The Wailers' tune is nothing better than a crappy cover of a Curtis Mayfield song. IMHO

My JB226 cost me 1/6d in 1969 and in 1971, I was offered £5. I'm no expert as I generally don't sell records, but as I'd also bought a second copy for about 10p in Portobello Rd. one Saturday in 1971, I traded the double last year for around £35-£40 of records with Mike Atherton. Whether that was too little or too much, I don't know, but the arrangement was mutually satisfactory.
  3. Would it have been this one Tony? From Tapir's: JB 113 Clive & Gloria With The Blue Flames - Change Of Plan // Little Gloria 1963 From my UK 7 - no mention of the Blue Flames (and no aural sign on "Gloria", though musically (my fading memory suggests) it sounds like them. Have a listen... https://www.box.net/shared/4bkm06rr76 I wonder who "Clive" and "Gloria" were...
  4. I forgot to add there's a version (of SITTING IN THE PARK) by Dr. Alimantado - purists beware!
  5. I expanded the IE page to 400% and still can't make out the signature...
  6. It's one of those grand songs that it's difficult to ruin. Out of the 6 different versions I have, I find Owen Gray's the "thinnest" and Freddie McGregor's surprisingly good, while liking all of them. The original versions aren't always the best...
  7. All in "glorious" 64kbps sound... Owen Gray... https://www.box.net/shared/p78d00uv0t Freddie McGregor... https://www.box.net/shared/pa5ick47dt Dread Flimstone etc... https://www.box.net/shared/ko2g1m5fet
  8. Just sorting out Owen Gray's, Freddie McGregor's and Dread Flimstone's... Gimme a few minutes
  9. It's a great song - I have (separate) Reggae versions by Slim Smith (1971), Owen Gray (1968), Freddie McGregor (c. 1982) and Dread Flimstone & the Modern Tone Age Family (1991)... ...as well as the Georgie Fame and Billy Stewart workouts. I thought Wilfred 'Jackie' Edwards had recorded it as well - if he did, it's passed my collection by ...
  10. ...and the B side might be called WANDERING - if so, both also appeared on the (apparently) hard-to-find IN MIAMI L.P. (TRLS131), that Trojan re-issued with bonus tracks in 2004 (TJACD158). Both tunes produced by King Sporty (aka Noel Williams), who was/is Betty Wright's husband. Tracklisting of the original L.P. (from Tapir's): TRLS 131 Chosen Few - The Chosen Few In Miami Tracks: Night And Day / I'm A Man / In The Rain / Wandering / Funky Buttercup // Candy I'm So Daggone Mixed Up / Why Can't We Live / Drift Away / Daniel / Hit Me With Music
  11. There are a few more at the end of this list: https://www.xs4all.nl/~tapirs/action7.htm To which I can add: ACT4609 - Eddie Bo ~ CHECK YOUR BUCKET c/w CHECK YOUR BUCKET PT. 2 (1973) Label scan available if required.
  12. Studio One as far as I know, Lord...though there's no indication on the Ska Beat (JB227) single.
  13. And for someone who doesn't have a great deal of Northern and less-obvious Soul - certainly not in the way of vinyl rarities, Goldmine Soul Supply turned out some top CDs. Though I still get some of my best listening pleasure on this label from the first release ("Essential Northern Soul Story, The")
  14. Looks like a "must have" set...
  15. He did. When I mentioned above about CR being a "belter", I couldn't actually place the tune, but I knew it was a top tune. When I heard it last night, I thought "this is a killer", but it took a further 30 seconds to place it as CANTELOUPE ROCK. ...so is CANTELOUPE ISLAND (an 'andsome choon), of course I'll get me coat...
  16. I posted the rest of the pictures I took in the similar topic on Trojan... https://www.trojanrecords.co.uk/forum/viewt...p?p=58320#58320 I prefer Ska over Rocksteady almost any day, so a few Top deck "blisterers" wouldn't have gone amiss with me. If you mean young Ash from Slough (in one of the pictures above), of course he was there. He posts as Aquarius on Pama and simpleton on Chatty Mouth: https://z7.invisionfree.com/PAMA_FORUM/index.php?showforum=23 Ash also apologised for not introducing Commandewr K (Ralf) !!! Hope you had a decent journey home - my 30 miles across London still took the thick end of 2 hours (I dropped Gordon off, more or less on the way)
  17. Some selected pictures...I took a few more. Penny (pondering the re-press that Tommy's playing) and Tommy Bob Brooks What's Steve Rice (right) telling Peter Levy? Phil "Please buy some tunes" Etgart Tim P "in the zone" Ash struck lucky Gordy and Mikey
  18. Good to meet and have a chat Dave (birder66), thanks for coming over and seeking me out Posted also on Trojan / Pama / Chatty Mouth I can't say how good this "do" was, since I've never been to one before and have nowt to compare it with, but there were certainly some great Ska, Rocksteady and reggae tunes dropped - nothing after about 1971 nor before about 1962. Musically, the evening was warmed up by someone I never caught the name of and then Richie. Bob Brooks MCed the main "Penny vs. Tommy" event. I recognised more tunes from both than I expected - Penny's were the more familiar to these ears, with CONGO WAR among the ones I knew getting a welcome airing and a few of Tommy's were irritatingly familiar. However, Tommy dropped an absolute belting, bass-heavy Caltone killer that I didn't know - got the floor going and about 20 minutes later, Penny tossed in an early '69 Studio One tune that floored me with its rhythm and vocal harmonies (didn't do much for Pilot though!). ...and one of them played an excellent Jackie Mittoo version of Dave 'baby' Cortez's HAPPY ORGAN. 'nuff other tunes I knew/had, but couldn't place. No "chin strokers" either. Great to catch up with a few known faces and brilliant to meet some new ones - 3 or 4 lads came up and introduced themselves to me saying they recognised me from my forum picture. Not bad, as it's almots 5 years old! The place was almost full - enough to have to say "excuse me" to move around, but not so full that you couldn't move at all. A great night let down only by the variation of sound quality, some tunes sound too lightweight (not enough bass) and occasional bouts of feedback. Some argued that the music wasn't loud enough. Respect and good wishes and apologies to any I've forgotten to (in alphabetical order): Ash (Aquarius) Ben (Benj 43) Dave Home Dave Mack (Birder66) Gordon (DJ Greedy G) Hugh (Conscoius Pilot) and Marianda Ian (Mrs. Trellis) Matt (BBR / bigboyrock) Matt (Bedward) Matt (Matty-j) Mikey (Mento Man / Big Mikey Dread) - hope you get sorted work-wise soon enough Nick (skanick) Paul (Port-O-Jam) Penny Reel Peter Levy Phil (Enthucol) Rey (lankou2) Ringo Richie (aka Richie) Steve (stevethehat) Steve Rice (kid bingo) Tim (timp) Toby (MSE / Mr. Swing easy) Chris Lane, Dave Hendley, Asher D were also there and I'd hoped to catch Commander K, but never did (someone was going to introduce us, but I/he forgot) ...pictures to follow.
  19. My wife still has all her hair (no sideburns though).
  20. CANTELOUPE ROCK is a belter... It's on the GAZ'S ROCKIN' BLUES 2 CD set (Trojan TJDDD270)
  21. It was released on a Trojan single to coincide with the release of Gaz Mayall's TOP SKA TUNES
  22. Or Penny, for that matter. I'm going (I've never been to one of these before and am looking forward to it) There are a few from the Pama/Trojan/Chatty Mouth set who'll be there. I still look quite like my previous - come and say hello, Birder...
  23. My JO favourites are SOLID ROCK, THE LORD IS WITH ME and I AM WHAT I AM... ...a magnificent voice taken away way too soon...
  24. I don't know the tune - I wonder if it's as good as HONKY PANKY
  25. Isn't the Fab catalogue a real mess, in terms of release sequences and catalogue numbers... etc.?
