I've just bought a few dusty / dirty old 7"s and was wondering if anyone knows of where I can get hold of some proper cleaning materials to bring them back to life again?

I remember **YEARS AGO** going to somewhere like Dixons and getting a special oblong shaped cloth thing and some special fluid..... don't suppose they still stock those though!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Look on ebay theres a guy that sells AM cleaning fluid on there. Some specialist HiFi shops also sell a sort of tank that you spin the record in to clean it about £50 ..failing that luke warm water and fairy liquid has always been good for me.

I've got one of these and the results are very good, but you may want to try something a bit cheaper first, like this brush and cleaner kit on eBay.

There's a complete Knosti kit on eBay at the moment, currently at 99p with nearly 3 days to go - eBay link -

and I love the description "...a very rare VINTAGE Record Cleaner made in W.Germany."

Of course, if money were no object I'd get this cleaning machine...

I've got one of these Moth cleaning machines and it's very good for albums, works on the same principal as the VPI using a vacuum method. Having said that, to clean singles, I just put them on the deck, spray them with a mix of 75% isopropol alcohol 25% water, rub it in, play the record while it's still wet, dry it with a tissue - and that's equally as good as a cleaning machine. I would have though a splash of vinigar might help too as that seems to clean anything. When I get records which have dirt grained in, I use that small electro magnetic jewellery cleaning machine I got from aldi - you rotate the disc in a small water filled bath (small meaning about 3" deep) and an electro magnetic or electro static charge goes through the water and you can actually see dirt coming out of the grooves. Finally, do not attempt to wash your records in a dishwasher. I know someone who did, with tragic results.

They get them in now and again but not seen for about a year - was only 15 quid.

Yeah, tap water - but I haven't seen Aldi doing these for a while mate, no doubt you can get one off ebay

save yourself some money,go to tesco and get some glass cleaner its about a quid a bottle ,usually blue in colour and in a squirty spray bottle,this is isoproponol based as pete said ,its the same stuff as these people are selling as record cleaner
