Now then,not trying to sound to modest, I used to consider myself a well above average dancer,I won a few competitions in my time ,but I never ever did the backdrops and such, I always thought the peeps that did that stuff did it to get noticed,because they could not really dance very well,and I still hold to that,I know a chap ,cant dance for tuppence,but he does a bit of the acrobatics people standing around think he is brill....but his dancing is shite

know what you mean Bazza, and probably who. used to do the 'acrobatics' bit but was more martial arts stuff, long gone now that stuff. Dont get me wrong I like uptempo stuff eg Pat Powdrill, COD's etc to dance to and anything with a good bit in it for fast spins - (still do the odd high kick though ---but with legs straight

there was a guy from peterborough called steve 'danny' daniels. he won at wigan one night, 1975 I think. he spent the rest of the night chaparoned due to the fact the some oiks wanted to relieve him of his well deserved dosh. danny NEVER did 'stunts', he span quite often, but not obtrusively, he did weird things with his legs, expressive gestures with his arms & hands etc; all in time with the music, which we'll all agree is crucial. he used to have people spellbound. I've never been keen on the gymnasts myself. horses for courses...

yeah macca 1975 second anniversary at casino, 'danny' is now fcuked up with arthritis i jear. you're right. great dancer, all in the timing, it's more important 'when' you do something in a record than what you actually do. love watching kickers, flippers et al, used to do a bit myself many, many years ago, don't get jealous of them, unless they got a full head of fookin' hair!!!!

Taught the kid everything he knew though like most he never perfected the surrogate spin Macca

Three days before the Casino comp he quietly announced he was going to win it.... He asked if I had any moves that I could pass on, This kid was a natural dancer so he could do anything you suggested if it were possible. I told him about this archive film I'd watched a couple of weeks earlier about tap dancing in an America where I noticed a fellar who would go off on a controlled spin, freeze for a split second and then went off another spin in the opposite direction from what was a standing start...Mums room turned into a dance studio and within 10mins he had perfected this move on a CARPET

Come the night he did indeed win and tried this move several times, It was a fitting tribute that three weeks later those guys who populated the area immediately in front of the stage were all at it, some I have to say not very well..happy days...

Back to the thread... backdrops and handstands don't do anything for me.

Some of the good dancers that still do a bit of choreographed gymnastics look fantastic - but then they know exactly where and when it fits in with the tune (Keb is a great example)

Then there are the chappies that start doing it when there's no evident break - or to something mid-tempo! Whats that all about? I think there are some dancers that have headphones in as they are definately dancing to a record that I'm not hearing

Saying all that though - you can't beat a good forward roll accross the dancefloor (hope to see you soon Ady and Jim)

There's dancing, and there's gymnastics. I guess the perfect dancer would mix the two with grace and style. It's rarely seen, is it?

Anyone else remember the days when Booper was the king of the floor? He was an average dancer (IMHO), but had his spins and backdrops down to a Tee. No disrespect to the guy (never knew him, but he looked hard!!!!)

Personally I'd rather applaude someone who "feels" the beat.

I disagree. kate rudd from st.ives/huntingdon on a good night was a joy to behold, in all senses of the word. it might have been two records, today's people & babe ruth. could never take my eyes off her. sod all the people sniffing knotty pine at her feet. she was way above them. an agent provocateur, definitely. I'd sooner watch a chick work it on out than the boopers, darges & whizzes of this world, all due respect to them, but I never favoured that particular style of dancing. never thought it was 'soulful' to tell the truth. a question of taste I suppose...

I like seeing acrobatics done well and minimally, although I prefer good smooth unhurried dance moves anyday.

Anyone remember Vernon at Wigan or Sandy?

Acrobatics are a part of NS though and they do look good. Old Keb can dance as well as do the flips and twist etc. (See clip below.)

Fact is we can't do the old flips & twists shite, so go and shuffle over there ..

what about phil ..quinvy and stu tatoo ,,, when they do the harlem rumble it brings tears too my eyes....

I like to find a nice little alcove in clubs these days , so I can nip in there put me bunny rabbit slippers on quick sip of me coco an drag of me pipe...lol and then back at it..oops still got me slippers on...bugger..thats me cred gone

Best spin I ever did was when I tripped over someone's bag, rolled arse over tit, then landed back on me feet.

When I first heard Northern Soul, it was Out On The Floor actually, and those breaks were just right for what I was all about back then. I was a county gymnast so saults, flips, spins were 2nd nature to me and I could pop them into a dance routine quite easily Shucks... not any more though
