Festival Time vocal
Sounds very authentic to me. If it's a newer recording, then it would be an incredible pastiche. Whatever, Paul r, it ain't a quite a patch on Alice Clark is it!?

Festival Time vocal
Thanks for the link Craig W. That's the groove I was talking about. Sounds to me like the vocal was added some time later. To my ears it's a very fair job, and I could be wrong, but I think the giveaway is in the reverb. Motown vocals in the 60's tended to be mixed much more "dry"; they saved the reverb for the track. In that way the vocals "punched through" a lot better. Festival time was Ric Tic, I know; but I think the same applies.

Festival Time vocal
And while we're on the subject; another chestnut. Was the "vocal" to 6 by 6 a myth? Did anything ever turn up?

Festival Time vocal
It was definitely not the Laura Lee version - did anyone else think that was poor? The vocal I'mtalking about was definitely male.

Festival Time vocal
Anyone who reads my posts might have guessed that I've been off the scene for eons, so please don't beat me up too much for asking dumb questions. Here goes: the other day I heard a vocal to Festival Time by the Detroit Sound (I think). Has this been around for a long time? What's the story? Festival Time, to my ears, was written and arranged as an instrumental; where did these vocals come from? Is it a contemporary recording, or has someone "creatively" added the vocals a few years down the road? Sorry if it's chestnut; thanks in advance. Colin

The Holy Grail Of Northern Soul
A pleasant record, but so over-rated, imho

The Montclairs
John You may know what you like, and I respect that; but you don't know too much about music. No offence.

The Montclairs
Crikey! And I thought I had strong views on 60's vs 70's! It's laughable to slate DJ's like Levine and Curtis as lazy. What about Jodi Mathis? I expect that's disco shite too?

The Montclairs
Ok. What about Lou Pride's "Coming home in the morning" Is that Disco Shite?

The Montclairs
I'd love to know the date of your cut-off point. Is it New Year's eve 1969? Just my opinion, but Disco to me always implies records that were made for the dance market. It's characterized by a four-on-the-floor beat and splashy high hats. Gloria Gaynor's Never Can Say Goodbye was the first time I heard that vibe. I just don't see how The Carstairs fits in that bag.

The Montclairs
John I wasn't sure if your tongue was in your cheek when you wrote that; and I can't believe that no-one has leapt to defend The Carstairs (surely one of Northern Soul's best loved records). As someone who was there the first week or two it was played at Blackpool Mecca, I can recall even now how instantly and enthusiastically it was embraced by both sides of the scene. Nobody loves the 60's stuff more than me, but to call The Carstairs disco-shite? You're 'avin' a laff!

Going rate for B & S mags?
I was curious: is there a market for old Blues & Soul mags? I have loads from 1970 to 1977, plus some Black Music and Hot Buttered Soul; I'm wondering if it's time to clear them out. If there is a market, what do they go for? If it's pennies then I'll hang on - after all, I've kept 'em this long.

The Montclairs
To my ears, The Montclairs classic is a million miles from Disco. The beat is far more clever; the vocals more soulful; the lyrics more classy. As I recall it, "Hung up" was never spoken in the same breath as other so-called modern records (Snoopy Dean, Johnny C etc). It was embraced with great enthusiasm - just like The Carstairs. In other words: an instant groove.

Paul Weller
With regard to Weller's spin on "The Bottle"; I can't agree that it's shite. I wouldn't play it for pleasure, but it's an interesting arrangement. No offence meant, but I've never understood the attitude that implies "our music" is sacred, and that cover versions are the devil's work.

Baby Thats a Groove... with mushy peas
Ok, please can anyone tell me what the real lyrics are to the first verse of Baby thats a Groove? It's puzzled me for over 30 years!
