  1. Seem to recall on the Monitors album on Motown there's a great track which got some spins many years ago. Anybody know what it is and can they post up a sound file please or send it to me off list? Anybody got a copy of the said album for sale? cheers, derek

  4. Tell you what - whether you like him or not - Chris King probably has to be the best oldies DJ currently around now. They don't call him Mr Motivator for nothing. He sure does get the place bouncing. derek
  5. Have never had any dealings with this Bob Ellis aka The Count chappie but I have had dealings with Mr Harris in the past. Don't know if I mentioned it on here or Soul Talk but I won something like a $5 single off him and he wanted $9 (or something excessive) for P&P. When the record arrived it was sandwiched between two 78rpm records, well it would have been it they hadn't shattered into hundreds of tiny pieces inside the packaging. Luckily the record I'd bought wasn't damaged. I complained to him and got no reply. This was the last time I ever dealt with him. Prior to this I'd bought another record off him and seem to recall he wasn't accepting paypal or something so I told him I'd be sending US dollar cash within the next few days. 3 days later he contacted ebay over my non payment of the record. I wasn't amused and complained to him straight away once again I got no reply. Check his feedback if you've got a spare hour it makes for interesting reading. derek
  6. seem to think this was the figure bandied about 'cos Soul Sam alledgedly paid that for a copy a few years ago. Traded off my copy for about £150 (I think) 12-18 months ago to a young gentleman in Europe. onwards, derek
  7. hey up blake hows it going? Tight? I can peel an orange in my pocket. Besides Miranda's a high maintenance girl friend..... derek
  8. come on guiry get your playlist posted up... derek
  9. "You got to pay the price" on Silver Fox 14 entered the Billboard R&B charts on 18 October 1969 peaked at no 9 and stayed in the charts for 12 weeks. Got to no 49 in the Billboard Pop charts as well. derek
  10. Always liked "Thoussand wonders" and don't think it ever fully achieved its potential, maybe time for a bit of a revival? Played it out occassionally 5+ years ago off the Atlantic album but it was a typical quiet album press which dampened my enthusiasm some what. Never got 'round to getting a Spanish 7" either but I sorta keep threatening to. derek of course on the album which contains the above song you get the totally totally wonderful "When you left me heartaches began".
  11. Does anybody on here shop much on GEMM https://www.gemm.com/ yes I know there's absolutely loads of records and you can search by artist and label but jesus things are expensive on there. Rarely buy anything cos I'm just a voyeur. Last bargain I got on there was Joe Perkins top deepie on Nugget for $2.50 boy did I whistle all the way to the shop with that one...... derek Is it good for selling?
  12. I don't think prices have peaked yet, collectors & DJs will continue to pay the price with alot of moaning and groaning just like we do for petrol (and cigs if you're a smoker). I think what has changed is the way people spend their money - lets say for example you spend £100 on records a month when records were cheaper you might be 4 @ £25 or 2 @ £50. Nowadays because of the increased prices you might hold off buying those so-so records you quite like and wait till a real must have comes along. Those £10-15 cheapies which you used to buy blind are now £25-30 and you can't afford to be burning off money like that. Better to sit on it a while and wait to see what floats by. Plus I think buying habits have changed simply because there isnt the volume of quality vinyl out there in good nick to be bought. At venues these days how many dealers have boxes of cheaper obscure stuff but have little in the way of quality oldies. Alright apart from Butch but he can be expensive. derek I sold 2 records through Ebay last month which I thought might have gone for a bit more (I'd checked on popsike for previous auction results). Syl Johnson red Special Agent £250 and Carol & Gerri MGM dj £200 both mint and the bidders weren't falling over themselves for them. Yes I did have a high reserve on both of them maybe that frightened some people off I don't know? Think I'd missed the boat pricewise with C&G as it was more in demand last year or so.
  13. aint that such a great record if it was rare everybody would be chasing it - presume you've got it on the funky blue vinyl Silver Fox white demo which is pretty damn neat! Would be interested to know what 5 releases you've got. cheers, derek must check the Billboard Top 100 book when I get home to see if she ever hit the charts with it (be it pop or RnB) they must have had great faith in the song to release it several times.
  14. You two can be so cruel you know how sensitive I can be.....as soon as Ian O'Benga gives me a copy of the radio show on CD I'll send a copy onto Mister Hughes for possible streaming on here. Here's what I played - Claude Huey "Drifting" MIOB; Superlatives "Don't let true love die" Westbound; Creations "Just remember me" Globe; Sylvia Thomas "At last" Bamboo; New Yorkers "Don't wanna be your fool" Tac Ful; Soul Notes "Don't make me beg" Way Out; Precisions "What I want" Drew; Notations "New day" Twinight; Buddy Connor "When you're alone" Breakthrough. I'm sure Mister Howard will add on his plays as well. Once again it was good fun on ALL fm 96.9 DP late? surely you jest - I over estimate how quick I work and under estimate how long things will take. Together thats a dangerous situation. No wonder I'm forever plate spinning hehehe. onwards, derek

  16. wasn't it on a studio acetate or something (an unissued album?) seem to think Irish Greg had the only copy a few years ago before he sold up. cheers, derek
  17. Anybody fancy this - Syl Johnson "Now I know what love is" Special Agent (red) Ex £275; plus I might sell Carol & Gerri MGM DJ in Ex nick if I get a decent offer. Think its in the £200-250 bracket isnt it? Ooops havent got the guides to hand. Off list please. P&P extra. cheers, derek might consider decent trades...

I'll be playing 45rpm records off chunky black vinyl sorry not got any LPs with me this time. Loads of friends and venues will be getting a mention as usual. Lets go get 'em, derek
  19. Must confess I loved looking at the photos of the old buildings in Detroit which housed labels and studios throughout the sixties and seventies. Found them on the Soulful Detroit website (sorry aint got address to hand). Anyway whilst researching some old Chicago labels I stumbled across this mod site in Chicago https://www.modchicago.com - under their archive section you'll find 'Record Row: Soul in Chicago 1200-2600 S Michigan Ave, Chicago'. A fascinating read which has some good photos of how the buildings look today. derek
  20. Anybody want this 45 in Ex condition? The Squires "Don't accuse me" Gee 1082 WDJ copy £100 P&P extra. UK chq OK. Off list replies. thanks, derek
  21. great great record so good I had to say it twice. Seen a few other things by them on this label but they weren't to my taste. Can't recall last time I saw/heard of "Just an illusion" for sale. derek
  22. oooh you can be very hurtful Mister Gareth (laughs). Listened to this on Manships site after seeing an orig studio acetate in Tim Ash's sales box at Keele last week. Er Mmmm? Here's what it says on JM's auction and bear in mind he is trying to sell it Al McCarther - His True Love For You - Two Guitars A truly gasp-inducing 45. You'll have to click this sound bite more than once. In one week Al McCarther has become my favourite record! It's appeared on Island & Popcorn wants list for an age. I know of no Northern Soul DJs or collectors who own a copy, that's why it's not blown this scene apart long before now. A truly different and awesome potential MONSTER and so incredibly RARE! hands up if you like collecting vinyl, derek
  23. After the recent verbal tussles over whether Ivy Jo's "Feel the pain" could/should be played blah blah blah I started to think of records which have had plays in the past but seldom get aired nowadays. I'm not talking seventies dancers here which have had their time and would sound so ridiculously dated in 2005. I'm talking straight forward northern tunes like: International GTOs "I love my baby" (Rojac); Bessie Banks "I cant make it anymore" (Verve); The Ambers "I love you baby" (Verve). When did you last hear (or play if you're a DJ) any of the above out in a club? Has their time passed and they just don't sound right for today? You tell me. derek Confession: I've got all 3 records and havent played them out in years, have carried them in the box and always meant to play them but never did. You see I'm just as bad as everyone else hehehe
  24. reminded Tim Ash of this incident last night at Keele. Just shows what sort of brain/memory I have when I can recall details like this but forget my mums birthday. And yeah the record aint that good, sold it because I realised I was only foolishly keeping it because thats what a collector should do. Mmmm? derek
  25. Ivy Jo "I can feel the pain" VIP 25063 released 1970 Is this one of those records that is good but just not good enough for mass acceptance? He's got a decent voice riding on a thundering rhythm, good song as well. It ticks the rarity box as its a steady £100 sound and quite tricky to locate. I've played it a few times over the years - lets just say the reaction was between cool and cold. However good old Paul Johnson from Bolton played it in his set at Lowton recently to a decent response. What does the forum think - could it go if more DJs got behind it or is it just anothers decent collectors sound? always curious, derek Isnt there suppoused to be an album of his sitting in the motown vaults? Don't believe what it says on the label.
