Oddball Instro - Martin's Mustangs - VRC - Mod ??
Here's a bit of an oddball pulled out of the storage boxes recently....same label as Judy McDonald / Mellowettes, Little Willie etc. Martin's Mustang's - Funky Broadwalk / Soul Jug - VRC VG £20 Record has surface marks and some ring dirt on the label (see scan) but plays well above grade (and better than the copy on YT below). Can't seem to find much on it except this link on YT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJh7qAXYyT8 ( not a good recording tho ) Flip a bit slower but a good instro to. PM me if interested. Paypal as F&F or +4%. Post is £1.50 UK First, £2.50 recorded or £5 rest of world std air mail. Cheers

Phyllis Brown - I've got something on my mind
Both label variants share the same release number (630) which is pretty common with the good Major. Some releases on Le Cam, Charay etc used the same number up to 4 times and by different artists with different flipsides or completely different records. Needless to say trying to do a discography of any of his labels is a complete nightmare. I had both but sold the green coloured label when it became popular but still have the white and purple, not an issue for me.

Phyllis Brown - I've got something on my mind
Major Bill who owned the label and others issued the 45's as when when he required and it seems sometimes completely randomly. The label numbering was also pretty random at times. The purple and white is the second issue but it was done by the owners and as part of their "normal" activities so there is no issue in playing it.

Unusual Places You Found Imported 45s
Back in the mid / late 70's I was around 14. My grandparents insisted on me going with them on a visit to see some of their relatives...you know the kind they visit every 10 years. So we arrived at the house to be greeted by an old fella. As we sat in the living room they were all chatting away and I was thinking about when we could leave, when the old guy asked me if I liked music. My grandmother chimed in and said "yes - he likes that Northern Soul". The old fella got up and left the room and came back with one of those old battered leather look suitcases from the 40's and 50's and plonked it on the table telling me to have a look. Open it up and thought what the f..... it was full of mint US Gordy, Tamla, Motown etc 45's in company sleeves. My knowledge wasn't great at the time so I recognised some of the chart hits but there was hundreds more I didn't recognise. How did this guy who must have been 70 plus get these 45's and why ? Never did find out how he got them, but a totally surreal experience.

Drill holes in records
Around 10 - 12 years ago I came a cross a website primarily selling books but also had some 45's - virtually all Motown related labels from the 60's. There were some nice white demos if I recall. I spoke by phone to the owner and he said that all 45's were mint condition and unplayed but had DR written on every label . I asked how he'd come by them and he said that his store used to get sales reps coming in and he got them off a guy who was selling for Motown and the sales guy only had Motown related 45's. Unfortunately he wanted silly money for them so I gave it a pass. The site disappeared quickly afterwards and further phone calls went unanswered so I assume they went under.

Almost Forgotten 3 - Early 80's Allnighter Sounds PART 3
The Windmill Club brings back some memories. On the way from the train station to the venue once, me and a couple of mates were chased in the streets by a couple of Bikers wielding a bit of 4 x 2 timber each. Apparently we were mistaken for some local gang who had pissed these guys off. We were only 15 or 16 at the time and fortunately much fitter and faster runners than they were

Test press
Probably an old UK EMI disc they used to cut in the 70's with a self done label. Definitely NOT a test press.

Record shipping from the USA
I vaguely recall some 45 imports in the 70's having a sticker on them saying something about duty paid. There again I could be having a senior moment.
-
Record shipping from the USA
Its always been done that way. There are only so many 45's you can get in your hand luggage
-
Record shipping from the USA
If you just quickly google a local shipping / logistics company in your area, they are usually hooked up globally with partners overseas. Normally they can make all the necessary arrangements for you and will be aware of tariffs and duties and will be able to give you a complete cost "door to door". Normally they will rent a container or space within a container depending on the size of shipment. Take the best ones out first though. Info comes from a guy I know who used to import bathroom stuff from China and it was all taken care of by the shippers.

Help Please - Shrine label scans
OK so I'm getting all arty farty and decorating the music man cave. I've done some stuff with company sleeves but I've seen these collages of label scans on the interweb so I thought I'd try my hand at it. So I've got myself a frame, some backing card and spray glue and I'm ready for the kick off. Going to start with the Shrine label and have some good label scans and I have access to a top quality printer so they are nice and sharp. Problem is I'm missing one of my favourites.....The Prophets 'One gold piece' and the flip label as I've laid A&B labels side by side. Anyone out there has a good scan of both sides to help me out ? Thanks in advance Andy

Sherrell bros current price
The key word I wrote here is "relatively" i.e. in comparison to records where there are only a handful of known copies. So if I have something rare with say 4 copies then something in the 200's is relatively common. My guess is that based on the fact that so many dealers had it around the same time with some doing a front page focus on it, there are probably more than that. No arguments its a nice record and yes most records were cheap and it may not be found in quantity again. My point is that the price has more to do with demand than rarity.
-
Sherrell bros current price
I suppose its really how you define rare. Is 200 copies rare or relatively common ? I'd say that in comparison to many rare records its quite common. I agree the so called rarities that crop up every few weeks on RCA, Scepter etc are not rare. I've made this point on here before and upset a few. The fact that most copies are in the hands of collectors does not mean its rare - just unavailable. Yes there is significant interest in such items, but again is it not confusing demand and rarity ? There is also another factor and that is the 'cheque book Charlie's' who must have every record immediately at whatever cost, irrespective of the history and background of the 45. On the flip side there are those who are prepared to take advantage of this situation. Call it naivety, or lack of knowledge - I'll leave that up to others to decide, but if I was buying a record and it was a front page focus for many dealers readily available at £5 some years ago, I'd really ask myself why I would pay £900 for it now.
-
Sherrell bros current price
This 45 was a 'front page focus' 45 for Black knight records at £5. I bought one and sold it several years ago for about £25. Not a rare record as many other dealers had copies also. Always regarded it as a cheapie. Its a nice enough record and in demand.... but £900 ?
