the conclusion that there is a definite softening of the market. Most re-issues

that went to for the £20 mark 12/18 months ago struggle to make a fiver, that's

good news for the poor folk.

Also some mid-priced records (Invitations on Stateside, etc) don't reach those

dizzy heights of a year ago. Shifty had a Shawn Robinson, mint for £150, I've

sold them for £250+ in the past (BTW she dated that black bloke who was in

Ironsides - the one that pushed him around in his wheelchair). Doris Troy on

Cameo Parkway, £80 !! seen them go for £160 in the past.

Sorry Chris, but your havin' a larf mate. Shifty always puts a couple on his list that are way below the norm. And just ask Tim Brown how much them big lads, he's been auctioning for Martin Coppell have been fetching. UNBELIEVABLE! and most of them heading back stateside too.

People have been saying the same thing for 30 years, and still prices keep going up.

I think Chris' point on the prices that pressings go for has come down a lot though, even MOR stuff like Ronnie Love, Flirtations NBAH, Seven Day Fool, Leave Me Alone, etc that were fetching silly money a year or so back can be picked up a lot cheaper now

I am watching this from afar but do think you have hit the nail on the head, these big lads, as you call them keep going up, because everyone is chasing the same 200/300 records, and its maybe crept up slightly more than this amount of records, even in smaller scene with 3 or 4 folk continously chasing these records they shove it up to stupid prices.

However I do scout around ebay and there are 1000's of other records, that aren't classed as big lads, that are not going for money at all and definitely bargains to be had, too many people now count £500 or above as a starting price for a record which even in todays world has to be absolutely madness. What I find even more madness is that some of those big lads (e.g. The Professionals, more that I can't think of at moment, which is due to my armchair status) are more played out than any Wigan oldie I can remember, Some so called progressive records (not wanting to open that up but...) have been played regularly over the last 20 years. People are just completely blinded by price.

As long as there are people wanting the same records then these will go up, however, I do think what Dan said recently overall the trend is down, not cheap yet by any means, and still way overpriced, but for those with patience (and a little taste, something that seems be considered overrated in the quest for rarity) there are decent things to be picked up.

Only time will tell!

PS Not against rarity as anyone who seen my top 5 will see but buying it because its good, semi known so cheap and it turns out to be rare surely the nirvana of all collectors??

Got to agree there are some great records to be had out there for not a lot by comparison to so called big tunes, If you class these as club soul sounds Not particularily famous but still great sounds nonetheless

On the score of re-issue boots etc the reasons why The Mel Britts Herbie Hunter Lou Pride Boots etc only fetch what they are worth now instead of silly prices is probably due in no small part to SS and its members giving awareness and advice to younger collectors preventing them from been ripped off!

Can only be a good thing for the continuation of a scene which at times has looked like pricing itself out.

Maybe we should put together a data sheet with the most current "sellers". Say some

50 records and track them on a quarterly basis to see their price progress. bet you'd

be surprised. BTW in the early eighties you COULD pick up a Hit & Run for a tenner

my mate did from a dealer in Herts. On a personal note I'm pleased those 70T's re-issues

are selling for sensible money, they're great for 'returnees'.

Wonder what will happen when the silent majority of NS fans near their sixties and

have to decide on raising cash or hanging on to vinyl. There may be brave words

now, not sure the missus will wanna that though................................

There was a Gene Woddbury connection to ironside too, wasn't he in the pilot episode? Was it GW that she dated or the other one?

"Sanity" is a very relative term in the context of Rare Soul .

It's interesting to look at a site like Popsike to see the arbitrary pricing of certain popular items that have sold on E-Bay. Even looking at say, the prices realised over a period of time is an eye opener - there doesn't seem to be a fixed trend either way. Maybe it's down to imponderables like the finishing times of individual auctions etc.

There's no definitive answer to the question – I seem to be able to get things I want for less than you see them listed for by dedicated online Record Dealers - but I tend to buy stuff that's not popular or in demand it would seem! On the other hand I'm constantly surprised at the prices that cheapies I bought years ago are selling for these days.

The Deep Soul scene has definitely suffered in the last few years IMHO, but I think that was always destined to happen as it doesn't really have the same sort of support network the Rare/Northern Scene does in terms of turning up new and interesting stuff or even the reactivation of older favourites. Maybe all those involved realised they had everything they wanted and lost interest?

Alot of Dsoul was brought to soulies attention through Dave Godin,stuff like montclaires Freddie North,Whispers etc etc .

He took the time and effort to compile his favourites, to put out his likes and what he thought we shouldnt miss out on because there is so much quality out there that gets very little exposure ,

Seem to pick up quite a lot of deep / sweet / ballads on ebay for next to nothing - everyone chasing rare northern / funk items. Makes me laugh when I see something like ' Footsee ' selling for 1.25 , 2 bids - then underneath a crackin SOUL 45 @ 99p and no bids... Well suits me fine!

Cheers M - I've often surprised at the many times I've left opening bids on quality SOUL 45s and won them without anyone else bidding ( I'm sure i'm leaving myself open here ) . Get more for your dollar - good mantra - I'm stockpiling until retirement - when I'll have the time to play them all !
