its a bit like religion, no amount of logic or discussing makes any difference to anyone, you either believe in it & follow it as best you can or you dont. As it happens I do believe in it ..............(ovo that is not religion).

My missus strokes my chin when a particularly rare original record is played.
  3. As far as auction records are concerned a starting point could be look at the price the 3rd highest bidder was prepared to pay. The highest bidder has now got the record and is out of the game next time one is up for sale. The second highest bidder would only have to just beat the 3rd highest bidder if it came up again..... (of course wont really work like this cos time moves on, diff people show an interest, condition etc..)

correct me if im wrong but I thought the Darrow Fletcher on kent was a first issue of previously unreleased tracks i.e does fit the ovo bill.

I reckon the 'its in the groove that counts argument" is more about 'dj's' who want to play 'big records' they dont have, than any concern for the dancers. If any dancer is that keen to hear a particular tune (however rare the originals are) then there will be someone on here who can point them to a venue/dj where the original can be heard. If you are talking about punters who are only prepared to go to the 'local' do then I suspect they wont walk out in a strop just because they weren't allowed to hear a tomangoes or sam williams boot for example. They will be just as happy with say a kim weston/helpless or any other of thousands of cheap well known records. Who knows you could even try a cheap but underplayed record on them.........

Unless you can go on ebay and buy one of these prints for say £10 then although I know nothing about collecting paintings I dont think the analogy works. The bootlegs/re-issues being talked about being played are not some special kind of product they are mostly churned out in numbers and freely available to anyone to purchase (unfortunately as seen with recent case on this).

You must have thousands of great but cheapish records in your collection - I would much rather come to a do and hear you put a set together of those than hear you play boots/re-issues of other 'big records'. So you (or anyone else) doesn't need to play boots or 'risk their valuable records' (although for me I think they are to be played).

Well I know a fair few people in the south who do care! If promoters/dj's believe people dont care then why have i never seen a flyer advertising "We play bootlegs of all the big sounds". or why i've never heard a dj stating "oh yes i always play bootlegs" etc... so to me it is about being honest to the punters - advertise it as it is. Dont complain if i give it a miss though.

I could have said those exact 4 quotes from 'Geoff'! To add I just love the way cleethorpes to me seems so casual and yet everything just works. I dont really go for the live acts but Patti Austin was amazing at blackpool. The dancefloor in the modern room at blackpool was not good for dancing, some great sets in the daytime bar, so this year Cleethorpes (always on my own), Blackpool (with missus who likes more oldies). Plan to do more european weekenders in future (going to the modsoul weekender in ibiza this year mixing it with house event). Prefer the format cos it doesn't take me any longer to get over a weekender than it does an allniter!! (more music for the same payback)
  10. Just had a look and the £92 one is a G+ and still 5 or 6 days to go ????
  11. Alfie never fails to put on a special night and this was no exception. I would say the venue really is perfect for 200-300 attendees with superb dancefloor. The big draw was Ted Massey and he certainly didn't disappoint playing some cracking tunes and all the other dj's played their part in providing a variety of quality soul with the dancefloor getting going from early on & right through. Well worth considering for 2019 which will be the 10th anniversary special! It was my absolute privilege to be asked to play - {played the following all OVO} Artist Track Label Issue 10;00pm to 10;40pm Marvin gaye Love starved heart Tamla US Demo Edward hamilton Baby don’t you weep Maryjane US Issue Harvey averne dozen Never learned to dance Uptite US Issue Angela davis & mighty chevelles My love (is so strong) Flaming arrow US Issue Jerry washington Don’t waste my time Glades US Issue Charles spurling She cried just a minute King US Issue Tommy dodson III Cooperate Main sound US Issue Tomangoes I really love you Washpan US Issue Sam williams Love slipped through my fingers Tower US Demo Cairos Stop overlooking me Shrine US Issue De lites Lover Cuppy US Issue Tempos I'll never forget Diamond jim US Demo Admirations You left me Peaches US Issue Masqueraders How Labeat US Issue Lester tipton This wont change Labeat US Issue Jimmie bo horn I cant speak Dade US Issue

obviously there is never any final conclusion to these type of discussions but it reminds us the enormous amount of talent in the soul world and the great thing is the discussion triggers me to think 'oh yes must dig that out or have a listen to that sometime soon'.

We can all think of fantastic vocal performances (say on a particular record or two) but to be a'great' they have to have done it consistently time and time again - in the same way that I have witnessed some top quality goals at Reading (not for ages unfortunately) but those players did it once or twice in their career as opposed to a messi. I'll stick with Marvin gaye & Jackie wilson as my desert island collections...

    If its down to favourite singers for their output then for me Marvin Gaye - so many styles and not one dud. Jackie wilson a close second - for so many great northern dancers. As for a couple of records where the lead singer is for me just incredible - possibly not in a classic sense but just the sheer power/emotion;
  15. Merry Xmas to all soul source team & members!
  16. Not the most valuable in money terms but would be the last 2 i ever let go..... Marvin Gaye - Little Darlin & Doggone - both Mint Uk TMG demos. (I just look at them whilst playing my US issue copies).
  17. I wouldn't argue with anyone that carries 300 records - with my back i struggle with 100 box sometimes & the missus has to carry it.
  18. Exactly mate. I never planned anything until I got on stage then it would be the 1st record that I played just to compliment the last record from the previous set ,then went with what the mood of the place took me obviously flowing from one to the next never 100 mph to mid tempo , slowly but surely up or down or whatever way the dancing dictated. Sometimes 100 mph full set, sometimes 70,s sometimes mid tempo, more often than not a cross the board set but always dance floor dictated Steve Pretty much agree, although unless you take your whole collection with you (surely impractical if not impossible for most) there must have been an element of planning.
  19. Hi Ted, just had a quick listen but prefer 'if you give up your love'............. but happy to be persuaded!
  20. Although some posters have said they use the same record (or even all three) to always open their set, which i actually find quite surprising. Unless i have misread the thread i think most posters are just giving a (recent) example of their first three (which most? actually decide on at the time).
  21. Hi Ted, any chance of 'nobody beats my love' or even better (for me) the other side 'if you give up your love' - southampton new years eve ? thks.
  22. I agree with Len & know a dj who usually(always?) finishes with marvin gaye come get to this - Great!
