Rca Custom Press - Grapevine Label
HI ALL......I have had a rethink about this subject, and it is clear that there are more than 5 as stated, and like the First Choice "this is the house" PYE INT, there is no reason that the unreleased stuff from the catalogue, was not promoted at the time? I do also think that they are worth more than the old EMO DISC as I stated, this change of mind is due to the fact that they are all 100% proper, and the fact that they are on RCA CUSTOM PRESS, am I right in saying that there are a couple of EDDIE HOLMAN sides on RCA CUSTOM also BETTY BOO? of course we could ask the Scotchman John Anderson or indeed Richard, as well as Pete but he was quick to dismiss them, why I don't no as he wrote a excellent review of the label? Toady boy any thing you say is relevant to me, even if it's an elephant to you mate And finaly perhaps my favourate DISCO RECORD OH! YEH DAVE DOUBLE DEX THE MEMPHIS HORNS CLASSIC?

Rca Custom Press - Grapevine Label
HI PETE I totally agree, some people would say they are as good as the EMI DISCS of the 72-74 period, However as you are aware these do have a provenance that attaches them to Wigan, and I am sure that if the unreleased Grapevines come up on RCA CUSTOM, the completest would have to have them, don't you think? in fact these should belong in a collection, I have most Grapevines never got round to finishjng the run? only 8 short got all but to of the rarest DAVE

Rca Custom Press - Grapevine Label
HI ALL...I WAS LOOKING AT RANKONG JOHNNY BOYS AUCTION WHEN......... On Johns auction, he has an acetate by Al Williams, in the blurb that follows he Say's that it is a rare opportunity and this us the 1st time he has listed a pre release, very true, however as I have 2 other titles on RCA CUSTOM, i was wondering what the value will be, what John fails to mention, is the very small numbers of grapevine acetates there are, I was told only 5 out of 43+ had custom release, with the ALL WILLIAMS on JM AUCTION & my 2, what are the others, also I was informed, that Richard only handed these records to the very few selected top DJ? my 2 were Richards own copies, that were played at the CASINO. I have a strong feeling on my water that the Al Williams is also Richards, but I could be wrong. Does any other titles apart from the 3, in the hands of SOULSOURCE MEMBERS, If so can they let me no what they are, To my way of thinking these are not just acetates, but also very rare memorabilia DAVE K

Best Collection Ever? In Your Opinion
HI ALL....This is one of the hardest questions, that has been put forward in the few years that I have been on SOULSOURCE,......Why? well over the many years I have been collecting SOUL, there has always been the person who has the records that I have wanted and even lusted over, but the reality would mean that even if I had the money, records like the Billy Harner instrumental would not be available for many years to come, However in saying that I have been very fortunate to have known the people who do own the top records, and have helped many to build decent collections of rare soul, In the early days the meeting of John Wilkinson (Notts) 70 71 John was a WHEELITE and collector for 6 months his influence on me has lasted to this day, although I was a keen collector of soul, buying my records at CONTEMPOS in Hannaway St W1, It was John who made me appreciate the pleasure of finding & paying 6d for Chubby Checkers "at the Discotheque" like finding GOLD, As I started to get the rare soul collecting bug, the situation in England was this, most records were hard to find, so the Junk shop was the hub of the collecting scene, as most junk shops got there stuff from house clearances, the second source for me was the discovery of a warehouse that was stuffed full of records 45s & LPs, and in with the 1000s of records, were the first imports that I come across, within a few weeks I had a decent MOTOWN collection, with artists like Earl Van Dyke, Bobby Taylor, Spinners, Debbie Dean, Vows, Ones & so on, In 1972, the Record Collecting Bug had become infectious, and as such, it was this year that started my serendipitous travels into collecting RARE SOUL as an obsessive, meeting many like minded individuals. The best collectors are to many to name but, I will name a few, Hammy & Tony Warret, Andy Spencer and more who I generalise when I call them Bedford Boys as Andy not from Bedford, Top Collectors that I never competed against as their collections and knowledge was staggering, Ian Levine bought anything and everything that he did not no, and without doubt the #1 collector in 73, John Manship, had a box of R&W Motown in a box at the top of his base along with every thing else, Ady Crosdale top collector and SAGE, His Motown collection hit me so hard, that I sold my collection to a Cambridge dealer, as ADY had every thing, and I mean everything, However it is my Mentor Mick Smith, who had the best collection of them all, his UK SOUL COLLECTION is the #1 in the world. His knowledge of the UK soul Scene is so Deep, as he is a true pioneer of the scene, and has discovered many top tunes, and his US COLLECTION is also one of the best, he is know as Mr British so with out question it is MICK SMITHS Collection, that I would say is the best, & Ady C #2 with Butch #3 I should have had a far better collection than I have but wasted my time taking chemicals??? What Uk Labels Are Considered Ovo
HI ALL "MUSIC IS MUSIC TO GRING PEOPLE TOGETHER. We call it SOUL MUSIC so all of the goodness brings us together, that is all the rare soul scene, has always stood for TOGETHERNESS,& UNITY, We dislike words that end in IST or ISAM, as they are always preached by the obsessive in our society, the RARE SOUL SCENE DOES HAVE A FEW ISAMS that are except able such as headisam but I would prefer hedonistic, The roots of the SOUL SCENE are not about collecting old records, as back in the late 6fs records that got a UK RELEASE were often 1 -5 years old when issued, outlets for American soul music or Jamaican SKA, ROCK STEADY (BLUEBEAT) Was at the time very hard to get and those who did acquire the records found them in the most undesirable locations, in fact the white kids that owned Black Music records in the Mid 6ts were undesirable, typically suited and booted, sharp as a Barrow Boy with a tongue to match, these people are the real hard core working class MODS, now from 65 and onwards all of the records that were played in SOHO & the Northern All Night clubs, well 96% of it come from specialist shops the rest was bought in to the country by people in the merchant or air stewardesses, As such it was all obscure and current at it;s worst it was 3 years old, this is true about the Twisted Wheel one look at the Wheels top tunes in 1867 most were current US releases and some were only 2 years old, So all those who went to clubs north & South listened to the current soul of the day, in 68 as SOUL MUSIC changed Stateside, the music we listened to in the UK CHANGED? Jamaican Music changed into REGGAE, US SOUL turned into a more political foundation with more meaning, away went the love songs and in come the soul with a message, this crossover modern soul meant little to many British kids AREATHAS RESPECT & JAMES BROWN "SAY IT LOUD, I;M BLACK AND I AM PROUD" Meant nothing to most kids who got a laugh from "on the buses£ and "til death do us part" but forget what you have read, as both north & south still liked to Dance the night away especially when perking? as time goes buy we reach 1972 the latest SOUL SOUNDS WERE STILL BEING PLAYED YP NORTH & DOWN SOUTH, But the underground scene was split by uptempo soul verses funk, but the DJ in the uptempo scene, say at the TORCH were still playing current records, but given the tag as NORTHERN SOUL Your remarks seem to suggest I know little about anything apart from northern soul, even though the modern soul scene plays records 25 years old? and most are failed DISCO RECORDS as a collector of all black music especially rare vinyl and I bet I can pick 10 better 70s tracks than most, if the modern scene is so big, why does it ride on the back of the rare soul scene, as it does, and why does it not embrace the very healthy current UK Black music scene? really do not what your point is, that you are trying to make? However I do fully except your point that CD are OK, but I would say "it's what's in the GROOVE that counts" CD don't have grooves do they? and DJ that are seen holding 2 mirrors, makes me think of handbag thieves? Listen to me rude boy, if you wanna learn sum-ting, so pick up ya feet and run, as the monkey man is after you! respect DAVE

Nice Charity Shop Find
HI ALL This is what makes my day, a very good find, the LP with "magic carpet ride" is collectible mainly by DJ's as for price well I sold a copy to DAVE RIMMER yonks ago at KEELE for £10, so you should have no problem selling it, but if you have not got the 45? and Pete has no more £125 ones to sell? keep it, as they are pretty hard to find, especially in charity shops, the TMG LP is worth about £20 DAVE

The Records That Nobody Likes
Hi All lets have proper rubbish please, not stuff related to losing your sort, when she found out you had screwed her best mate, and this was our record, or any other mush OK! As for DONNIE ELBERT who had original ALL-NIGHTER plays at the SCENE CLUB, TILES, MOJO, NIGHT OWL, & THE TWISTED WHEEL CLUB, With the fantastic "a little piece of leather", Even the remake on All-Platinum, got a chart entry on London records in the UK, So to state an artist such as DONNIE ELBERT, is suitable for inclusion, please reconsider, as he had many recordings to his name, and the fact he was an artist that had records that started the rare soul scene, if you need real evidence to not include him, in your own time down load this record, In fact I will put it on the SOULSOURCE RECORD OF THE DAY, As it is another record that I can recommend to every one on SOULSOURCE regardless to what they are into today music wise? DAVE 2 OF THE BEST & STIL CHEAP

What Uk Labels Are Considered Ovo
HI ALL Interesting thread, that seems to cover the OVO, as far as UK goes, However the basic rules, as far as the scene goes, is a bit like this:- RULE 1, DJ's should only play OVO, that's a must, and that's what is expected from the paying public, it's also a foundation block rule of the RARE SOUL SCENE. 2. Releases that are made to capitalise on hard to obtain records in any shape are worthless, and should be identified as such, in the manor like "Old Gold" 3. 60s 1st issues worth more than the US Original, (with only a few exceptions) 4.Most 60s UK pressed records, have a DEMO or PROMOTIONAL COPY with NOT FOR SALE (not all Labels though), DEMOS are worth about 25% more than the stock issue,(but again, a few issues are worth much more, normally 50% more). 5. Original acetates are nice and rare, but only worth a fraction of DEMOS, Some do have alternative cuts to what was released, these never come onto the market via dealers, so unless you are in the no! forget it, (you are not missing out as I have only come across 2) 6. most records that were released in the UK are worth below £100 if pressed after 1972, 7, UK collectors go for the the uptempo quality of records it does not have to be a US Back SOUL record, in fact it is this aspect what makes the NS Scene, their is no other way to put it. 8. Many UK Collectors have US Collections to be proud of, plus they have all round knowledge, so don't get mugged, always ask a UK collector 1st. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD TO LIST, DAVE

The Records That Nobody Likes
HI AL DOUG BANKS, I can understand if a record triggers of a personal issue, But as a record, I think you have it woefully wrong I really do! Over the years there have been some really awful records played and then there are the records that have crept onto the scene that belong more to celebrate a Chris Hill revival, what I class as forgotten DISCO, DOUG BANKS is a good example of early Chicago SOUL, it has a the right pace & tempo to make it powerful enough to dance to, and is a genuine rare find, It has also remains popular for many a year, and held a price when others are forgotten by many, the fact is the facts speak for themselves with this one, Also it was one of the first of it's type, and many would say it opened the door to many other great records, and indeed saved the scene at the time? Please think again Brother DAVE K

Are These Commonly Known Songs By Uk Crowds?
HI ALL Some nice records in my humble opinion, although I understand the feedback, it would be a shame if you drew an opinion that SOULSOURCE is about just elite rare records, or Modern SOUL? if you believe they are collectible, and as such by asking the question, you do! intern there are many people in the UK that would like tour titles, and people who would dance to them, so it comes down to taste, however they are not what I would call out right dancers myself, but I do not dance anymore? KEEP THE FAITH, DAVE

More Wigan Casino Memrobillia
Hi All Just a bit more to add to this subject,(PHOTOS) Over the past 30 years, I have looked back on the 5 years from 1968 - 1973 as the most influential period of my life, OK for most people their latent teenage years of self awareness are so memorable, and indeed very personal, However for me, and the original few who turned away from the progressive LOVE & PEACE, of 1967, which seems to have been embraced by the media, Those kids that like myself had been left to defend for themselves or were made an example of so the majority towed the line, Rebelled against authority& society's norm, The independence that we were looking for had to be created, and not just a progression of what had gone before us, this become inevitable for the 15 - 18 year old in 68, as the GANG aspect of youth sub culture become about, many loners who had become independent from adults, and had a mistrust for authoritarian ways, used the tactic of in your face aggravation, of challenging every thing that was incogrunate to themselves, believe in that they were unchallengeable by all including the LAW, This new wave of radical working class, would provoke such a reaction that the media, played it down, to such an extent that coverage of French students protesting against the Veitnam War or the MOON LANDING was given media covarage, My point is that their is no real photographic record of both the rise of the BOTHER BOT (SKINHEADS) and the in-depth underground music scene cultures that beget to further young people for 2 more generations, The underground music scenes that developed by the gang culture helped develop and empower the black population in the mid 70s to find a voice, and of course bought a scene of great youth culture around SOUL MUSIC that in-turn has helped many black artists to gain respect from nowadays world wide recognition, for their music, this clearly would have never happened, if it was not for the hard core values that I call the SPIRIT of 69. Again although we did not have the photographic records of this period, it has always been my belief that many pictures were taken by professionals at the time, but politics made them not usable by the media, and as the LAW got rid of all the gang leaders over a 18 month period, and the word SKINHEAD was used by the media to mean a right winger, in a juxtaposition the music aspects of the roots of gang culture has blossomed, And for this reason alone, even a cloakroom ticket or a 45 RPM record from that period has more significance than any great classic that has been discovered over the last 25 years? :g: AS ALWAYS DAVE K

More Wigan Casino Memrobillia
Hi All Thanks for the comment Steve, the strange thing about memorabilia is knowing what's what, as some of the stuff I have had now for over 45 years. and the Wigan stuff no matter what it is. will be 33 years plus as we all no 2013 celebrates 40 years, So a cloakroom ticket, that were issued in 10s of 1000s over the years, and in it's self a meaningless bit of rubbish, turns into a real piece of historical importance? as to me, it evokes and triggers of a part of the Wigan Casino Experience that we can all associate with, To me the cloakroom experience or the toilets are integral to whole aspect of the Casino, (and no I did not keep any crap from the toilets??) Interesting to note, that on the poster, at the bottom is a ticket to the MOD BALL, I have been told that that item is worth quite big money now, so what do you keep, or are you like me and kept loads of stuff, my reason was we did not have camera's, as today there must be 1000s of photos of all soul nights, DAVE

Mr Manships Auction Results 13-6-2012
HI ALL Personally I don't no why or where the vast majority get there prices from on SOULSOURCE in the 1st place? as most of the sales are over priced or not priced, I have never got my head around graded items, such as MINT- v EX+, At least John Descriptions I can relate with, plus they are meaningful, I agree that all his records are classics, but they are? also in the past I have wondered who pays these sort of prices, see my thread on the earl BLUES & SOUL MONTHLY MAG #1 - #23? which surely has decreased my chances of getting #2, unless someone offers me one at the proper price, I wonder if their is anyone who stands by their convictions on this thread??? let's wait and see? As for the Jades always a rare record and for years always over priced, however when it was played another rare record was played, a proper 4 figure record the DEL-LARKS Job opening? what do you think that it would fetch on your list or Johns?? Over the last 18 moths I have referred to John by his ROOTS nickname, that I gave him, simply to point out that when it comes down to REGGAE he gets the table turned on him compared to established top REGGAE DEALERS not in all items, and his descriptions are poor in relation to SOUL, in fact he reminds me of Mick Smith who just can't stand the stuff, hence he relies on close mates, From one extreme to another although the KIKI DEE made good money, and the fact that it is a top UK rare record, I think PETES comment that it was £125 last year as a bit soft, I do not dispute the fact one was sold for that price last year, but it ain't the going rate, it may be a dealers price he is thinking about?? and as a reminder of days gone by, here is one Micks list from OCTOBER 1999, as we are all aware of MICKS prices, make up your own minds on to-days prices compared to 13 years ago? DAVE

Are You A Rare Record Collector? Or A Stamp Collector?
"Good-a Ricky Billy Essex" it is said, Ian Dury opened ha unofficially never ever recorded 5" 78 RPM DEMO never released version of "CLEVER TREVER" STIFF OYWS ("on your way sunshine) 007? HI ALL...Whats that all about? well it is something I come out with while having a pint with the SPECIALS, & talking to Elvis Costello in the BADGER in Bournemouth 1979, and for those who still don,t get it, it is the opening line of the song "CLEVER TREVER", Spoonerism by yours truly to confuse the drunks in my company, along with my opening gambit "what's the matter for you? can't you want to? I was much younger and wiser back in 79, after turning my back on WIGAN & 9X out of 10 DEMOs? Q. Are you a record collector? or a Stamp collector?. Well a RC would probably guessed that I was referring to ID and his !NEW BOOTS & PANTIES LP (Gold Vinyl with bonus track "sex & drugs"} it's a great LP, However a Stamp Collector* would be looking for the record I talked about, even though it's untrue, someone will still look for it??? *the term I am using, "stamp collecting", I have nicked off PEP, as that's who first used it, instead of Anorak, A stamp collector wastes both time and money, on anything trying to impress record collectors? and are always seen holding a small pile off obscure records to sell for more unknown records, It is said that top record dealers, get an internal high (a bit like Having a James Arther on Crack) but has an awful side effect, the give away clue is the uncontrollable thumb and finger rub? yes indeed the stamp collectors, must have every thing or about every thing? On the other hand the RECORD COLLECTOR has OCD, and can be identified by 1. reputation 2. has a record collection 3 genuine & helpful, 4, a decent sort, makes a good pal. On the other hand the STAMP COLLECTOR Is 1. none of the above 2. a BITCH 3.Would have been rife for a good kick-in! if he belonged to any other SCENE 4 Makes me vomit, Are you a STAMP OR A RECORD COLLECTOR?? Well if you still don't understand, you must be a STAMP COLLECTOR. Remember Brothers & Sisters ("YOU ARE IN DENIALE, WHEN YOU LOSE SIGHT OF THE PYRAMIDS" (that is a original quote from me, and please quote me on that!") As for me, I am a Collector of RARE SOUL & REGGAE, and still takes the pills? here are some 70s DEMOS, That I was going to put on the other thread, but that would just cramp my style, What ever you collect, the records I have picked, all issued in the 70s were hard to find in this form? However the John Ford is one of the rarest records that has a interest to RARE SOUL Collectors, and is in the Top 10, of 70s releases, the others may not be stuff for STAMP COLLECTORS but show how varied and elective rare record collecting can be, As for the Modern Soul releases, only 5 or 6 are worth over £100 and are proper rare records, rather than in VOUGE, DAVE K

HI ALL...I received this poster, this week, unexpected but well appreciated, thanks to NICK MARSHALL & RUSS, NICE ONE AVE K
