Was a regular at the KGB and still have my membership card. We’d see Nev at a midweek do at Inky Social Club Chesterfield and he would come and pick us up at Sheffield train station on Saturday evening. We used to do the warm up before the nighter and grab some chips and nick a bottle of milk from the diary nearby waiting to get back in to the nighter. The trains from chesterfield early evening were always pretty full and most made the long walk to the venue. Nev taxis were great for us especially if it was bad weather. Good times and happy memories. Andy

Hi All For sale today a Mecca tune long forgotten but now on the rise again. Side A is a banging uptempo modern crossover piece typical of the Mecca tune which is now reactivated. The flip side is a more mellow mid tempo cut, which again appeals to many in and around the lowrider genre and in demand itself. Last sold on Discogs in May at £125, where the lower grades have still fetched £60 or so in recent times. Timmy Thomas - Whats bothering me / Dizzy Dizzy World - Climax Ex £70 YT clips for ref: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuMZT-3i8Qk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t-G9d1og50 Post and Pack £2.5 first, £4.50 Signed, £6. worldwide std air. Paypal as F&F or add 4% Any questions or to order, please PM me. Thanks Andy

Sending records back to the USA
Billy Jo Jim Bob replied to Paraboliccurve's topic in Look At Your Box
I've sent many records to the US with no real issue. What you put on the customs form really depends on the buyer, whether he wants insurance etc, what the declared value is an so on. I've sent as Gift and nominal $5 value with no issue. One thing I would say is the postal service varies significantly from city to city and state to state. USPS have a good tracking system on line once its in the US. -

BBC Radio Four Woman's Hour: Northern Soul feature
Billy Jo Jim Bob replied to Kesalocasoul's topic in All About the SOUL
BBC 'Woman's Hour' has previous form I think. I recall some years ago there was a female NS DJ (cant remember her name) that was asked to go on the show to tell the women how hard it was to be a female in a mans world. When the producer spoke to her sometime before the planned show, she said that all of the male DJ's were very helpful and she had experienced no sexism at all. The show then said the segment was being dropped. Surprised...not. Somebody will know more detail than me but that was the gist of it as I recall. -
Hi Happy new year to all. A few STORE STOCK 45's which are all unplayed (with a bit of an obscure one thrown in) for today. They wont break the bank and there will be NO $20 post or 20% VAT !! Post is 2.50 first and 4.50 recorded, worldwide air will be around 5.00. Anything special wanted I can check with the postie. Grades used NM (I don't use mint and these will be unplayed), Ex and VG with +/- to refine. YT clips are for reference only. PM to ask questions or order. Thanks Andy ++++++++++++++++ 1. A bit of an obscure one to start which I think was a JM auction item sometime back and one dealer has listed at £300, so grab yourself a bargain. The Barons - A teardrop fell for me - LaMar Ex- £75 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxIbpC9HrtM 2. With the Sunday sessions growing and looking for chilled groove, this sounds so good played out. The Esquires - Stay - New World NM £20 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnKCOzSL-DA 3. A Chicago classic that gives you an excellent Northern tune combined with a lovely low rider - take your pick on what floats your boat. The COD's - I'm a good guy / Pretty Baby - NM - Kellmac £15 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nzp7mL874U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hVKp0DdZ6g 4. The Innovations - just keep on loving me - Hit Sound NM £20 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYqxTgrl-mY 5. Another that has grown in recent times, the unreleased promo alternative version which is a different mix to the issued copy The Impressions - Love me - Curtom NM £30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX0mfT_FL3c 6. William Devaughn - Be thankful for what you got - Tec NM £20 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl13cJyG0Ec 7. Another classic from William that needs no intro. Dance floor magic. William Devaughn - Hold on to love - Tec NM £10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdniut7hXZI

I’m not sure you can categorically call it a bootleg. Many recording contracts in the sixties and seventies did not require an artists permission to issue a track, along with other terms that may raise eyebrows and were not favourable to the artist. It happened on both indie and major labels. No skin in the game for me as I don’t own it.

An excellent and honest appraisal from Tim @Colouredman. What I take from this and the subsequent comments is that it was really ‘of its time’ which is my own feeling on it. Nighters were still the place to go and the dancers were looking for something frantic and pounding to dance to, and this fits the bill. There are many other Northern tunes in a similar vein as has been said. Does it fit in to todays scene, I’m not sure ? But as I said previously it’s about personal taste. Andy

Its the best thing since sliced bread, or its a triumph of rarity over quality. I think what we've learned from this thread, its about personnel taste - as we all know.

Hi I just bought a Technics SU-VX500 (with mono setting) to replace the old NAD 3120. Connections from the amp to the speakers were via banana plugs into the amp sockets on the back of the NAD. It seems the Technics amp will not take the banana plug connections. I saw a glimpse of an old Technics manual on line (a bit unreadable) and it said just to use speaker wire as I read it. Is this correct does anyone know ? Alternatively is there a different connection the amp will take (and also speakers) ? Bit of a novice at all this stuff. Attached a photo of the back of the amp for reference. Thanks for any assistance Andy

Hi For sale today a classic Cleethorpes tune that has remained rare since the early days. There was a version done on the Bionic label but it is nowhere near the original in quality or rarity. The last JM guide I had said around £400 for this tune. Been in the storage box for 20+ years. Grades used M, Ex, VG and +/- to fine tune. Grading is usually on the conservative side. Charles Russell - it ain't easy - Psyche VG+ £175 Play grade Ex to Ex+. Hairlines on the styrene, but no deep scratches, gouges or skips. Label has a birthday dedication written around the side of the label (see scan) but clean otherwise. Payment as Paypal F&F or add 4% to the total if you wish to use this route. Post would be £2.50 first, £4.00 recorded. Please PM to ask questions or order. Thanks Andy

For me: Frankie Beverley - wanted Tamala Lewis - won’t say nothing As a kid in the 70’s I’d hear these and dash for the dance floor. My tastes may have changed but these intros still make the hairs stand on end. Andy

If you read thru this thread you will pick up some info some way down. In short Hal Davis worked for Motown out in LA long before Motown relocated to LA in 74. Probably where the connection is to Jobete songs on an LA label. Most of the artists / producers etc like the Pipkin bros were LA based. Not all songs were Jobete tho'. Andy

Thanks Ken.

Hi I have a NAD 3120 Amp which I bought as it has the Mono setting for playing those 45’s recorded in mono. Can anyone recommend an amp similar and with bass adjustment ? I did see some mention an amp but can’t find any trace on here when I search. not looking to donate a testicle to buy one, so anything reasonably priced would be appreciated. Thanks Andy

Tapes are a “thing” again. Bumped into a guy at a local record fair from London and all he wanted was tapes. The local record shop owner gets the same two visitors come from Japan to buy tapes every year. Apparently the old Walkman is a thing with the Yoof also. Who knew ?
