maybe this has been done before, but i thought it may be worth a shout to find out what turned people to this great music.listening to grace jones on ken bruce playing 3degrees "dirty ol man" which along with "year of decision" were faves of mine at the time.the records i remember turning me onto soul (apart from the obvious motown) were DON DOWNING "LONELY DAYS, LONELY NIGHTS" AND EDDIE KENDRICKS "KEEP ON TRUCKING" and b4 that "yesterday has gone CUPID'S INSPIRATION, all great imho! would be nice for some of the "older" guys and gals on here to recall their teenage soul faves!

Think we may be the same age?!... loved ALL the tracks you mention... I can smell my youth when i hear'Hey girl dont bother me' wicked tune! what year was that?.. My mum was into soul music though she didnt know it so got the vibe from her. In fact all 6 of my brothers and sisters were into tamla/atlantic etc.. we were convinced we had black roots somewhere back in our ancestry and still do! or was that wishful thinking... sweet thread x

well i'm 47(for 2 wks anyway) and the tams was in charts about 71 i think so maybe we are! lots more from around the time, e.holman "lonely girl" tymes,ms grace, little trustmaker, just better music than sweet, showadawaddy, peido gary etc!

Late 60's youth club hearing motown, Tony Blackburn playing 6 by 6 every day then someone brought a copy of th right track to the club and I was hooked

regards

Ian

1969 after being fed a diet of Beatles and Stones hearing black music at my local youth club was a turning point for me , Prince Buster and Arthur Conlley music you dance to .

First soul club was the Pendulum in Manchesterand the first allnighter the Casino about xmas 73 .

It was the only music played in our house but i remember my dad having a cd of Wigan oldies that i would play over & over again that really got me into it. Especially Judy Street-what & Beverley Ann-you've got your mind on other things which i would have on repeat, so much so that my dad can't listen to these records now! :D

My Daughter who is 5 keeps asking me have I got Beverly Ann - You got your mind on other things. - It drives me round the twist.

First soul record that influenced me was Edwin Starr - He who picks a rose and WAR because the lyrics never seem to date - which is sad!

Mine was 12 years old going to my first disco and then bouncing around thinking this is great having an eye on some girl. Then there was the older guys who on there arrival handed some records over to the guy doing the disco.

Then on came this record loud fast intro not like the usual disco stuff that they were playing then the strong vocal shouting at me Right I want you people out there to listen to me and then Black Power Black Power. Watching these guys some of which were quiet hard in the area and there they were dancing on there own, doing strange backdrops and spins splits.

One of the guys went out with my mates sister so I asked him to tell me more he gave me a tape then I got taken to an alldayer.

Then a year later staying with a freind (well so my parents thought) and Saturday morning coming out of Clouds Allnighter Edinburgh 13 years old all happy and turning the corner and seeing my dads lorry coming towards me *HIT.

Then soon It was saving dinner money and climbing in the window I had left open and my first trip to Wigan sitting on a coach with all these poeple and getting to Charnock Richard services on M6 and every one getting changed into there dancing clothes and suddenly everyone getting a cold and sniffing.

And been in my blood ever since!!!!
