  1. As with most of Jackie O's songs, topdrawer, Claudio...though they don't get a gold medal from me - my favourites (SOLID ROCK, THE LORD IS WITH ME and I AM WHAT I AM) I've had since about 1969 or 1970, so they're long in my consciousness, while the two you mention I've only had on CD for about 12 years...
  2. Ric Tic Relics immediately sprang to mind B) B) ...and the Contours' BABY HIT AND RUN (Music for Pleasure MFP50054 / 1974) A side 1. JUST A LITTLE MISUNDERSTANDING / 1966 2. FIRST I LOOK AT THE PURSE / 1965 3. CAN YOU JERK LIKE ME? / 1964 4. IT'S GROWING / 1966 5. BABY HIT AND RUN / 1966 6. IT'S SO HARD BEING A LOSER / 1967 B side 1. CAN YOU DO IT? / 1964 2. DETERMINATION / 1966 3. IT MUST BE LOVE / 1963 4. DON'T LET HER BE YOUR BABY / 1963 5. SHAKE SHERRIE / 1962 6. DO YOU LOVE ME? / 1962
  3. I got the Boz Scaggs "MY TIME (1969-1997)" 2_CD anthology for my birthday - very informative potted bio sleevenotes, with the date and musicians listed for each tune - and the music's pretty sound (though a bit MOR in places) too B) B) Thanks for the help
  4. As one who was born in Coronation week, my tastes always leant towards the 63-78 era. But in the last 10 years or so, I've come to appreciate digital, Dancehall etc - so I love RIKER'S ISLAND - I doubt it's worth a packet, though...
  5. An undoubted anthem! The B side shouldn't be overlooked either...
  6. Have you asked Athers, Tony?
  7. Any of the uptempo Motown hits I heard on the radio in 1965-66...
  8. When I was a lad back in the early 70s, I... a. knew no one else who liked Northern Soul to any great degree, b. had very little money and... c. had no transport, so I never went to a Northern Soul night. I still haven't been to one and at the moment, a. and b. still apply
  9. Thanks, newone. I'm well-enough aware of Boz Scaggs, but avoided buying his stuff back in the 70s - probably because a. it wasn't soulful enough to my ears, so b. the snob in me wouldn't let me shell out any hard-earned on music other than Soul-Disco and Reggae. ...having heard LOWDOWN sampled at least 20 times today, while trying desperately to remembere what the tunes was, maybe I should invest in at least a "Best of..." ...when I eventually get a job and some money
  10. Great - thanks, John B) B) ...and so quick I was wrong. I don't have the tune - I've no Boz Scaggs at all, in fact. So I was talking tosh...again.
  11. Someone over at Trojan has asked what tune is being sampled by MF Doom and Wu Tang Clan. It's a piece of late 70s or early 80s Jazz-Funk or "Club" Soul. I have the tune, but I'm blowed if I can dig the tune out of my head or find it in my database It's here - it's mostly the opening bars, but right at the end several indistinct sung words creep into the sample: https://www.box.net/shared/js0h63iulq It's probably (very) obvious. Please can someone put me out of my misery? ...musically, that is Many thanks
  12. I have it on Bamboo's SOLID GOLD L.P. (BDLP212) from 1970, Pete. Great tune B) I don't think it got a U.K. single release back then - I can't believe a 7" re-press has NEVER happened... It's appeared on Soul Jazz's STUDIO ONE ROCKERS CD: https://www.souljazzrecords.co.uk/releases/?id=176 Ernest also re-worked it for his 1996 album BELOW THE BASSLINE (Island Jamaica Jazz IJCD4002), which contains a host of covers of JA tunes. Sound clips here.. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Below-Bassline-Ern...n/dp/B000001EA6

    I'm an optimist ...sometimes.

    ...or half as common
  15. Super tune B) - I only have on CD, I'm afraid.
  16. I used to buy singles and L.P.s sort of blind - by that I mean based on recommendations I'd read in B&S. Most stuff didn't get played on the radio and I didn't have transport, much cash or any like-minded souls who wanted to travel to "nights". The only time I bought a "placemat" was when I shelled out for Lonnie Hill's "You Got Me Running" L.P. in 1984, because I quite liked GALVESTON BAY - B&S hadn't given tha good write up, but I ignored that. The L.P. has been played once and remains filed away as a salutory reminder of comparative youth.
  17. Best? Black Water Gold (Pearl) ~ African Music Machine (CS9002) Cool Jerk ~ Capitols (CS9030) Follow The Wind ~ Midnight Movers (CS9018) Worst? I never bought any "worst" on that label, though I did buy several less-than-satisfying on the Contempo label.
  18. Definitely... I don't hate the song and never have.
  19. Thanks for that info, Chris. Link here (scroll down) - tracks highlighted in blue have sound samples... https://www.reggaehitthetown.com/BLPF.htm
  20. I only have this 'pon Soul Jazz's STUDIO ONE WOMEN album (SJRCD121) - there's no info about whether this was a singlein the liner notes.
  21. ...and each classics of the so-called "skinhead reggae" genre.
  22. All suitable in their own way: Arrival - FRIENDS Bobby Bland - TO BE FRIENDS Leon Haywood - YOU NEED A FRIEND LIKE MINE Abba - THE WAY OLD FRIENDS DO Sister Sledge - YOU'RE A FRIEND TO ME Roberta & Donny, plus Various versions - YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND Shalamar - FRIENDS Simon & Garfunkel - OLD FRIENDS Beatles / Joe Cocker / Santana / Joe Brown / Young Idea - WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS Frankie Paul - FRIENDS Clarendonians - MEY BIEN (MY FRIEND)
  23. I read a while ago that flattening a record will only make it playable, but won't correct the problem of the sound change caused by the original warping of the groove. I don't do ironing
  24. It was certainly one that our local Skinheads would love to stomp around to, Tony.
  25. BI546 - I have a label scan handy (takes me back to my youth - a favourite at the local community centre):
