He/they recorded a single on Ace in 1966 that I love. ("Won't you let me know"/"You don't love me") I've been trying to find any information about them, without success. Anyone know anything?

I’ve got some stuff from when I was researching John Vincent of ACE…but not much on Gene’s identity etc. I remember a 1966 “gig ad” .

The "Won't You Let Me Know" side is a cover of J.J. Barnes on Rich/Kable, oddly. The flip is a widely recorded blues standard whose best-known version is probably by Willie Cobbs. Yet both sides of the Gene Thompson single credit the Counts as writers! I don't know anything about the identities of Gene or the Counts.

Gary (one of the Walker brothers...) also did a version.

Gene Thompson & The Counts did have a 1966 spot at The Satellite Club, at South Gallatin St, (Jackson, Miss) owned primarily by James W. Norton. I think it was non-alcholic club and certainly had some run-in on licensing at some point.

It's predicatable that John Vicent (Ace) also from Jackson, Miss, had some sort of relationship with Gene Thompson. John more-or-less had the 8th Floor of his Vincent building (previously Millsaps) dedicated to his enterprises...ACE pubbery, Record Pak, Vin Records, Hazel pubbery( his wife), and so on.
