  1. Here's one I picked up after browsing one of Tim Brown's Rare Soul Reviews. One of the cheaper items in the mag that was subject to scrutiny and an Homer Banks composition too boot. Funnily enough I read the day after originally posting that it's got a recent CD release on :The Other Side Of The Trax - Stax Volt 45 rpm Rarities 1964-1968 - reviewed eleswhere on Soul-source. Sounds very much like Otis should have given it a go too:Johnnie Taylor - "Strange Things (happening to my heart)"
  2. Talkin about classic oldies, here's a tune that is greatly neglected on account of the fact that most folks go for 't other side. Sounding very "Parliament" - ary , written and produced by William McKinley Hutchison for the group he was instrumental in forming as The Versatiles, until label boss, Johnny Rivers, changed their name to 5th. Dimension - I’ll Be Lovin’ You Forever UK Liberty: LBF 15356 :
  3. Again funny, but nothing misleading, but surely Jackie Edwards is not worth over £400 with writing on label? Surely there must have been a few thousand pressed? https://www.ebay.com/itm/291674435273?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
  4. Too late with that suggestion Mart, the wife got it in first.:-)
  5. Talking of Bobby, his version of this being the first record we danced together to at The Golden Torch, I recently came across this calypso version from 1963, UK only I think (perhaps as well). I've posted for the novelty value. Jimmy Lloyd "Call on Me"
  6. I very rarely post anything I havn't got myself but as this is on the want's list and I would guess not that well known, I thought it worth a post. Laura Lee "Are You Doing Me Wrong " This was un-issued from a 1983 Japanese Chess best of LP :
  7. "Good - plays with a skip" https://www.ebay.com/itm/281921449305?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
  8. The Third Guitar , have a number of prized funk soul release on Rojac. Including this, sounding more Chicago than the Windy City: The Third Guitar Sad Girl Rojac 120
  9. Undoubted Curtis influence, new to me - nice!
  10. I doubt if Gerry "Goeffin" got his Royalties on this one? Very nice version though!
  11. I doubt if Gerry Goeffin got his royalties on this release. Nice!
  12. Excellent.new to me - better than the Chi-ites I would say.
  13. Thought I'd opt for an oldie that I've heard is on a bit of a revival: Barbara & Brenda Never Love a Robin UK Direction. I'm also posting two alternative versions by the composer Charlie and Inez Foxx and Tommy Hunt. I'm wondering whether there's also a Platters version in the can somehwere?

  17. Thought this might be interesting to some, given his many contributions to Soul Music, particularly in the 60's and 70's. Whilst listening to Sound's of the 60's on Radio 2 last Saturday, Alan Freeman played a tune that I wasn't familiar with Travellin Man by Ricky Nelson. Because of the production and delivery on the record, it immediately struck me as a Sam Cooke record. However further research led me to discover that it was in fact composed by Jerry Fuller , who offered it to Sam, who subsequently turned it down. Consequently it was released as a double A side to "Hey Mary Lou" which sold millions. I for one had never seen Jerry Fuller whose production and song writing credits light up many a Northern tune, here he talks about the song and production (my apologies to anyone who knows of the story) :
  18. Just added. Not Cellarfull of Soul, but Dave Evison's Signal Radio Show from the late 1990,s . Unfortunately I didn't write the date down on the C90 at the time that I recorded it so if anyone has the actual date I'd appreciate it. Worth a listen because he interviewed a number of "late" artists that we took for granted for so long including the Major, Barbara Acklin and Edwin Starr. Other guests include Frank Elson, Pep, Colin Curtis, Chris Burton and Johnny Beggs. Click on the link to Listen: The Golden Torch story by Dave Evison and Co with Major Lance, Barbara Acklin and Edwin Starr. Note: This is actually part 2, for part 1 click HERE
