife Emma. By now in his early 20’s Robert was intent on becoming that solo artist that he always aspired to be. Hooking up with a crafty local businessman named Jeffrey Jackson Jr, He entered the studio and recorded “I Need You Girl,” using guys from his former group who were by that time called ‘Chain Reaction’. So the song was released on Jackson’s label, Crescent Records, but because of a shoestring budget the 1000 copies pressed were poorly distributed and the song never really achieved any great level of success.

At that point, to get more experience, Robert took an opportunity for the large part of a year to go on the road with a group from the mid-west called Villaruz. They majored in performing dance sets of pop, rock, and soul music in the mid-west and eastern parts of the country and played big events like the Kentucky Derby often settling down in large hotels with nightclubs for a month at a time, thus making their road life more palatable.
Still not satisfied with the direction of his music career, Robert during 1978 with his wife moved to Atlanta where he soon heard a band rehearsing in an apartment complex. They sounded good but at that time they didn’t have a keyboard and organ player, so Robert introduced himself and asked if he could sit in. The band in question being the funk group “Ripple,” originally from Michigan, who themselves had moved to Atlanta upon signing with GRC Records. Ripple recorded several hit singles for GRC including “I Don’t Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky”. Later followed by the seminal album “Sons Of The Gods” for Salsoul Records in 1977, which featured their perennial disco/hustle classic “The Beat Goes On And On”. The group by now was being reconstructed by their band leader percussionist Brian Sherrer. They liked Robert’s playing and vocal abilities, so they invited him into the group and began gigging together. They were also creating new material and thinking of collaborating together on a new album. Although Robert’s main dream remained to be a solo artist, he was willing to give this a try in the event it might finally work out.
It was during this time, that Robert using musicians from Ripple entered the studio and recorded four self penned songs as a vanity project and a further two songs written by other group members. Being cautious, they recorded the music together but kept the business affairs separate, for they all had experienced many prior disappointments. The output from this recording session remained unissued ( a situation soon to be rectified on future Soul Junction projects) Robert was hoping that this might finally be his chance to make it, but sadly it didn’t happen, and by this time being 28 years old and married, he decided to put more emphasis on settling down and building a family. Turning his back on a career as a full time musician he began a new career in the insurance business, which  would lead to him working as an insurance agent for the next 30 years, although he did continue to dabble with his music where and when he could.

SJ1007 - Robert Montgomery & Chain Reaction - Promo.mp3
Robert remained oblivious that through the insatiable appetite of European record dealers and collectors alike in their quest to find Black America’s lost soul treasures, his 1976 melodic piano driven outing “I Need You Girl” had been rescued from total obscurity to become a highly appreciated and sought after modern soul favourite. Some circa 15 years after it was initially spun original 45 copies are still hard to come by. It was during his own quest to obtain himself a copy that respected German DJ Lars Bulnheim tracked down Robert Montgomery’s whereabouts and passed the lead on to us at Soul Junction, hence the release of this very hard and desirable 45. A scenario that has made Robert Montgomery a very excited man about this renewed interest in his music.

El Count Executives - I Want To Thank You - Cannonball Records

Cannonball Records caused quite a stir during the summer of 2016 with the release of the labels 4th single with the previously unreleased “What I Done Wrong” by the the little known Big Lee Dowell.  The release found favour across Europe with copies selling out very quickly and soon commanding a three figure sum. To satisfy demand a 12 inch version was released.  The track was basically a demo recording which Alberto F Zanini, the label owner and the house band better known as the Cannonballs did their magic and added a backing track to come up with the biggest record of 2016.

January 2017 sees the seventh release for the label and again it is another find from Alberto’s Detroit digging venture.  Again just an unfinished demo by The El Count Executives titled “I Want To Thank You” that Alberto and the Cannonballs have again done their magic and come up with another superb classy mid 70s dancer.

Very little is known about The El Count Executives.  They did have one release that is known about on the tiny Detroit “Gemini” label in the early to mid 70s.  The two sides being Pot Of Gold / Nothing Comes To A Sleeper (But A Dream) (GEMINI 2221).  The 45 is very scarce, when it has sold it has commanded a three figure price, over £600 the highest I can see during a quick search.  That is all I can find about the group so any other information will be greatly appreciated.
As for the Cannonball release, it was recorded circa 1976. One side is for the dancers, strings and percussion added by the Cannonballs and the tempo increased giving us a classy mid 70s dancer.  The flip is as Alberto describes a proper sound track for the lovers.  Both sides the drums are replayed and piano is added.  The 45 has received various plays on the radio across Europe by the likes of Dave Thorley and yours truly during a guest appearance and has been very well received with nothing but praise for the recording.

The Cannonball release is been dedicated to the memory of one of our Soul Brothers who we recently lost, Paul Thrower.  A true gent, one off the nicest, funniest and wittiest people you could wish to meet and a true Soul Music connoisseur who supported everything Alberto and Cannonball did, a truly nice touch by Cannonball.
The 45 will be released on the 9th of January 2017 on Cannonball’s sister label “RADAR”.  It has been limited to a 500 copy press.  Copies can be ordered through Paypal to cannonballsoul@gmail.com.  The cost is £20 plus £10 P&P for UK buyers.  European buyers please email cannonballsoul@gmail.com for details.  Copies are limited to three per person, it is likely to sell out pretty quick so order without delay to be sure of a copy.
In-between Big Lee Dowell and this impending release the label released "Do You Get The Message" by Robert Jones and Berdell Gaston.  Jone and Gaston are the writers of this track that was released by Grey Imprint, dance floor favourite across Europe.  This is the songwriter demo with the Cannonballs weaving their magic giving us another dance floor winner.  More great work is promised for the future and these tiny labels, even though what they do is because of their passion for the music still  need our support to continue bringing new music to the scene.  Email Alberto for more info on purchasing Jones and Gaston and other releases from Cannonball.

Best Soul Books of 2016

Happy New Year
I think it's been a vintage year for books on the history of soul music.  As the original soul music generation mature some of them are using their knowledge and passion to produce some fantastic, well written books that have all ready provided me with hours of enjoyment.   I've chosen four so plenty of scope for others to add their preferences.
1.  Spinning Around - The History of The Soul LP  A-K by  John Lias.
Lias emerges as a major writer on soul music and by focusing on the Soul LP fills a significant gap. The ambition and hard work in listening to every soul LP in what must be a vast collection really paid off impressively. Lias is opinionated, witty and above- all knowledgeable.  The list of acknowledgements includes doyens of writing such as Sirshambling and David Cole . It's a tour-de-force on the subject and at £20 quite honestly a snip.
2. That There's That Beat! Guide to the Philly Sound by Dave Moore and Jason Thornton
At 700 plus pages this is surely the most comprehensive book ever published on the subject of the Philadelphia music. It also takes an historical perspective before focusing on soul music as it charts the city's soulful journey from the churches to the charts and dance-floors. Beautifully designed, lavishly produced and meticulously researched with numerous entries on artists, producers, musicians, DJs and even a few dealers its surely a must-have for soul music fans especially those who favour northern soul.  Its not a cheap publication though.
3.  Scepter Wand Forever : The History of Scepter Records - Steve Guarnori
I've not had this book long but all ready its well thumped. Another fine achievement from a respected writer. It follows Scepter from the beginning to its demise in the mid 70s more or less chronologically. Its packed with so many facts about the artists that its almost overwhelming. Hardly anyone is omitted and even labels associated or distributed by Scepter are included. There's lots of new research and fascinating pictures. I do get the impression that Guarnori almost lost control of the project such is its ambition but what he's produced is quality. A superb effort.
Also enjoyed:
4. Travelling Soul: The Life of Curtis Mayfield by Todd Mayfield and Travis Atria - An excellent insight into the life and music of a soul maestro.
Please feel free to add your choices

Motown Unreleased 1966 Released

Digital release of unreleased motown tracks from 1966

Thanks to copyright laws recent years have seen an annual release of unreleased motown tracks that are just about to hit the 50 year old mark. It's all basically down to a copyright legal requirement to publicly release any track by a certain age or lose the copyright protection
This is normally done via digital means, and yesterday thanks to the Soulful Detroit topic click here to view word was out that this years release is now live and available for purchase and preview via Windows Store and Itunes
The list of the 80 tracks follows the link below
Note for Uk types while can preview the tracks via either windows store or the web page, I can't find a way to purchase individual tracks and its similar for itunes, so maybe it's a case of Us release for purchase only at the current moment?

John Rhys not well

Just wanted everyone to know (if you don't know),  that John Rhys collapses having some sort of episode where he stops breathing.
Here's the email Matt Lucas mailed me earlier today:
"Hi, I just got off the phone with John Rhys and a week ago today he almost died.  His wife gave him cpr for over a half hour before the Medics got there.
He had to get a Pacemaker put in but seems in good sprits now.   His heart was beating to slow  they said and he has more energy now.
He told me he will be at the Detroit a go go show next year, hopefully."

Linda Jones - Precious - The Anthology 1963-72 Kent Records

News and details about a recent release from Kent Record. Billed as 'The first career anthology of one of soul music’s most beloved female vocalists' this is a comp that if we ever had an album of the month slot on here then this would be a contender.

The opening paragraph of the release notes on Ace record websites by Tony Rounce set the scene...

Soul music has never had a singer with the extraordinary vocal power of New Jersey’s Linda Jones. Her arsenal of vocal shrieks, wails, passion, sanctity and full-on fire has enthralled soul fans since she burst onto the scene with her breakthrough hit ‘Hypnotized’ in 1967. Those who know and love her work will vociferously tell you she is, simply, the greatest female soul singer of all time. At the very least, she is up there with any of her internationally famous peers, yet her catalogue remains largely unrecognised outside of soul’s inner sanctum....
Details and previews follow below ,

Dennis Coffey - Live Album from 1968 - Cd Out Jan 2017

News about a upcoming 2017 release...
Deluxe CD RELEASE DATE (CD): January 13th, 2017
Deluxe Limited Edition LP Available for Record Store Day’s Black Friday Event Only!
RELEASE Date (LP): November 25, 2016
Never-before issued recordings from legendary Motown guitarist, Dennis Coffey, captured live at Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge in Detroit in 1968. One of the Funk Brothers, as featured in the Grammy award winning documentary “Standing in The Shadows of Motown”, Coffey has played with countless musicians from Quincy Jones to Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder.
Hot Coffey in the D was produced by Mike Theodore and Coffey, the same team that produced the recently rediscovered folk singer Rodriguez’s debut album Cold Fact (1970) and the soundtrack to the Academy Award winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man”. These recordings showcase Coffey in his prime, raw and unfiltered, with fellow Detroiters organist Lyman Woodard (former musical director for Martha and the Vandellas) and drummer Melvin Davis (Smokey Robinson, Wayne Kramer).
The package features striking cover art by acclaimed comic book artist and Metro Detroit native, Bill Morrison (The Simpsons, Futurama), rare photos, as well as essays by veteran music journalist and album co-producer Kevin Goins, who interviewed Dennis Coffey, Melvin Davis and Mike Theodore for the project, and Resonance producer Zev Feldman.
via http://www.resonancerecords.org/release.php?cat=HCD-2024
In the late '60s, Dennis Coffey was a fixture in the fertile Detroit soul recording studio scene, where he helped shape the sound of countless hits for Detroit's indie soul labels Golden World, Ric-Tic, Kelmac and Revilot, among others. Jack Montgomerys "Dearly Beloved," The Reflections' "Just Like Romeo and Juliet" and Darrell Banks's "Open the Door to Your Heart" are just a few of the Northern Soul classics of that era that Coffey played on. At the same time, organist Lyman Woodard was the musical director for Martha Reeves and The Vandellas (Heat Wave) and Melvin Davis was busy cutting 45s of his own as a vocalist on the Groovesville, Fortune and Mala labels and landing a number regional hits including This Love Was Meant To Be/Save It (Never Too Late).
