June 17, 200519 yr Most folks say 70s & modern are the same but I disaggree. Modern has a place of it's own, essentially a modern room. You can get away with 70s in a Northern room I think (providing it's not too moderny discoish sounding ) Here are a few prime examples of what I'd call crossover, 70s and modern. Try sites like soulclub.org or the sounds section on here for samples... Crossover Dynells - Call on me Richard Caiton - I'd like to get near you Continental Four - The way I love you 70s Joseph Webster - My love is so strong Eric Lomax c/up Troy Johnson - I want you Modern Solid Gold Revue - Love's traffic Cloudburst - I'm lovin you Nightchill - Hop skip & jump Probably get told I'm wrong but hey who cares Billy Edited June 17, 200519 yr by billytheboot

Try sites like soulclub.org or the sounds section on here for samples... Crossover Dynells - Call on me Richard Caiton - I'd like to get near you Continental Four - The way I love you *Pretty much crossover, but these are all what I'd call northern crossover or maybe crossover northern. Undanceable and weird (but soulful) ballads like 2001 Black Essence is pure crossover. 70s Joseph Webster - My love is so strong Eric Lomax c/up Troy Johnson - I want you *I still have not been presented with any proof (despite numerous requests!  ) that Joseph Webster is a 70's record, and particularly not a late 70's record like some have claimed. I simply don't believe it. Modern Solid Gold Revue - Love's traffic Cloudburst - I'm lovin you Nightchill - Hop skip & jump *All 70's aren't they? I agree they are basically 'modern' IMO, but Nightchill should be filed under '70's' using your system I think, perhaps even '70's northern'.  Modern nowadays is house 12's and Y2K5 jap import gospel CD's and stuff ain't it? Or at least it can be? Or is that just soo out and I just did not hear about it? Probably get told I'm wrong but hey who cares Billy link Edited June 17, 200519 yr by Guest
June 17, 200519 yr You see that's where we differ Mr Herm...... I'd call 2001 Black Essence 70s soul, but that's MY opinion. Psychodelic Frankie is a good example of your "pure crossover" I suppose Joseph Webster positively dates 1975. And you must be some sort of cloth-eared half-whit not to be able to tell it's 70s joke - don't get all righteous on me now Christian... And as for the 3 I chose as modern... Solid Gold Revue is 1980; Cloudburst around '82 and I'd guess Nightchill mid 80s but not sure.... Hippo will know tehehe Booty McBill Edited June 17, 200519 yr by billytheboot

June 17, 200519 yr You see that's where we differ Mr Herm...... I'd call 2001 Black Essence 70s soul, but that's MY opinion. Psychodelic Frankie is a good example of your "pure crossover" I suppose 2001 Black Essencs IS 70's soul, of course, but a lot of crossover is from the 70's, it's all about the sound, not the date of the recording. 2001 Black Essence has a pretty dated, totally non disco/sophisto sound to it for being from NY 1974, and therefore it is to be filed under crossover IMO. 'Modern' (as a sound) is said to begin with the early 70's Philly productions, early 70's Marvin Gaye and Curtis, that sort of thing and onwards with disco etc. There are now so many subgenres and sects to be found under the 'modern' umbrella that it is all pretty hopeless to explain easily, if at all, if you ask me. Don't ask me.

June 20, 200519 yr Certain we covered this topic a while back...think me and Trouty had a fist fight over the term Crossover.......
June 20, 200519 yr Seriously though i think it is neccesary to put sounds into genres, the scene has evolved and many nights cater for differing tastes, also helps when looking through a myriad of record boxes (well it helps me, when i'm in a 70's x/over mood) .A broad generalisation won't help anyone with the plethora of events on, for me it helps define my choice of venue, yet paradoxically i always sway towards an "Across the Board" night...............I now totally retract my original statement and will fight like a dog in a steel bin with anyone who suggests we "pigeonhole this music of ours....... Brett...No F****** idea Franklin
