Just picked up a chuck thomas on bandbox & noticed it has a hairline crack running from the centre hole to about 1/3 rd of the label,from my uni days studying engineering i think if i drill a small hole(about the same size as a bb hole)at the end of the crack,this should stop it progressing any further,anyone tried this ?,the physics is sound but reluctant to try it on a 75 quid record,no smartarse comments from mr shard

seems to make perfect sense to me, any torsional force is then displaced from the point off stress ,equally accross the surface of the disc.cant you just super glue the f***r?

You can bet your life its on shitty styrene!.......so no!....superglue wont hold for more than 5 minutes.

I hve both my Get it baby and Bari track hairlined from edge to label, being both double siders I need a solution to fix them without losing one of the tracks. So far no joy, tried superglue and it works , but not for long

Should work as I'm sure they use this method on small windscreen cracks on cars (small hole at each end of crack and then fill holes with a resin)

Though I would be concerned that a drill bit could 'snatch' as it goes through and cause the crack to splinter in another direction?

Hot electricians soldering iron with a thin tip might be a safer way to make the hole, vinyl surrounding hole will also be slightly thicker from melting so would be even stronger.

Might slightly burn label around the hole you make, but surely less chance of cracking it further.

"Bari Track" are you saying you have this on Styrene?,if so i`ve never seen a Styrene copy of this,only Vinyl,have you got a scan if it is?,cheers............

i know it's a rough way of doing it but this works. Run a line of sellotape along the crack, but on the side that you may not play, it stops the crack and providing that you make sure that the 2 parts are dead level with each other, it will still be playable.

If you're not interest in one side cut out a piece of cardboard the same size as the record and glue it on it will do the job perfectly. I fixed a four fig 45 this way after it was handed to me in two pieces, played perfect after I repaired it.

The best thing to use if you only need the one side is aluminium tape (as used in car body repair shops)

If you need both sides I have plastic welded a small strip of metal to the record edge (cut off staple) but you need a very steady hand and a good eye, dont know if I could still manage this.

Actually Dave I hold my hand up Because of the crack I always assumed it was styrene, just got it out and it is indeed vinyl...quite brittle vynil I must say to have gone like that, all the way across the label as well ...here it is.
