as a paying punter can any of you dj s on soul source tell me why some dj s say they have and will play you a requested record when they have no intention to do so.....why not just be honest and say they havenot got it or they wont play it....

90% of them travelled 100's of miles paid for their own petrol and sometimes accomodation too , plus add to that if they are doing the job correctly arrive early to hear what is being played to then spin their yarns to sometimes abuse fron one person that hasn't heard his fave tune , sometimes it spills on the net ohmy goodness he played Pyramid ! to then be paid a small amount to then have to question what they play for you ?

Bloodyhell who would want to be a Dj ? I wouldn't stone the bleedin crows or what !

Depends on the kinda NS night you are attending & the DJ you are asking, i personally try to be polite & find that saying the next DJ up has deffo got em, so ask him, helps.........even if it is BUTCH .

we say we have it & will play it basically to get you to go away instead of having an argument over why we don't have that song while we are working

But then they keep on coming back and harassing you over why you haven't played it.

Good points here about dj's doing their homework,but there is another point that has been overlooked. I have seen lots of events advertised with dj's on who l know pretty much that the promoter HAS NEVER HEARD PLAY they just see their names crop up at lots of venues....so they think he/she seems popular I,ll have em at my do,thinking they'll bring the punters in. Example what would be the point of Karl Heard playing at an oldies venue he wouldn't fit and they wouldn't like him or ginger djing at the DDA or Burnley...imo both a total waste as the dj's wouldn't be playing what the punters wanted simple as that.These of course are extreme examples it usually happens on a lesser level........imo dj's should learn to say NO if the venue in question is not what they're about (the dj)....And promoters should get out and about on the scene and not only know their dj's,but book the ones that are right for their venue. Most of us that go out and about can look at the dj line up at any given venue and know straight away what type of music you're goona get.Been to plenty of places where they've had dj's on that were wrong for that venue and it's made for a crap night......tezza

You do Ginger a dis-service here he has a superb collection but just doesn't get chance to play some of his rarer peices. If you'd heard him at Middleton and then compared that to a set at Prestwich I think you'd agree he can match his set to most if not all crowds.

Having said that I do get your point.

Don't really agree with the last quote,

A Dj is indeed there to entertain us,because we as paying customers want entertaining,

If the said Dj was having a bummer of a night,He or she would be praying for requests,to help them get out of the shit they are in,

No dancers at a Northern venue to me means the wrong music selection,ie playing what they think is good and bugger the punter because They the Dj(not all of them)think that they are there to educate us not to entertain,Which is what they are being paid for!!!

Many if not all the people here on SS are really quite well versed in soul music,And like to hear records that they know,not to say they(we)dont like to hear something we havent heard before or had forgot about,

A Dj's job is to Dj not play god,

I have on various occasions been to soul nights,where the Dj in question as been on a personal crusade to educate the punters (us)only to kill the night by playing stuff people don't like or don't know,

Of course I would'nt know what record request refusal started this thread,She may have asked for the Bay City Rollers or Third Finger Left Hand,But then again it could have been any of the thousands of Northern Soul records we listened to as kids and grew to love,
