Not sure if this is the right forum so if any moderator wants to move it then please feel free to do so.

For the last 3 or 4 years I've had quite a few negative comments about the dancefloor in the KGB, and quite rightly so, it has become a bit worn. Not sure when exactly it was laid but I've been putting a regular monthly event there for 12 years, so it's seen some action. Also there's been at least 2 floods which doesn't help.

The management are now in a position to do a complete refurb, bar area, stage and flooring. The manager asked me last saturday what would be the best kind of wood to use for the dancefloor and what would be the best kind of finish for the wood. When they ask for quotes they would be able to specify exactly what they would need.

tell em to do the main hall barry ! maple is the way to go i guess ..

Maple is definitely the way to go but best to get it sealed ( helps with spillages ) and if done right doesn't affect to movement. Also know of a company doing a sprung concrete floor designed for dancing and providing longer lasting wear.

Got some contacts inbox me if you want some numbers.

There are companies who specialise in sprung floors (A la Ritz)!

Nowadays mainly squash courts , as they don't build many dance halls these days . What they do is fit large rubber pads into the base of the boards which makes the floor bouncy

no idea of cost but no quality flooring is cheap these days

Thanks for reply, yes I don't think it will be cheap but the good thing is it's not a massive area to lay a floor on. At present the whole of the bar area is covered with wood flooring. It was suggested to me last saturday about doing a small dancefloor area with a carpet surround. Don't think this would work myself, so pushing for a complete wooden area, Barry, KGB, KTF.

Ey up Tony A, I asked a few years ago about taking the snooker tables out for one night only and having a final all-niter there, but during the conversation I was told that the original dancefloor had been taken up years ago and it would mean putting a temporary one down. I can hear the sobbing from here as you read this, Barry, KGB, KTF.

On snooker, Corner pocket shut again last thursday, another soul venue gone, for now.

my boss managed to buy a loud of maple flooring from a reclaimers, it had been used as a gym floor in a previous life.

I goes without saying that a maple sprung floor is the best you can install on any dance floor, but the right upkeep over a 25 year period is literally frightening & way out of the finical costing of running a club type venue that is only used for a northern night a few times a year.

Moho Live Manchester have just installed a new Polyurethane dance floor at a considerable cost but no were near the cost of installing maple & the maintenance over the same 25 year period is minimal in comparison plus it's very talc friendly!

Cheers Steve, the KGB (Bar Abbey) is also used for general parties, ie; birthday's etc. so perhaps Maple might be spoilt on normal people (lol). I think they also have a rock night and all the beer been thrown about wouldn't help (headbangers eh), all said tongue in cheek chaps. My wife's a bit of a headbanger, well she gives me headache. When I was building my first house I managed to buy a load of maple flooring which I used for the bedroom floors. The 'spring' was wonderful and added a new dimension to our sex life. Happy days

Will you be selling off parts of the old floor? I am sure it would bring back a lot of happy KGB memores for people who have danced there over the last 12years, I am making room on my fireplace as you read this!!!

I think a lot of people would want to take some home and burn it. Wouldn't want to trip over it at home. All comments passed on to manager, so thanks for all the feedback. Wait and see what happens come August, when the job should go ahead, thanks again, Barry, KGB, KTF.
