  8. Young Soul Rebels: A Personal History of Northern Soul Just a heads up if you have been waiting for this book. Blurb: Young Soul Rebels is the latest book from Stuart Cosgrove and has just been published recently, it does appears that the planned release date was pushed forward Northern soul is the ultimate underground music scene. Hidden away from the mainstream, it has defied the logic of fashion and outlasted more visible youth culture movements such as punk and rave. Author Stuart Cosgrove is an insider who has been a well-known collector on the scene for decades. Here he takes the reader on a rollercoaster journey to the stubborn heart of soul music's secret society and the legendary clubs that became the cathedrals of rare soul: the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Golden Torch in Stoke, Wigan Casino, the Top of the World in Stafford, and the evergreen 100 Club. As in the author's cult book Detroit 67, Young Soul Rebels tells a wider social history, looking at the all-nighters and the flamboyant characters who shaped the scene, the obsessive collecting of rare vinyl, the amphetamine abuse, police raids on soul clubs, the north–south divide, the Yorkshire Ripper murders, the miners' strike, the collapse of the industrial north, bootlegging and the rise of new technologies, which against all expectations have breathed new life into the scene. This is a candid and witty story of the cult they couldn't tame. Young Soul Rebels nails a scene that is as popular today as it was in its heyday in the 1970s. Stuart Cosgrove, originally from Perth, was a fanzine writer on the northern soul scene before joining the black music paper Echoes, as a staff writer. He became media editor with the NME and a feature writer for a range of newspapers and magazines. A graduate of Hull University, he completed a PhD in modern American theatre history. In 2005 he was named Broadcaster of the Year in the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards and in 2012 he won numerous awards including a BAFTA and Royal Television Society award for Channel 4’s coverage of the London Paralympics 2012. Both Paperback and Kindle Versions now available (use link below for kindle preview) More info via the links below Review A featured review by Dave Rimmer is planned to follow this Monday all being well

  10. The Ohio Players are one of the most successful funk outfits of all time, scoring monster crossover hits in the 1970s like "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster." They took funk into uncharted territory, bringing a jazzy, free form feel to chart-toppers like "Skin Tight," "Heaven Must Be Like This," and "Sweet Sticky Thing." Along the way, The Players — with monikers like Sugarfoot, Diamond, and Rock– lived up to their names, with super-sexy album covers that got nearly as much attention as their songs, and by lifestyle excesses that led to a major drug bust. Their notoriety was so extreme that the group was rumored to have killed someone during a recording session with the dying screams mixed into the grooves of a song. http://tvone.tv/5605/ohio-players/

  15. yep the automatic import of profile locations has thrown a fair few odd things up like that where given single locations (such as town names) goto a different country than you would expect as the profiles were just a simple text entry theres no way the import feature knew what country cheshire is another one, and yorkshire also goes to usa , perth is another wtih australia perth being first in line, then there's odd stuff like 'soulville', 'up north' etc etc that didnt convert well if people put cheshire, united kingdom, or cheshire, usa then it takes but as members check and rectify their locations and as am going thtu the locations myself as time allows .. then it should be a ever decreasing thing

  18. Soul Map Upgraded - New Features and Improvements View full article
  19. Just a shout about the latest upgrade to the Soul Map feature Quite an extensive upgrade ... 1. New Marker Groups Map markers are now grouped, opening up this feature for many uses. SoulMap markers can now be viewed and added into these various marker groups Members location - Integrated with Profiles (only one per member) Venues - Current Venues - Historical Labels, studios etc Record Shops These groups can be expanded so if there are some groups that you may think be useful additions then just let us know 2. Members Locations Markers Now Integrated with Profiles The members locations are now integrated with the Profiles location field eg if you enter an location on your profile (location setting) then it will also be picked up and added to the SoulMap automatically (if found) at the same time. This has been done for all active members account with a location entered - you may need to check your own as it is an automatic process and so subject to errors if location details not clear This has meant that there are now 4000+ active members location markers now showing in the Soul Map 3. All members can now add locations to any of the groups directly All members can add their location plus any other markers. To add you just follow the 'browse to markers' link and then the 'add marker' will show in the top right of every marker list page 4. Future Now this is in place it means the next wave of improvements will include more direct Event Guide integration and more Links Can be found via the top menu under SoulMap Soul Map https://www.soul-source.co.uk/membermap/ Browse and Add Markers https://www.soul-source.co.uk/membermap/markers/ Screenshots The Main Map Page Marker Groups Page The 'Add Marker' Links SoulMap Feature Link https://www.soul-source.co.uk/membermap/

  21. 1999 Mark Leckey's short film Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore note - refreshed the video location as the youtube has been removed The work, a video, is a compilation of found footage from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s underground music and party scene in the U.K. It follows on the path of several previous appropriative art video artists and critics have remarked on its similarities with William S. Burroughs' technique of cut-ups, a literary technique whereupon a text’s sentences or words are cut up and later randomly re-hashed into a new text. Through “found and original footage of discos and raves across Britain during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s” he “chronicle the rites of passage experienced by successive generations of British (sub)urban youth”. Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore patches up several videos of young people dancing, singing and partying. It starts with the disco scene of the 1970s, touches upon the Northern soul of the late 1970s and early 1980s and climaxes with the rave scene of the 1990s. One underlying soundtrack plays during the whole video, giving a sense of unity and narrative to the video. At one point an animated element - a bird tattoo image - appears as if released from the hand of a dancer, then carried into the next shot finds its place on the arm of another of the film's nightclubbing subjects. Some dance moves are played on loop for a few seconds, some are played in slow motion. Writing about Leckey’s first few video pieces, which in addition to Fiorucci… include We Are (Untitled) (2000) and Parade (2003), the art critic Catherine Wood said that they “represent the human subject striving to spread itself out into a reduced dimensionality. His subjects dance, take drugs and dress up in their attempts to transcend the obstinate physicality of the body and disappear in abstract identification with the ecstasy of music, or the seamlessness of the image.”
  22. deezer was good as it had a 3 month free trial - maybe still avail ? microsoft groove is yet another one, a good point for me is it integrates with your onedrive music folder hard to keep up at times with all the various services and what they offer though seems to be merging into the following options free: 30 sec clips free free: full clips with adverts subscription: full tracks no adverts ------------------------------------------------------- deezer and spotify both embed on here and should display tracks/clips depending on your sub - eg if not logged in - 30 seconds clips logged in either full clips with or without adverts depending on your subscription spotify link as in https://open.spotify.com/album/1A7X9BaDZLIzyUDx6pkhZC deezer different album https://www.deezer.com/album/12323286 becomes though do note the number of tracks seems to be limited 12 rather than 24 in the first case and similar in the second ?
