Loosely Speaking, Commercial Soul
In its day I thought it was just a nice sound now because of various other versions, a thread on here and a new cover by Darrel Ball and John Scroates. I have rediscovered "I'll Be Around" Detroit Spinners Paul

Northern Cd In Daily Mail
A couple of years ago in the Sunday Star there was a CD called something like Lazy Sunday Soul. It had Frank Wilson, Sliced Tomatoes, Band Of Gold and a few others including the added extra tracks in a similar style that they thow on these discs. I bought the paper specially for it and it was crap. Paul

Heroes
Hero is the wrong word actually but he was someone who was a good laugh to be around. I knew him from around 73 and last time I saw him was 84. I think character is a far better word. Paul

Karaoke Soul
Only ever went to one Karaoke night about 10 years ago. The tracks were obviously very US based because while looking at the listings I noticed "Nobody But Me" Human Beinz and "More Today Than Yesterday" Spiral Staircase, both US hits. Fortunately I didn't get pissed enough to try, but was tempted with the Human Beinz track. Me and my mate did do "Blue Moon" with me attempting the bass bit. It sounded good to us. Paul

Who Were These Guys
I agree, it's not a particular favourite if mine, but a good dancer. And is it any worse than say, Joey Delorenzo? Paul

Worst Record Spun By Djs
I agree totally, but at my first allnighter at Va Vas just pre Wigan, Someone(probably Dickie S) was playing "Under My Thumb" by the Rolling Stones. Oh and "That's The Tune" by PJ Proby.(and I still have the Album with it on!). The problem was, you could cope with good danceable pop/"Blue eyed soul" being played amongst the majority of true uptempo soul. It was just that the plot was well and truly lost by about 76, 77.and to a certain extent from 74. Oh1 and I have always loved "The Snake" since I first heard it at a youth club in 1971. The thing is, my other favourite sound at the time was "Scratchy" Paul

REMEMBER THOSE COVER-UPS??
Just remebered "I Miss My Baby" by the Lebarron Strings all time classic, and what about "We Gotta Keep On Keepin On" by the Casino Brothers. Paul

Curtis Move On Up
I'm sure you're right Pete, I seem to remember a black Buddah release and a multi coloured "maxi single" coming out around the same time. Just another good soul chart record at the time though! Paul

Paint Your Self In A Corner
As I don't actually go out to play much anymore, I'm stunned when I hear of tracks like this that I used to like in a new release sort of way and I bought at the time. Another was the Originals "Good Lovin' Just A Dime Away". Andy Peebles used to play them all to death on Piccadilly Soul Train. "Who'd 'ave thought thirty years today we'd be sitting around drinking Chateau de chasse and calling those new releases northern! Paul

Stop Press - Vocal To Hey Sah Lo Ney Found
Reminds me of around 74/75 when Black Music Mag had a real downer on Northern and they just used to dismiss any reissues as crap. The descrition of Mr Floods Party, "Compared to What" was a dire instrumental played at Wigan. OK, the track may not be particularly soulful and was a Torch/Wheel sound, but I still think they should have listened to it before commenting on it. Paul

Real Little Britains Feat' Young Holt
I agree with you. The only thing soulful about it was that I think I last heard it in an OTIS Elevator! Paul

Micky Moonshine ?
On a similar subject, anyone know the true identity of Round Robin? singer of that gritty soulful oldie "Kick That Little Foot Sally Anne" Paul

Those Funny Northern Soul Tracks
I'm sure that I heard that it was played possibly by Mr Barnfather at a soul night in about 75 and he covered it up as "Morning Of The Monkey"! Anyone else remember? Paul

Dj's.......top 10 Double Sider's
One I'd forgetten about but was reminded on the Deepfunk radio thread is Edward Hamilton "Call Me" bw "I'm Gonna Love You". I have it on Jameco but I'm not sure of the status of this release. Is it a reissue, boot, legit release or what?. Always preferred "Call Me" to IGLY. Paul

Live Soul
Many people say that Betty Wright at Wigan was the best ever. Sorry, because it was Betty Wright at the hight of the Mecca/Wigan "wars", I went into Mr Ms until she was finished. Was she good? Saw the O'Jays and Bunny Sigler at Jacksonville colloseum in 1978 along with about 50,000 other people. I think I was the only one shouting for "Working On Your Case", "I Dig Your Act", "Girl Don't Make Me Wait" etc.....Didn't sing any of them. Good gig though. Paul

Live Soul
First allnighter for 5 years at the Top Of The World Staffs to see Gene Chandler. Expecting "Get Down", "Duke Of Earl", "Groovy Situation", crap gear and not much else. He ended up doing most of his "Northern" sounds and to cap it all a handfull of dex. Also verballed with Pete Lawson for a couple of hours. The last time I saw him. all in all, a good night. Maybe not the best live act but memorable. Paul

Those Funny Northern Soul Tracks
Yes I found a copy at a junk shop years ago I don't know what was worse, the record or me at the time thinking it may be a long lost soulful version of the Baltimore & Ohio Marching Band Paul

Those Funny Northern Soul Tracks
I always preferred their other one, "Just Like Duramine and Duraphet" Paul

Those Funny Northern Soul Tracks
I did hear that Barry Manalow It's A Miracle was played in the late 70s anyone remember. Someone gave my sister a tape years ago with some good stuff on it and a few dodgy tracks. I found a few copies of one of the tracks in a Junk shop all in mint condition and they have haunted me ever since. The track was "Toody" by Angels One Five on Pye.. Bloody Awful. I don't actually remember it being played. Does anyone else? Paul

Wigan Play......reviews & Opinions
I also saw the play on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it. This was the second time, as I went to Southampton last year. Generally, I thought that it was well written and caught a lot of the feel and attitudes of the scene and the Casino goers. There were a few thoughts I had about it all being only about Saturday and Wigan. Personally I went to a venue most nights of the week like Leyland Public Hall on Monday, Burscough FC on Tuesday, Wigan Wednesday and Friday and Aughton or St Helens on Thursday, also fitting in Places like Samanthas Blackpool Mecca Whitchurch etc at various times. I ended up Joining the Navy in 76 for a rest!. For many people in the whole scene it certainly was a way of life, not just for Saturday. Back to the play, I thought the lead character was better this year than last, and I was impressed in the way the actors got the dancing pretty much right. My sister also a Station Rd veteran came down to see it and definately thought it was worth the trip from South Wales. We both shed a tear at the end. Paul PS I never used to call my scooter a "chair"

Universally Accepted Stuff
Agree with the Seven Souls, excellent. The scoot is an LI 125. Panels, mudguard are standard, but with front dampers and a 175 kit. Paul

Universally Accepted Stuff
It proves that rarety doesn't really matter with "Please let Me In", "Don't Be Sore At Me" and "I Can't Make It Anymore" being amongst the favourites. The rarety of sounds was usefull in the old days to maintain the exclusivity of the scene and individual clubs within it. Nowadays the scene remains exclusive because it is almost like a large secret club with people either choosing to be into it or not. And there is now a huge list of good sounds discovered in the last 40 years, so there should be no reason to play substandard tracks just because they are rare.(or anything recorded after midnight on the 31 December 1969 eh Pete. ) Paul
