You could tell it was going to busy night, most of the seating was taken shortly after opening. We entered the main room, a haven for rare and under played cuts. Phil Threlfall playing the Embers ‘First Time’. Followed by another gem from the superb Hesitations Soul Superman LP, ‘Soul Kind of Love’.

Pete Radcliffe was warming up the 2nd room, dedicated to crossover and modern soul. A new Kent release, Jon Lucien’s ‘We’ve Got Love’. Followed by the mellow harmonies of James Holvay ‘Don’t Take your Love’.

In the main room Jumpin Joan was injecting some real energy into the dancefloor with Jimmy Burns’ and Edwin Starr ‘My Kind of Woman. George Sharp took to the decks and kept momentum high with dance classics, Gene Woodbury and Stanley Mitchell. Then included my favourite side of The Crystals twofer ‘Are You Trying to Get Rid of Me Baby’. Not forgetting Maxine Brown’s masterpiece ‘Let Me Give You My Lovin’.

Back in the Modern room Steve Plumb offered some of his soulful peaches, Lynn White’s emotive ‘I Don’t know Why’, B.J.B ‘I Gotta Make You Believe in Me’. Then raising the dance tempo with Patti Labelle’s ‘It’s Alright with Me’.  Charlie Smith next, starting with a jolt to the dance floor with The Constellations, then some stunning crossover tracks including Hamilton Movement, Celiste Hardy, Rhonda Davis and the incredible vocals of Carl Hall ‘What About You’.

Carl Fortnum was packing the floor in the main room playing Danny Woods, Rudy Love and for me, a track that stands at the summit of Northern dance anthems, Eddie Parker ‘I’m Gone’. Phil Threlfall offered us Marvin Gaye’s version of ‘Lonely Lover’. A track I believe HD&H originally wrote for him, but it ended up on the West Coast to be sung by blue eyed Jimmy McFarland, making it his own. His exceptional set included Joe Matthews’ relentless dancer ‘Ain’t Nothing You Can Do’.

Nick McKinnon was keeping the modern room lively with some 70’s magic, Collins and Collins and Innersection; before introducing the legendary Soul Sam.  Sam ensured no let up on the dance floor, spinning amongst others, The O’Jays ‘Backstabbers’, Soulutions, Charles Johnson, Phyllis Hyman and Garfield Flemming. A track I never tire of hearing, Bill Harris ‘Am I Cold, Am I Hot’. And the peerless David Ruffin ‘Walk Away from Love’.

In the main room we managed to catch Carl playing William Powell ‘Heartache Souvenirs’, before our carriage arrived and we had to say our goodbyes. A standout night for soul lovers, a fabulous atmosphere in both rooms and something for everyone.

A very busy and enjoyable night at The Grumpy takeover, top tuneage throughout. We arrived just after opening time, to an already busy room.

Great early sets from Joan and Phil, have to say Carl Fortnum nailed it for me, that happy knack of playing the right record and tempo that captured the imagination of the dancefloor talking of which, record of the night for me, assume c/u Doc + The Interns "the love that you give"

Any info, such a great record, complete with guitar breaks.

Had a brief time in the Modern Room and Soul Sam was "rockin' da house" as you would expect.

Great to catch up with our good Friends Ann Mundey and Tony Mundey.

C'mon Mike Roche let's have a detailed review and playlist. Culcheth deffo on the up, look forward to next month !!

Like Mick said, see if we get at least a clutch of playlists?, would be very nice...understandable if folk are still giving their head a good shake, almost 24 hours on and maybe just about easing the lethargy from their frames!, the dancefloor really did take off....even the tasty supper treats from Village Pizza were forgone, so knackered were we after that humungous session😲🤣 so many stand out tunes and lots of Detroit recordings in there...picks for me off the top of my head, were the Versatones, the instrumental backing track to Sam Ward's " Sister Lee" and Carl also played a tune by ( i think he said ) Geno Washington " Soul Baby "?...big faves Delegates Of Soul and Rudy Love got the treatment. Soul Sam playing " Backstabbers " off a 12", the modern room got quite busy as the evening wore on too.....hope everyone has been happy enough with the pics...did do some video clips as well but, refused to upload on here....have to catch em on the Culcheth page😉👍

We just wanted to say a massive thank you to each and every one of you who came on Saturday night. We arrived at just gone 7pm to be greeted by Rob and the lovely Shirley, and by 7.30pm there were already folk in the room, seated and waiting for the tunes to start at 8. By 8.30pm we're not sure there was an empty table to be found in the place with travellers from Scotland, Wales, Midlands, Yorkshire, Tewkesbury, and beyond, an awesome effort for a sunny Bank Holiday weekend! So five stars it is for you guys!! 🌟

We appreciate all the lovely comments on here, and on the night, it means so much to us. As you know, we never post individual playlists, as our thinking from the outset was not about individual DJs, but the night as a cohesive whole. That said, we will look at getting an overview together of some of what got played, but please bear with us, our memories aren't what they once were.

Thanks as always to Carl, who is without doubt the ultimate in all things soul, records, and lunacy - what a voice 😂 And George of course, it was so good to have him grace our night once again. Last but definitely not least, we can't forget the main man Baz, who goes above and beyond to make sure the sound system is spot on everytime, and ensures everything runs smoothly, we can't thank him enough.

So, we'll see all you lovely people in December then for more of the same, Joan and Phil x

Three words sum up the GRUMPY SOUL takeover at Culcheth last night…Exciting, Educational and most of all thoroughly Enjoyable!

Peeps waiting for the doors to open at 7:30 was the first sign that ‘All Roads, literally did lead to CULCHETH VILLAGE HALL, no matter what Martin Pitt said about my dodgy map 😉 …as they just kept coming until the main room was absolutely bouncing!

The music was just superb from start to finish, with classics, followed by underplayed gems, followed by some of the top rarities from our wonderful, precious scene. The legs ache, the ears buzz but above all the mind and wants list is expanded.

Congrats to Phil, Joan, Carl and special guest George Sharp as well as the Modern Room ‘Crew’, Soul Sam, who’s really enjoying himself at Culcheth, Steve Plumb, Charlie Smith, Nick McKinnon and new music purveyor, Pete Ratcliffe for keeping the Modern Room busy all night…

Looking forward already to June 7th when Nottingham’s MICK H joins us for another night of quality soulful sounds
