The Devil's Work, that is what it is called. They used to burn people for less, bloke called the MP3finder General will be after you.

A DVD has vob files on it.

You will need to convert the flv files to DVD compliant mpeg and then author / burn to DVD.

Here's something a bit weird though - I downloaded a video using the method Craig described, I converted to avi using Replay Converter, but when I played it back - it was upside down!!! Anyone know what the hell thats all about???

Did you have the software running on the Australian default format? You could try turning your telly upside down to put it right (I think ).

Come on, this is serious. I've downloaded about 150 clips now and they play upside down and like a mirror image. I am pretty sure this is down to either missing codecs but I can't work out what to do. I have a program that tells you what codecs are included on a particular film clip but they also show error messages like 'cannot playback video stream - no suitable decompressor could be found'. Anyone else successfully downloaded stuff off youtube and converted it to watchable avi's or mpegs?

Yes - I tried converting to avi and it only gave me audio, but converting to mpg was no problem. I used the Video to Flash converter that was mentioned earlier. They now play on an old version of media player, and I'm sure they are OK with later versions

No still no good, in fact twice as bad using Craigs settings - still upside down, mirror image, and now going too fast. The converter I used was Ultra Video to Flash converter (the setup file is called video2flash.exe). I didn't try the replay converter simply because the UVF thingy worked, although reading the blurb Replay Conv doesn't appear to support .mpg format.

Now I'll ignore AVI format because of the codec problems (seems a new format is created every week!!) and look at mpg.

Any mpg should play fine because it is only one format. I still use an old win98 player version 6.4 which is so old it hurts - but works on ANY mpg I've ever encountered, and the UVF gave me a perfect mpg file. I should point out I'm still a windows 98 user so there is nothing Hi-Tech about my system.

When I installed it the UVF downloader gave me an error on registering the files - I choose 'ignore' and hoped for the best - it worked fine. It may be that a correct installation DOES cock up the outputs.

Is is also possible that if you have BOTH converters installed (UVF and Replay Conv) there is a conflict.

Completely uninstall Replay conv - reboot - Try UVF, outputting to mpg

If no good then Uninstall the UVF - reboot - Reinstall UVF only - Try It

If its still no good then it may get a little tricky ...

If you have confidence to Edit your registry, then you could remove refrences to Ultra Flash and try that --- If not, then make a backup of your UVF Folder (usually located in C:\program files), call it something else.

Then backup these files ...

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\avisynth.dll

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\devil.dll

Completely uninstall UVF and reboot - put your backup copy of UVF folderback in original location, and the above two files. Give it a go.

Worse case is that it won't work, but you can always reinstall it correctly and be back where you were... Upside down, back to front and pulling your hair out.

Let me know if it works, I'll watch this space ....

This has a function called 'flip' which does exactly that, flips the film back to it's original state. I finally did a succesful file at 11.45 last night. The reason I want to do all this is because I bought an Archos AV 700 mobile digital video recorder and it has an astonishing amount of hard drive space (160 hours of video!) so I thought what a great place to keep an archive.

I've put a few things onto dvd and at least 50% are unwatchable because, like you mention, they are 'blocky' due to them being reduced in quality before being uploaded. You can just burn the mpegs straight onto a dvd disc and your dvd should play them

Cheers Pete. Is there no way round this, as surely they were originally meant to be viewed full size? I suppose its to do with the file size for when they are encoded into binary?
