It looks exactly like a Technics 1200 with a pre amp fitted. If that's what it is you can't go wrong, should be perfect.

I bet it's nowhere nearly as well built as 1200/1210s. Moreover, you can get a decent entry level pro-ject or similar turntable for around £250. Stands to reason that the more gizmos (built in prre-amp, software, USB connection etc) for the same price, the lower quality of turntable you get for your money.

 

I guess at least it will be a tad better than those horrid ion things.

I would imfine inside the shell there's plenty of room for the gizmos and gadgets so no need to lose any quality in the turntable.

However I have the Stanton T92 USB turntable and would recommend thatbone to anyone.

I wasn't talking about the amount of space they take up Chalky!

 

Take away the extras and what your left with is a cheaper turntable surely.  If you don't think you get better quality if you pay a bit more, why not settle for the ion instead of the stanton? Gotcha!

I wouldn't have an Ion given me. But with the advancement in technology surely internal mechanics and parts gets cheaper? Did Technics cash in on their name? I know you got a quality deck but maybe they stopped production because they relied too much on th name rather than keeping up with competition like Stanton who were building quality decks for less?

Surely a pre amp is just a few quid, a usb connection pennies,, maybe a quid or two with installation costs, not a lot of extra cost at the end of the day?

The 1210 mk7 was the last off their production line to my knowledge back end of 2010. Technology won't have advanced too much for analogue based equipment in those 3 years, but parts will no doubt have got cheaper. The big tech companies tend to pump their R&D budgets into digital gear these days so for me, although it sounds great on paper to have all your gizmos in one place, if you're going to use these type of decks anywhere other than your living room, i'd stick with tried and trusted i.e. Technics 1210 or 1200's

 

Pre-amps and USB ports technology won't be expensive, but as with everything theres a scale on quality and price. No matter what, your sound quality and output is only as good as its weakest part. These decks could be the muts danglies, but is the pre-amp is shite then what's the point.

 

It's only my personal opinion, but analogue sound works better with individual specialist top quality parts. Digital's a bit different, as i recently found out when searching for a sound bar for my TV (thanks for the help on that one Chalky, got a belter in the end)!

The other direct drive turntables are no doubt good, and Stanton do one or two very good models indeed, but Technics are built like tanks and keep their value as a result.

Agreed. No way this thing is a replacement for club use.

What I was trying to say was, if you're not a DJ why buy club style decks? You're better off with an entry level hi-fi turntable. If you want to record vinyl then just take a line out from amp into your computer. If you are a DJ, do the same from your mixer.

The T92 is as solid as any Technic I used, not saying it is better but it is just as well built. The top end Stanton is IMO not far off the 1210's but when spending that kinda money you should expect nothing less.

Still can't understand the decision of Technic to cease production. Vinyl demand is rising year on year and other turntable manufacturers seem to be doing ok?

Is an odd one, they were far and away market leaders. Maybe Panasonic just took the decision to invest in digital development rather than analogue, seeing it as a dying breed 3/4yrs ago when they made the decision. Strange strategy.......but then again the biggest demand they'd have had would have been from clubs; house, trance, dub etc. Those scenes are completely dominated by cd decks and laptops/MIDI these days
