Who Discovered What ?
Hi all - I was playing a few LP,s to-day and amongst them was the Tramps Legendary Zing Album- Buddha from 1975.. now this is me question: -After reading the Sleeve notes it states or implies that there are 2 unreleased trax on the LP which is correct however it,s "hold back the night" that i seek clarification, if you are 55+ and was into soul since "Gods dog was a pup" you probably got "Zing went the String" as a new release and I also got "60 minute man" when it was in the US Soul Chart from Con-tempos in Hannaway St, 71/2 it was around this time I became aware of the Northern Soul scene through Mick S & Chris G, and amongst the PJ PROBYs and GENE PITNEY records that I owned, I heard the Crewe DJ Alan Day play the instrumental sides of both records, as i had them It was a good feeling.. Now to my recall about "hold back the night" it was discovered by (He who is not mentioned) on Ampex 4 track tape by accident and he got 3 or 4 10" discs cut and I can clearly remember the first time it was played and I remember even the Meccas dancers paused when the vocal came in to the familiar sound of SCRUBOARD the next day following a night in the Casino we went to the CATS WHISKERS in Burnly it was hail storming as we taveled there? at the C W (he who shall not) played it again along with Human Jungle and the Casuleers, it has taken all these years for the Penny to drop, as back then I could not work out how he got acces to the tape and Disc cutter, I had some limited experiance of Studio running and thee is no way you can get acces especially to a major lable tapes so his entry and contacts must of comefrom PYEs A&R man Dave Mclear??so who really discoverd this vocal as it is the most popular Northern Soul track ever played on UK Radio or did come from a uknown studio engineer trying to conpete with the success of the group on Philly Int, by cashing in? and then brought to the attention of (he who cant be named) what is the truth I demand the truth I tells You DAVE KIL TELL ME THE TRUTH NOW!!

Updated Values On Records
Nice one and as I thought it realy is a matter of taste also demand, The good thing is at least you have acknowleded their worth the GMC 45 is off course the a 45 with no demand apart from the lable but it is differant, however it shows how how much we are in tune as I deliberatly did not put a big money record in there they are run of the mill finds that when you here them you can then decide if they belong n the collection,....A few months back at wolves Record Fair Mick Smith pulled a record from his US Box and reminded me that back in the 7ts this record for him always associted me with Eddie Miller - Skate & Shuffle-Loo VERVE VK-10494 a great Uptempo Dancer, I gave him £10 for it as way back then any thing on Verve or MGM I bought this was pretty hard to locate, however the other side Sophisticated Walk is so under estimated as I do believe know one has bothered to flip it £10 a Bargin I would sell it for more A Strong Recomendation as a must have 45 in your collection? thanks to all replys DAVE KIL

MY VALUATION ON THE 7 RANDOM TUNES ARE AS FOLLOWS: - £25 a great tune not released in the UK? as good as the Jacksons,£30+ good solid fast FUNK with good glitz.£40+ again a good funk tune and quite rare quality appeal.£15 this one sounds brilliant if you are speeding???? worth a punt??£20 just for the label and then some as it is a strong Lew Kirkland tune £30?£25 a Modernsoul Sound of merrit.£00 as a uknowon uknplayed tune thevalue is still to be determined, but as it is £20 for UK lable collectors? record simular to ACE record on "LOCK STOCK" UK Funk Rock,,,It,s a good one.I will list a few more easy ones net time as although 150 views only 2 replies, this tells me a lot? THANKS FOR INPUT GUYS if any one disagrees with my priceing/valuation please state why? DAVE KIL

Updated Values On Records
Nice one this is a good start and what I expected, as a Record collector of Black Music I cant leave records behind especially if they are unknown to myself, as that is what the collecting side of the soul scene is all about, it always p**ses me of when I meet someone with the current sounds and that's all they have! a good example is STANKEY COBLESTONE real value? $20 Tops yet I have seen it sell for $150+ and the Vonetts sell at an average price of $100+ this is where I get confused on today's pricing surely it is common knowledge that the Stanky record flooded the importers markets in the 7ts and it appeared often in soul packs as did Sandra Philips You succeeded?? this was my valuation on the records as follows: - P**S I FORGOT WHAT ORDER I PUT THEM IN HANG ON I WILL BE BACK DAVE KIL

Updated Values On Records
Hi class Can you help: - over the last few years, yours truly does not get about much, and it has been 3 to 4 years since I would meet collectors every Saturday morning at John & Malc,s shop. The issue of concern is how much is a record worth? And before we start I am not looking at issues like what you are prepared to pay or whats in or out of favour that dictates the value? I no and very aware of all that, what I want to know is you are aware that certain records will always be rare because you no the history and so on, eg: UK rarities what is there true value especially the classics? I have been corrected 2 times by respected collectors about over pricing, I am not a dealer it is based on knowledge and experience of collecting, also it,s hard to convert the price of records that you have had for many years or at the time you got from Junking or car-booting in the early to mid 8ts for example in Wolves in 81 I found about 500 classic Rock steady & early Reggae I paid £7.50 for the lot many original Red & silver Coxones Blue Coxsone UK Studio One, I think most of us had many a good find in the 7ts & 8ts junking but how do you get to value them as a true estimate the value in the new decade that's only 2 weeks away, below are 4 records that have been on the shelves for a number of years please give me a indication of value and I can see if my value is near to the one you give this is very random: - The Newcomers - "the whole world is a picture show" Truth 4315 ..I paid £1 2010 value? The Young Disciples - "BANG BANG BANG" GATEWAY (no cat ') Junk Shop find.Betty & Angel - "Honey Coated Loving" EVERY DAY records VU 1000B got from Frankie Baggot Willenhall £0 swapped a knackered copy of Hose for Sale MJ OK Spring.Gloria Henry - "Will you show me" OSSI SS1106-2 come from London dealer with 50 singles that included an orig Candi Staton "the Upper Hand" UNITY sold it to Mick S this was the only time I had seen this classic V Rare..great backing tune she sounds like the producer owed her big time as she cant sing?Dee Dee Butler - "SWEET BABY" SMC #110....This is a rare label with some really great tunes on it this record is Funky but it,s the label that's why I have kept it? Car boot find.Frankie Gearing - "Child Please" BOUND SOUND records RF-1004-B.....From BUTCH.Freeway "Jump up and turn Around" PALADIN PAL 1 (UK 45- written by Andy Fairweather Low 1975..sounds not to bad if you are into modern/crossover 7ts uptempo dancers) I have a load of is it or ain't it records I cant leave them once I find one that is unknown??WELL IT IS DOWN TO ANYONE WHO KNOWS THERE RECORDS SOME OF THEM ARE WORTHY OF PLAYING OUT AND YOU WILL KNOW WHICH ONES? THIS WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL AS IT WOULD BE A START.. DAVE KIL.

Who Discovered What ?
Mick Smith has the rights to Landslide and I clearly remember the first time he payed it was in Hitchin at the Dive he played the B side by mistake? he and Clive had returned from the States with a handful of rare tunes, as I have said a few times he/they would take the to the Mecca and either He that shall not be mentioned (HTSNBM) or Tony Jebb would play them also Kieth Minshal did the same as he knows what the dynamic due found as well as me or Cloth Ears & Adey,as I say in them days I was surrounded by records before they went UP T NORTH DAVE KIL

Gil Scott-Heron - The Bottle
Hi All back in 75 I did a couple of Gigs with Gil on a one occasion i told him about he bottle track that was played up North he told me it was a very powerful number on par and written and inspired by Lennon a Mecca in style? I also mentioned the fact that it had been covered by Brother to Brother he gave me the impression that it was very much a part of the LP and not a single yet he was not surprised about the track having a 45 release as he called it "Disco Appeal" the Strata East copy first appeared on the list from John Anderson "Soul Bowl" as such it is a legit record as it fits in with Gil's account! however like many US companies in the late 6ts and in the 7ts they issued demo tracks as 45s a concept we in the UK did not embrace till the 8ts Madonna Micheal Jackson LPs all had tracks as singles? the copy in the scan is different from my copy as most have a star on label, I recommend you get his LP I HAVE ADDED FRENCH COPY? IT SEEMS LEGIT?? DAVE KIL

Chubby Checker/clarence Reid/roy Thompson Info
tHIS IS WHY SOME OF US COLLECT "BRITISH": -the CHUBBY CHECKER is clearly the copy to have? The uk Columbia lable was in the main used for UK artists only, the big exception were the OKeh issues, and there rareity also you will ee te words "SOUL SUPPY" UK45s with this or "DISCOTEQUE 55/7 series" atract UK conpleatest colectors as does the stock and Demo some of the main uk collecter need both? this is a big thing for UK record collectors Demo Copies are always more disirable and over the last 20 years the condition is a big factor the all want mint copies? the RED & WHITE WALTER JACKSON is one of the most wanted of the UK Columbia-OKeh records, I aint going to upset TED and put my value on it but try and by one as again its a trade record for best deal not a cash deal, once again if anyone plays this out it should resemblemy copy however the US copy is also desirable in conparison to your CHUBBY CHECKER? Cover Ups
- Johnny Sayles
If you look at all the bootlegs on EBay it amazes me how they get away with it? and who buys it on a regular basis, Way back in the earl/mid 7ts most bootlegs were aimed for the majority of the scene which was the Dancers/Clubber's as that was the Guts and indeed the soul of the scene, I am sure you would agree?. However there were a few counterfeits records that fooled me from 72/3 The JS I found out just in the nick of time, but it was Butch Baker Fat Man at the GO GO B?W Working inst, and to make it worse Mick had the rare demo Robin a GO GO, not sure how much that is worth today but then it was a top Mecca record, Alexander Patten or Patton was almost perfect as every body seemed to forget which was the legit one if my memory serves me OK today the real one has a Daisy in the matrix? if you have had it for 20 years keep it in your play box you would be surprised how many top oldies DJs play boots second issues and so on unless you frequent the set up side and spend 30 minutes observing the DJ you will see what I mean and also it is still worth £10+ and more if you try and sting someone just as you got stung? DAVE (MORE THAN SKIN DEEP) KIL.- Roscoe Robinson
Ted I have worked this out however it may mean something to someone, 2 times today i have F***ed up iam not to well mate. Manship HAS A Geri Thats enough at £60 so my £25 was about right..yes SOZ there is a DJ copy of donald Hieght tak of the grapvine with 5 min to go now thats rare DAVE- Roscoe Robinson
TED I am not disagreeing with you or any body my price is based on availability more and more these days as we all are getting older top collectors feel that the true collectobles of the scene are falling price wise I have spoke to Mick today about this very subject that rare records on his lists in the 8ts are still listed at almost the same price? there are 2 issues here Ted in the old Days we worked out the price and rareaty from making contacts buying many records on spec and unplayed and the origanal dealers were very differant from the collectors, In 1975 if you would have told me that Mick Adey and so many more were going to be top DJs and main players NO never in fact I remember in 78 at bedfor Mick Giving me the records to put on the decks?? the experiance of Northern Soul and Mick Agrees was the Journy the change of attitude from were we come from but the DJs I said this the other day and think about it how did you learn what was what in the early days, My piont is the same today as it was back in 73 if i liked it i would try and buy it if i could locate it And living in Letchworth no one was talking rare soul then apart from Mick who is a profesional in the trade dependable bloke, agreed were haveing been down that route and wasteing £1000s I put a true value on the Record I agree that I would not get it but lets say for insurance purposs, at the lat Wolves record fair Micks Box Containd some excellant UK issues that years ago iwould of killed for to round up its all to easy if you play the game that i used to do at wigan and so on when a record box come into the room and its in the hands of a dancer who is speeding buy the box of him thats how i built my collection andsacrifice tyour big sound for 2 lesser recordsbut when put together and with demand the big one you swapped would not buy one of the 2 back the issue how much money is being payed for the top tunes that are only andforever be wanted by a small amount of middle aged men my demo cost about £7 and I have never paid more than £100 for a record and that is very rare most of my collection came from the old schoolway of buy ing and swapping and haveing contacts? the killer of the scene as we used to say is that certain people have milked it dry and not prepaird to move over and let fresh people have ago and the reason is they cant as every thing is invested into the way its all run Next time you are selling UK stuff give me an oppertunity Ted as if you sell rare records cheap because whtever I need 20 To conplete however I aint got £1000s to throw at records i have made thedecsion 13 years ago my records give me great pleasur and I made sure that the habbit of always chaseing the latest tune is an expensive trip? DAVE KILWORTH Record Collector for 46 years XX- Chubby Checker/clarence Reid/roy Thompson Info
All great records there is a but? the rule of thumb on what gets played used to be origanls only with the exception of those djs that were already at the top anyway as they used EMIs Discs & If it came out on a UK label was a sure way to ensure that the records and many more like you have mention are not only cheap but dont get play. as a UK collectore the chubby Checker on a uk isse is far more elusive than the US record and of course the UK demo in this case is triple the issue as UK CP Demo were limeted to and I may be wrong but my unfo says 99 copies thats why they are so rare however the Boogaloo demo is less desirable of the 4 releases that came out although the rarest one to find i think is at the Discotheque Demo but of course the big one "I just dont Know" the genral rule on priceing is as follows if it was a US record that got a UK release the US record is always worth at least half of the UK value and add anouther third+ if its a DEMO, and there are some exceptions, if it is a UK record that was never released in the States and was withdrawn over here then you are onto a winner as most collectores of soul tend to be purists and wamt origanal records not forgn reissues? however the collecting bug for uk records never leaves so dont start to collecting now as most of the records are in the hands of people who are known to one anouther or will be loyal to 1 or 2 main dealers with regular purcheses and this loyalty goes one step further if you sell up the person/dealer will be expecting you to give him first picking i have always found this strange thats whyI mainly collect from many places??? the same apys to the others so unless a uk collector and the best known is Mick Smith even though he hardly plays uk stuff, you have a free licance to play them until a old soul ref tells you not to, the exception to the rule are 3 or 4 UK titles that although rare the US one is rarer and the well known uk exceptions are Dance to the Music on colubia Jimmy Thomas Mister bang man johny whyt demo and so on ? any question ask ? I need to stop as I am feeling a bit unwell DAVE - Johnny Sayles
