If order expensive books from Canada, am I likely to be charged import duty on them? I know there's no vat on books in the Uk but will they just be classed the same as cd's, records etc when coming into the country?

According to the Taxation and Customs Union Regulations/Decisions 1789/03, base regulation of 1 January 1988 and modified 1 January 2004, printed books, not in single sheets, with a Taric Code of 4901990000, country of origin Canada, carry an import duty of 0%.

Pete a couple of years ago I got a Satnav from the states via eBay, the fookers at customs charged me fifty fookin quid and the royal mail knobbed me for a further eight bleedin quid.

I think it's a lottery mate that's worth playing but some times you will get caught out and have to pay.

Lord knows how they calculate the prices, prob a best guess of some fookin twatt with a clip board?

I've had records stopped by customs and had to pay if the value on the customs sticker is more than $30 but when stopped by customs and value on sticker has been less than $30 I haven't. So looks like it could be a lottery.

Import is due on almost all goods from overseas at 17.5% on anything above £20. Whether you get charged is however complete luck. I get about 90% of my stuff thru with no extra charge, but occassionally get collared by HMG. When buying records/CDs, the seller will often put a nominal amount on the shipping docket for you to avoid charges (especially on used items). However, this is illegal and so none of the larger sellers (Amazon etc) will do this and will always put on the actual value. If I am buying CDs from the US I will often buy them in 2 or 3 lots to avoid charges (although it adds a £ or to to the shipping costs).

I know all about duty on records and cd's thanks anyway, it's books I'm asking about and apparently you do not have to pay duty on books, however as they are charging $177 postage for 3 books I think I am going to give it a miss!

I've had a 'few' deliveries over the years, and have found that if the Customs form is over the corner of the package, I've NEVER been charged for duty on them. When the Customs form is fully visible, I've ALWAYS been charged!!!

Import Duty is usually percentage based. It averages at between about 5% and 9% - but with extremes in some cases between nil and 85%.

If the consigment is liable to Customs Duty, Customs assess the total amount of Customs Duty to be paid based on the value of the goods, plus the transport and insurance costs to the country of destination. Other costs may be included such as tools, dies, moulds, design work, royalties, licence fees.. VAT is then added at 17.5%.

Had a couple of bad experiences with the postman demmanding duty on records before they will hand them over,76 quid for 1 parcel does take the edge off finding bargains in the states.Advised,and always ask seller to send as gifts on the declaration (understand that gifts are very rarely opened for inspection for some reason) and to show a nominal amount e.g. 20 used vinyl records value $20 not had a problem since.Of course this can only be effective if you dont want to pay insurance,but worth the risk i feel,as touch wood not had anything go astray yet (i don`t buy from Germany,previous thread)But surely as all of the items we are buying are at least 20 years old,wouldnt they have had taxes etc payed on them several times in their existance.

If this is the R&B Indies label listings books mate, I bought the first two and didn't have to pay a penny extra. Set me back £55 each (paid for slow boat delivery).

I'll be getting volume 3 soon but back to being skint again.

How much will the duty be...? £50? damn the bloody customs
