I have been offered a M- to VG+ Tamla US copy of The Miracles' Shop Around withdrawn globes pressing.

First, is it that rare? Secondly, I've been offered it for $100. Is that a good price?

"Here's the deal on 'Shop Around'...there are 3 recorded versions of 'Shop Around'.

At the original session they recorded 2 versions 55518-A1 and 55518-A2. Gordy decided to press the A-2 version first but right after the records came back he changed his mind and decided to switch to the A-1 version, now since it took a couple weeks to print new labels they just pressed the A-1 using the labels printed with the 55518-A2 master number on them, labels were ordered for the A-1 version but these were only used for promos.

After having both versions pressed up and getting feedback from some DJ's, he knew he had a hit if he could re-record it with a different arrangment, so he called everyone back in for a 2nd session and they recorded the 'HIT' version numbered L-1....once the record took off Gordy decided to press some copies at Columbia's LA plant and that's where the ZTSC copies come from, now on some of those the name Gordy in the writers credits was mis-spelled as Gordt.

On re-issues there were mistakes made of using the original stamper of the A-2 version because new employees at the pressing plant were only matching the stamper to the labels not knowing it was wrong, also in Canada the only version that was ever issued during the original release date was the A-1 version.

When Gordy got the L-1 back from the plant he drove all around Detroit trying to trade the 'HIT' version copies for the 2 earlier versions."

ZTSC is Columbia Midwest (mastered in Chicago, pressed in Terre Haute, Indiana. The rare version has a great twangy guitar solo in the break.

A mate in Australia says no more than $50 for a minter.

I wouldn't go over $25 if it was vg+. If it was mint , maybe $ 50.

that price is top price tim and prob only to a motown collector like myself. but there are a lot around. and dave you are correct for a vg. pos even less.

I'm sure over the years, "Shop Around" sold over a million copies so the price seems a little steep.

motown collectibles are some of the only "northern" records that have significantly dropped in price over the years. like they are super high in the soussan guide. i think the globalization of the market really hits items that were pressed in large quantities.

This is an alternative take of "Shop Around"... The number "H5518 A-2" is etched in the trail off...

The original local pressing, which was withdrawn, was on striped Tamla. If there was a repressing of THAT rarer issue on Globed Tamla, it was re-released in 1962, 1963 or 1964, and should not be worth all that much. The striped version is uncommon, but not really "rare". The re-release might be rarer than the original, but shouldn't be desired all that much, except by fanatic completists. I, myself, have never seen nor heard of a "Globes" re-release of that first, local released version, and I used to drive to Detroit to scour the shops for 45s once a month from 1962-66.

The guy that has the record uses a Goldmine price guide. He said it "books" for $180 and would let me have it for $100. It sounds like it's between M- and VG+. I'd say $25-$30 or he can leave it.

@RobbK, he says it's the globes label, but he could be confused. I'll borrow it from him and give it a spin on the turntable.

The only recent Motown 45 I went bigger on (because it was a swap and no cash was in play) was The Supremes' Buttered Popcorn, which is in great shape, and I know is one of the scarcer titles.
