More Source 6 Pacs from 2001 onwards
Following on from our recent trip to the Soul Source archives last month (see previous article), here's a few more 6 Pacs that needed bringing back online and then archiving .... 2 x 6-pacs from Irish Greg, Carl Fortnum and Alan H 2001 Dome - CSC 6 pacs galore Notes below all from that time... 2001 Posted on Monday, September 24 2001 @ 20:06:33 BST Topic: Soul Sounds Soul Sounds Yeah its that time again, time for one of the premier soul nites around, CSC friday nite bash at the Dome London. To get you in the mood (or let you know what you're missing) have put together 2 x 6-pacs from Irish Greg, Carl Fortnum and Alan H Session 1 Anita Anderson - Secretly - Contact Bogus Chimes - I think you find-Champ Dee and Floo -This or That - Dee Wolf prod Tony Clarke - No Conception -MS Martha Starr - Sweet Temptation - Charay Eddie Campell -Contagious Love-Artco Session 2 Johnny Watson - Cause I love you - cover up Shadows -This is not the end-Audio Unlimited Tammi Levon - Clothes dont make a man - Nation Fawns - Nothing but love can save me - Cap City Chances - It takes more than love alone- Bea Baby Eddie King & Mae B May - Please Mr Dj ------------------------------------------------------------------- Nick "Driveller" Brown Sessions 2001 Notes below all from that time... 2001 To coincide with the forthcoming Notre Dame event on Feb 16th at Leicester Square London, we have the fortune to have two great session's selected by your man Nick "Driveller" Brown, promoter and dj at the event which is happening on the 16 Feb 2001. Session 1 PIC AND BILL : WHAT DOES IT TAKE (CHARAY) Merciless northern soul scorcher that's remained inexplicably unknown till now. another spot-on killer from the best male duo in soul music. DOC &THE INTERNS : THE LOVE THAT YOU GIVE (EDGEWOOD ACETATE) Thunderous dc floorshaker, presumably recorded for now but left in the backroom. Absolutely made for the scene, with its piledriver beat, wall-quaking bass and football-chant chorus. It's even got a bit near the end for the acrobats to show off their stuff. Did they know something? MARGARET MANDOLPH: If You Ever Need Me (PLANETARY) One of four excellent sides Margaret recorded for Planetary. This is from the earlier 45, from November '64, and is a lovely, atmospheric mid-tempo stepper. EDDIE GILES: Losing Boy (MUCRO) Unbelievably, a big hit with the ravers at the Heavenly Social a few years ago, but virtually unknown on the Northern scene. If you're quick, you might still get this cheap, so look out for this driving, staxy mid-pacer with its air of chin-up determination and gritted-teeth optimism. Builds like a skyscraper. SHIRLEY EDWARDS: Dream My Heart ( SHRINE) The version originally used for the single, for the benefit of those who have only heard it on the CD. My number one all-time favourite record of any sort, EVER! ANITA ANDERSON: Secretly (CONTACT) Flip of the wonderful "Little Bit Longer", and often cited as being the more "Northern" side. Here's a chance to hear it if you haven't yet. Check out the 3-D echo on that break! SESSION 2 THE FOUR REPUTATIONS: Call On Me (MILLAGE) Definitely NOT the same record as the Presentations, despite what people say on their sales lists! A pressing plant slip-up meant this never got a release but thank goodness SOME of the copies escaped the crusher! Absolutely perfect allnighter Soul. THE EXCEPTIONS: Baby You Know I Need You (IMPACT SOUND acetate) A cross over in-demander on its 68 release on Groovey Grooves, but this is the unreleased original version from 66 and it KICKS!!!! the classic sound of mid 60s Philly epitomised in two minutes of dancefloor dynamite! JEAN DU SHON: It Won't Stop Hurting Me (LENNOX) Her okeh piece is going seriously big with the r+b fans , but I've always rated this as her best moment. Sophisticated Big City Soul with just a touch of raw edge, all wrapped up in a smooth, mid tempo flow of impassioned yearning. Had a couple of copies in the 80s , but haven't seen another for about 10 years. Serious class GALLAHADS : I've Got To Find A Way (BEECHWOOD) Irrepressible group dancer bursting with energy and sprirt, plus that irresistable "wait for it " intro. Been a popular sound with the newies crowd for a good few years, but this i one's real day is still to come. DON AND JUAN: All That's Missing Is You (MALA) Tasty portion of Early Soul from the ever reliable Claude and Roland. Highly rated by many since the Stafford era, but it's another one that's still waiting for the exposure it needs to make it cross over TRANELLS: My Love - (Cover-up) One of those raw primitive recording that you take one listen to and you just KNOW how rare it is but once you cut through the three layers of carpet around the microphone and the tin bath it was recorded in , you've got a relentlessly hypnotic dancer tat drives along on a insistent hook and boasts a creditably sound vocal. Puts me in mind of a group reworking of Silky Hargreaves "Hurt by Love". Hauntingly atmospheric with an addictive riff. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Irish Greg - A 12 Pac From September 2003 A double 6 pac as in twelve quality tracks rather than the six from Irish Greg notes below from that time... 2003 1.Ocar Perry - Face Reality - Feron £500 one. A very rare disc and got some spins at Stafford. Get Hunting on Ebay! 2. Explosive Dynamiks - Whole Lotta Love - Leirco Current CSC monster - see "Carefree" review edition one 3. Starlighters - I never Thought -Durimen Future monster so get hunting for this uptempo beauty value ?? £150 plus 4. Johnny McCall - I need You - Alteen One of current csc spins from Flynny, value 70+ one day this will be massive 5. Jobetters - No Explanation - Kevin Value £40 Dont know much about this one just that its got it all plus B-side 6. Steelers - Just Begining To Love you - Crash see "Carefree" review 7. OV Wright - Nerve To Cry - Backbeat lp see carefree review 8 Jesse Davis - Never For Your Love - Cover up Current Paul McNamara spin 9. Blenders - Tale Of Sadness -DJO £100 Chicago I think -semi known 10. Fenways - The Fight -Blue Cat £30 (Get it quick) A record that will go if djs spin it. Remind me of shrine - enough said? 11. Jobettes - What You Going To Do - Kevin Flipside to "no explanation" and for £40 you just cant be wrong 12. Johnny De'Vigne - I Smell Trouble - Delite Highly in demand but very rarely heard expect when spun by Dave Holt and Paul Baldwin (£80+) Plus could be speeded up a bit more. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Thats that, three from 2001 and a double one from 2003 All the above 6 Pacs and the previous ones featured in the earlier article are now stored on mixcloud. Hope you enjoyed this revisit as much as I did!

Dave Godin A Northern Soul Part 2
From the author Stephen Stevlor, a catchup all about how the release of Dave Godin A Northern Soul is going ... Within days of being made available, (launched 15th October 2020, the 16th anniversary of Dave's passing), over a third of this limited edition 1000 print book had been mailed nationwide and throughout the world with books shipping to Norway, Finland, Holland, Italy, Spain, Australia, Canada, USA and Japan. "I knew the book would be of interest because it wasn't just a collection of stories and anecdotes about the Northern Soul scene but concerned a specific character who, although many people in the Soul world were aware of, many of the Northern Soul foot soldiers or, as Dave would call them "the TRUE keepers of the faith!", had little or no idea of this man's importance or existence. This was one of the reasons the biography came about, I got the impression that he wasn't as high profile as he should have been within a scene that he'd given a specific identity to. Plus there were the other facets of his life that unless you were involved in animal rights, or civil rights or the hundreds of other causes Dave championed, you just wouldn't have been aware of. Dave Godin had many sides, to some he was a true gentleman, to others a complete tyrant. Some people loved him without reserve while others, whom I attempted to interview, hated him so much they wouldn't even take the opportunity to destroy him in print, they didn't even want to mention his name. When the book came out I had a lovely letter from a lady who knew Dave back in the day and she mentioned she actually owned a lock of his hair! I immediately imagined, maybe, some kind of romantic liason, while a DJ friend of mine commented "or maybe she just ripped it out of his head when he pissed her off!" Personally, from the impression she gave, I'm sticking with the former!" COMMENTS FROM BOOK PURCHASES: "A great book about the Godfather of Soul!" "Congratulations on what is an enthralling, absorbing and thoroughly entertaining book." "The story itself is excellent and covers all the bases of this man's extraordinary life." "A beautiful book, congratulations". "Should make a film about it." "What an achievement, this book is part of Northern Soul Biblical history!" "The Covid 19 pandemic messed up my promo plans, having to cancel signing events at all-nighters and weekenders around the country. Copies of the biography weren't going to be available in book shops and record stores until nearer Christmas so I was surprised to see it listed on well-known internet book sites offering the book for sale and ready to order when they hadn't actually approached me to discuss stocking it. Some had even taken payment in advance, so I would like to make it clear that these bookstores DO NOT have the book so don't pay them anything. Because of this I've started supplying stock to selected Independent shops in various UK towns and cities, limiting it to just one or two depending on the size of the area- Tallbird Records Chesterfield Beatin' Rhythm Manchester Mark Windle Leeds Soulmine Aldershot Stars-and-Stripes Skegness LP Record Store and Spinning Discs Sheffield. Any Independent interested in stocking the book, please email me." "A lot of people seemed surprised by the quality of the book and the production values. I think they expected pages of smudgy text on pulp paper with a few photographs thrown in. It is a very good looking book and a lot of time was spent making sure, wherever possible, that all the avenues of Dave's life were well illustrated. As somebody commented the other day, "It's a coffee table book that fits on a bookshelf!" Fully featured preview article can be read here https://www.soul-source.co.uk/articles/soul-articles/dave-godin-a-northern-soul-book-preview-r4299/ DAVE GODIN A NORTHERN SOUL is still available by mail £29.99 (FREE UK POSTAGE) email stevlor@hotmail.co.uk for payment details.
