Mix 4.32 long) Strange that the "first mix" has got a higher catalogue number than the supposedly "second mix" though. Would really like to hear it.

No it's not. I'm not saying anything about it being northern or not/soul or not, but it's a great tune. Would've sounded even better with different production. It's pretty much perfect eurovision song contest fodder and would probably have won if it had entered. Great verses, catchy chorus, nice breaks, decent lead vocal (Steve Brokenstein?) and an obligatory key change towards the end (or am I just imagining that?). It's brilliant, and IF written by Levine, definitely one of his finest moments since "24 Hours A Day" by Barbara Pennington.

I like it. It's a near perfect pop tune. But Levine indeed, and I could've done without the pseudo-60s production and backing vocals.

What a monster of a tune! Have you heard Chuck Cornish "A Tribute To Mohammed Ali" on White Cliffs? Same backing track, very different lyrics. Both are brilliant! I think the Chuck Cornish 45 was released prior to Senator Jones.

I'm quite happy with the ongoing "Complete Motown Singles" box-set series. Volume 5 will be released any day now and it contains ALL a and b sides from 1965. There's no Ric-Tic/Golden World stuff on there, but as far as reissues of Motown stuff goes, I think I'll be pretty satisfied with these box-sets when they've reached 1972 in a couple of years. Several years ago I read a label discography for the Athens label and noticed that Bill & Will's pounding "Goin' To The River" was supposed to have had a local release on that label prior to being leased to Checker. Over the years I started to suspect that it was a misprint of some kind... until a copy on Athens suddenly turned up the other week. Feels kinda nice having them both side by side after such a long search. Not exactly soul, but a firm favourite of mine and apparently a play at some of the more r&b-firendly clubs.
