Guy Hennigans Stafford Biggies,1987
I was lucky enough to be custodian of Guy's collection when he went to the States in the early 80s. He was based in Derby at the time and didn't want to leave them unattended in the flat. So I took them to my parent's place which was like Fort Knox. My reward was that I could tape them all on the agreement I would not make further copies. The result 16 C90s which I'v still got in a pastic brief case with track listings .........which I made using the cover up titles where applicable not the originals ......doh!!!!!!!!! Must get round to converting them to CD - although a lot of the titles are now household names. And no I won't be copying them ..........the agreement still stands.

Swingin Medallions
Just been on JMs site and seen the write up on 'She Drives me out of my mind' and 'Double shot' both of which are rated 'rarest of the UK Philips releases'. Not wishing to question his knowledge and standing but out of interest what do the rest of you rate as rarest UK Philips. As both have graced the shelves in record room since the Co-op in Derby got rid of it's stock mid 70s what value do you good folks reckon ? With regard UK Philips rarities I've only ever seen one Frankie & the Classicals

Soul Scene Villains
I should add the "allegedly" disclaimer being solely for legal reasons rather than suggesting submissions might be exaggerated. God help us if Shelly gets started on this thread following the Who Shot Who at Troggs. His memory for dodgy escapades is frightening. If he writes a book then if there's a hell below we're all gonna go !

Soul Scene Villains
Steve (and Russ) totally agree with your sentiments and can relate to some of the experiences referred to. You're right - most of the literature ignores the 'dark side ' that along with the music made the scene so exciting and appealing. Andy Wilson's academic work is probably the closest literary reflection of what was going on ( and why ) but of course it only scratches the surface as every town and village had it's very naughty boys ( and girls) !!! I suggest that most if not all submissions would also have to carry an ALLEGEDLY disclaimer.

Maybe I'm being a bit thick but still not clear about the line up - I've trawled the Barbican web-site to no avail and have resorted to emailing the box office in hope of clarification. Accepting no substitutes ! Graham

Parkway - Marketed By Mgm
- The Alan Bown Set - I Really Care - Pye
Thanks for bringing this one to our attention - as has been said so many times flip 'em over (records that is !!) and you'll be suprised what you find. Just dropped it on the turntable and I'm impressed - it has a touch of the Small Faces about it but that's no bad thing. Graham- Parkway - Marketed By Mgm
About a year ago I picked up a copy of 'Follow your heart' on a plain brown/bronze coloured label with Parkway written in black across the top # KP-6001.with (103.561) underneath. It states on the label 'Manufactured by Cameo-Parkway Records. Marketed by M-G-M Records a Division of Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer Inc - Made in U.S.A' I have described it on a number of occasions to fellow collectors and no one has as yet been able to suggest the background to the comercial arrangement /origins behind the release. I wasn't aware of any link between the two companies, has anybody out there come across anything similar ? Was this cracking tune booted ?- Record Shops In York
Thanks Si This got me wondering about the feasibility of some sort of directory of shops up and down the country or even a comprehensive list of record 'dealers' (large & small) Has anyone ever tried to compile one ? Obviously this would be dependant on a number of issues including maintaining such a list and more importantly whether folks would want to disclose the numerous sources where they've managed to pick up high ticket items for pennies !! Graham- Record Shops In York
Taking the wife out for the day on Monday - might need some therapy at some stage so .......are there any record shops in the middle of York that I can accidentally come across ?- Soul Runners Grits 'n Corn Bread On Mo Soul Records
If I remember rightly they are both also on the old Polydor "Soul Party" compilation album from the late 60s.- The Finest All Nighter Venue Ever
First of many nighter experiences for me. Being a Derby lad it was nice and handy after Clouds. Remember Jimmy Ruffin live, and the bouncers scraping some guys hands against the wall until they bled for allegedly dealing ! Rough justice or what ? Spent most of the night talking to Leslie from Huddersfield (who I was re-introduced to at the Wheel last year) and got a lift back into Derby in the back of a mini-van driven I think by some guy called Alan (?). As an introduction a real eye-opener, and a rite of passage from Youth Club to Soul club night to nighters. Still hooked 40 years on !- Wants

Jez- further to your earlier interest attached is a response from Dean Parrish received on Saturday which he has given me permission to post. Dear Graham Thank you for your email I would love for O.B. to hold is record in his hand and my prayers are with him from what I understand at this time the vinyl or a cd format should be out soon I know that Russ Winstanley was working hard and was struggling without a computer for a couple of weeks and just got the best vinyl price plus VAT.been held up by prices.and working radio show /dj gig's /and home life,etc..if I get any more information I will let you know asap sincerely Dean In a further email today he says Russ will get two acetates cut for OB and his Mum. So.............. ' Keep Love Alive' is hopefully soon to become a reality. No pressure then Russ no ............ its over to you to deliver.- John (Ob) O'brian / Dean Parrish Collaboration
Does anybody know the answer as to why this recording has not still not seen the light of day ? Many of you in the Stoke and North West area will be aware of a project started earlier this year. OB, who in his own words describes himself as a simple lad from Tunstall, submitted a poem to the legend that is Dean Parrish who generously took it into the studio and helped arrange and produce an incredible recording. Why ? To create a record that would generate funds for various charities including the Douglas McMillan Hospice in Stoke and the Christie Hospital Manchester. Needless to say these are causes very close to OB and his family right now. My understanding is that despite contracts having been exchanged long since, and demos having been played on the radio during the summer attracting fantastic responses it is now unlikely extremely OB will see the fruits of his labour. Why ? Again my understanding is that the 'self appointed agent' for Dean Parrish in this country has failed to progress this project and get the necesary copies cut and sold. This is not a commercial enterprise, it's for charity and the wish of a very ill soul brother to leave a legacy for the benefit of others and a proof to his family that he could make good. This is an absolute travesty - the words in the poem/song whilst very personal to OB are sentiments I'm sure many of us have shared, and the arrangement is haunting - a real hairs on the back of the neck job ! All OB wants is to leave a legacy that will benefit others - so when will it happen ? Despite the best endeavours of OB's closest friends (Fran Gierak , Pete Roberts etc ) will the one person in the North West who was very eager to play the record on his radio all those weeks ago kindly get it sorted.- When Did Weekenders Commence,
On a similar theme........did these ever happen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blues & Soul #137 18 June 1974 page 13 advertises ISC Weekender in Majorca. with the obligatory all-dayer and all-nighter with all the No. 1 Soul Spinners ISC Weekend! Week end Saturday 23 November - Tuesday 26 November 1974 and only £45. Will try and get the kids to scan it later. And one for the anoraks and trainspotters amongst you .................in Frank Elson's column B&S 123 Nov 23 1973. (Not April 1st) page 26 column 2. Tony Petheridge of Whitchurch fame and Ken Smith formerly of Up the Junction allegedly organising the country's first all-nighter train for around the end of Jan 1974. Now this could have been a superb wind - up taking advantage of the journalist in question but here it is in black and white. Seem to remember rail strikes around then. I know Shelly ( Dave Sheldon) and I had one of the most interesting journeys to the Casino but that's another story. Hope this doesn't start one of those ' What would be on the train playlist' threads. scan mag 2.bmp article.bmp - The Alan Bown Set - I Really Care - Pye
