  1. Polo was on the coach with me - it was his first allnighter. PP Arnold was a biggie that night! As for the others on the coach; the usual Worcester pillheads! lol. But will try and find the original pic, scan it and load it up - you might recall the names better than me Steve.
  2. Very true - a youth club classic. Thanks for posting all the British stuff Pete. Regarding the Paradox thing on Polydor, for what it's worth, I thought I "discovered" that one in 1973. An old mate of mine, Pete Green, aka Peter Lee Stirling was involved in it (writer?) Anyway, played it to Russ W, early days at Wigan and he wanted an emidisc, but I never heard him play it. I guess there was too much quality around at that time. I mean, Morris Chestnut or Paradox? No choice really. Just dug out the Invitations thing on JayBoy. It's not aged well. You really want to like it, but it's hard! Anybody want to buy a mint demo? Col
  3. Rob Dave Greet - now there's a name from the past. Ringing monster sized bells but I can't recall where I knew him from. I know he deejayed, but was Dave a Midlander? Colin
  4. You're right. It's not a bad track either. I'm almost certain there's a typo error on the label. On my copy they actually sing "packing up", but the label credits say "picking up" Were they being booked out as The Drifters on that tour? That reminds me of another typo. Tami Lynn's I'm gonna run away from you. She actually sings WHY don't I run away from you. Record pressing plant cock up on first press and they just stuck with it.
  5. I was 16, on a coach from Worcester to Va Va. Landslide, Hide nor hair and The Vel vets were the big sounds. Was Woody the good looking one?!
  6. How about Stevie's What Christmas Means To Me? Bouncy, happy, skippy and on the soulful side of pop. Col
  7. Couldn't do without my daily SS fix! Many, many thanks Colin
  8. And what a bloody good tune it is too!
  9. How could I forget Dusty!? So much better than the Susan Barrett one.
  10. Just sent you ten bucks Atom - it would be more but my divorce has put a major squeeze on my wallet. Good luck - thanks to your selfless dedication, your site is possibly the most useful NS resource on the net. Colin
  11. I'm still a relative newbie here, so please forgive me if this ones been asked before; I guess it'll disappear quickly if the topic is a chestnut. Here's the question; what's your absolute favourite home grown Northern Soul record? I'm looking for YOUR one or two faves, rather than endless lists of songs we all know are British productions. I've a big soft spot for Stella Starr's version of Bring Him Back, partly because of the massive drum sound and mostly coz I once had a shiny mint UK demo. Frankie and Johnny's I'll Hold You sounds for all the world like a US production, but my fave has got to be Band Of Angels - Invitation. Simple song, simply done, great vocals from Mike D'Abo, perhaps not soulful enough for most tastes? What do you think? If it's not a contradiction in terms; Best ever British produced Northern Soul record? PS First person to suggest Nosmo King/Javells gets a free black and decker nose hair trimmer!
  12. Been bugging me for ages this one... When the heck did it first get played out? Sound like it ought to have been a Wheel sound but something tells me it was mid Wigan? Please help!
  13. The Ric Tic stuff had some balls didn't it? Thinking of Double O Soul in particular. Brunswick always well recorded, but wish the bass was more thumping...
  14. Was just reading the "made in the box room" thread and it sparked an idea for this thread. Which Northern Soul records do you consider to be the best recordings in terms of overall sound quality? Which records have got the deepest, cleanest bass? The punchiest snare? The zingiest strings or the loudest horns? Any labels that consistently put out well engineered stuff? Maybe we should limit suggestions to the '60's, before the technology leapt. If "Time's a wasting" is one of the worst (dull, muddy, no bass) , which are the best for you? I'll kick you off with one off the top of my head that always make the speakers shake, though I guess it's late sixties pedigree explains it: Don Varner - Tear Stained Face
  15. Agree - there's defeinitely something garage like about that one. On the subject of poor recordings, always thought it was a shame that the Fuller Brothers classic didn't have much more punch. Poorly mastered perhaps? Hmmmm..... idea for a thread. I'm off!!!!!
  16. Just noticed your Globetrotters avatar Paul. I'd forgotten all about them. Got an RCA single somewhere of "Cheer Me Up". Seem to remember it was half decent. Anyone else recall that?
  17. Duh.... Just my weak attempt at humour, Paul. I don't ever remember hearing it out. And yes you're right, it's on Direction in the UK and you've got it on the B side of "Come on in". Great little skippy, happy tune.
  18. Dumb question repeated; so how does he get them/find them?
  19. Inez and Charlie Foxx - Baby Drop A Time....?
  20. Ta for the clip Pete - sounds like a typical Torch sound to me, and from my perspective, that's always a good thing. This might be a daft question, but, from everything I've heard, Butch seems to be the leading NS DJ in the country; so...... how come? I mean, how does he get so many exclusives that no-one else can get their hands on? Is Butch a big money spender or just a great crate digger/soul detective?
  21. "Do it" - an amazing slab of proto/Northern funk. Fab rif
  22. Me too - what a trip that would have been. "Hey Eddie.. a little more passion please fella..... Love you baby, take 5...."
  23. The bottom line (for me) is this: IT WAS GREAT TO DANCE TO!
  24. I wonder if the team responsible read the Soul Source Forum! A few months back I suggested that it would make a great song for Joss Stone to cover (gives self pat on back!) Good on 'em - it's a super version.
  25. Just heard that remix of Ann Sexton, You been gone too long. Sounds great to me - really well done. Would post a soundfile if I had one. Funny thing, but I always thought this song was a great candidate for a re-make. What's the story? Anyone know who was behind the remix? Best Colin
