Hi folks , timeline question on Charles Davis who was part of the Dukays / Artistics, and went onto record as Nolan Chance. Did he use that name only after he left Okeh, or did his Constellation records fall between VJ and Okeh?

According to Bob Pruter's book "Chicago Soul", the name Nolan Chance came up when he was signed to Constellation. Someone decided the name Charles Davis wasn't a great stage name so it was changed.

  • And then Bunky, and finally Curtom.

As far as the time line goes, it's Vee Jay then Okeh and finally Constellation.

Before joining The Dukays, Charles Davis (Nolan Chance) was a member of The Trinidads, with his cousin Chuck Colbert (later of The Daylighters), who cut one 45 ("When We're Together) for Don Talty's Formal Records; and also was a member of The Turbo-Jets, who as far as I remember, never had a commercial record released. The Dukays were on Bill ("Bunky" Sheppard's NAT Records, before Sheppard got his production/distribution deal that brought all his artists to VJ Records. I neglected to mention, above, that Chance had also recorded after Curtom, in 1972, with Scepter records, a record titled, "Sara Lee" produced by Eddie Thomas. I don't think it got much airplay, at all, and never saw a store stocker of it, but remember seeing a few DJ copies of it.

And Thomas in between those ?

Cheers Paul

I'm sorry, my octogenarian memory tricked me into remembering Chance's Curtom-Distributed record on the Thomas label, as being on it's parent label, Curtom.
