  1. Dakar went through three numbering systems and all had different label layouts. The first series (in 1968-ish) DAKAR 1449 - DAKAR 1452 had a plain black/silver layout: The second series looked similar, but was coloured. It was acrive from 1968-1971 and went from DAKAR 600 - DAKAR 626: The third series was completely different. It was active from 1972-1977 and went from DAKAR 4501 - DAKAR 4569:

    £100-£150.
  3. It would really surprise me if the 5+ minute soundclip above is anything else than an early rough mix. There are hardly any effects or compression evident at all. I was thinking the exact same thing as you Paul when the previous Myron & E tune "leaked" - that it lacked punch and was badly mixed and mastered. Then the 7" of it dropped and it sounded exactly like it should. Timmion are usually spot on with what they're doing and I'm sure they'll get it right this time around as well.
  4. Jeff Hannusch's books about New Orleans soul/r&b are absolutely essential: The Soul of New Orleans: A Legacy of Rhythm and Blues https://www.amazon.co.uk/Soul-New-Orleans-Legacy-Rhythm/dp/0961424583/ I Hear You Knockin: The Sound of New Orleans Rhythm and Blues https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hear-You-Knockin-Orleans-Rhythm/dp/0961424508/ There's a book by Barney Hoskyns about the strong links between southern soul and country music which is superb: Say it One Time for the Broken Hearted: Country Side of Southern Soul https://www.amazon.co.uk/Say-One-Time-Broken-Hearted/dp/074754137X/ If you want to take a look at the record industry side of things, I would really recommend this epic book by John Broven: Record Makers and Breakers: Voices of the Independent Rock 'n' Roll Pioneers https://www.amazon.co.uk/Record-Makers-Breakers-Independent-Pioneers/dp/025203290X/ If you want to find out about the development from 70s soul to disco, it doesn't get any better or more thorough than Vince Alettis's recent: The Disco Files 1973-1978: New York's Underground, Week by Week https://www.amazon.co.uk/Disco-Files-1973-1978-Yorks-Underground/dp/0956189601/ I'd advise you to avoid all books that are written with the northern soul scene in mind if you want to learn about the history of US r&b/soul music from a scientific point of view.
  5. No, the copy last week on eBay sold for $765 (about £475).

Definitely a strange one to sell covered up as it has been sold a couple of times during the past years on eBay by high profile sellers uncovered and with soundclips. They've all sold for a lot of money so I'm surprised if anyone that keeps an eye on eBay's completed auctions would've missed it. In any case a superb, obscure and rare 45!

  8. Do you remember what the flipside was? And was it on DY-RICH?

A copy sold on eBay for $107 a couple of days ago, but it usually fetches $60-$100. He's got a third 45 on the Hollywood label as well.
  10. The version of "Midnight Affair" on the Demon LP has got a different vocal take compared to the original US Truth label 45 and the backing track is indeed mixed differently. The differences in the vocal are subtle, but they're definitely there and she phrases certain words differently.
  11. One of his more obscure releases and definitely worth a spin! Both sides on that Clarence Reid 45 are good in my opinion but have only ever seen it on playlists from "pub" type events.

  13. Because it seems to be quite a hassle to list records on their site and they charge higher fees than what eBay and PayPal (combined!) does on a sale. If you list a record on eBay(.com) and you're getting payment through PayPal, then the combined fees usually comes to 9%-12% (or less) of the final price. Here's some quotes from the terms of use for soulbyauction.com: "We will charge 15% commission on the final sale price, subject to a minimum of £5." "In the event of a record not selling on the auction, there is a handling fee of £5 per item."
  14. EX to M- copies usually sell for £30-£40 on eBay, so based on that the copy you're describing shouldn't be more than £15-£20 at most. Then again... a record with background noise, especially styrene noise, is pretty much worthless to a lot of people.

OK, I misunderstood. I thought you already had heard "You're Welcome To Try" and was asking about its "funk flipside". "YWTT" is in refosoul: /more/soul-library/little-willie-jones-you-are-welcome-to-try-vrc Punchy tune and gritty vocals, but a bit of a mess to my ears. Horribly out of tune in places.

"You're Welcome To Try" is the "funk" side. The flipside of that is a ballad.
  17. Do you know if all multicoloured copies are like that? I've had to send back 2 multicoloured ones because they were described as M- but played with distortion in one channel. I kind of "gave up" on that record after those two... Is there any distortion on the red/white labeled copies?
  18. Manship's guide claims that it was issued both as LE MANS 002 and LE MANS 004. The only release I've ever seen has got catalogue number LM-004. It might just be a bit of confusion though as the labels states the matrix/master numbers as OM-001 and OM-002. Can anyone please throw up a scan of the LE MANS 002 release if it exists? Some scans of the LE MANS 004 demo and issue (NOTE the matrix/master numbers on the labels):

Interestingly written and arranged by Doc Bagby. THE Doc Bagby? Didn't know he was active that late into the 60s (early 70s?).
  21. I think the oddest thing is that the "guide price" for the Hannibal 45 is £30. It's not easy to locate copies of.
  22. Wouldn't mind a MK4 myself. Still haven't found one.
  23. Probably less than that. Winfield Parker's "I Wanna Be With You" is one of the best uptempo 70s soul records ever in my opinion. Craig Moerer sold a M- copy on eBay two days prior to mine(!) for $22.50. He's got stock of it at $60 each. I just got really lucky with that recent copy of mine. There were 2 bidders battling for it between $20 and $300. Then a third bidder came in towards the end and sniped it for $305. Who knows what his maximum bid was? There were some other 45s in that auction round that also went for unusually high prices that I'm surprised that you haven't picked on yet (Side Effect, Jackie Hines, Sylvia Striplin etc.).
  24. I need an original issue of this record (5444A in the runout groove, NOT 5544A). If anyone has got a copy for sale, please PM me with price and condition. Thanks in advance.
  25. The buyer payed within an hour. He's a regular customer of mine and bought 20+ other 45s in this auction round as well.
