Help Please
The Bobby Paris/ H.B. Barnum is almost certainly genuine - released on UK Capitol back in 1979.

Don't agree with that one little bit but 'chacun a son gout'. I always felt that the mix of the original Gwen Owens was poor - great tune though it is. In fact, I like 'You Better Watch Out' much better but that's only my opinion and I wouldn't slag anybody off for thinking differently. I can certainly agree with remakes of classic films like 'Get Carter', 'Psycho', '39 Steps', etc., etc. - you can't better perfection. However, the case for Gwen Owens is not the same - Ian has stated on many occasions that he could not use the originals for contractual reasons. I'm sure we'd all like to see original footage in B&W from the 60s but it doesn't exist so we can't. I'm also sure that his intention was not to improve it but to complement the original. I suggest if you don't like it don't bother watching it and leave it to those who do appreciate it.

Ian Levine, Motorcity, Centre City, Blackpool Mecca, And Swons
My copy of the DVD arrived this morning and I've just watched the first disc and it's fabulous. The videos are crisp and (almost) totally lacking in gimmicky effects which makes it totally watchable. Some tracks are obviously better than others but it is fantastic opportunity to see all the artists who, at one time, we could only dream of seeing and some, sadly, who we will never see again. Ian, you've done a fantastic job - you have every reason to be proud you have created a unique historical (and highly entertaining) document which everyone who loves soul music should own. As far as the Gwen Owens video being called an abomination - words fail me. Why? I don't care that it isn't the original backing track. I don't care that it isn't the original vocal. I don't care that Gwen Owens is getting older - we all are. It's just great to be able to see her on the screen. If I wanted to hear the original I'd dig out the CD (no I don't believe in spending megabucks on vinyl - I just like the music). Now all I need is another few hours to watch the other four discs. Thanks again Ian - one of the best £25.98 I have ever spent.

Levi Stubbs And 4 Tops Tribute - Acapella Ask The Lonely
Awesome soundclip. Remember seeing the Tops in the late 70s in Bournemouth and they did an absolutely brilliant accapella song as part of their set. Sadly the decaying brain cells have removed which one it was from my memory!

Easy to do - just dig out a copy of 'Elusive' by Babe Ruth which was big on the scene in the mid 70s - instant integrated prog rock. https://www.baberuthband.co.uk/thesingles/single07elusive.htm- J D Bryant On Ebay
Looks like it went for $10,230.00 then.- Which Came First
- Which Came First
Covered up as Moses Smith and speeded up by Simon Soussan, I believe, before being pressed and dropped from play lists as was the norm in those days. The Epitome of Sound was played later at the correct speed and pressed again with a photocopied label. Much better IMO at the correct speed.- Any Sampled Tunes
MC Hammer's 'You Can't Touch This' was a huge chart hit sampling the late Rick James' 'Superfreak'.- Any Sampled Tunes
Though not soul, the Blue Note series 'Blue Break Beats vol. 1-4' is an interesting selection of sampled tunes (mainly jazz funk) with the odd soul artist thrown in - Ike and Tina Turner, Marlena Shaw, Lou Rawls. Worth checking out if you like jazz grooves.- Any Sampled Tunes

Just ordered my copy and it's ridiculously cheap at £25.98 if you go with the FREE Super Saver Delivery. Really looking forward to seeing the new videos without the garish effects. I don't know how any soul fan can afford not to buy one at that price!- Ian Levine, Motorcity, Centre City, Blackpool Mecca, And Swons

Definitely remember it being played at the Casino, probably '75.- Ian Levine, Motorcity, Centre City, Blackpool Mecca, And Swons
Thanks for putting that one up. It's a beautiful version of a classic song. It's always difficult to produce a new take on a song which has a definitive version (Esther Phillips imo) but this one comes pretty close.- Jackie Wilson Live In The 70s?
I saw him on 15th June 1975 at the Casino. He suffered a massive heart attack on stage at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hiil, New Jersey whilst, apparently singing "Lonely Teardrops' and remained in a PVS until he died on 21st January 1984 aged 49 - a sad loss to soul music.- Why Can't I Get This Without A Mortgage?
Pretty sure it was played at the Mecca as a new release back in 1977.- Willie Kendricks.change Your Ways
The album 'Just A little Bit of Soul' came out in 1969 on RCA International (Camden). As well as Willie Kendricks it has another old Northern 'biggie' the Exciters 'Blowing Up My Mind' and a variety of R&B, funk and deep soul tracks. Track Listing: Steve Colt and the 45s - Just A little Bit of Soul Johnny Nash - I'm Leaving Rick Lancelot - Nobody Wants To Hear Nobody's Troubles Willie Kendrick - Change Your Ways Benny Gordon and the Soul Brothers - A Kiss To Build A Dream On The Wilson Brothers - Soul Town The Insiders - I'm Better Off Without You The Exciters - Blowing Up My Mind Zerben R.
