We call it SOUL MUSIC so all of the goodness brings us together, that is all the rare soul scene, has always stood for TOGETHERNESS,& UNITY, We dislike words that end in IST or ISAM, as they are always preached by the obsessive in our society, the RARE SOUL SCENE DOES HAVE A FEW ISAMS that are except able such as headisam but I would prefer hedonistic, The roots of the SOUL SCENE are not about collecting old records, as back in the late 6fs records that got a UK RELEASE were often 1 -5 years old when issued, outlets for American soul music or Jamaican SKA, ROCK STEADY (BLUEBEAT) Was at the time very hard to get and those who did acquire the records found them in the most undesirable locations, in fact the white kids that owned Black Music records in the Mid 6ts were undesirable, typically suited and booted, sharp as a Barrow Boy with a tongue to match, these people are the real hard core working class MODS, now from 65 and onwards all of the records that were played in SOHO & the Northern All Night clubs, well 96% of it come from specialist shops the rest was bought in to the country by people in the merchant or air stewardesses, As such it was all obscure and current at it;s worst it was 3 years old, this is true about the Twisted Wheel one look at the Wheels top tunes in 1867 most were current US releases and some were only 2 years old, So all those who went to clubs north & South listened to the current soul of the day, in 68 as SOUL MUSIC changed Stateside, the music we listened to in the UK CHANGED? Jamaican Music changed into REGGAE, US SOUL turned into a more political foundation with more meaning, away went the love songs and in come the soul with a message, this crossover modern soul meant little to many British kids AREATHAS RESPECT & JAMES BROWN "SAY IT LOUD, I;M BLACK AND I AM PROUD" Meant nothing to most kids who got a laugh from "on the buses£ and "til death do us part" but forget what you have read, as both north & south still liked to Dance the night away especially when perking? as time goes buy we reach 1972 the latest SOUL SOUNDS WERE STILL BEING PLAYED YP NORTH & DOWN SOUTH, But the underground scene was split by uptempo soul verses funk, but the DJ in the uptempo scene, say at the TORCH were still playing current records, but given the tag as NORTHERN SOUL Your remarks seem to suggest I know little about anything apart from northern soul, even though the modern soul scene plays records 25 years old? and most are failed DISCO RECORDS as a collector of all black music especially rare vinyl and I bet I can pick 10 better 70s tracks than most, if the modern scene is so big, why does it ride on the back of the rare soul scene, as it does, and why does it not embrace the very healthy current UK Black music scene? really do not what your point is, that you are trying to make? However I do fully except your point that CD are OK, but I would say "it's what's in the GROOVE that counts" CD don't have grooves do they? and DJ that are seen holding 2 mirrors, makes me think of handbag thieves? HI ALL This is what makes my day, a very good find, the LP with "magic carpet ride" is collectible mainly by DJ's as for price well I sold a copy to DAVE RIMMER yonks ago at KEELE for £10, so you should have no problem selling it, but if you have not got the 45? and Pete has no more £125 ones to sell? keep it, as they are pretty hard to find, especially in charity shops, the TMG LP is worth about £20 DAVE

As for DONNIE ELBERT who had original ALL-NIGHTER plays at the SCENE CLUB, TILES, MOJO, NIGHT OWL, & THE TWISTED WHEEL CLUB, With the fantastic "a little piece of leather", Even the remake on All-Platinum, got a chart entry on London records in the UK, So to state an artist such as DONNIE ELBERT, is suitable for inclusion, please reconsider, as he had many recordings to his name, and the fact he was an artist that had records that started the rare soul scene, if you need real evidence to not include him, in your own time down load this record, In fact I will put it on the SOULSOURCE RECORD OF THE DAY, As it is another record that I can recommend to every one on SOULSOURCE regardless to what they are into today music wise? HI ALL Interesting thread, that seems to cover the OVO, as far as UK goes, However the basic rules, as far as the scene goes, is a bit like this:- RULE 1, DJ's should only play OVO, that's a must, and that's what is expected from the paying public, it's also a foundation block rule of the RARE SOUL SCENE. 2. Releases that are made to capitalise on hard to obtain records in any shape are worthless, and should be identified as such, in the manor like "Old Gold" 3. 60s 1st issues worth more than the US Original, (with only a few exceptions) 4.Most 60s UK pressed records, have a DEMO or PROMOTIONAL COPY with NOT FOR SALE (not all Labels though), DEMOS are worth about 25% more than the stock issue,(but again, a few issues are worth much more, normally 50% more). 5. Original acetates are nice and rare, but only worth a fraction of DEMOS, Some do have alternative cuts to what was released, these never come onto the market via dealers, so unless you are in the no! forget it, (you are not missing out as I have only come across 2) 6. most records that were released in the UK are worth below £100 if pressed after 1972, 7, UK collectors go for the the uptempo quality of records it does not have to be a US Back SOUL record, in fact it is this aspect what makes the NS Scene, their is no other way to put it. 8. Many UK Collectors have US Collections to be proud of, plus they have all round knowledge, so don't get mugged, always ask a UK collector 1st. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD TO LIST, DAVE

HI AL DOUG BANKS, I can understand if a record triggers of a personal issue, But as a record, I think you have it woefully wrong I really do! Over the years there have been some really awful records played and then there are the records that have crept onto the scene that belong more to celebrate a Chris Hill revival, what I class as forgotten DISCO, DOUG BANKS is a good example of early Chicago SOUL, it has a the right pace & tempo to make it powerful enough to dance to, and is a genuine rare find, It has also remains popular for many a year, and held a price when others are forgotten by many, the fact is the facts speak for themselves with this one, Also it was one of the first of it's type, and many would say it opened the door to many other great records, and indeed saved the scene at the time? HI ALL Some nice records in my humble opinion, although I understand the feedback, it would be a shame if you drew an opinion that SOULSOURCE is about just elite rare records, or Modern SOUL? if you believe they are collectible, and as such by asking the question, you do! intern there are many people in the UK that would like tour titles, and people who would dance to them, so it comes down to taste, however they are not what I would call out right dancers myself, but I do not dance anymore? Hi All Just a bit more to add to this subject,(PHOTOS) Over the past 30 years, I have looked back on the 5 years from 1968 - 1973 as the most influential period of my life, OK for most people their latent teenage years of self awareness are so memorable, and indeed very personal, However for me, and the original few who turned away from the progressive LOVE & PEACE, of 1967, which seems to have been embraced by the media, Those kids that like myself had been left to defend for themselves or were made an example of so the majority towed the line, Rebelled against authority& society's norm, The independence that we were looking for had to be created, and not just a progression of what had gone before us, this become inevitable for the 15 - 18 year old in 68, as the GANG aspect of youth sub culture become about, many loners who had become independent from adults, and had a mistrust for authoritarian ways, used the tactic of in your face aggravation, of challenging every thing that was incogrunate to themselves, believe in that they were unchallengeable by all including the LAW, This new wave of radical working class, would provoke such a reaction that the media, played it down, to such an extent that coverage of French students protesting against the Veitnam War or the MOON LANDING was given media covarage, My point is that their is no real photographic record of both the rise of the BOTHER BOT (SKINHEADS) and the in-depth underground music scene cultures that beget to further young people for 2 more generations, The underground music scenes that developed by the gang culture helped develop and empower the black population in the mid 70s to find a voice, and of course bought a scene of great youth culture around SOUL MUSIC that in-turn has helped many black artists to gain respect from nowadays world wide recognition, for their music, this clearly would have never happened, if it was not for the hard core values that I call the SPIRIT of 69. Again although we did not have the photographic records of this period, it has always been my belief that many pictures were taken by professionals at the time, but politics made them not usable by the media, and as the LAW got rid of all the gang leaders over a 18 month period, and the word SKINHEAD was used by the media to mean a right winger, in a juxtaposition the music aspects of the roots of gang culture has blossomed, And for this reason alone, even a cloakroom ticket or a 45 RPM record from that period has more significance than any great classic that has been discovered over the last 25 years? :g: AS ALWAYS DAVE K

Hi All Thanks for the comment Steve, the strange thing about memorabilia is knowing what's what, as some of the stuff I have had now for over 45 years. and the Wigan stuff no matter what it is. will be 33 years plus as we all no 2013 celebrates 40 years, So a cloakroom ticket, that were issued in 10s of 1000s over the years, and in it's self a meaningless bit of rubbish, turns into a real piece of historical importance? as to me, it evokes and triggers of a part of the Wigan Casino Experience that we can all associate with, To me the cloakroom experience or the toilets are integral to whole aspect of the Casino, (and no I did not keep any crap from the toilets??) Interesting to note, that on the poster, at the bottom is a ticket to the MOD BALL, I have been told that that item is worth quite big money now, so what do you keep, or are you like me and kept loads of stuff, my reason was we did not have camera's, as today there must be 1000s of photos of all soul nights, DAVE

HI ALL Personally I don't no why or where the vast majority get there prices from on SOULSOURCE in the 1st place? as most of the sales are over priced or not priced, I have never got my head around graded items, such as MINT- v EX+, At least John Descriptions I can relate with, plus they are meaningful, I agree that all his records are classics, but they are? also in the past I have wondered who pays these sort of prices, see my thread on the earl BLUES & SOUL MONTHLY MAG #1 - #23? which surely has decreased my chances of getting #2, unless someone offers me one at the proper price, I wonder if their is anyone who stands by their convictions on this thread??? let's wait and see? As for the Jades always a rare record and for years always over priced, however when it was played another rare record was played, a proper 4 figure record the DEL-LARKS Job opening? what do you think that it would fetch on your list or Johns?? Hi All I touch on the subject of how much the original copies of the BLUES & SOUL monthly Magazine was fetching on RJM (John Manship) MANSHIPS SITE, As discussed many times over the years, John has a knack of setting the bench mark for sales at all time highs, this ain't a problem, as with GLOBEL and other well established well run shops that sell the best. They have to work hard to make a profit, even more these Days, So MANSHIPs have the reputation of whatever you buy, you are making an investment, in the very best quality that they can find, of Items that are rare and Pricey even in a VG Condition, and John comments on every thing he auctions, has it;s own cult following, (well it has with me Johnny Boy) However I really would like to no what John thinks about the prices that gave been achieved for the copies that have been already auction, and what you think, As the price has risen, what would the insurance valuation of the 1st 23 copies? as there are still more to come I can only make a guesstimate of £3K. Also my search for #2 is over & with John selling a copy for £193, make me shudder at what all my papers mags Posters and other rare soul memorabilia is worth? maybe John could give us a update on rare Northern Soul related collect ables, as the prices can only get higher, and so far even the best repro, are easy to tell from original items (am I being a bit Naive about this},, Any way before I finish, I hope John does reply, as a guide to how he sees the future of this area ASALWAYS DAVE K

Hi All Thanks for this update on advice already given, If you notice on my postings, I try to give the record info, rough value, and the reason of why I picked the 45, as normally I play at least 10 records daily, in that selection, I try to justify why I would like to post as my pick of the day, which can be 1 of a myriad reasons? Personally anyone can use the YOU LIKE box or as you say, give a written reply. if the PRBLEM persists I will start the thread again on the 21st June which was the planned date or I can bring it forward, just PM if that would be the preferred answer to resole this, problem, For all of you who make this a popular thread, please continue with your selections of great 45s that in my opinion makes this thread a #1 winner as every 10 records that go on the site the selection is so eclectic compared to other soul lists, It would make a great series of VA Cd's to promote the site & SOULSOURCE As Always DAVE

You are right about the C&W aspect of the label, and BABARA MILLS was a white C&W SINGER, so was CHARLIE ROMAN, But the close link between 60s SOUL & C&W is hard to get your head around this side of the pond, as DIXYLAND consists of many ethnic groups and it shows if you follow each ethnic region, as you are aware there is a spine that runs from Louisiana Kentucky up to CANAD where the people still use french as the 1st language the music is french style Cajun, great stuff, then you have the black music that become known as ragtime our main man was SCOTT JOPLIN, he wrote opera's aimed at DIXY, of course you had the work songs that were called hollows, this form had a lead voice shouting out instructions and getting a response, work songs very similar were sung in the UK, FAITH SONGS were there for the poor, again with a vocal leader singing the gospel, eventually turning into gospel as we now no it, the BLUES has no real starting time, but it was WC HANDY who preached the hardships that effected everyone which in turn was influence followers of JOPLIN & HANDY but with the E chord being the BOSS as the musicians tried to follow the lead instrument as went up and down the E chord like a snake, normally it was a trumpet or piano leading but the sax was also in this fusion mix of E with it's razz a ma tazz, we call JAZZ,, HILLBILLY MUSIC turned itself when mixed with trad folk music into COUNTRY, WHICH WHEN MIXED WITH BLUES turned into ROCKABILLY LATER ROCK & ROLL, When mixed with GOSPAL and put in the hands of RAY CHARLES YOU HAD YOUR 1ST SOUL record WHAT I SAY, and when Sam Cook and Jackie Wilson sung BERRY GORDY invented MOTOWN, THAT WAS SO HUGE, EVEN THE WHITE LADIES TRIED TO SING IT IN NASHVILE, JUST LIKE BABARA did when she sung QUEEN OF FOOLS, Or something along them lines DAVE

HI ALL It really is a rare one, but if I had to chose a rare POLYDOR DEMO, It would be JAMO THOMAS - I SPY, FOR THE FBI, I have never owned either, so it's just a personal choice, but which is the rarest? Just read this thread again, and if I am right about Canada as the pressing plant, just as a reminder, if Ranking John remarks about Bootlegs is right, we are talking about a place nearly as far away from Detroit as the UK? Canada on the other hand is inches away, and remember in the STATES a hit record is based on 1st a local hit, 2nd what the septics call a national breakout, so RJM is talking pre NB, and then that makes sense of my CANADIAN press answer? also I can almost guarantee that the RIO COPY was not released at the same time as the RIC-TIC COPY, as we would expect the whole RIC-TIC catalog to have been issued on RIO? does that make sense, the record either way legit or boot, was pressed on the other side of the Atlantic, the USAF supplied the US FORCES with every thing they needed, plus it got a GERMAN RELEASE so why bootleg it, as PETE STATED a great record but very cheap, with the 1 exception, DAVE
