  1. Hi Kirsty, Please pm me your details, unfortunately we won't be able to get to the venue but we know how important raising money for the cancer charities as we run an annual event and in the four years we have been running it we have relied on the rare soul family to raise alot of well needed funds, to do a charity night in memory of Gillian makes it even more emotional and important, so we will be pleased to donate either prizes or money and we really hope it's a great night although sad and in the process successful. Regards Alan & Judi
  2. I can recommend King Northern Soul on Kent, I reckon that will fall in line with your tastes, also what about Doris Duke "I'm a loser" the Swammp Dogg sessions excellent Southern Soul again on Kent. What about Goldmine's Northern Soul Southern Style, some brilliant stuff on there and finally there's a great cd callled Shreveport Southern Soul The Murco Story. Bookwise there a loads of great books available, one's which may be of interest to you are Sweet Soul Music, Rhythm and blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom written by Peter Guralnick who has written other good books related to our music. Hope this helps, get your list sent to Father Christmas before it's too late. Regards Alan
  3. hi there, what genre do you favour , 6t's, 7t's, Motown, funk, crossover etc etc, it will give us chance of recommending the right stuff. Regards Alan

Fantastic album, the great Mike Terry production. I remember the second time she was appearing live at Cleethorpes Weekender, I think Dean Parrish was on with her, after they both finished their performances we had a chance to meet them on a one to one basis, anyway I went in the room clutching my copy of "Out of Sight" and Maxine asked me if she could look at the album as she hadn't seen it for many a year, after a short while she asked me what my favourite track was off the LP to which I replied "Seems you've forsaken my love" to which she said 'Oh yes I remember that' and she proceeded to sing the track to me, absolutely word perfect, it was beautiful and a moment I will never forget. Regards Alan

  6. Totally agree with De-to here, a tune that always reminds me of my early years on the scene, spent a hard earned £3 on my original, happy days !!!!!!!!!!! Regards Alan

  9. Hi Mike, you're right I was trying to do it via attachments, I will give refosoul a try. Thanks for your help. Regards Alan
  10. Many songs have this effect on me but 2 that come to mind are:- The Supremes - Remove this doubt. Second one isn't a piece of vinyl but a video on youtube of the great Levi Stubbs in a wheelchair singing with Aretha Franklin and the rest of the 4 Tops, it is absolutley heart wrenching, probably made more emotional by Levi's condition, the trouble is I can't find it anymore, does anyone have a link to it or has it been taken off ???. Regards Alan
  11. Thanks Ken for the offer of converting it but I can't be sending you all the files I need converting but thanks for the offer, now I know what to do I'm sure I have some software somewhere which does the conversion. Regards Alan

  14. Thanks alot, that was quick, was it LP track only and if so is the Lp fairly easy to find. Regards Alan
  15. Hi all, does anyone know what the record is that used for the new Boots advert, I think it may be called "Here come the girls". Thanks in advance. Regards Alan
  16. I must admit that Z Z Hill's version of "That ain't the way you make love" was always one of my faves and when I heard that Reggie Garner had cut a version of it I couldn't wait to hear it to be able to compare and I was really pleasantly surprised as to how good it was, I was able to get a copy of it for £30 before it became more popular, unfortunately the copy I've got is the demo and apparently I'm missing out on an equally good record called "half a cup" which is the released 'b' side, anyone got a sound file of "half a cup" as I haven't heard it yet. Conclusion I still think Z Z Hill has the edge. Regards Alan
  17. Totally agree with you here Dave, McKinley Jackson's production has such an identity that you can more or less categorically state that on first listen that it is one of his productions, some that come to mind are Reggie Garner's ABC stuff, The Originals "Californian Sunset", Richard 'Popcorn' Wylie's ESP on ABC, one that I can't remember for certain and I can't put my hands on my copy to check but isn't the awesome Freda Payne "Payne & Pleasure" set on ABC the work of McKinley Jackson & Lamont Dozier, and finally one which I have never owned and indeed never seen but I have heard at venues is Bobby Hutton's incredible "Wanting you needing you" again I don't know if Lamont Dozier and McKinley Jackson were involved in the writing and producing but it certainly sounds as though they were, perhaps you knowledgable guys can confirm them last two tracks. Not forgettin' Lamont Dozier's production of the brilliant Zingara LP on Big Wheel which the brilliant "I surrender" came from. Agree with Eddie that "Why can't we be lovers" is possibly my favourite soul record of all time, it's certainly fighting it out in my top 5 with The Originals "Baby I'm for real", Sam Dees "Child of the streets", Donny Hathaway "I love the lord he heard my cry" and The Isley Brothers "Who could ever doubt my love", it would be difficult for to put them in any kind of order. Regards Alan
  18. Hi Ray nice to hear from you, hows things ok I hope and hows the rest of the Kirby crew, nice Lamont choices mate, the guy oozes class doesn't he. Regards Alan
  19. I love Lamont Doziers music it's hard to pick one standout track but it would come from the following:- Why can't we be lovers. Rose. Trying To Hold On To My Woman. Take Off Your Make Up. Let me start tonight. Regards Alan
  20. I have the greeny blue Tarpon release of Love Reputation and they are the Demo copies and the blue Tarpon releases are the issues. Regards Alan
  21. If Carlsberg made LP's ............................. Up there with "Extensions of a man" by Donny Hathaway, "On the road again" by D.J.Rogers, "War of the gods" by Billy Paul "American Gipsy" by American Gipsy and "Californian Sunset" by The Originals. I bought Sam Dees "The show must go on" as a new release and I think I must be due a new copy as my original is worn out. Regards Alan
  22. Hi Mal, I was reading all the previous posts to yours about fighting on the soul scene and my wife Judi and I agreed that the only bit of trouble we ever saw was one night at The Old Vic in about 1988 when some of locals had a bit of a do over a young lady and I was talking to Dave Evison who was DJ'ing at the time and an empty pint glass came flying towards us and we ducked and it smashed on the wall behind us, but what a concidence that your post was the next one we read. The Old Vic was a great venue with Pep at the helm, had some great nights there, we attended nearly everyone and we used to travel from Stockport, that's how much we enjoyed it. Regards Alan
  23. Where's Eddie Hubbard, we can't have a CD swap without him, come on Eddie get your name down mate. Regards Alan
  24. Awesome set Mark especially The Four Sonics, The Entertainers and The Intentions which I totally forgot about when I met the Harthon guys in Florida just a few weeks ago, this type of set I'd love to hear in a venue, it's also the selection of music that would have me looking forward to the next time the venue was on but sadly it's never going to be is it as there is too much pressure from the dance floor for classics etc which I don't have a problem with and although alot of these are classics in their own right they would almost certainly get the thumbs down if played along side each other which is a pity. Hopefully see you next week. Regards Alan
  25. Hi Chris, have emailed you my details. Regards Alan
