3 Questions About A Record
1) Yes, I know it but I don't own a copy. 2) No, I don't know why. But I suspect that it's the flipside, "Just When I Thought (You Were Mine)", which is the "right" tune. One for the beat ballad collectors or - if speeded up - perhaps something for the popcorn scene. 3) I have no idea but yes, probably. I sure wouldn't though. Stick it on eBay with a soundclip!

Billy Sha Rae
There doesn't seem to be much info about him out there. A thing which has intrigued me for a while is that at the end of the following clip of the MC5 playing "The American Ruse" on a TV show called The Lively Spot": Download Video Youtube Link The presenter says something along the lines of: "stay tuned for more performances by Little Milton, Billy Sha-Rae, Little Milton amongst others" So... who's got this entire show? There might very well exist TV footage of Billy and I'd really like to see it.

Rance Allen Gonna Be A Showdown
It was issued on both Gospel Truth and Stax in the US. The Gospel Truth release is from 1972 and the Stax issue is from 1977. A truly superb tune.

Cheap Lp But Expensive 7''
James Walsh Gypsy Band - "Cuz It's You Girl" - £5 on LP, £75-£150 on 45.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that the scan above is taken from his copy.

Solid Solution "Think About It Girl", about £25-£50 on LP, and I can't even estimate how much the 45 would cost if an original copy ever turned up for sale... Tony Fox "Let Love And Be Loved", reasonably cheap on LP, very expensive on 45.

Angela Davis & The Mighty Chevelles
I agree.

I've Just Seen Mavis Staples In Concert
Yep! Sounded great.

I've Just Seen Mavis Staples In Concert
...and it was unbelievably good!!! Defintiely do go and see her if you have the chance! She's still VERY energetic and has got a truly amazing voice which at times reduced me to tears. A guy called Donny Gerrard handled some of the backing vocals... can it be THE Donny Gerrard of "He's Always Somewhere Around" fame on Greedy? Top concert!!!

Angela Davis & The Mighty Chevelles
Most tunes can be bought cheap if they are unknown or un-hyped no matter how good they are, and the only time this Angela Davis 45 was cheap was when pretty much no one knew about it. Matt Weingarden (Mr. Finewine) have played it twice on his radio show, the first time on the 9th of October 1998 and then again on the 25th of March 2005. The first time I heard it was on the March 2005 date. I loved it and went almost crazy during the following weeks while trying to find a copy because they just weren't around. Then, as if by magic, Puresoul Records from Germany listed a copy on their site on the 15th of April 2005 which I bought for €30. That copy had been found a couple of days prior to that in a store called Downtown Records in Berlin. After that two copies have sold on eBay, both in December 2006 from different sellers, selling for $372 and $481, one copy going to the UK and one to Japan. Check them out here: https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=260065212495 and here: https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=230068827702 And that was when this still was a pretty unknown record to most people (I'm ofcourse not claiming that it was unknown prior to 1998 or 2005, and some collectors most likely have copies tucked away in their collections, BUT it wasn't exactly widely talked about or well known). The only exposure it had gotten up until Arthur Fenn started DJing with it and it appearing on Manship's auction, was via Finewine's show and from my swap CDs, DJing, MP3-mixes and raving about it on forums in general - and let's be honest, that's not much exposure and obviously went past most people. I'm not saying that it's the rarest record ever, but it sure isn't easy to find either.

Some Acetates I Just Got A Hold Of
Marc, I get your point. Thanks for taking the time to listen to them.

Some Acetates I Just Got A Hold Of
Just out of interest, where did I state anything about these records having soul content or being "fit" for the northern scene? I was simply asking if anyone had any info on these tracks because there are quite a lot of people on this forum who know quite a bit about records. The Dick Charles acetate is, in any case, a great piece of music. It is one-sided so has only got that number on one side. The number being the date of recording seems reasonable, making it 15th of January 1965 or 5th of November 1965.

Some Acetates I Just Got A Hold Of
Thanks for the information! It all makes perfect sense because another IBC acetate which I found in the same batch includes both sides of Ray & Elaine's "Never Can A Tear" b/w "Please Be Patient" 45 on DJM from 1969. I'll try to get in contact with Elaine and find out if the tracks above are unissued or not. I agree, the number on the left side is a bit confusing. But perhaps it was the third track recorded at a single session and so a number was associated to the tune by default? Recording three tracks during a session and choosing the best two for the 45 happened quite a lot. I honestly don't know, just speculating. Thanks again for your comments!

Some Acetates I Just Got A Hold Of
Thanks for your comments and suggestions Tony. Mick Patrick commented the Dick Charles acetate when I posted about it on the Spectropop mailing list and suggested that it might be an unissued The Persians (on Pageant) tune. Apparently their "Get A Hold Of Yourself" is co-written by Kaye. I really like this tune. Did anyone else listen to these? Any comments at all? Here's a picture of the acetate:

Junior Mcchants
It regularly sells for £15-£25 on eBay.

Northern Soul 45s, Good Stuff
WOW! Siv Malmkvist. One of the most successful swedish artists of all time. Was really big in Germany during the 60s (which is when I guess she recorded this).

Some Acetates I Just Got A Hold Of
I've recently gotten a hold of a couple of acetates that I don't know much about but hopefully someone out there can help me out. The first one is a one-sided Dick Charles Recording Service acetate. There's no artist listed. The title of the track is "You're Gonna Be Missed". It's written by Buddy Kaye and Philip Springer. It's published by Budd Music. No song with this title is mentioned in either of those songwriters BMI or ASCAP entries. Have a listen to it here: https://www.shingaling.com/YoureGonnaBeMissed.mp3 The second one is a double-sided IBC Sound Recording Studios acetate (with a London, England address). There's no artist listed. The titles of the tracks are "Get A Hold Of Yourself" and "The Sun Is Coming In". There are no songwriters credited. Both tracks are published by Mills Music Ltd. Have a listen to these tracks here: https://www.shingaling.com/TheSunIsComingIn.mp3 https://www.shingaling.com/GetAHoldOfYourself.mp3 If anyone of you have got any info on these tracks (if they are known/issued/unissued/etc.), please let me know. Thanks in advance.

The Two New Kent Cds And One From Numero Group
Pretty much everything on that compilation is good, but some of my faves are Trevor Dandy "Is There Any Love", Preacher & the Saints "Jesus Rhapsody", The Triumphs "We Don't Love Enough", Gospel Comforters "Jesus Will Help Me", Modulations "This Old World Is Going Down", Shackleford Singers "God Is All Over Me", Universal Jubileers "Childhood Days"... and Voices Of Conquest's absolutely mental percussion fest "O Yes My Lord" has got to be heard to be believed!!!

The Two New Kent Cds And One From Numero Group
Totally agree, the Twinight and Deep City CDs are great. Nice to see that more and more US labels are putting some time and effort into their releases. The gospel funk compilation from Numero is also superb as well is the Capsoul label one. Looking forward to their forthcoming Tap label compilation which I've heard is in the pipeline.

The Two New Kent Cds And One From Numero Group
Have been listening to them all day yesterday and this entire morning and just have to say that they are absolutely superb. Not only does both include brilliant music from beginning to end, but they've also got some seriously top notch liner notes written by Tony Rounce and well designed booklets. Lovely! I'm also listening a lot to Numero Group's latest "Eccentric Soul"-series release dedicated to the Prix label. Superb liner notes and booklet to this one as well.

Rex Garvin - Queen Of The Gogo / The Other Man
I just got a batch of 45s from the US and one of them is Rex Garvin's "Queen Of The Gogo" on the Canterbury label. Is it a bootleg? Wasn't it issued on Tower originally? The fact that the package came from the US got me a bit confused. The Canterbury issue is mentioned in the SoulfulKindaMusic discography. Can anyone please enlighten me.
